SUMMARY:Kūnlún\, Michael & Chiyan Ho - Unique Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Chinese Art Exhibition in London\nThe mountains of Kūnlún\, in ancient Chinese mythology\, are the dwelling place of gods and fantastic beasts. They are also\, of course\, an actually existing mountain range. This mystical locale\, situated somewhere between reality and myth\, provides a particularly apt window into the practice of Michael and Chiyan Ho. The duo studied architecture at the Architectural Association in London before developing an idiosyncratic painting practice that involves pushing specks of acrylic paint from the back of the canvas to the front to form the backdrop\, then switching to oil to paint the figures on top. In this laborious process\, marked by both formal ingenuity and symbolic fecundity\, an enigmatic space—one in which ambiguous protagonists lie afloat in nocturnal fields of lush foliage—is called into existence. \nV.O Curations is pleased to announce Kūnlún\, the first solo exhibition by artist duo\, Michael and Chiyan Ho. Comprising seven new oil and acrylic paintings\, this new body of work developed during their residency\, employs myth\, metaphor and magical realist narratives as a form of worlding and to explore Chinese diasporic identity.\nA newly commissioned text by writer and curator\, Alvin Li\, will accompany the exhibition.

SUMMARY:'Breezy'\, Gabriela Giroletti - Art Exhibition in London
DESCRIPTION:“Breezy” \nGabriela Giroletti \nNovember 19th – December 18th 2021\nKristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, 533 Old York Road\, Wandsworth \nPrivate View: Thursday\, November 18th\, from 6:30 – 9 pm \nKristin Hjellegjerde Gallery is pleased to present Breezy\, a presentation of new paintings by Gabriela Giroletti at the gallery’s Wandsworth location. Breezy is her first solo presentation with the gallery and is on view from November 19th to December 18th\, 2021. \nTo look at Giroletti’s work is to be enveloped in an animated terrain where swollen masses with shimmering surfaces writhe and crawl\, locked into what seems like a territorial competition. In amongst the maelstrom\, roots get diverted\, growths get stunted and billowing excesses crunch. Our vantage point onto this world shifts from painting to painting. At times we appear to be above ground. At others\, we have fallen down a rabbit hole and are tunnelling under the earth. But as we turn the burrow’s bends\, the walls shift like tectonic plates before transforming back into the sky\, revealing the inside to have been outside all along. \nGiroletti is interested in the notion of the in-between\, and the paintings are full of things on a journey from one state of being to another. The landscape undergoes this restless mutation\, and the forms that inhabit it often seem to be expanding beyond their capacity or deflating as the animating energy leaves them and moves onto something new. Indeed breeziness\, the sense of movement in the flickering planes that are to be found throughout the work\, is itself an in-between condition; neither windy nor still\, Breezy accelerates and decelerates indecisively between the two. \nThis stirred motion is rendered by layers of delicate directional brushstrokes of varying hues that build into a diaphanous pointillism. In “Heat Haze”\, for example\, streams of fizzing dots intermingle\, generating ripples of modulating the intensity. In “Spatial Places”\, these dots throb and scatter like water droplets on a train window. Again\, radiation or gaseousness come to mind\, not least when the skies gleam amber orange or sap green. \nThe more minor works are more fragment-like. They lean towards inert mineral colours\, like charcoaled fossils or bits of rock. In paintings like “Tralalitions” or “Last Not Least”\, the paint is heaped\, dug and scraped\, making the surface seem like part of an excavation. Here\, subtle variations of tone poke through the mottled texture\, echoing the optical energy of the larger paintings. \nSpatial disjuncture is another theme that underlies the work. In the smaller pieces\, devices reminiscent of collage techniques\, like cuts and fold-ins\, are experimented with. For instance\, in “Some Things Cosmic II”\, thick seams appear between the forms\, stitching them together into assemblages. Also\, an adjunct\, in the form of a perched mound of paint\, materialises on top of the stretcher bar as an extension of a shape within. This causes the painting to flip ambiguously between pictorial space and objecthood. \nThese experiments get scaled up in the more significant works where they evolve further. For instance\, in “Transparent Things”\, the seams between the forms are accompanied by an overlaid fade and a drop shadow. Both elements have widths that remain constant round\, stamping out the edge\, emphasising its status as a border. And in “Compass”\, dark orbs that start by hugging internal thresholds within the picture escape and re-appear as separate panels on the wall. This melding together of different spaces creates an array of formal possibilities\, and our attention is drawn to the innovative decisions that have taken place in the making process. As we witness the development of the devices from painting to painting\, we start to imagine what it would be like if we combined them differently\, taking a bit from one image and placing it on another\, like pieces in a board game. \nThe use of emptiness in work also conjures up this sense of possibility. Although Giroletti draws from everyday life when conceiving her compositions\, most real-world details are stripped out\, leaving the shapes smooth\, striated surfaces. Giroletti doesn’t seek to represent the specifics of particular objects so much as the relations between them. This use of voids\, cuts and in-between states is what makes the arrangements inherently open and playful. The viewer feels on the verge of stepping into the frame\, picking up one of the forms\, and participating in the world-building themselves. \nAbout Gabriela Giroletti\nGabriela Giroletti (B. 1982) is a Brazilian painter living and working in London. She graduated with a BA in Fine Arts from Middlesex University\, London\, in 2015 and received her MFA in Fine Art from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2018. With her work\, Gabriela explores the relationship between the painted image (the meaning\, the immaterial\, the metaphor\, the mind) and the material presence in the painting (the human\, the touch\, the physical reality\, the body). Deliberately ambiguous\, the pictures fluctuate between their crude materiality and their metaphysical aspect\, encouraging the viewer to formulate peculiar connections with our tangible surroundings as well as with individual and unique lived experiences.

SUMMARY:We Gather – Craft Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:We Gather – Craft Exhibition featuring five female makers of Black and Asian Heritage\nNew Crafts Council exhibition We Gather features five female makers of Black and Asian heritage whose work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value\, 17 November 2021 – 5 February 2022 \nWe Gather exhibition opens at the Crafts Council Gallery on 17 November and features five female Black and Asian heritage artists. Whilst their chosen materials and disciplines vary\, their work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value. The makers are Shaheen Ahmed\, Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings\, Francisca Onumah and Onome Otite. \nThe title We Gather refers to the gathering of ideas\, skills and emotions embedded within these five craft practices and the meeting of perspectives that have been underrepresented in the industry. It is also a symbol of gratitude towards the communities who gathered their courage\, bodies\, and voices to support justice for Black lives\, which instigated deeper conversations between the UK’s Black makers and the Crafts Council. \n“This exhibition has offered us a unique opportunity to curate in honour of women who share similar experiences and frames of reference to our own\, but also within a mainstream cultural organisation that we haven’t traditionally seen ourselves reflected in. We are excited to bring together their collection of works\, which offer audiences fresh visibility to crafts that has emotional depth\, space and social resonance.” Curators of We Gather\, Rosie Ross & Griffi. \nThe We Gather exhibition came out of Craft Expertise\, the AHRC-funded UKRI/RCUK Innovation Fellowship led by Dr Karen Patel of Birmingham City University\, collaborating with Crafts Council. The research aimed to raise awareness of inequalities in the current craft economy in the UK and highlight the various challenges women of colour face in the sector. \nCommissioned by Dr Karen Patel as part of her research\, each artist in the exhibition will present new and existing work. \nBirmingham-based artist Shaheen Ahmed uses maps to reflect narratives of statelessness and disparagement. Her work is layered with a multitude of craft processes and motifs\, including calligraphy and Islamic geometry. She wore a blindfold while making them connect with the emotions and experiences of oppressed societies. \nEast Sussex-based artist Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, known for her provocative textile works that challenge preconceptions of knitting and crochet\, has created a knitted magazine cover – ‘We Mek Magazine’- full of symbolism with a central figure inspired by political activist Angela Davis and with her watch set to 9.25\, the time that George Floyd lost his life to police brutality. \nBritish-Sudanese textile artist Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings will present a new light installation. The work incorporates dyeing\, screen-printing\, and Devoré techniques to explore themes of identity\, communication\, heritage\, and womanhood. The artist is influenced by her Sudanese heritage\, which is reflected in her use of Arabic geometry\, colour\, and form. \nGhanaian-born silversmith Francisca Onumah has created three emotive and figurative vessels in her new work ‘In our sKin’ (2021) that reflect family\, relationships and historical images of Ghanaian people in everyday life. Their abstracted patterns are deconstructed from traditional Ghanaian motifs\, fabrics\, and crafted objects. Instead\, marks and textures are repeatedly hammered into sheet metal to mirror and resemble the patterns found in textiles and fabrics. \nLondon-based artist Onome Otite has created a new textile work inspired by the support network between women\, the group of figures in her piece are based on close friends of hers that have inspired her. She has also intentionally chosen five figures to mirror the relevance of the five women taking part in the We Gather exhibition. She has hand-stitched loose-folded fabrics across her hand-drawn statistics\, which each of her subjects has donated. \nAt the centre of the exhibition is a gathering space. Material from the commissioning artists will be displayed alongside other pioneering female makers whose work celebrates craft within everyday contexts. Among these will be works by artists Jasleen Kaur and Magdalene Odundo DBE from the Crafts Council Collection. We Gather is a site for learning and reflection\, with books\, reports and images encouraging visitors to discuss visibility\, cultural traditions\, and the value of women’s contribution to craft within everyday contexts. \nThe exhibition also features a selection of objects and portraits of female artisans from The Black Artisans\, a photographic project by Jo Sealy that celebrates Black artisans in traditional sectors of UK heritage crafts and gives visibility to doing practices derived from African and Caribbean cultural heritage\, including steel pan making and calabash art. \nThe exhibition graphic design is by Rose Nordin\, co-founder of OOMK (One of My Kind).

SUMMARY:'Siluetas'\, Joachim Lambrechts - Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:12 November – 18 December 2021\nKristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, 2 Melior Place\, Bermondsey \nPrivate View: Thursday 11 November\, from 6:30 – 9 pm \nA skull smoking a cigarette\, an oversized duck laying an egg\, and a smiling butterfly. These are the eccentric visions of Belgian artist Joachim Lambrechts who plays with composition and form to evoke a sense of childlike joy and spontaneity. While the artist typically employs a vibrant colour palette\, his latest solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, London\, entitled Siluetas\, presents a bold new series of textural\, monochromatic works\, marking newfound confidence and aesthetic purity. \n \n  \n  \nLambrechts’ practice embraces and celebrates free creative expression. He never plans his compositions\, instead preferring to allow the image to reveal itself through the act of mark-making. Although this new series of black and white paintings express a certain restraint\, the images retain a powerful sense of dynamism which reflects the artist’s spontaneous process. With these works\, he began by pasting pieces of coloured paper onto the canvas to create a sense of texture and depth before applying layers of black paint. Broad brush strokes and lines of white colour were then used to delineate the outlines of objects and animals so that from a distance\, they appear as silhouettes or shadows. At the same time\, closer inspection reveals flashes of colour breaking through the surface where the artist has scratched or scraped away the paint. This creates a palpable tension between mark-making and erasure\, movement and stillness\, artistic abandon and creative control.\nFor this latest body of work\, Lambrechts took inspiration from early cave paintings\, which convey complex narratives and emotions despite their simplistic style. Similarly\, the artist has deliberately restricted his lines to what is only necessary to obtain a particular shape or form. The painting Pantera Negra\, for example\, depicts a black cat (or panther) whose body mainly consists of a large black shape with four vertical lines indicating the outlines of its front legs. As with all artworks\, Lambrechts’ signature graphical style simultaneously clarifies and distorts our understanding of the image. The cat’s shape appears both childlike and surreal\, just as in the painting Pegasus\, we can immediately identify the mythical horse while viewing the creature from a seemingly impossible perspective. All four of its legs appear along the same line\, bent and twisted into unnatural angles. “For me\, painting is not so much wanting to convey a message\, but rather a search for shapes\, lines and colour and seeing what possibilities they offer me\,” explains Lambrechts. At the same time\, this approach invites the viewer to engage more creatively as we are given greater freedom to interpret the compositions. \nWith some of the works\, the artist guides or destabilises our interpretation by incorporating text into the image. The words sometimes act as direct visual labels\, such as Black Eagle or Lions\, while others appear as witty modern-day aphorisms. The painting When the owl wakes up at night to kill\, we sleep\, for example\, depicts an owl seemingly in a kind of trance state\, its eyes filled with white circles and its wings extended while the text forms a literal frame or border around the edge of the canvas. In this way\, Lambrechts questions his role as an image-maker by demonstrating how our understanding of artwork is shaped by the composition itself and its framing and external contexts such as titles\, accompanying text\, and the surroundings in which the work appears. At the same time\, however\, he draws us closer to the image by inviting us to engage more actively and intimately with the artistic process.\nThese complex embedded layers of tension and bold visual contrasts are what make the artworks so compelling. By the very nature of paint\, they are static scenes while simultaneously bursting with raw\, exuberant creativity. \n  \n \n  \nAbout Joachim Lambrechts\nJoachim Lambrechts (born in 1986) is a renowned urban artist from Antwerp\, Belgium. In 2001 he began his studies at an art school in Antwerp. Later he got very involved with the graffiti and street art scene in his home city\, and in 2004 he distanced himself from his academic education and left art school without graduating. In the years that followed\, Joachim spent a lot of time experimenting with various approaches to graffiti and became quickly integrated into the Belgian street art scene. Since 2010\, painting on canvas has been Joachim’s primary focus and creating street art across Europe. \nIn contrast to his murals\, Joachim never makes preliminary studies or sketches when he starts working on a canvas. Yet\, paradoxically\, he feels more accessible within the four walls of his studio\, which is reflected in his paintings. They result from a more spontaneous process\, and as such\, possess a sense of urgency and innocence.

SUMMARY:Soho Christmas Lights 2021
DESCRIPTION:The Soho Christmas lights have a strong community focussed theme this year – 21 luminescent installations have been designed by children from Soho Parish School under the direction of architect and RIBA Architecture Ambassador Antonio Capelao\, with the support of Hannah Peaty\, art lead at Soho Parish School alongside Joao Rocha of Storm Flowers London. \nLighting up Soho’s streets from 8th November\, the panels have all been designed by a selection of the school’s current pupils under the supervision of architect Capelao and brought to reality by Blachere Illumination UK. The festive designs range from snowmen\, baubles and reindeer to once again bring back the magic of Christmas. The lights are heartwarming installations and represent what it is like to experience Christmas through a child’s eyes.

SUMMARY:The Way Through The Forest | Punam Singh | 2nd – 13th November 2021
DESCRIPTION:Punam is inspired by the ever-changing and evolving nature of gardens and forests. Her abstract artwork is influenced by the landscapes\, forests and grasslands of Assam and England. In her first solo exhibition\, Punam’s abstract paintings explore the spiritual qualities of woods\, inspired by the power of nature and trees to create mindfulness and reduce stress. \nThe artist spent much of her early life immersed in the forest environment. The cycles of transformation\, growth and her memories of the wilderness are reflected in the textures of her work. \nFor her\, forests are a place of mystery and discovery\, representing resilience\, transition and change. \nThese qualities\, rediscovered during lockdown walks through London’s ancient woodland\, have been a source of strength\, healing and inspiration during the pandemic. \nThis exhibition shares some of the work created during this period\, emanating the meditative emotions often felt when dwelling amidst the trees. \nPunam works using acrylics\, pigments and gouache. She uses canvases as well as wood\, bamboo and casement cloth to paint on. The layers and textures in her paintings are influenced by what she saw in the forests as a child. She uses concrete and plaster to create these effects. Her work is colourful\, reflecting the vibrancy of nature and life. \nThe Artist \nPunam was born in a tea garden in Assam\, India\, and grew up in the foothills of the Himalayas. She has lived in London since 2000. \nPunam gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Social Communications Media from the University of Bombay\, Sophia College. She worked for many years in the 1990s as an advertising film director. Punam is a self-taught artist\, and in recent years\, she has used her artistic practice to re-engage with her creative past. \nThis exhibition is dedicated to the memory of her beloved son Jai. A percentage of the proceeds from the show will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

SUMMARY:Dor Beetles Slumbering at Dusk - Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Private View: Saturday 16th of October from 12-6 pm \nLondon (Wandsworth) \nTall stems of flowers\, grass and reeds tower against the sky as soft sunlight streams through their leaves. Norwegian artist Vibeke Slyngstad’s exquisitely rendered paintings take the perspective of a small child playing in the earth\, running through fields\, wading through streams\, squinting into the sun. However\, these are not works of nostalgia; the beauty Slyngstad depicts is fragile and wavering just as the landscapes themselves are transitional\, caught between the rural and the urban\, the land and the sea. Instead\, Dor Beetles Slumbering at Dusk\, the artist’s solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery London\, takes these rugged\, mysterious edgelands as a way of exploring complex psychological states. \nSlyngstad works at a slow\, meditative pace\, precisely rendering each image using a single layer of paint so that the finished surface has a delicate\, almost translucent quality\, reflecting more expansive notions of liminality. Although the compositions are inspired by the artist’s photographs of real-life encounters with nature\, the vivid hues and magnified perspective of the plants against a blank\, white sky suggest a heightened view or dreamlike state rather than any specific geographical location. Meanwhile\, Slyngstad’s plays with materiality to evoke a fluctuating sense of perception\, almost as if we are dipping in and out of consciousness. From a distance\, the exacting details\, blinding bursts of light and contrast between sharpened and blurred edges\, which mimic the flash and zoom of a camera\, create a stunning impression of photorealism. Still\, on closer inspection\, the artist’s presence becomes visible through delicate\, irregular brushstrokes and subtle imperfections where the colours bleed out of the lines or the paint streaks. “It is essential to me that the works have a humanity and honesty about them\,” says the artist. “The viewer can see every mark.” \nAt the same time\, the visible fragility of the work creates a slight air of tension or perhaps\, even anxiety. This is probably most keenly felt in the series of paintings entitled Shuafat\, named after a predominantly Palestinian neighbourhood in East Jerusalem. The artist encountered a sizeable vacant area of urban land\, overgrown with flowers and weeds breaking through the cracks in the concrete. Slyngstad was struck by the beauty and persistence of nature against a backdrop of conflict and hardship and continues to return the same imagery\, playing with the crop and scale to create fresh interpretations. In this exhibition\, the landscape is depicted at a large scale\, taking on an almost hyperrealism that heightens both a sense of drama and vitality. Meanwhile\, the artist deliberately chooses to work in a bright colour palette to convey a feeling of optimism that relates to notions of renewal and rebirth as enacted by the natural life cycle. Each painting offers a window into a microcosmic world that captures the harmonious relationship between deterioration (the drooping white petals of the daisies) and growth (the lush green foliage)\, whilst the works’ materiality the intensity of detail creates an odd\, pervading sense of unease. \nThese ideas are further explored in the series Sønstegård\, named after an area of protected wetlands in Norway close to Oslo\, where the artist is based. These paintings depict a sparser landscape of reeds and grass growing on the banks of a body of water. Rendered in dark tones of purple\, pink and red\, they evoke the cusp of nightfall\, once again playing with notions of transition and perhaps\, reflecting the experience of memory as a wavering psychological place that’s continually in the process of fading. Like the landscape of Shuafat\, we find ourselves simultaneously drawn in by the beauty and held at a taut distance. \nThe exhibition’s title reflects this layered perceptual experience by evoking the poetic image of a beetle slumbering in the undergrowth\, caught between a state of sleep and wakefulness as the day transitions into the night. Although the beetle is not depicted in any of the paintings\, we can perhaps read it as a metaphor for ourselves\, the viewers\, drawn deep into Slyngstad’s vivid\, intricate worlds.

The project invites artists\, Anna Engelhardt and Bahar\nNoorizadeh\, to share questions and insights around the deep interdependence of the digital world\nwith our material one\, namely by exploring digital platforms\, websites\, infrastructures and networks. \nThrough their respective (art)works – Circuits of Truths (C.T) by Engelhardt and Weird Economies\n(W.E)\, a project initiated by Noorizadeh – this presentation will consider the back-end infrastructure of\ndigital platforms as a set of ambiguous relations rather than cables\, wires\, and servers. The exhibition\ncautiously approaches how we relate to and navigate the cyber domain as space. Drawing from the\nspectrum that ranges from public to private physical spaces. \nThe Green Room presents cyberspace as a part of such a continuum. The exhibition unleashes the\ncontent\, architecture\, networks\, and infrastructures of the two works through an online and physical\nspace. It seeks to propose how to think through\, create and re-appropriate other modes of relating\,\ngovernance\, knowledge\, verification and ownership through these tools. \nConceived as a hybrid back-end space\, C.T AND W.E come together through spatial interventions as\nwell as a public programme\, comprising conversations and workshops. W.E and C.T meet at three\ncentral nodes that will guide spatial and conceptual engagement: ownership\, verification and\nsurveillance. \nAs an online platform and think-tank prioritizing artistic strategies that trace economic imaginaries\ndespite current financial arrangements and systems\, Weird Economies (www.weirdeconomies.org)\nself-reflectively questions and deliberates the platform’s code of ethics\, and mode of ownership and\ngovernance. It also aims to recuperate the increasingly extractive\, privatized and hegemonized\ncondition of a digital platform in order to create a common one that is able to scale up and down\neffectively when needed. During the exhibition period\, W.E gathers ‘stakeholders’ to share and\ndiscuss values\, goals and strategies to create a common space for the research and practice of\nalternative economies. At a time when art institutions are increasingly relying on digital content\, how\ncan we understand ownership of this content and its circulation? What forms of collective\nparticipation\, decision-making\, autonomy\, accountability and cooperation among members working\nacross geographies might mean today or what could it look like? What can this hybridity of our being\nand relations open up to in building the tools\, networks\, economies and infrastructures that we need. \nThrough Circuits of Truth\, Engelhardt scrutinises the notions of authenticity and fake\, foundational\nfor our digital realm. The website (https://machinic.info) offers insight into and tools to reconsider our\nrelationship to the complex paradoxes of truth production. Introducing users to the various steps the\ncontent goes through to become ‘true’ reveals the digital assembly line that manufactures\nauthenticity. Engelhardt allows choosing the level and mode of engagement with the infrastructure\nshe investigates. The networks she highlights span from tracking devices that spread fake news to\ncyber weapons that engage verified accounts. Through her intervention in The Green Room\, she\nforces us to confront our own digital autonomy or lack thereof. What is the role of seemingly menial\nvisual signifiers like blue verification ticks and authentication requests on the internet? How can we\nexit the closed verification bubbles reliant on binaries of ‘true’ and ‘fake’? Where do we start looking\nto reverse engineer these various mechanisms of “truth” production? \nThe public programme for The Green Room looks at broader questions of digital infrastructures to\naddress the central nodes of the project. Interviewed by Engelhardt\, Emily Rosamond\, lecturer in\nVisual Cultures at Goldsmiths University\, will talk about reputational warfare and algorithmic rating.\nJared Davis\, Associate Editor of AQNB and co-host of the editorial platform’s Artist Statement\npodcast\, will convene a workshop on digital ownership and cooperation. Finally\, W.E will host a closed\nassembly that will draw and connect desired\, practical and imagined values\, goals and strategies to\ncreating a digital commons based on shared interest in alternative economies; the results of this\nmapping will be installed in space following the workshop. \nThe Green Room scratches at questions around the relationship between digital infrastructures and\nmaterial worlds\, understanding it as a continuum from one realm to another rather than their current\ncommon binary dispossession. What can this understanding support and what does it reveal? In what\nhas become an inevitable search\, we seek to locate public space in relation to private digital worlds\nand vice versa and are left constantly with the question; What can these technologies open up anew\nin our current conditions\, be it as a new language\, constellation of relations\, or an opportunity to\nexplore and instrumentalize that which lies within the gaps and leaks of these intersecting worlds. \nAnna Engelhardt is a Russian media artist and writer whose research-based practice explores post-\nSoviet infrastructures as a form of politics. Comprising texts\, videos\, websites\, and digital platforms\,\nher investigations take on multiple forms of media and distribution as they develop over time. Her\nproject Circuits of Truth (2021) explores cyberwar from the perspective of user verification\, and was\ncommissioned by GARAGE Museum of Contemporary Art\, Moscow. Produced using deepfake\ntechnology\, her video essay Adversarial Infrastructure (2020) investigates the colonial violence of\nthe Russian Crimean Bridge\, and was shown at Ars Electronica\, 67th International Short Film Festival\nOberhausen\, Vancouver International Film Festival and Kyiv Biennial. Anna’s writings have been\npublished in Mute Magazine\, Strelka Magazine\, Journal of Visual Culture\, and the European Review. \nBahar Noorizadeh is a filmmaker\, writer\, and platform designer. She works on the reformulation of\nhegemonic time narratives as they collapse in the face of speculation: philosophical\, financial\, legal\,\nfutural\, etc. Noorizadeh is the founder of Weird Economies\, an online art platform that traces\neconomic imaginaries extraordinary to financial arrangements of our time. Her work has appeared at\nthe German Pavilion\, Venice Architecture Biennial 2021\, Tate Modern Artists’ Cinema Program\,\nTransmediale Festival\, DIS Art platform\, Berlinale Forum Expanded\, and Geneva Biennale of Moving\nImages among others. She is pursuing her work as a PhD candidate in Art at Goldsmiths\, University\nof London where she holds a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship. \nReem Shadid is a curator\, researcher and cultural organizer who works on the emancipatory\npossibilities within artistic practice\, exploring the ways it intersects with ecological\, political and\nsocio-economic forms. She is the producer and host of Radio Alhara’s show Listening with Reem\nShadid; monthly listening sessions with artists\, researchers and curators working at the intersection\nof sonic\, visual and literary productions. She is also a contributing editor at Infrasonica\, a digital\nplatform of non-western cultures. Previously\, she was the Deputy Director of Sharjah Art Foundation\,\nwhere she served in various capacities\, focusing mainly on organising and producing the Sharjah\nBiennial between 2006-2020.

SUMMARY:Mind The ‘Green Gap’: Houseplant Hideout Opens In East London To Combat Nature Deficit
DESCRIPTION:Thejoyofplants.co.uk today announces the opening of a ‘Houseplant Hideout’ in East London’s urban jungle\, Shoreditch’s BoxPark. Designed to banish autumn blues for the 48% of Brits who say they are dreading winter this year and to help bring nature into homes and home office spaces these cold seasons\, the Houseplant Hideout is ultimately designed to transport consumers to a biophilic wonderland of Zen. \nWith half (52%) confessing that nature is the top thing they’ve missed during the lockdown in recent research commissioned by Thejoyofplants.co.uk\, the houseplant experts have set about bringing a rich\, rejuvenating biophilic dreamworld to the heart of the concrete jungle. By placing over 300 houseplants into a handcrafted 10m installation\, with rotating chairs\, soft lighting and a mindfulness audio meditation crafted by plant spirit expert Holly Worton\, the Houseplant Hideout is set to transport visitors to another world. \nOpen to the public from the 7th of October at 10 am\, ‘Houseplant Hideout’ invites individuals to get lost – Alice in Wonderland style – in a lush green forest bathing immersion where the magical power of houseplants stimulates every sense. Upon stepping inside this tranquil oasis\, visitors will be transported into an interactive biophilic wonderland complete with a six-metre vertical kaleidoscope to be fully engulfed in nature and give them a magical moment for the gram. With terrariums portals to peek through from the outside to a lush moss flooring\, this event is designed to show how easy it is to bring the natural landscape into the interior landscape – just in time for winter. \nThejoyofplants.co.uk has collaborated with award-winning designer and architect DaeWha Kang to create the hideout – a monolithic landmark bringing biophilic principles to life with a unique space for people to retreat\, reflect and recharge – as part of their successful Thanks Plants campaign. With the safe space of our homes overtaken by work and more than ever\, we need quietude\, shelter\, and moments of beauty and tranquillity brought back into our home working spaces to avoid a nature deficit. \nRenowned botanist James Wong has carefully curated the houseplants inside\, selecting varieties for their wellbeing and biophilic benefits\, such as Strelitzia Nicolai’s that help take in CO2 and harmful toxins and release oxygen to plants and terrariums that help boost concentration whilst working from our home offices. \nPlant spirit expert Holly Worton has crafted a special plant meditation visitors can try out during their time in the installation and also listen at home to relax\, or on their lunch break via a link supplied on their visit. Talking to plants has long been proven to help them grow\, but Holly takes this one step further. Creating a meditation that reinforces our connection to plants by assisting consumers to get into a relaxed state helps us reach states of consciousness that allow for communication beyond humans. \nOpen to the public for free from 7th October to 9th October 2021 located at The Green in BOXPARK Shoreditch. Consumers will be allowed to book an individual session lasting 10 or 15 minutes here. The hideout is also designed with passers-by and houseplant enthusiasts in mind who can still enjoy the installation by peeking through the numerous portals and spotting our hand-made terrariums by James Wong\, discover magical houseplant scenes and capture inspiration and photography of this shrine to the wonder of houseplants.

DESCRIPTION:Ceramics Workshop\nCreate your own Shisa Guardian Lion statuette while sipping on a unique cocktail in this workshop led by ceramicist Akiko Matsuda.\nShisa are found all over the islands of Okinawa\, Japan’s southernmost prefecture and a beautiful subtropical archipelago. SUMMARY:Islington Festival Art Workshop - Abstract Drawing Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky & Live Music
DESCRIPTION:“Colour is the key. The eye is the hammer. The soul is the piano with its many chords.” The paintings of Wassily Kandinsky will serve as a starting point for an expressive workshop with a focus on generating ideas that will transform sound into an image. Demonstrations and instruction will guide artists towards understanding how a musical performance can be represented pictorially. \nYou will be drawing in direct response to music played by an ensemble creatively and intuitively. The class will include lessons in basic colour theory\, mark-making and tonal contrast. By the end of the workshop\, you will produce a series of captivating colour drawings informed by your individual response to rhythm and music. \nArt Workshop – Abstract Drawing Inspired by Wassily Kandinsky & Live Music
