SUMMARY:Claire Rousay + Laila Sakini
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nCLAIRE ROUSAYLAILA SAKINITuesday 11 AprilGrand Junction\, Rowington Cl\, London W2 5TF7.30pm | £16 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/g3773706d1eb \n\n\n\nCLAIRE ROUSAY’s music zeroes in on personal emotions and the minutiae of everyday life — voicemails\, haptics\, environmental recordings\, stopwatches\, whispers and conversations — exploding their significance. Based in San Antonio\, Texas\, Claire’s acute assemblages of sound are both a diaristic portal into the life of their creator\, and an exercise in dressing and undressing the bare audio field using compositional threads that feel loosely entangled\, yet fastidiously woven. A prolific run of recordings since 2020\, culminating in this year’s ‘everything perfect is already here’ (Shelter Press)\, has seen Claire come closer than most modern sound-makers to aesthetically nailing the temperament of a world turned inward. \n\n\n\nNow\, as music leaves the house once more\, Claire’s live show – in both solo mode and trio formation with close collaborators Mari ‘More Eaze’ Maurice and Theodore Cale Schafer – brings a singular reflexivity\, unflinching honesty and adroit humour to the performance space\, with an ever-burgeoning audience accepting the invite into her soundworld.https://clairerousay.com/ \n\n\n\nLAILA SAKINI works with piano\, voice\, guitar\, found sound\, electronics and silence to create dynamic and textured environments that provide the listener with space to develop their own meanings and responses. Her major works include Like A Gun (EP)\, Vivienne (LP)\, Strada (EP)\, Into The Traffic\, Under The Moonlight (LP)\, Princess Diana of Wales (LP) and her 2017 collaboration with poet Lucy Van\, Figures (EP). Laila has performed at Cafe Oto\, Galeria Zé dos Bois\, Berlin Atonal\, Listen! festival\, The White Hotel\, Meakusma x Arkaoda\, Kings Place\, Wunkderkammer Festival\, Ponto d’Orvalho among others.https://lailasakini.bandcamp.com/

SUMMARY:The Haunted Landscape: Folklore\, Monsters and Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:The Haunted Landscape calls again with demons in the landscape\, kings sleeping beneath the ground and the ghosts that have followed us through all of human history. Join the London Fortean Society at Conway Hall (or on the live stream) for a day of talks and short films on the folklore of Britain and beyond. \nIrving Finkel – The First GhostsIrving Finkel takes us back to the very beginning. A world-renowned authority on cuneiform\, the form creative commons of writing on clay tablets that date back to 3400BC\, Finkel has embarked upon an ancient ghost hunt\, scouring these tablets to unlock the secrets of the Sumerians\, Babylonians\, and Assyrians to breathe new life into the first ghost stories ever written. In his book The First Ghosts\, he uncovers an extraordinarily rich seam of ancient spiritual wisdom which has remained hidden for nearly 4000 years\, covering practical details of how to live with ghosts\, how to get rid of them and bring them back\, and how to avoid becoming one\, as well as exploring more philosophical questions: what are ghosts\, why does the idea of them remain so powerful despite the lack of concrete evidence\, and what do they tell us about being human?Dr Irving Finkel is Assistant Keeper of Ancient Mesopotamian (i.e. Sumerian\, Babylonian\, and Assyrian) script\, languages\, and cultures Department: the Middle East at the British Museum\, headquartered in London’s Bloomsbury. He is the curator in charge of cuneiform inscriptions on tablets of clay from ancient Mesopotamia\, of which the Middle East Department has the largest collection – some 130\,000 pieces – of any modern museum. This work involves reading and translating all sorts of inscriptions\, sometimes working on ancient archives to identify manuscripts that belong together or join one another. \nBrice Stratford – The New Forest: A Pocket of PixiesBrice Stratford discusses the specific pixie traditions of the New Forest\, which survive strongly today in genuine\, lived belief as a real exception to the rest of the country. Most are familiar with the folkloric survival of the Cornish and Devonian pixie traditions and are aware that pixie belief once extended from there across the entire south coast\, but the survival of it in the New Forest as a distinct pocket has not been commented on\, and the character of the pixies there has evolved in a different direction to that of Cornwall and Devon\, wilder and more reflective of the New Forest “Commoning” practices and culture\, in whose community the stories have survived\,Brice is an English director\, writer\, historian\, folklorist\, actor-manager\, and heritage campaigner. He is the author of Anglo-Saxon Myths: The Struggle for the Seven Kingdoms and New Forest Myths and Folklore. \nLisa Schneidau – Monsters from the Deep: River Folk Tales of Britain and IrelandWeed-strewn crones\, just waiting to pull you into the river. Swans with serious grudges and eels with drinking problems. Hideous creatures never see the light of day… until you fish them out of the river. Lisa Schneidau tells tall tales from the dark side of our freshwater folklore.Lisa Schneidau is a storyteller and environmentalist based in Dartmoor. She seeks out and shares traditional stories about the land and our complex relationship with it. Lisa is the author of River Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland\, Woodland Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland\, and Botanical Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland (all History Press). She tells stories at events\, nature reserves\, art centres\, and schools\, including performance storytelling\, training\, and storytelling development within education\, as well as helping to run South Devon Storytellers and Dartmoor Storytellers. Lisa trained as an ecologist and has worked in British nature conservation for twenty-five years. \nJeremy Harte – John Wesley and the Devil: Hell-Wrestling with the Magic MethodistsThe black flapping thing at the end of the lane was no trivial superstition but the Devil in person. Had not John Wesley himself grown up fearing the Lord through living in a haunted house? Many giants\, great and tall\, went stalking through the land\, his followers sang; if the thunder of the ogre’s voice usually reduced itself into the catcalling of an unregenerate mob\, that only confirmed its diabolical nature.Satan was a physical presence who clutched and dragged; supernatural visitants gave not just adviceand solace but enough light to illuminate a cottage room; spiritual progress was noisy and physical\, trembling\, crying\, struggling. Men of the people\, the popular preachers\, dreamed of what was to come and were guided by special providences\, shadows of the fortune-telling tracts that they had condemned. Through grace\, they cast out fiends\, dispelled ghosts\, and crushed the horrid powers of witches. Everything claimed for magic by the unworthy was done for the saints by zeal.Jeremy Harte is the curator of the Bourne Hall Museum at Epsom and Ewell. He is secretary of the Romany and Traveller Family History Society and created the Surrey Gypsy Archive. He is the author of Cloven Country: The Devil and the English Landscape (Reaktion\, 2022). \nJasper Goodall – Into The Wild NightJasper Goodall describes his work as portraying the haunted nightscape. Inspired by\, among many things\, the historical Swedish folk tradition of Årsgång\, translated as ‘the omen walk’. It is traditionally performed on new year’s eve or the winter solstice. At midnight one must walk alone and in the dark through woods to a specific location\, often the village church. Inside the woods\, one was said to encounter entities or manifestations that acted as omens for the coming year. His photographs capture stillness\, solitude\, and the sense of a hushed\, waiting presence that is perhaps more palpably felt in the hours of darkness.Goodall’s nocturnal photographs have been described as at once beautiful and terrifying. The images reference the idea that a kind of thrilling delight can be gleaned from viewing something eerie or disconcerting — imagining yourself in the dark places he visits. He teaches creativity and visual communication. He is a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton\, teaching generations of visual communicators for almost 20 years. \nDr Victoria Flood – Alderley Edge and the Dead ManAlderley Edge in North-east Cheshire (UK) is a red stand-stone escarpment above a subterranean network of mines\, associated with a long-lived legend of sleeping heroes who will awaken at a time of national crisis. A non-built heritage site now managed by the National Trust\, the Edge is intensely meaningful to a relatively small group of local stakeholders alongside a worldwide audience of readers engaged with the works of the novelist Alan Garner. Garner is perhaps best known for his Weirdstone trilogy\, set in (and underneath the surface of) Alderley Edge\, and his 2022 Booker prize-longlisted novella Treacle Walker\, which is similarly engaged with the haunted and mythologically resonant landscape of the wider region.Based on research undertaken as part of the Arts and Humanities Research-funded Invisible Worlds project\, this paper traces engagement with medieval prophecy at the Edge from the eighteenth century to the present\, exploring the emotional resonance of its multifaceted medievalisms. It takes as it centers the contested uses of the figure of the (un)dead man\, the waking sleeper beneath the Edge. \nRoy Vickery – Eerie Planet FolklorePlants have had symbolic and practical meanings and use since the beginning of human civilization. This talk on the rich variety of British and Irish folklore draws on Roy Vickery‘s unsurpassed archives collated over forty years and a wide range of historical and contemporary literature. Based on new material collected by Roy and showing that we still cling to the symbolic importance of plants. Putting conkers in wardrobes keeps moths away\, and parsley – the Devil’s plant – only germinates if sown on Good Friday.Roy worked as a botanist at the Natural History Museum\, London\, for over 30 years as the museum’s curator of vascular plants. He has published five books on plant folklore and is a former Honorary Secretary of the Folklore Society. He is president of the South London Botanical Institute. \nDaniel & Clara – Avebury Imaginary: a personal history of a stone circle & hillArtists Daniel & Clara take us on a personal journey to Avebury stone circle and Silbury Hill\, reflecting on a body of work in response to these ancient sites. \nAvebury is not just a place; it is a dream built into the landscape. \nSince meeting in 2010\, Daniel & Clara have dedicated themselves to a shared life of creative exploration\, working across moving images\, photography\, performance\, installation\, and correspondence art. Using themselves and their life together as their material\, their work explores the nature of human experience\, perception\, and reality. Set against the backdrop of the British landscape\, their work presents narratives of psychological disorientation and the human creature in crisis. SUMMARY:London’s Horror History & Offbeat British Cult Films
DESCRIPTION:Join the London Fortean Society with three writers on London and British horror as we look at the city’s dark cinematic street and how film transformed familiar British landscapes into spaces of terror. \nThe evening will show trailers for many of the films featured. \nLauren Jane Barnett – Death Lines: London’s Horror Film History \nLauren Jane Barnett unearths the literature\, legends\, and history behind horror classics including Peeping Tom and An American Werewolf in London\, and lesser-known works such as mind-control melodrama The Sorcerers; Gorgo\, Britain’s answer to Godzilla; tube terror Death Line; and Bela Lugosi’s mesmeric vehicle The Dark Eyes of London.\nTinged with humor\, social critique\, and more than a few scares\, her book Death Lines delights in revealing the hidden and often surprising relationship between London and the dark cinematic visions it has evoked.\nWhether read on the streets or from the comfort of the grave\, Death Lines is a treat for all cinephiles\, horror fans\, and lovers of London lore.\nIn the tradition of writing what you know\, Lauren Jane Barnett – in the life she’s lived\, the books she’s loved\, and the films she’s devoured – knows horror. \nDarrell Buxton and Jennifer Wallis – Offbeat: British Cinema’s Curiosities\, Obscurities and Forgotten Gems\nOffbeat contributors Darrell Buxton and Jennifer Wallis will be discussing some of Britain’s lesser-known cult films and their often-horrific depictions of mental healthcare and family relationships. From Twisted Nerve to Killer’s Moon\, and from Amicus’s Asylum to Pete Walker’s Frightmare\, we’ll see how British film between the 1960s and 1980s tackled some of the country’s thorniest issues\, in the process transforming familiar British landscapes into spaces of terror. \nOffbeat: British Cinema’s Curiosities\, Obscurities and Forgotten Gems (Revised and Updated) explores Britain’s obscurities\, curiosities and forgotten cinematic gems.

SUMMARY:Performance | ℧R by Fronte Vacuo
DESCRIPTION:arebyte presents ℧R\, a solo performance developed and produced by the Performance-Theatre group Fronte Vacuo (Marco Donnarumma\, Margherita Pevere and Andrea Familari)\, as a new rhizome of their project Humane Methods. \n℧R reflects on violence as a foundation of current algorithmic societies: the violence of instructions\, systems\, and infrastructures created to abuse all living beings. Such systems work through loops and organised repetitions. Humans make instructions; machines repeat instructions\, and living things suffer instructions\, on and on and on. The piece takes the loop as a starting point to combine multi-sensorial stimulation with human-computer interaction and somatic practices to test the seeming impossibilities of bodily articulation and repetition. Embodied in Marco Donnarumma’s musical instrument XTH Sense\, an interactive\, machine learning algorithm transforms the inner sound of muscles\, blood\, and bones into a real-time choreography of movement\, sounds and light. \nThe evening ends with an artist talk unfolding the ideas\, research and artistic methodology behind the Humane Methods saga (2019-ad Infinitum). \nScience Fiction Squared precedes the performance\, a one-day symposium inviting established and emerging science fiction writers and critics to discuss how social and technological trends are likely to change the form and function of science fiction. What new challenges and eternal questions will tomorrow’s SF address? Will it advocate for a better world or warn against a worse one? Who will create it\, and why? \nThe performance contains nudity and strobe lighting that may potentially trigger seizures for people with photosensitive epilepsy. SUMMARY:Deerhoof + Sacred Paws
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \n\n\n\nDEERHOOFSACRED PAWSWednesday 31 AugustElectric Ballroom\, 184 Camden High St\, Camden\, London\, NW1 8QP\, UK7pm | £17 | Tickets:  https://link.dice.fm/pc5188b40f90 \n\n\n\nDEERHOOF have continually quested for daring storytelling and radical sounds over their eighteen boundless albums\, as experimental as they are pop. 2020’s critically acclaimed\, overwhelmingly prescient Future Teenage Cave Artists explored fairytale visions of post-apocalypse\, welding intrinsic melodies with absurdist digital recording methods. Its immediate sequel Love-Lore\, a live covers medley\, channeled futurist mid-century artists—Parliament\, Sun Ra and Stockhausen\, to name a handful— into a patchwork love letter to the anti-authoritarian expressions that inspire the band. \n\n\n\nDeerhoof’s latest\, Actually\, You Can\, is a genre-abundant record that uses technicolor vibrancy and arpeggiated muscularity to offer a vital shock from capitalism’s purgatorial hold. The band says\, “Think of all the beauty\, positivity and love that gets deemed ugly\, negative and hateful by the self-proclaimed guardians of ‘common sense.’ We’d hardly be destroying society by dismantling their colonial economics and prisons and gender roles and aesthetics. We’d be creating it!” \n\n\n\n\nhttps://deerhoof.bandcamp.com/\n\n\n\n\nSACRED PAWS are a fantastic\, intuitive dream punk duo\, comprising Eilidh Rodgers of Golden Grrls on drums\, and Rachel Aggs from Trash Kit and Shopping on guitar. Raw Soweto high-life riffs and rolling Afrobeat grooves are filtered through post-punk sass and ramshackle K Records charm. It’s an utterly joyous sound\, the duo trading giddy melodies and righteous chants over febrile rhythms and chunky\, infectious riffage. Rock Action released the band’s debut album ‘Strike A Match’ in 2017 and it received a slew of incredible reviews from the likes of Q\, DIY\, Clash\, Loud & Quiet\, The Skinny and was voted Scottish Album of the Year too! In 2019 they followed that up with ‘Run Around The Sun’ (out May 31st on Merge / Rock Action) brimming with upbeat reflections on growing up and looking back. \n\n\n\nJump Into Life

SUMMARY:Ukrainian Debate Series: Information War in Russia
DESCRIPTION:A panel discussion Deborah Haynes\, Sky News; Jade McGlynn\, Middlebury Institute; Václav Štětka\, Loughborough University \n\n\n\nAs millions of people in the democratic world condemn the Russian military aggression toward Ukraine\, which has now evolved into a prolonged war conflict with a detrimental impact on hundreds of thousands of human lives and severe damage to the Ukrainian economy\, the aggressor seems to maintain strong support for its “special military operation” inside Russia. Shall the Russian state-controlled media apparatus receive the credit for the Russian public’s overwhelming endorsement of President Putin? How do the Russians perceive the spread of misinformation\, manipulation of public opinion and a total crackdown on the media? Should the Russian state-controlled television RT be banned from Western media space or shall the public have free choice? Is there a case to transpose the military conflict in Ukraine to an Information War in Russia?

SUMMARY:Health Optimisation Summit 2022
DESCRIPTION:OUR MISSION BEGINS WITH OPTIMISED HEALTH CARE\n\n\n\n\n\nThe health industry has become a sickness industry. More people are chronically ill and on medications than in the history of mankind. There’s as much misinformation as there are pills for every ill\, and new health ‘celebrities’\, treatments\, conferences\, and diets have been appearing like never before. While there are some stunning successes\, generally\, they can be very focal\, disjointed\, and not tackle the issue from a high enough level. It’s time to centralise\, join forces\, and break down barriers with The Health Optimisation Summit.  \n \nThis isn’t just a UK first. It’s a world first. We’re curating the best from all the key diets and everything in the health\, wellbeing\, medical\, nutrition\, biohacking and fitness worlds\, with the view not to push one mindset but to incorporate them all with the sole goal of making people healthier – using whichever mindset or ‘diet’ is best for the individual. \nOur first summit in 2019 proved how powerful connecting the smartest minds in each of these worlds is – and how many people can live healthier happier lives. This is our shared goal. Not sickness care\, but optimised health using all the best knowledge\, data and people in this space\, globally.

The session aims to inspire more people in the region to join a unique profession that helps shape the next generation’s lives. \nAnyone interested in finding out more about the benefits and rewards of Teaching can visit the Train to Teach event at Congress Centre\, 28 Great Russell Street\, London\, WC1B 3LS on Saturday 5th March 2022 from 10 am to 2:30 pm. \nVisitors will learn how to get into Teaching from expert advisers\, training providers and local teachers. \nThe event is part of a programme of events organised across different towns and cities by the national Get Into Teaching campaign\, which provides a comprehensive programme of support to help graduates become teachers. \nAbout 10\,000 people attend a series of Train to Teach events every year. At the latest event\, attendees will be able to chat with current teachers to find out what a day in the life of a teacher is really like\, and get one-to-one advice from teaching experts on their application. Information will also be available about how to fund your training – you could get a tax-free bursary of up to £24\,000 to train as a teacher in selected subjects. \nReflecting on her career to date\, Anastasia Lada\, a maths teacher at Tolworth Girls School and Sixth Form in Surbiton\, who will be sharing their experience and insights at the event\, said: \n“I’m proud to be supporting the campaign\, and I would encourage anyone who is just starting in the world of work or looking to switch jobs to consider a career in Teaching.\n“Teaching is such a varied role\, from the emotional rewards of making students feel like anything is possible to use your experience to bring lessons to life – no two days are the same. The best part of it for me is to see it in students’ eyes when they understand something and can apply a new concept to new questions. \n“I know the impact good teachers can have on a child\, not just in terms of academic success but in teaching a child the importance of social skills\, promoting resilience\, self-worth and confidence.” \nBeing a teacher means impacting students well beyond the classroom years. In recent research of over 2\,000 people for getting into Teaching\, two fifths* (40%) of adults surveyed in England work in a job or career related to one of their favourite subjects from their time at school. Furthermore\, almost three quarters** (74%) of those surveyed who have a favourite subject said their teachers’ passion for the subject helped spark their interest in it1. \nRoger Pope\, the spokesperson for the Get Into Teaching campaign and a National Leader of Education\, said: \n“It’s a beautiful feeling knowing that every lesson is helping to shape the life of a young person. \n“As well as the immense satisfaction of witnessing students learn and knowing you are influencing who or what they might become\, Teaching enables you to tap into your talents and passion for a particular subject. \n“It also offers some competitive financial rewards and long-term prospects. \n“Anyone who feels they have the passion and potential to teach should join us for this Train to Teach event in London.” \nThe free Train to Teach event is held at Congress Centre\, 28 Great Russell Street\, London\, WC1B 3LS\, on Saturday 5th March 2022 from 10 am to 2:30 pm. Registration in advance is advisable\, but visitors can turn up and register on the day. \nAs a teacher\, you can help create a society where everyone\, wherever they live\, regardless of gender\, race\, ethnicity\, education or age\, has the opportunity to succeed. The Get Into Teaching service has experienced advisers available to give free support and advice.
