SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Like the exhibition\, these events are completely free to attend and require pre-booking. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. SUMMARY:Campfire Club: Tarren
DESCRIPTION:The Nest Collective invites you to enjoy a beautiful fireside concert with Tarren. \n\n\n\n\n\nRediscover one of life’s simplest joys – the sharing of live music in the glow of a campfire. \nEvery summer\, we gather in beautiful green spaces within cities to hear extraordinary music by artists from all over the world. \nIn the simple way that people have done for thousands of years\, we come together around the fire to enjoy music\, food\, drink and the company of others. \nFor this Campfire Club we are delighted to present Tarren. \nTarren is an ambassador for high quality\, English Folk music. Through the incorporation of minimalist musical forms into traditional-inspired material\, Tarren is producing music that draws the listener in\, weaving intricate themes throughout tunes and songs that have the pulse of English music at its heart. \nTarren is made up of Bristol-based artists Sid Goldsmith (Jimmy Aldridge & Sid Goldsmith\, Awake Arise)\, Alex Garden (The Drystones\, Harriet Riley & Alex Garden) and Danny Pedler (Pedler // Russell). They combine cittern and concertina\, fiddle\, and accordion to create their music.

This Is The Kit have created a name for themselves with songs that untangle emotional knots and weave remarkable stories. Now four albums in\, and based in Paris\, the story of This Is The Kit is itself one of time and change and listeners. Among these are Sharon Van Etten\, The National (Aaron Dessner appears multiple times on Moonshine Freeze)\, Chris Thile (of Nickel Creek\, Punch Brothers\, and now the host of A Prairie Home Companion)\, as well as Guy Garvey and much of BBC 6Music. \n\n\n\n\nhttps://thisisthekit.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\nGINA BIRCH released her first-ever solo single last year on Third Man Records called ‘Feminist Song’. SUMMARY:Guided Walk: Follow the Footsteps of Activist & Workers' Champion\, Francis Kitz
DESCRIPTION:‘Frankie Goes to Collywood’ is a walk dedicated to the life of times of a remarkable individual called Francis Kitz who devoted his life to supporting people caught up in the turbulent period of the late industrial revolution. \nWhether they were the very poorest Londoners\, oppressed workers or foreign refugees fleeing the pogroms in Europe\, he was on their side. Kitz was also a dyer and political ally of William Morris and it was working for him at the Merton Printworks that brought him to the Colliers Wood area. \nKitz’ contribution to working people on the Wandle was acknowledged earlier this year with the placing of a blue plaque and a number of Walks covering his central London connections and haunts. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is part of London Unseen and will be free to attend thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Commission for Diversity in the Public Realm.

SUMMARY:SOAS Library Exhibition and Tour - Narratives of Refugee Memories
DESCRIPTION:Including materials from British Ugandan Asians at 50\, SOAS’s Wolfson Gallery\, located inside the SOAS library is currently hosting an exhibition on ‘Narratives of Refugee Memories’ curated by Dr Sanjukta Ghosh (SOAS South Asia Institute). \n‘Unlocking SOAS Collections’\, the exhibits provide the creative lens to look again at the archives of Partition in 1947 and the post-Partition settlement history of displaced people of South Asia and beyond. Partition transcripts from India: A People Partitioned by the former BBC journalist and historian Andrew L. Whitehead\, papers of NGOs and campaigns such as War on Want\, news reports\, correspondences from local organisations and audio-visual materials held in SOAS Library are displayed. \nThe effects of Partition in this polyphonic narrative are\, however\, far-reaching and follow uncharted routes as family connections appear scattered. South Asia\, in this sense\, is not just restricted by its territories\, as the post-colonial diasporic subject shares a common history of the colonial past. The exhibition is enriched with original prints of diasporic artists such as Amarjeet Nandhra’s Displacement and Kamal Koria’s selection from the Journey series and Calamity. \nThe British Ugandan Asian exodus at 50 years ties with those who have the experience of dual migration and lineages from South Asia\, Africa to the UK. Focusing on photojournalism that ignited social and political campaigns worldwide\, a section is devoted to the photographs of the late Mohamed Amin — frontline cameraman extraordinaire (The Mohamed Amin Foundation\, Kenya). Collections from the British Ugandan Asians at 50 project (The India Overseas Trust)\, newspaper prints from Muktokotha archive at Moulvibazar (Bangladesh)\, sit alongside other personal collections — memorable ‘everyday’ artefacts that people carry as ‘belonging’ while leaving their old lives behind \nNazes Afroz\, the former Executive Editor for the South and Central Asia region of the BBC World Service has curated the West Wall exhibition Uncertain Landscape: refugee memories of Kolkata which features contrasting photographs of the past and transformations in the lives of individuals and families. \nTo book for the tour and talk of this exhibition please use the link below and select 17 August. The time for this tour is set at 5.30pm.
