SUMMARY:Under the Covers: Andrew Davies (In person) | The London Library
DESCRIPTION:Bibliotherapist Ella Berthoud brings her illuminating Under the Covers series of talks back to The London Library\, with the undisputed maestro of literary adaptation\, the mighty Andrew Davies. \nOver his incredibly illustrious career\, Andrew Davies has written his way into British cultural history\, adapting classic literature into classic works for the screen\, from Pride and Prejudice to House of Cards\, Bleak House to Bridget Jones. Now\, in his latest work\, he turns his razor-sharp pen on himself. An Unsuitable Boy is a memoir that weaves together wit\, irreverence and vulnerability to reflect on a life of writing\, loving\, adapting\, collaborating and surviving. From post-war Cardiff to the BBC boardroom\, from Broadway flops to French farmhouses with Robert Altman\, this is the story of what happens behind the scripts. \nIn conversation with Ella Berthoud\, on the biblio-couch\, he’ll discuss the memoir\, the life\, the scripts\, and the books that have shaped and inspired him\, before receiving his bibliotherapeutic analysis and prescription. \nAndrew Davies is a multi-award-winning screenwriter\, novelist and former academic. He is best known for his adaptations of Pride and Prejudice\, Middlemarch\, War and Peace\, Bleak House\, House of Cards and Bridget Jones’s Diary. His original work includes A Very Peculiar Practice\, Game On and Filthy Rich. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and a BAFTA and Emmy winner. His memoir An Unsuitable Boy: A Life in Scripts is published in September 2026. \nElla Berthoud is a bibliotherapist\, artist and co-author of The Novel Cure: An A-Z of Literary Remedies. She has been prescribing literary cures to readers everywhere for many years. \nOur events programme is presented in partnership with Hakluyt & Company\, the global strategic advisory firm for businesses and investors. \nBooks by both speakers will be available to buy at the event and online from our partner bookshop Hatchards. \nThis event will take place in person at The London Library. Doors (and the bar) will open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Please see our Event Access Guidelines before you arrive. \nLondon Library events are subject to Terms & Conditions

SUMMARY:Music Hath No Borders - South African Buskaid Ensemble in Concert - 21.08.26
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a magical fundraising concert with ten members of the internationally renowned South African Buskaid Ensemble – a performance of live classical music from Handel and Elgar to township Kwela music. \nThis is a poignant venue for Buskaid: Buskaid’s Founder\, Rosemary Nalden\, is the daughter of the late Charles Nalden CBE\, one of Coram’s most distinguished foundlings. The Buskaid musicians are themselves no strangers to hardship: like Coram\, Buskaid offers transformative opportunities for less advantaged young people. \nFor this musical celebration\, Rosemary has chosen music to link both charities\, including the Chaconne from Terpsichore by Handel\, Coram’s most famous benefactor\, and Elgar’s Sospiri\, honouring Rosemary’s father\, an accomplished harpist who loved the music of Edward Elgar. The concert will end with a rousing burst of township ‘Kwela’ music\, arranged by the Buskaid musicians themselves. \nTickets and Timings \nTickets can be booked on Eventbrite. \nAll tickets include a welcome drink\, and private access to the Foundling Museum‘s exhibition\, including the special exhibition display\, 300 Years of the ‘Rival Queens’: Handel’s 1726 Opera Season. \n6 pm: Access to the Foundling Museum for all guests. \n7 pm-9 pm: Concert with interval. \nAbout Buskaid \nThe Buskaid Music School was founded by Rosemary Nalden in 1997 in response to requests from the less privileged local community in Diepkloof Soweto. At its inception\, it comprised just 15 children; its current membership stands at 82. To meet this demand\, in 2002 Buskaid initiated a teacher-training course for all its students; all the musicians playing tonight are employed by Buskaid as highly-skilled string teachers. \nThe Buskaid Ensemble is world-renowned for its high-performance standards and its innate grasp of musical style\, and as a result\, has undertaken 28 international tours to Europe and the Americas. It is the only African orchestra to have performed at the BBC Proms. \nThe Ensemble has collaborated with many distinguished artists such as Sir John Eliot Gardiner\, Melvyn Tan\, Steven Isserlis and Karl Jenkins. It has performed in the presence of numerous dignitaries\, notably the late Nelson Mandela\, Her late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II\, King Charles III\, and Michelle Obama. \nProgramme \nJean-Philippe Rameau – Air pour les Guerriers; Entrée De Polymnie; Contredanses I & II \nHenry Purcell – Fairest Isle; Rondeau; If Love’s a Sweet Passion; Chaconne \nEdward Elgar – Sospiri (Sighs) \nJean Sibelius – Impromptu \nGeorge Frideric Handel – Terpsichore HWV 8b: Chacconne \nKwela\, Afro-jazz and Afro-pop (Arr. Buskaid musicians) \nBook Classical String Ensembles for Events in the UK via Music for London.

SUMMARY:Don Quixote: Where Passion\, Fire and Every Body Takes the Stage - London Theatre
DESCRIPTION:London Ballet Theatre brings Don Quixote to London this May\, and if you have ever thought that ballet is not for you\, this is the production that will change your mind entirely. \nLondon Ballet Theatre is not like other ballet companies. Built on the belief that dance belongs to everybody\, LBT opens its stage to dancers of all backgrounds\, ages\, abilities\, and body types. There is no body shaming here\, no impossible physical ideal to conform to\, no single vision of what a dancer must look like. LBT Pro brings together accomplished professional artists performing at the very highest level\, while LBT Community welcomes dancers of every experience and ability into the same creative family. Both share the same stage\, the same passion\, and the same conviction that everyone has a role. This is what #ForDancersByDancers truly means\, and you will feel it the moment the curtain rises. \nOn stage\, Don Quixote is pure joy. Set to Minkus’s irresistible\, endlessly energetic score\, it is one of the most vibrant and exhilarating ballets in the classical repertoire: a story of romance\, adventure\, comedy\, and the magnificent stubbornness of the human spirit. LBT’s production is performed with breathtaking passion and technical brilliance\, and it has been crafted to be as thrilling for a first-time audience as it is for a lifelong ballet devotee. \nWhat makes this production truly distinctive is the way it brings the story to life. Video narrations introduce each scene before the dancing begins\, gently and engagingly guiding every audience member into Cervantes’s world so that no one ever feels lost or excluded. Cinematic projections form a vivid\, atmospheric backdrop throughout\, transporting the audience to the sun-drenched plazas and golden landscapes of Spain. The result is a seamless and spellbinding fusion of live ballet\, film and visual artistry that feels unlike anything else currently on the London stage. \nThis season is presented in proud cooperation with the Lord Mayor of Westminster and the British Film Festival. London Ballet Theatre is a sell-out company\, and audiences are warmly encouraged to secure their tickets early. \nWhether you are bringing someone to their very first ballet\, looking for a spectacular and unusual evening out\, or searching for a performance that genuinely reflects the diversity and spirit of this city\, Don Quixote at London Ballet Theatre is your answer. \nLooking to hire Dancers for your Next Events. Music for London has a dedicated dancers for hire category.

SUMMARY:The Borgen Project - Informational Event
DESCRIPTION:This informational event offers an introduction to The Borgen Project\, a non-partisan international organisation dedicated to reducing global poverty through policy advocacy\, public engagement\, and citizen-led action. The session is designed for students\, young professionals\, and members of the public who are interested in global development\, international affairs\, and the role of advocacy in shaping effective public policy. \n\n\nGlobal poverty remains one of the most pressing challenges of our time. Despite decades of progress\, conflict\, climate change\, economic instability\, and reductions in development assistance continue to threaten vulnerable populations worldwide. This event aims to provide clear\, accessible insight into how global poverty is addressed at the policy level\, and why political engagement remains a critical tool in achieving long-term\, sustainable solutions. \n\n\nDuring the session\, attendees will be introduced to the mission and activities of The Borgen Project\, with an overview of how the organisation engages with the public on issues related to global poverty and international development. The presentation will outline the relationship between policy decisions and development outcomes\, including how government priorities and public engagement can shape approaches to poverty reduction\, food security\, health\, and education. The focus will be on explaining these dynamics clearly and accessibly\, rather than advocating for a specific political position. \n\n\nThe event will also offer an overview of current global development issues\, including the impact of cuts to overseas development assistance\, the links between poverty and global security\, and the growing role of youth engagement in international policy discussions. Rather than focusing on abstract concepts\, the session will highlight real-world examples of how advocacy efforts have contributed to measurable policy outcomes in recent years. \n\n\nThis is an informational and discussion-focused event. It does not require prior knowledge of global development or policy\, and is intended to be accessible to anyone with an interest in international issues and social impact. There will be time for questions\, allowing participants to engage directly with the topics presented and to better understand how individual actions can contribute to broader policy change. \n\n\nAttendance is open to all\, and the event is suitable for those curious about global poverty\, advocacy\, and international development\, as well as for those considering further involvement in civic engagement\, NGOs\, or policy-related careers. While the session introduces opportunities for engagement\, its primary aim is to inform and raise awareness\, rather than to fundraise or promote a specific campaign. \n\n\nBy the end of the event\, participants will have a clearer understanding of how global poverty is addressed through policy\, the role organisations like The Borgen Project play in advocacy efforts\, and the ways in which informed citizens can participate meaningfully in shaping development outcomes.
