SUMMARY:Mendoza Mania -Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Come and join our exciting Immersive Exhibition Day on September 18th to celebrate the life of local boxing legend Daniel Mendoza. \n\n\n\nThe immersive event in Paradise Gardens is a community-focused celebration of the life and times of Portuguese Jewish bare-knuckle boxer Daniel Mendoza (1764-1836)\, who helped make the sport what it is today and was the first true sporting celebrity in Britain. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition is a way to engage the wider community in the histories of boxing and the Jewish connection to the East End dating back to Mendoza’s time and to explore how community members from a wide range of backgrounds are today “fighting back” against racism\, discrimination and other challenges they encounter. \n\n\n\nQR codes placed on trees in Paradise Gardens will connect to a site where visitors can listen to extracts from Mendoza’s memoirs and oral histories of local people whose experiences relate closely to Mendoza’s. \n\n\n\nThere will also be workshops happening between 12 pm-4 pm which will be family-friendly\, celebrate Daniel Mendoza and include poetry\, readings\, art and craft! \n\n\n\nAll these events are accessible\, family-friendly\, and open to all. You’ll be sent a fill programme closer to the day when you sign up. \n\n\n\nYou can come along for as long or as little time as you like. \n\n\n\nIf you have any questions about the event or access\, email stuart@stmargaretshouse.org.uk \n\n\n\nMendoza Mania is a project supported by the National Heritage Lottery Fund.

SUMMARY:Who Tells Whom About What
DESCRIPTION:Czech Republic’s leading artists and illustrators David Böhm & Jiří Franta\, whose distinctive work bounces off their shared sense of humour and social awareness\, challenge our understanding of community and the indivisibility of the current world in the duo’s first UK show. \n\n\n\nUsing imaginary city models with staged micro stories\, the artists draw on current social and political issues to explore the city not only as a place of neighbourhood and coexistence but also as a crowded and fragmented world\, in which it is necessary to reconsider some of the basic ideas. Does the concept of nations still make sense? Wouldn’t it be possible to organise the planet better? Who sustains whom? And can we find a way to stop living at the expense of future generations? Inspired by the exquisitely staged narrative paintings\, familiar from the work of artists such as Pieter Brueghel\, the artists’ own tableaux will be displayed as a large scale photo series in an outdoor exhibition on the fence of the Czech Embassy in London on busy Bayswater Road\, while the models themselves will be exhibited in the gallery inside. Exploring the ‘fence’ motif Böhm & Franta link the outdoor exhibition with the indoor one while referring to relations with our neighbours and borders beyond which we are not welcome\, raising the question of who the ‘outsider’ really is. \n\n\n\nPRIVATE VIEW: Wednesday 22 June 2022\, 6.30 – 9 pmFree entry\, registration necessary via https://bit.ly/WhoTellsWhomAboutWhat_opening \n\n\n\nVitrínka Gallery\, Czech Centre London / 30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London\, W8 4QY / Tue – Fri\, 10 am – 5 pm \n\n\n\nOutdoor exhibition on the fence of the Czech Embassy / 26 – 30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London W8 4QY / Free access 24/7 \n\n\n\nAbout the Artists: David Böhm and Jiří Franta\, an artistic duo since 2006\, explore in their work the relation between drawing\, performance and conceptual art. Known for drawing and painting on walls in galleries as well as in public spaces\, Böhm and Franta present their distinctive perception of the world – their views on society\, politics\, the art scene\, and mass media as well as their own feelings. In their “illustrations\,” they often play with multiple meaning and irony\, commenting on the life of the human community. They were finalists for the Jindřich Chalupecký Award\, the top Czech award for visual artists up to the age of 35\, in 2009\, 2010 and 2012 and have received multiple awards for their books\, the most recent one being the Illustrator of the Year Award at the Czech Grand Designs 2022 for their book City for Everyone; A Manual of Urbanism for Beginners. \n\n\n\nOrganised by the Czech Centre London and LUSTR Festival of Illustration\, Prague.LUSTR is a festival of contemporary illustration and the largest illustration exhibition in the Czech Republic. \n\n\n\nSupported by the Embassy of the Czech Republic in London \n\n\n\nIn collaboration with the Kensington + Chelsea Art Week and the London Festival of Architecture. Part of the Czech Centre London programme marking the Czech Republic’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

SUMMARY:YueWuFu Rhythm of Chinese Music and Dance 10-Year Anniversary Performance
DESCRIPTION:Goldsmiths Confucius Institute for Dance and Performance are proud to present\, Yue Wu Fu Rhythm of Music and Dance\, an eye-watering splendour of contemporary techniques and traditional Chinese music and dance in celebration of the department’s decennial anniversary. \n\n\n\nThe performance is set to be a mesmerising assault on the senses as it works to combine music\, dance and other art forms rooted in Chinese culture with rhythm and poetry as a guidance in order to portray the very essence of traditional culture. \n\n\n\nSince antiquity\, Chinese performance art has practiced the tradition of interweaving poetry\, dance and music together to create a profound sensorial\, aesthetic\, and reflective experience for the spectator. \n\n\n\nFor one night only\, acclaimed professional dancers\, musicians and vocalists from Goldsmiths Confucius Institute’s in-house professional performing arts troupe will impart an enthralling theatrical experience that will embody the beauty of Chinese classical works of art and theatrical practices – this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience not to be missed.

SUMMARY:HYPROV: Improv Under Hypnosis
DESCRIPTION:“Personally\, it’s the scariest thing I’ve ever done as a performer”\, explains world-renowned improv veteran Colin Mochrie of the hit show that has him so nervous. “I look into their dead eyes and wonder if it’s going to be a very long night. So far\, we’ve been fortunate.” \nMochrie isn’t describing his work for the past 30 years on the international TV phenomenon\, Whose Line Is It\, Anyway? He’s talking about one of the most original and talked about live experiences that he co-created with Master Hypnotist Asad Mecci\, HYPROV: Improv Under Hypnosis\, one UK theatre-goers will be able to witness for themselves this coming May. \nAfter welcoming volunteers on stage to be hypnotized and whittling it down to a handful of the most susceptible\, Mecci brings Mochrie out to improvise with them -while they are under hypnosis. \nA world-renowned hypnotist\, Mecci says “I’ve been hypnotizing people for 20 years\, and when I studied improv\, I had an epiphany: hypnosis could unlock the comedic genius in everyday people and turn them into pros. You never know which hypnotized subject will become the next star of the show. That’s what makes the show incredible\, ordinary people doing extraordinary things!” \n“Adding the element of hypnosis to improv allows people to let their guard down and have fun in a scene. They’re certainly the most interesting stage partners I’ve ever had!” notes Mochrie. \nThey took the show on the road to Just for Laughs London\, Just for Laughs Montreal and the Edinburgh Fringe\, where it was received with rave reviews and sell-out audiences in 2016 and 2017. The duo set out on a 50-city tour in 2019 and performed across the U.S. and Canada before the pandemic caused them to postpone; now\, they are ramping back up with a UK Tour. \nNB: Those interested in participating in this interactive show must sign-up in advance through the venue and present proof of full vaccination and a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the showtime to participate on stage. Volunteers (must be age 18 or over) can refuse at any point to continue taking part in the performance.

SUMMARY:LGBTQ+ Printmaking
DESCRIPTION:Learn how to lino-print in a relaxed and friendly setting with an LGBTQ+ group \nAbout this event:\nAs part of the “Dive In” season at St Margaret’s House\, I’m excited to offer this LGBTQIA+ lino-printing workshop at The Create Place in Bethnal Green. \nOver the two hours we have together\, I’ll take you through the lino-printing process from start to finish. We’ll begin with a few warm-up drawing skills\, leading into some linocutting techniques and a demonstration on how to transfer your design onto a lino-block. During the second part of the workshop\, you’ll learn how to carve your design and finally how to make a print! \nPrices are on a pay what you can scale and will include all resources\, plus you’ll get to take your print and lino block home! \nI’m really looking forward to bringing a group of queer people together to learn a new creative skill. \nIf you have access requirements you would like me to know about before the workshop\, please email Gemma by March 30th at wildwaterartstore@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Nature Interrupted with Celina Teague
DESCRIPTION:Monstrous hybrid beings appear against acid skies and barren landscapes\, creating surreal\, otherworldly scenes that sit uncomfortably between nightmare and dream. Nature Interrupted\, Celina Teague’s fifth solo show at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, takes a deep dive into the dark underbelly of our planet’s biosphere\, where human detritus overcome animals and plants. They appear futuristic\, unwholesome\, and alarming. Still\, at the same time\, Teague’s vibrant colour palette commands presence: we are challenged not only to look but to face up to the reality of what we see. \nIn part\, Teague’s artistic practice is an expression of her guilt and responsibility about not only environmental issues but also political and humanitarian crises. She listens to the news and various podcasts as she paints\, allowing the information to filter through onto the canvas so that each composition possesses a raw sense of urgency. ‘I paint instinctively. It always involves risk\, which I find both liberating and frightening. If I painted on a different day or even at a different hour\, the result would be completely different\,’ she says. \nThe work Still I Rise\, for example\, was made when Teague was listening to reports of the conflict in Afghanistan and specifically about the oppression of women. However\, instead of focusing on the bleakness of the situation\, Teague’s perspective is one of hope\, vitality and strength. In the painting\, women dressed in blue burqas appear like flowers blooming at the end of tall lush vines\, the winding\, interconnected stems suggesting a sense of quiet solidarity. Interestingly\, this is the only work in which humanity and nature appear in harmony: the women are supported by the natural world rather than overwhelming it. However\, this relationship becomes skewed in the painting Swallowed. Here\, the women appear huddled together to form the centre of what looks like a pink flower\, but closer inspection reveals that the petals are\, in fact\, severed tongues. In this way\, the work becomes a powerful visual metaphor for how censorship is used as a form of oppression and entrapment. \nAlthough the other works reflect more broadly on the climate crisis\, the notion of mutilation runs throughout the exhibition. In one of the more surreal compositions\, a giant straw pierces through the centre of a flamingo’s body\, which is itself\, assembled from pink\, fleshy human limbs and organs. A mass of breasts and udders replace its feathers while its foot is a claw-like human hand. The strange yellow glow of the sky suggests a sickness or toxicity\, and an egg lies fried on the cracked\, dry ground as if baked in the sun. Like all of Teague’s works\, the bright colour palette is somewhat misleading: we’re unsure whether to laugh or gasp. Is this a horror or a comedy? \nThis deliberate ambiguity creates a strong sense of unease that reflects both the subject matter and Teague’s approach to image-making. ‘My work is sometimes labelled as activist art\, which I find uncomfortable because painting about these issues doesn’t feel like enough\,’ she says. ‘We have all the facts easily accessible to us\, but we still just sit back and watch what’s happening most of the time.’ Teague returns to this notion of ‘armchair activism’ in each of her exhibitions by painting an image of an armchair\, often encompassing elements from the other works to create a sense of unity while also highlighting the irony of her role as an artist. However\, it would be amiss to ignore the power of the image. Teague’s paintings command our gaze and draw our attention to the politics of seeing. Confronted by these strange\, unsettling scenes\, we can deny neither awareness nor responsibility.

SUMMARY:ROSL Art Talk: Muse by Ruth Millington + Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Making of Muse \nMeet Editor Mireille Harper\, Illustrator Dina Razin and Author Ruth Millington as they discuss the story behind Muse (2022\, Vintage Publishing). From selecting the muses to illustrating each of them\, discover how Muse collaborated from start to finish. \nThe perception of the muse is that of a passive\, powerless model\, at the mercy of an influential and older artist. But is this trope a romanticised myth? Far from posing silently\, muses have brought emotional support\, intellectual energy\, career-changing creativity and practical help to artists. \nMuse tells the true stories of the incredible muses who have inspired art history’s masterpieces. From Leonardo da Vinci’s studio to the covers of Vogue\, art historian\, critic\, and writer Ruth Millington uncovers the remarkable role of muses in some of art history’s most well-known and significant works. Delving into the real-life relationships that models have held with the artists who immortalised them\, it will expose the influential and active part they have played and deconstruct reductive stereotypes\, reframing the muse as a momentous and empowered agent of art history. \nThis event is in partnership with Square Peg and Vintage Publishing. \nPreorder a copy of Muse (10% off RRP\, £14.99) signed by the author Ruth Millington and illustrator Dina Razin when you buy your event + book ticket – this can be collected upon arrival. \nImage Credit 1: Muse (2022\, Vintage Publishing) book cover illustration by Dina Razin \nThis event is hosted as part of ROSL ARTS Muse series:\nMuse: The Exhibition\, in partnership with Square Peg\, Vintage Publishing and Sotheby’s Institute of Art\nMuse by Ruth Millington is published by Vintage Publishing (07/04/22)
