SUMMARY:The Burden of Hate: Bridging the divide in unforgiving times
DESCRIPTION:The Forgiveness Project’s eighth Annual Lecture! \nOn the evening of Thursday\, 13 September at the beautiful Tabernacle in London’s Notting Hill\, we will be holding our eighth Annual Lecture. \nWe are delighted to welcome the American author\, commentator and community organiser Sally Kohn to the UK. As a progressive commentator on Fox News and now CNN\, Sally Kohn has made a career out of bridging intractable political differences and learning how to talk respectfully with people whose views she disagrees with passionately. \nSally Kohn will be exploring the epidemic of hate all around us – from internet trolls to school bullies\, from racist chants to homophobia – and what we can do to repair our humanity. \nSally’s recent book\, The Opposite of Hate: A Field Guide to Repairing Our Humanity\, investigates the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and how incivility can be a gateway to much worse. She talked with people from all around the world\, including many of The Forgiveness Project’s storytellers – Bassam Aramin\, Pardeep Kaleka\, Tony McAleer and Arno Michaelis – drawing surprising lessons from people who left hate behind. \nIn confronting her own shameful moments\, whether as a child bullying a classmate\, or today when she harbours deep partisan resentment\, Sally discovered\, ‘The opposite of hate is the beautiful and powerful reality of how we are all fundamentally linked and equal as human beings. The opposite of hate is connection.’ \nTickets: £22 (£12 concessions – low income)\nTime: 19:00 – 21:00\nVenue: The Tabernacle\, 35 Powis Square\, W11 2AY\nTransport: Nearest underground stations: Notting Hill Gate or Westbourne Park \nThe Forgiveness Project is an award-winning charity working with real stories to explore how forgiveness\, empathy and sharing stories can be used to break cycles of harm\, transform relationships and restore hope.

SUMMARY:O Gloriosa Domina - Renaissance Christmas Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Lovekyn Consort celebrates Christmas by exploring the rich harmonies of Renaissance Spain and its feasts\, in devotional and secular songs and joyful dance music. Period instruments are used to underly the unique style of Spanish music resulting from its combination of Christian\, Muslim and Jewish cultures. \nThe feast of Christmas was marked in Renaissance Spain by large processions and long and elaborate pieces of choral music\, sometimes consisting of a single melodic line. rather than the carols and hymns of later periods. \nThe performance will resemble a celebration at court\, with sacred songs to highlight the season as well as the more popular songs of love\, rivalry and mischief common throughout the year. \nThe Lovekyn Consort play instruments of the type originally used for their music. \nMusicians: Patricia Hammond – Voice; William Summers – Flute\, Recorder; Stephen Carpenter – Vihuela\, Guitar \nDoors open at 19:00\, performance 19:30 – 21:30\, ship closes at 22:00. \nIt will be cold aboard the ship during the winter\, please dress warmly.

SUMMARY:Under Red Skies: The Life and Times of a Chinese Millennial
DESCRIPTION:‘You can learn more about modern China through this compulsively readable memoir than from many weightier tomes.’ Barbara Demick\, former Beijing Bureau Chief of the Los Angeles Times and author of Nothing to Envy \nThe first English-language memoir from a Chinese millennial to be published. \nKaroline Kan was born in 1989\, the same year as the Tiananmen Square protests: her generation has always been caught between China’s political landscape\, its hyper-modern technology and urban and economic boom. \nThrough the stories of three generations of women in her family\, Kan provides us with a glimpse into the everyday lives of the country’s people against the backdrop of dizzingly rapid social change. Her grandmother – who struggled to make a way for her family during the Great Famine\, her mother – who defied the One-Child Policy by giving birth to Karoline\, and herself – born into a village peasant family but succeeding against all odds in gaining an education\, one that her mother and grandmother could scarcely have dreamed of. Kan will be in conversation with CEO of China Dialogue\, Isabel Hilton. \nThis will be Kan’s first London event and she will be signing copies of her book directly after the talk. \nAbout Karoline Kan\nKaroline Kan is a former New York Times reporter who writes about millennial life and politics in China. Currently an editor at China Dialogue\, she lives in Beijing. \nAbout Isabel Hilton\nIsabel Hilton is a London based writer and broadcaster and founder and CEO of chinadialogue.net.

SUMMARY:T.O.A.D. Show at Lesnes Abbey\, Bexley
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to our T.O.A.D. Show at Lesnes Abbey\, Bexley\, hosted by Froglife’s London Tails Of Amphibian Discovery (T.O.A.D.) Project. Come along for a fun day out for children and adults! \nThis event celebrates the successful pond restoration of Pine Pond carried out by Froglife and the local council in March 2019. Before the work\, Pine Pond had little native vegetation\, low oxygen levels and no breeding amphibians. Within 2 weeks of the restoration work\, toads were spotted breeding in the pond. The UK’s toad population has declined by 68% over the last 30 years so Pine Pond is now a valuable asset in helping the species survive. \nOur T.O.A.D Show will include a variety of free activities available for the public to get involved with\, including: \n• Free Wildlife Photography Workshops with an expert wildlife photographer\n• Virtual Reality Experience – See what life is like from a toad’s point-of-view!\n• Guided Walks around the site\n• Local street artists live-painting a mural of a common toad (1 of an edition of 7 in London)\n• Pond Doctor – Ask our resident expert any questions you have about amphibians or ponds\n• Information Stand – Learn how to identify London’s reptiles and amphibians and find out what it takes to build the perfect pond\n• Children’s activities

SUMMARY:Andrew Cook Talk: The Great Train Robbery
DESCRIPTION:Join Andrew Cook\, critically acclaimed historian and author of The Great Train Robbery: The Untold Story from the Closed Investigation Files to get under the skin of one of the best-known crimes in British History. \nDespite its vast media coverage\, many questions remain unanswered about The Great Train Robbery. Was it an inside job? Who was behind it? How did they get away with the crime of the century? \nAndrew will attempt to answer these questions to help piece together what really happened before\, during and after that fateful night of 8 August 1963 and understand why it became infamously known as ‘the crime of the century’. \nThe talk will be followed by a Q&A and book signing. Books will be available on the day to purchase. \nThe Postal Museum’s temporary exhibition The Great Train Robbery: Crime & the Post will be open before and after the event and access is included in the ticket price.

SUMMARY:Longing for Belonging - Film Screening and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Do you feel modern life is isolating? \nAre you interested in knowing what living in a thriving community looks like? \nThen come meet film-maker and author Helen iles who has travelled the world with the same questions\, and hear what she’s found out along the way. \nCurious about the human mechanisms which support communities to thrive\, Helen spends time with residents of intentional communities and co-housing projects. On her journey\, she encounters the Australian Aboriginal way of dadirri\, which speaks of a practice of deep listening – to land\, to ourselves and to each other. \nShe will also be reading from her new book “Hiraeth” about her journey through communities on opposite sides of the planet from Wales to Melbourne to Spain and reflects on the path in front of her as well as the path behind. \nShe will be available afterwards for a discussion and Q&A. \nThis is a pre-launch of Hiraeth which will not be available till 2020. You will be able to purchase a copy on the night and have it signed by Helen. The book is currently still in production\, more information will be available soon. Please click ‘Interested’ above to be updated or purchase a ticket now. \nThis event is supported by Eco Soul: Creating a not-for-profit hub and hostel in London based on values of sustainability\, social change and inner work. www.ecosoulhostel.com
