SUMMARY:100 Days to Peace
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an evening of music and reflection to mark the centenary of the last 100 days of hostilities during the First World War. \nThe highlight of the evening’s programme will be Sir Karl Jenkins conducting his internationally acclaimed work The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace\, performed by the Royal Choral Society and the Philharmonia Orchestra. This will be the only performance of ‘The Armed Man’ in England in 2018 to be conducted by Sir Karl himself. \nThe evening will be presented by Lesley Garrett CBE who will also be performing\, alongside British mezzo-soprano Kathryn Rudge. \nAll proceeds from this event will go to three charities working to support military veterans facing mental health challenges: Help for Heroes\, Combat Stress and Heads Together – The Royal Foundation’s campaign and mental health initiative. \nAt the end of the First World War many thousands of men returned home suffering from shell-shock. With minimal understanding of the condition\, many did not benefit from the type of support which is increasingly available today. Although circumstances have changed significantly over the last 100 years\, we are ever more aware of the number of veterans who continue to need support because they suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder\, anxiety or depression. \nAs the national museum of arms and armour\, the Royal Armouries tells the stories of the men and women who have been involved in and affected by combat throughout history. As music will be at the heart of this classical evening it is fitting that Sir Karl Jenkin’s will conduct his internationally acclaimed ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’ – originally commissioned by the Royal Armouries to mark the turn of the millennium to create a legacy of peace and hope for the future. \nA better future\nChairman of the Royal Armouries\, General the Lord Dannatt GBC CBE MC DL\, comments: ‘Tragically\, the First World War did not turn out to be ‘the war to end war’ but then\, as now\, by marking the centenary of the end of the last 100 days of hostilities with this commemorative concert\, we can hope and pray for a better future. Part of that better future is helping those who have been affected by war and conflict.’

SUMMARY:The Burden of Hate: Bridging the divide in unforgiving times
DESCRIPTION:The Forgiveness Project’s eighth Annual Lecture! \nOn the evening of Thursday\, 13 September at the beautiful Tabernacle in London’s Notting Hill\, we will be holding our eighth Annual Lecture. \nWe are delighted to welcome the American author\, commentator and community organiser Sally Kohn to the UK. As a progressive commentator on Fox News and now CNN\, Sally Kohn has made a career out of bridging intractable political differences and learning how to talk respectfully with people whose views she disagrees with passionately. \nSally Kohn will be exploring the epidemic of hate all around us – from internet trolls to school bullies\, from racist chants to homophobia – and what we can do to repair our humanity. \nSally’s recent book\, The Opposite of Hate: A Field Guide to Repairing Our Humanity\, investigates the evolutionary and cultural roots of hate and how incivility can be a gateway to much worse. She talked with people from all around the world\, including many of The Forgiveness Project’s storytellers – Bassam Aramin\, Pardeep Kaleka\, Tony McAleer and Arno Michaelis – drawing surprising lessons from people who left hate behind. \nIn confronting her own shameful moments\, whether as a child bullying a classmate\, or today when she harbours deep partisan resentment\, Sally discovered\, ‘The opposite of hate is the beautiful and powerful reality of how we are all fundamentally linked and equal as human beings. The opposite of hate is connection.’ \nTickets: £22 (£12 concessions – low income)\nTime: 19:00 – 21:00\nVenue: The Tabernacle\, 35 Powis Square\, W11 2AY\nTransport: Nearest underground stations: Notting Hill Gate or Westbourne Park \nThe Forgiveness Project is an award-winning charity working with real stories to explore how forgiveness\, empathy and sharing stories can be used to break cycles of harm\, transform relationships and restore hope.

SUMMARY:Those Who Dream: Christian Reflections on Migration
DESCRIPTION:Theology is a subject on perspective of religious scriptures. Take a deeper look at Europe’s Migration in the Christian point of view. \nHere is the description of event from\, https://www.unionchapel.org.uk/event/27-10-2018-those-who-dream/  : \nClaude Moraes MEP – Labour MEP and Chair of the European Parliament’s Civil Liberties\, Justice and Home Affairs Committee\nDorottya Nagy – Professor of Missiology\, Protestant University of Amsterdam\nAlfredo Abad—President Evangelical Church of Spain and Secretary of the Comisión de Ayuda al Refugiado\nJerry Kramer – Vicar General of Zanzibar Heather Roy – Secretary General\, Eurodiaconia\nTsaurayi Mapfeka – Methodist Church of Zimbabwe\nSimon Jones – Director of Ministerial Training\, Spurgeon’s College\nDanny Sriskandarajah – General Secretary\, Civicus\nNadine Daniel – National Refugee Coordinator\, Church of England\nJenny Brown – Christian Aid Tatiana Garavito – Society of Friends \nA theological event which will: \nHonour Christian work for justice for refugees and migrants;\nRaise our eyes beyond crisis responses;\nSeek guidance in the sources of our faith; and\nAsk ourselves what we can do better\, what more we can do and what we should do next.\nIt will engage Christian activists and those with curious minds who are committed to justice for refugees and migrants. Focusing on European responsibilities and standing up for the rights of those excluded by unjust systems. \nChristians identify with the Jewish experience of exile and diaspora and the longing for home. This is both enriching and painful. God travels with the migrant spreading seeds of faith and hope in spite of challenges. God also travels with the Church in its journeying toward the Kingdom. \nOur contemporary world puts intense restrictions on those who dream of a better future for themselves and their families. Migration provokes hostility and the increasingly hostile environment is profoundly worrying for the Christian conscience. Dreamers are those who hope for a change of fortune and a home\, where they belong. \nThe day will: \nChallenge UK isolationism;\nDeep dive into biblical conceptions within the Hebrew and early church experience of migration;\nHear how theological reflection can move into political and social change;\nAllow participants to share action.\nChristian initiatives will be showcased and there will be encouragement to develop local action and national campaigning. The event will be creative and engaging\, fast moving and reflective. \nREGISTER to ensure a seat

SUMMARY:KOMRAUS & Guest Acts Live for Refugees
DESCRIPTION:KOMRAUS and S M M group organise this especial music event to raise funds for CEAR (the Spanish Commission Helping Refugees) and in particular for the LGBT refugees that suffer intorable situations.\n+ Guest Acts: Lili Caseley and Umbrela Arts Collective Djs \nFREE Entry- all donations to CEAR. \nKomraus will release on the 2nd of Nov their second single with M.A.R.S. Label Group\, titled ‘Untie the ropes’. This song empowers freedom and being yourself with no fear. So it will be the anchor song that marks the beginning of the collaboration between KOMRAUS and CEAR. Funds from the single\, merch and event will go directly to CEAR.\nAlbum to be released in Jan 2019 after a successful year of London headlines shows and International touring. \nMore info on:\nhttp://www.komraus.com\nhttps://www.cear.es/ \nGUEST ACTS:\nLili Caseley:\nHailing from North London\, Lili Caseley is a multi-talented singer and songwriter who’s winning the hearts of fans and critics alike with her meaningful soul pop about lovers and experiences\, past and present. Her songs\, deceptively simple in structure but teeming with emotional honesty\, are influenced by her Portuguese heritage\, legendary poets and the biggest pop talents of today.\nYet to release her debut EP\, she’s already won support from respected music titles like Clash and Notion\, while receiving coveted airplay from Radio 1xtra’s Toddla T on Target’s show and Radio 6’s Tom Robinson\, on his BBC Introducing mixtape show.\nhttp://www.lilicaseley.com \nUmbrela Collective Djs will also perform on the night. Artists from different cultures\, languages and backgrounds from around the world\, who aim to spread ideas of globalis\, open-mindness and all types of art.\nDjs: Crowse\, Go by Luck and Vladimir Kusijanovic. \nWWW.WEAREUMBRELA.COM \nMore details on the full line up soon. \nThis will be a FREE event and all donations will be directly passed to CEAR. The non-for profit organization that is doing a remarkable work for the last 40 years in Spain\, that has been welcoming refugees for over years. \nDoors will open at 7 pm. \nKOMRAUS organises the event ‘Untie the ropes’ helping to raise awareness and funds for the LGBT Refugees. 6th of Nov at The Victoria\, Dalston. In collaboration with MARS Label Group from The Netherlands\, CEAR (Spanish Commission Helping Refugees) and Jaguarshoes collective in London.\nUntie the ropes is also the title of the new KOMRAUS song and music video that will be out from the 2nd and 6th of Nov respectively. Untie the ropes is a song about personal growth\, freedom and self-respect. With this song KOMRAUS wants to remind us all that we are free to choose what we want to be. That’s the reason why they support with this song all the brave ones that are living complicated situations as refugees: the LGBT refugees.\nKOMRAUS is a band formed in London by European successful professional musicians that with their next single feel the urge to raise awareness about the refugees situation and in particular the LGBT refugees. KOMRAUS members were all somehow migrants themselves when they first arrived in London many years ago and now they feel again the uncertainty\, like many others\, of Brexit. Sara Rioja\, the singer and one of the composers of the band\, is originally Spanish; Spain is one the countries welcoming more refugees in the last 30 years\, so the band decided to start a collaboration with one of the biggest not for profit organizations in this subject: CEAR. Over 350\,000 people have been attended and helped by CEAR in the last 10 years. The non- for-profit organization has been working for 40 years in awareness\, education\, social integration and international human rights. ‘Untie the ropes’ and KOMRAUS will be a bridge to communicate in other territories the job that CEAR (the Spanish Commission helping refugee’s) does and in particular for the LGBT community. All funds from the single\, merch and concerts will be directed to CEAR.\nThe song was recorded Live in one take (as all the other songs in the upcoming album) at Andy Whitmore Studios in West London (Lemar\, Eternal\, Elton John). The band keeps the magic and communication of the live performance in this unique recording.\nThe empowering music-video of Untie the ropes will see the light on the 6th of November\, coinciding with the headline show that KOMRAUS organizes at The Victoria in London to raise funds for CEAR (Spanish Commission Helping refugees) and for the LGBT Refugees. The music video follows the aesthetic of previous KOMRAUS music videos\, always directed by the talented Pedro Caxade\, who has worked before for Channel 4\, Sky TV and in a film with the likes of Aidan Gillen. He has shaped the magical visual world of KOMRAUS in their brand image and music videos. The new video will be another sign of the well looked after artistic and musical work of the band.

SUMMARY:Debugging the human brain
DESCRIPTION:Summary\nOver a billion people suffer from a brain disorder\, few of which are well-treated by existing drugs or devices.\nA key problem is that the brain is a complex\, densely wired circuit made out of neurons\, varying in shape\, biomolecular composition\, and patterns of connectivity.\nPinpointing how to treat brain disorders demands better maps of the brain\, as well as better understanding of brain dynamics\, and the knowledge of how to correct these dynamics when they go awry.\nThis exciting evening talk will explore Professor Boyden’s research into this field of neuroscience\, linking engineering principles with a core medical problem – how do you reprogram a brain that is misfiring? \nSpeaker\nEd Boyden\, Associate Professor of Biological Engineering and Brain and Cognitive Sciences at the MIT Media Lab and the MIT McGovern Institute. \nWho should attend?\n– Researchers (industry\, academia)\n– University students\n– Neurologists / Neurobiologists\n– Biotechnologists\n– Healthcare professionals\n– Professionals interested in the fields of optogenetics and synthetic neurobiology\n– Organisations involved in research concerning brain diseases and treatment\, including charities\, academic institutions\, and industry \nRegister\nFree to attend evening talk followed by a networking drinks reception\nSecure your place today by booking online: http://www.theiet.org/boyden
