SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Dandelion Moon
DESCRIPTION:Step into the enchanting realm of artist Joseph Walsh’s transformative workshop\, where alchemy and artistic expression interweave. \nAs we approach May we see the emergence of the Dandelion Moon.  Flora of spring is appearing and some are nutrient rich to support our flourishing. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the coming months. \nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly smudged with Clary Sage and Rose to encourage chi flow and inspire clarity. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing\, accompanied by prompts and guidance on the techniques of plant gazing and observation. Joseph Walsh will guide you through a series of “warm up” exercises for shifting habitual ways of looking\, moving on to experimental longer durational drawing sketches. Prompts will be given to glean and speculate what may be communicated by shape\, form and behaviour\, what Anthropologist Gregory Bateson calls “transforms of environment”. \nTake a moment to ground yourself and reconnect with your body\, sipping on Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) tea\, cultivated and harvested from Joseph’s wildlife plot. Rich in vitamins\, minerals and antioxidants\, it pioneers and restores poor soil\, whilst in our own bodies\, it tonifies liver and kidneys. We will take influence from this earth regulator to set our own intentions into spring. As a special takeaway\, participants will receive a portion of this tea – an intentional offering for personal contemplation or to share with someone special. \nJoseph Walsh\, an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants. Using drawing\, painting and film to actualise a co-existing with nature. Having studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University\, he brings artistic insight to our journey. Joseph recently delivered the course ‘Floral Time: How Artists Describe Plants’ at the Berlin Art Institute\, workshops at Beaconsfield Gallery and No Show Project Space\, as well as sharing his expertise with art students at Goldsmiths and Reading University. \nThis workshop is designed for individuals who seek to deepen their connection with nature and explore their creative potential. No prior experience is required – just an open heart and a curious mind. While drawing materials will be provided\, feel free to bring your own sketchbooks and preferred materials to enhance your experience. \nBelow we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Joseph’s workshop\, as told by previous participants: \n“The workshop was well structured\, and thus we were able to connect with the plant on a deeper level. Joe is a meticulous facilitator. Thank you”. – participant \n“A very naturally held space offering freedom to be intuitive\, and be yourself. The time flowed perfectly. An exploration and very close look into the oneness\, mirroring thoughts within the group. What a full whole\, rich experience with the plants\, yourself and each other.” – participant \nReserve your spot now for an evening of inspiration and connection. A limited number of tickets are available free of charge for residents of Tower Hamlets. See you there!

SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Waxing Crescent Moon with artist Joseph Walsh
DESCRIPTION:As we approach July’s regenerative waxing moon\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the month ahead. \nIn alchemy\, the art of drawing plants holds a twofold significance. On one level it represents the material aspect of the alchemical process\, of sunlight and water becoming stem\, leaf and flower. On a deeper symbolic level\, the depiction of plants embodies the concept of growth and transformation\, informing the practitioner – an alchemical self. \nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly infused with frankincense – woody\, fresh and uplifting. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing\, accompanied by prompts and guidance on the techniques of plant gazing and observation. \nIn this two hour workshop we will explore the mysteries of plants through drawing\, painting\, and meditative observations\, we will go beyond the confines of the ordinary. We’ll take a moment to reconnect to our bodies and the living world through a serene Rose tea ceremony\, grounding ourselves in the present moment. \nAbout Joseph Walsh \nJoseph Walsh\, an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants. Using drawing\, painting and film to actualise a co-existing with nature. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University\, and recently delivered the course Floral Time: How Artists Describe Plants at the Berlin Art Institute\, workshops at Beaconsfield Gallery and No Show Project Space\, as well as sharing insights with art students at Goldsmiths and Reading University. \nWhat To Expect \nBelow we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Joseph’s workshop\, as told by previous participants: \n“The workshop was well structured\, and thus we were able to connect with the plant on a deeper level. Joe is a meticulous facilitator. Thank you”. – participant \n“A very naturally held space offering freedom to be intuitive\, and be yourself. The time flowed perfectly. An exploration and very close look into the oneness\, mirroring thoughts within the group. What a full whole\, rich experience with the plants\, yourself and each other.” – participant \nThe workshop will take place amidst the thought-provoking exhibition Thick\, Stretchy\, Sticky Space at IMT Gallery\, features digital paintings and video works by emerging multidisciplinary artist Fran Hayes that delve into speculative landscapes\, inspired by damaged ecologies\, science-fiction\, and the uncanny; all viewed through a profoundly human lens. \nThis workshop is designed for individuals who seek to deepen their connection with nature and explore their creative potential. No prior experience is required – just an open heart and a curious mind. While drawing materials will be provided\, feel free to bring your own sketchbooks and preferred materials to enhance your experience. \nFree spaces are available for Tower Hamlets residents\, courtesy of support from Tower Hamlets Community Chest. \nReserve your spot now – space is limited!

SUMMARY:Frame Rush 2024
DESCRIPTION:Screendance Festival at The Place\, Friday 13 September 2024 \nFrame Rush is an annual festival of screendance films programmed by the MA Screendance students from London Contemporary Dance School. The sixth edition centres around what it means to be present in today’s society and is an event not to be missed. A graduate and international programme offer something for all\, whether you are a film nerd\, someone who loves rhythm\, or are seeking creative inspiration from different perspectives.  \nThe Graduate Screening invites audience members to celebrate seven works from the 2023 MA Screendance cohort and former Frame Rush organisers. This programme highlights the supportive learning community and diverse range of subject matter screendance affords\, from surrealist ears to Bauhaus inspired bird watching. \nThe International Screening offers ten works expressing kinaesthetic empathy and questions on belonging. In this series\, sisterhood is expressed within the intersection of fashion\, film and dance; body percussionists move as nomadic storytellers through urban corridors\, neighbourhoods\, and green spaces in Montreal; and the subconscious is brought to life as green and blood lizards perform Palestinian folk songs in a Jazz bar. \nA 30-minute artist Q&A will follow both screenings\, providing audiences with the chance to gain unique insight into the artists’ creative processes.  \nFilms with dialogue include subtitles. \nEvent image credit: Film still from ‘Déjà Nu’ by Rolf Hellat

SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Vine Moon Workshop with Joseph Walsh
DESCRIPTION:Connect with Earth’s plant allies through drawing\, painting and tea ceremony… \nAs we approach September’s Waning Crescent Moon\, this workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the month ahead. \nIn alchemy\, the art of drawing plants holds a twofold significance. On one level it represents the material aspect of the alchemical process\, of sunlight and water becoming stem\, leaf and flower. On a deeper symbolic level\, the depiction of plants embodies the concept of growth and transformation\, informing the practitioner – an alchemical self* \nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly infused with Yarrow and Rosemary\, earthy and clearing. \nTake a moment to reconnect to our bodies and the living world through a serene tea ceremony\, grounding ourselves in the present moment. We will select from the hedgerow with hawthorn\, rosehip or hops. We will also consider the hedgerow as thicket\, stopover and shelter for beings. \nAbout Joseph Walsh \nJoseph Walsh\, an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants. Using drawing\, painting and film to actualise a co-existing with nature. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University\, and recently delivered the course Floral Time: How Artists Describe Plants at the Berlin Art Institute\, workshops at Beaconsfield Gallery and No Show Space\, as well as sharing insights with art students at Goldsmiths and Reading University. \nWhat To Expect \nBelow we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Joseph’s workshop\, as told by previous participants:\n“The workshop was well structured\, and thus we were able to connect with the plant on a deeper level. Joe is a meticulous facilitator. Thank you”. \n“A very naturally held space offering freedom to be intuitive\, and be yourself. The time flowed perfectly. An exploration and very close look into the oneness\, mirroring thoughts within the group. What a full whole\, rich experience with the plants\, yourself and each other.”\n\n“Mindful\, healing\, educational\, communal” \nWhile drawing materials will be provided\, feel free to bring your own sketchbooks and preferred materials to enhance your experience. \n*Observations made by Joseph plant gazing under waxing crescent moon\, with rose – “In alchemy the rose is symbolic of conjunction\, it is supporting and underlying the marriage of opposites. Soft\, buffering\, slowing down. Small insects dwell within petals\, cushioned\, intoxicated. This is how it felt for me too. The bee moves closer to the centre\, three rounds of rose tea. Perfumed aroma in swirls and spirals\, circular time. Definition and edge dissolved. Petals unfurling. Surrender myself to it. Rose is associated with love and romance”. \nReserve your spot now for an evening of inspiration and connection. A limited number of tickets are available free of charge for residents of Tower Hamlets. These places have been lovingly created with support from Tower Hamlets Council. \nSee you there!

Heart tonic\, thicket thickening\, berry red of cardiovascular\, a stopover for birds. Branches shift and alter according to the environment; each lobed leaf differs. The doctrine of signatures\, where plant forms are like body parts\, is the heart as an organ of perception. \nA tiny amount of berries dotting the tree\, gleaning the teeniest amount. It’s before winter\, amongst fullness rather than emptiness.” \nReserve your spot now for an evening of inspiration and connection. SUMMARY:Plant Gazing: Under Saille Moon Workshop with Joseph Walsh
DESCRIPTION:Connect with Earth’s plant allies through drawing\, painting and tea ceremony… \nThe moon in Sagittarius is an ideal moment to receive knowledge from other kinds of consciousness. This workshop offers a unique opportunity to connect with plant allies and set personal intentions for the month ahead. \nIn alchemy\, the art of drawing plants holds a twofold significance. On one level\, it represents the material aspect of the alchemical process of sunlight and water becoming stem\, leaf and flower. On a deeper symbolic level\, the depiction of plants embodies the concept of growth and transformation\, informing the practitioner – an alchemical self* \nImmerse yourself in the IMT Gallery space\, subtly smudged with mugwort to encourage chi flow. A curated selection of plants will be available for drawing\, accompanied by prompts and guidance on plant gazing and observation techniques. \nIn this two-hour workshop\, we will explore the mysteries of plants through drawing\, painting\, and meditative observations\, going beyond the confines of the ordinary. \nWe reconnect to our bodies and the living world through a serene tea ceremony\, grounding ourselves in the present moment. We will look at Ground Ivy\, which is aromatic\, clearing\, and warming. \nJoseph Walsh is an artist rooted in forging human-nature connections through his work with plants. Using drawing\, painting and film to actualise a co-existing with nature. He studied Fine Art at Goldsmiths University and recently delivered Floral Time: How Artists Describe Plants at the Berlin Art Institute\, workshops at Beaconsfield Gallery and No Show Space\, and shared insights with art students at Goldsmiths and Reading University. \nWhat To Expect \nBelow\, we offer you a glimpse of what to expect from Joseph’s workshop\, as told by previous participants: \n“The workshop was well structured\, and thus\, we connected with the plant on a deeper level. Joe is a meticulous facilitator. Thank you”. \n“A naturally held space offers freedom to be intuitive and be yourself. The time flowed perfectly. An exploration and very close look into the oneness\, mirroring thoughts within the group. What a rich experience with the plants\, yourself and each other.” \nPlease bring your preferred drawing materials and sketchbook; materials will also be provided. \n*In Permaculture\, ‘guilds ‘ are the names for a collective of plants\, each contributing to the ecology. Like a loungey spread\, Ground Ivy is ground cover at woodland edges and shady wasteland\, creeping along the earth\, a veneer for dank and damp domains.\nIt is connected to witchcraft\, as it was said to drive off other flora. But that is not what I notice. It occupies gaps and crevices as if palming or sealing them\, and other plants grow in this situation. ’ Cat foot‘ is another name. \nIn the doctrine of signatures\, where the herb looks like what it cures\, its toothed curvy leaves resemble human ears and appealing sound waves; it is medicine for tinnitus and earache. \n🎟️ Reserve your spot now for an evening of inspiration and connection. A limited number of tickets are available free of charge for residents of Tower Hamlets. These places have been lovingly created with support from Tower Hamlets Council. \nSee you there!

SUMMARY:The Launching of the Mary: A Script-in-Hand Exploration
DESCRIPTION:THE LAUNCHING OF THE MARY: A Script-in-Hand Exploration\n  \n“The launching of a ship? This modern age\nhath seldom seen such action on a stage.”\n \nAlmost 400 years since it was written at sea\, come step into the riverside world of Walter Mountfort’s The Launching of the Mary. \n  \nDuring his ‘return from East India in 1632\, Walter Mountfort spent his idle hours writing a play. Set in a London shipyard\, complete with sprawling subplots and a range of colourful characters\, The Launching of the Mary immerses readers in a bustling riverside world. As shipyard artisans prepare to launch a ship\, while marine officers debate the ethics of overseas trade\, the mariner’s wife\, Dorotea Constance\, defends her home against a torrent of suitors. This workshop invites participants to explore this unknown Renaissance play through a lively but relaxed script-in-hand reading\, partly city comedy\, part domestic tragedy\, and part something else entirely. \nNo prior knowledge or performance experience is required to participate. A lightly abridged\, modern spelling edition of the play has been produced specially for this event\, and participants are invited to read\, listen\, or both. The session will conclude with a section for Q&A and the chance to reflect on the experience of encountering this curious play. \n  \nTuesday 6 May 2025\, 14:00-16:30 \nKeynes Library\, 43 Gordon Square\, London\, WC1H 0PD \nhttps://www.bbk.ac.uk/events/event/49292/the-launching-of-the-mary-a-script-in-hand-exploration
