SUMMARY:Smile Train Invites Friends and Families to Host a Big Smile Tea Party
DESCRIPTION:The international children’s cleft charity Smile Train is excited to announce that their annual fundraising event\, the Big Smile Tea Party\, will return for 2021 – just in time for the Easter festivities. \nLaunching from Thursday 1 April – Friday 16 April\, the Big Smile Tea Party encourages friends\, families\, colleagues\, and students all over the UK to come together and host an internationally themed tea party whilst raising vital funds for children with clefts in need of treatment. \nWhether you choose to ‘par-tea’ at home\, schedule a tea break with colleagues over Zoom\, or FaceTime relatives from afar for an afternoon tea\, Smile Train is encouraging everybody to boil the kettle\, enjoy a slice of their favourite cake\, and have a ‘good old natter’ with the people they love whilst donating some spare change to Smile Train if they can. \nMany children around the world with clefts do not have access to proper treatment\, which can permanently impact their ability to eat\, breathe\, speak\, and ultimately thrive. To tackle this issue\, Smile Train empowers local medical professionals in 70+ countries with the training\, funding\, and resources they need to provide free cleft surgery and other forms of essential care to children in their own communities. \n \n  \n  \nAll funds raised through the Big Smile Tea Party will allow the charity to continue this lifesaving work and give more children the opportunity to live healthy and productive lives. \nThere is no time like the present to show off your lockdown baking skills\, so tie up your aprons\, dig out your best recipe books\, and whip up some treats using your favourite international ingredients to help change the world one smile at a time. \nComplimentary fundraising kits are available to order at smiletrain.org.uk/bigsmileteaparty for anyone who is eager to take part. The kits contain all the essentials you need for a successful tea party\, including Smile Train posters\, balloons\, stickers\, and a collection box. \nIan Vallance\, Director of Smile Train UK\, says: “The Big Smile Tea Party is a perfect opportunity for people to spend some quality time with their loved ones over Easter\, whether that’s in person or virtually\, whilst raising money for children in need around the world. \nTo date\, Smile Train has transformed the lives of more than 1.5 million children with the power of a brand-new forever smile. The funds we receive from the Big Smile Tea Party will enable us to continue our vital work and create even more smiles in the years to come.” \nThe Big Smile Tea Party campaign will be running from Thursday 1 April to Friday 16 April\, but you can hold one at any time. SUMMARY:Eclipse of the Scrolls with Gerald Chukwuma
DESCRIPTION:Through a frenzy of colours and symbols that are chiselled\, burnt and painted onto panels of wood\, Nigerian artist Gerald Chukwuma creates striking visual language that weaves together ancient symbols\, contemporary and historic references. These are the artists ‘scrolls’ that document the untold stories of Igbo culture and modern Nigeria in resistance to one-sided media narratives that are wilfully manipulated by authority figures. Chukuma’s latest exhibition Eclipse of the Scrolls at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery’s London Bridge space questions the extent to which we are controlled by the information that we are or aren’t consuming. At a turbulent time in not only Nigerian history but also internationally\, the artist’s dynamic sculptural surfaces underline the vital importance of free\, creative expression as a form of resistance to everyday indoctrination. \nThis latest body of work brings together a number of Chukwuma’s concerns in relation to how media shapes our knowledge of not only history\, but the present moment. Whilst the manipulation of media by dominating powers is not a new issue\, recent national and global crises have provided fresh opportunities to direct public opinion. ‘If you watch the news in Nigeria\, you only see footage of people dying of coronavirus in America or the UK\, but why are Nigerians not dying? Can we say that we have immunity or the cure?’ says the artist. ‘It’s not about cutting off information\, it’s about masking the truth.’ In a sub-series of smaller-scale works entitled Untold Stories\, Chukwuma reimagines the covers of tabloid newspapers with symbols and headlines stitched onto the background whilst haunting black figures hang down from the centre\, their facial features assembled from mechanical cogs\, wheels and padlocks. This collage style is characteristic of the artist’s work\, but the hybrid figures – half-man\, half-machine – are especially powerful here as a reflection on how the information we are fed or denied impacts our cultural identities and wider sense of self. \nFor many years\, Chukwuma’s practice has been deeply informed and inspired by the Uli art traditions of the Igbo people from southeastern Nigeria. However\, through his research\, the artist has discovered that Igbo culture has not been sufficiently documented\, and as such\, knowledge of their heritage is at risk of disappearing from contemporary consciousness. ‘A lack of data is a big problem in Africa\,’ he says. ‘I am creating works that I hope can become a form of documentation.’ The Uli patterns and symbols were traditionally painted directly onto the skin or as murals on the walls of a house\, which faded in the sunshine or washed away with the rain\, but in Chukwuma’s artworks they are made permanent through various artistic processes and embedded within a multitude of references. \nThe artist incorporates materials that are sourced locally in Lagos and are typically regarded as everyday detritus\, such as bottle corks and recycled soft drinks and beer cans. These are flattered and nailed onto the wooden panels\, adding a new tactile dimension and contributing to the distinct colour palette as well as relating to contemporary discourse around waste and the environment. His aesthetic and colour palette\, however\, are influenced by his encounters with and studies of international art history such as Gustav Klimt’s gold detailing\, Van Gogh’s complex use of colour and Picasso’s stylistic diversity. All of these experiences and observations manifest artistically as highly-textured surfaces and complex visual narratives that not only transcend time and geographical boundaries\, but also materiality. \nThe incorporation of multiple voices and narratives is essential to Chukwuma’s artistic intentions\, and also serves as a form of resistance to what he calls ‘the colonial implications of text’ and the prescribed role of the artist in Africa. ‘African societies thrived on oral traditions handed down from generation to generation\, and these traditions\, often sacrosanct as they were\, could not withstand the cultural disruptions that were to be her colonial experience\,’ he explains. ‘There are social implications to this impasse; one is the habitual place of the African creative in the global scheme of things. There is an unwritten place to which he seems to have been confined\, and hardly permitted to operate beyond its stations. Often this social stratification is non-constitutional and does not have the backing of legal tenets in the actual sense\, but rather works as a psychological cul-de-sac\, a route with a finite and close ended destination\, never to be surmounted.’ \nIn an attempt to break free from such constraints\, Chukuma embraces his ‘primordial instinct’ by working directly onto the wooden panels without making any preliminary sketches. ‘When it comes to my work\, I tend to be open minded and very fluid\,’ he says. ‘Perhaps my affinity with the Uli symbolism is with its fluidity and tactical use of space.’ This creative urgency and dynamism is perhaps most strongly felt in the heavily etched surface of the artwork entitled EFURU’S COMB. On a first glance\, the writhing tangle of lines and colours is almost overwhelming\, but gradually\, the symbolism and imagery begins to reveal itself\, offering a multitude of narrative possibilities that actively invite creative engagement and cultural exchange. \nMelding together a bold mix of colours\, artistic techniques\, historic references\, narratives and imagery\, each artwork possesses an astounding sense of vitality and depth that celebrates creative expression and experimentation whilst also drawing our attention to how storytelling has been\, and still is used as a tool of indoctrination. In this way\, Eclipse of the Scrolls reminds us of how essential art is in challenging the status quo by making the untold stories of individuals\, communities and nations visible to global audiences.

SUMMARY:Theory in Crisis Seminar - Sara Salem\, Anticolonial Contradictions
DESCRIPTION:What is the role of critical theory today and who is it for? What kind of maps can theory provide in the context of entrenched capitalist crisis? These are some of the questions posed by this seminar series. \nIn the aftermath of various mutations of twentieth-century ‘critical theory’ (Frankfurt School\, ‘French Theory’\, etc.)\, proponents of ‘postcritique’ have argued that critical theory has ‘run out of steam’. Instead\, this seminar series starts from the premise that 21st-century crisis has also generated dynamic new ways of reconsidering these questions. A critical theory of the present is necessarily a crisis theory. \nIn this session\, Sara Salem will give a talk titled ‘Anticolonial Contradictions: Temporality\, Capital and Theory in 1950s Egypt.’ \nThis talk explores the powerful project created in the aftermath of Egypt’s decolonisation in the 1950s and 1960s through an imagined conversation between Antonio Gramsci and Frantz Fanon\, two foundational theorists of anti-capitalism and anticolonialism. Questions of decolonisation\, capitalism\, temporality\, and mastery are explored in order to excavate anticolonial politics in all of its complexity. The talk asks what the contradictions present within these projects can tell us about social theory more broadly\, as well as how we narrate\, theorise\, and remember histories of anticolonial struggle. \nSpeaker\nSara Salem is an Assistant Professor in Sociology at the London School of Economics. Her research interests include political sociology\, postcolonial studies\, Marxist theory\, and global histories of anticolonialism. Her recently published book with Cambridge University Press is titled Anticolonial Afterlives in Egypt: The Politics of Hegemony.

SUMMARY:Terra Nexus
DESCRIPTION:Terra Nexus is an immersive experience featuring 25 artists produced by Proposition Studios. First opening at our former site in Peckham in October 2020\, the exhibition has now been reconstructed\, expanded and developed with 3 new installations and a new navigation around a multi-sensory labyrinthine of interconnected artist worlds. Sitting in the heart of 150 artist studios overlooking the Thames\, Terra Nexus presents interwoven immersive environments which reflect on the human relationship with the biosphere set against the backdrop of an ancient metropolis that is reawakening into a new post lockdown reality. \nSpringing from the foundational idea that we need to shift away from a narrative of human dominion and independence in order to protect the biosphere\, Terra Nexus installations explore the necessity of living soil; the perpetual migration of species; the cascading threat of impending extinctions; ways to reconnect with nature; conflict arising from depleted resources; the future of cities and how humans will live within them. From the perspectives of insects and animals\, through the eyes of scientists\, artificial intelligence\, plant life\, ancient cultures and conflicting contemporary viewpoints; Terra Nexus is a wormhole of ideas. \nWarping sensory experiences\, excavating\, weaving between co-existing timelines and suggesting alternative histories; this is the first of a series of immersive projects by Proposition Studios asking the viewer to raise their own questions about THE HUMAN AS PART OF ECOLOGY and what that means today and for future generations. \nIn preparation for this project\, the exhibiting artists took part in an intensive research residency\, visiting sites where human intervention has dramatically increased biodiversity while providing for human needs. Inspired by these projects of experts working to regenerate the biosphere and address global food problems; installations directly reference cutting edge science\, biodiverse agriculture and environmental activism.

SUMMARY:DROWNTOWN
DESCRIPTION:Barbican online world premiere and digital tour for gritty dance-theatre show \nDouble National Dance Awards nominee Rhiannon Faith’s new show DROWNTOWN holds a mirror to a society at tipping point and is now remodelled for online presentation \nIn choreographer Rhiannon Faith’s new show DROWNTOWN\, six strangers\, weighed down by individual darkness\, come to a deprived coastal land. Seemingly abandoned\, there is no one to help but themselves. Stuck between the remains of a broken community and the vast bleakness of the sea\, they struggle with isolation\, shame and failed support systems. \nDROWNTOWN’s live world premiere was set for June 2020 at London’s Barbican. In reaction to the pandemic Faith has teamed up with award-winning Big Egg Films to create a stunning multi camera film version of the show. \nBold and brave\, the show uses autobiographical testimonials and text to give voice to the vulnerable and unheard in Britain’s areas of social deprivation. With tenderness and honesty\, the show holds up a mirror to a society at tipping point. DROWNTOWN arrives to help save our world from drowning. \nRhiannon Faith explained ‘DROWNTOWN was made with a hope to heal a broken world. With the profound loneliness and isolation many have experienced during the lockdowns I really didn’t want to delay the opportunity for people to see it. As communities start to put their lives back together\, this show is asking that everyone is included in the process\, and there is authentic belonging for all.’ \nThe World Premiere will be hosted by London’s Barbican on 1 June 2021 at 7pm. Watch via the Barbican website at https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2021/event/rhiannon-faith-company-drowntown-film\nJoin the creator/Director and cast on Facebook at 8:45 for a live Q&A after the show. \nThe Barbican will then host the film to watch on demand until 6 June. DROWNTOWN will then tour digitally through June with runs hosted by Cambridge Junction\, Gulbenkian Canterbury\, Ipswich Dance East and Harlow Playhouse. See a trailer here. \nIn the 2021 National Dance Awards Rhiannon Faith Company has been nominated for Best Independent Company\, and Rhiannon for Best Digital Choreography for her work on the DROWNTOWN ‘prequel’ DROWNTOWN LOCKDOWN.\nWatch the 17 minute film here. \nDROWNTOWN was named in the Evening Standard’s eight ‘Best dance shows to see in 2020’. \nIn The Observer dance critic and Killing Eve author Luke Jennings said of Rhiannon’s last show\, Smack That ( a conversation) ‘raw and eloquent with a final note of hope’ while The Guardian described it as ‘a party game to help change the world. The Stage hailed it as ‘Inventive\, demanding and immersive\, a work of urgent importance’ \n‘So many communities are broken\, people are drowning\, so something must be going wrong\,’ added Rhiannon. ‘Even Covid19 hasn’t really restarted the conversations with the wounds and emotions being effectively pushed down to the sea-bed. I want to reopen those conversations urgently’. \nPerformed by a cast of six (Shelley Eva Haden\, Donald Hutera\, Dom Coffey\, Sam Ford\, Marla King\, Finetta Oliver-Mikolajska) the show shines a light on individual suffering and discusses loneliness\, social isolation\, bereavement and suicide. Suitable for over 16s\, it contains strong language and scenes that some may find upsetting. \n1-6 June\nLondon Barbican Centre Silk Street EC2Y 8DS\n£pay what you feel\nhttps://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2021/event/rhiannon-faith-company-drowntown-film \nRhiannon Faith Company is the sector leader in professional and participatory socially conscious dance-theatre that has a lasting impact on audiences and participants. The company’s previous show Smack That (a conversation) looked at domestic violence\, premiered at the Barbican and toured through 2017\, 2018 and 2019\, receiving universal acclaim from critics and audiences. Rhiannon Faith is a choreographer and theatremaker who makes work that raises awareness and lobbies for change http://www.rhiannonfaith.com \nDROWNTOWN is presented by the Barbican\, co-produced by Harlow Playhouse\, commissioned by Cambridge Junction with commissioning support from DanceEast. SUMMARY:Wish You Were Here: 151 Years of the British Postcard
DESCRIPTION:Wish You Were Here celebrates the iconic role the postcard has played in connecting people for over 150 years. \nThe British postcard’s history began in 1870. An innovation of its time\, the postcard meant faster\, cheaper correspondence through the post. Artist Peter Liversidge\, known for his postal inspired artworks\, has created 4 unique postcard designs for the exhibition. Visitors can select a postcard to send\, keep\, or contemplate the thought-provoking ideas printed on the cards. \nThis temporary exhibition is included with entry to The Postal Museum. SUMMARY:Nature Walk: Chalk Streaming – Rivers Cray\, Darent and Thames
DESCRIPTION:This spring we invite you to walk the waterways of England\, navigating their gentle wildness alongside Sam Lee and special guest ecological pioneers.\nLeave your gadgets behind and spend a day chalk streaming together. \nLittle-known but quietly magnificent chalk streams are one of the UK’s natural wonders and ecological miracles. Despite all the environmental mistreatment they receive\, they continue to bubble up some of the finest waters in the land\, harbouring communities of life within and humans alongside. Their life-giving properties have shaped our nation\, inspired artists to create and conquerors to colonise. \nAs we walk we will take several moments en route to stop and explore the river together. SUMMARY:Lito Apostolakou - Clothes You'll Never Wear
DESCRIPTION:‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ is a participatory art installation that challenges the function of the retail space as a site of fast fashion consumption by transforming it into an immersive workshop and creative hub for making\, reusing and sharing. \nArtist in residence Lito Apostolakou uses waste materials to create textile sculptures based on personal stories\, memories and perceptions of identity. Drawing inspiration from visual\, textual\, and audio resources\, she invites members of the public to join her in using recyclable materials and waste fabric to create imaginary garments. \n‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ responds to the current precarious climate by transforming waste into visual expressions of identity and reimagining the high street as a centre of creativity. Princes Arcade links the cultural hub of the neighbouring Royal Academy with the bespoke menswear retailers of Jermyn Street\, with the project representing a conceptual and physical bridge between both. \nYou are invited to witness the collection of absurd garments develop and grow\, learn about the stories that inspired the pieces or tune into personal memories.

SUMMARY:Yoga for Smiles
DESCRIPTION:International children’s cleft charity\, Smile Train\, is excited to announce that their annual fundraiser\, Yoga for Smiles\, will return for 2021 – helping to bring some much needed ‘zen’ to our lives after a challenging year for many of us. \nYoga for Smiles encourages friends\, families\, colleagues\, and students across the UK to practice yoga whilst raising vital funds for Smile Train – so they can continue to support free cleft surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children globally. \nTo help lift spirits and keep the nation smiling\, Smile Train is encouraging people to ‘Give 5\, Take 5’ on International Day of Yoga (21 June) – by taking a five-minute break out of the day to stretch\, breathe deeply\, and smile\, then donate £5 to Smile Train. \nYoga focuses on the body\, breath\, and movement and can be a brilliant tool to manage and reduce stress – an emotion that has been heightened for many of us throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. So whether you choose to carry out your 5 minutes of yoga at home\, in the gym or at your local park\, you don’t need to bend over backwards to get involved. Five beginner poses to try include: \n1. Child’s pose: This is a very calming pose that gently stretches your lower back\, hips and thighs.\n2. Downward-facing dog: This pose helps to strengthen the arms\, shoulders and back.\n3. Tree pose: This can be carried out to improve balance and strengthen the core.\n4. Cat pose: A simple pose to help stretch the spine\, back muscles and neck. You can couple this with ‘Cow pose’\, which stretches the front of the torso and throat area to create a calming warm up.\n5. Bridge pose: Acting as an accessible backbend for most people\, this pose is a great way to strengthen the back\, glutes\, hamstrings\, and legs. \nMany children worldwide with cleft do not have access to proper treatment\, which can permanently impact their ability to eat\, breathe\, speak\, and ultimately thrive. To address this issue\, Smile Train empowers local medical professionals in 70+ countries with the training\, funding\, and resources they need to provide free cleft surgery and other forms of essential care to children in their own communities. \nAny funds raised through the Yoga for Smiles initiative will allow Smile Train to continue its’ life-changing work\, giving more children the opportunity to live healthy and productive lives. So\, get stretching and help to change the world one smile at a time! \nThose taking part in the fundraiser are encouraged to share their pose on social media\, tagging five friends to do the same and including the hashtag #YogaForSmiles.
