As each section blends into the next and layers of imaginary florals cover the dreamlike landscape\, Thompson takes us on a visual journey that merges ancient folklore with hopes for the future. \n  \nInitially approaching flora and fauna\, and exotic plants in particular\, with scientific curiosity\, Thompson’s art is guided by intuition and an interest in the less tangible qualities\, expressing her love for nature. Lives We Cannot Live reveals the hidden reality of living with the condition. \nCurated by Sebah Chaudhry and supported by the ME Association\, the exhibition sets out to bring visibility to a hidden and neglected community and encompasses environmental portraits\, collaged with diary notes and personal memories of before being ill\, selected from more than 50 cases. \nDiagnosed with ME as a teenager\, Jeffs shares the lived experiences of his sitters and captures an intimate side of life rarely witnessed even by close friends. Hidden symptoms mixed with a general lack of awareness make this a doubly invisible and isolating disease. \n“I started this project out of frustration and anger because in the almost four decades since my diagnosis nothing has really changed. We still don’t know much about ME\, there’s still a lack of proper funding for research\, no clear treatment\, and worse\, there’s still widespread misunderstanding about the illness\, even among some healthcare professionals.” \nAround 400\,000 people in the UK have this debilitating and as yet incurable illness. Symptoms include profound fatigue\, sleep disturbance\, post-exertional malaise\, cognitive difficulties and a range of other symptoms like pain\, headaches\, nausea and intolerance to lights and noise. \nLives We Cannot Live is the first large scale project to focus on ME and precedes the publication of a photo book with Fistful of Books later this year. Born from human empathy rather than political drive\, her work questions the hierarchies that place humans above other life forms. \nIn paintings inspired by Eastern miniature art\, natural forces intermingle with crowds of abstract shapes and figures to represent the movements of people and cultures between past and present. Collaged paper boats folded from world maps symbolise the shared humanity of precarious passages too often reduced to numbers in news headlines. \nThe ubiquitous origami vessels also feature in a large-scale multi-media installation at the heart of the exhibition. These were co-created in workshops with diverse community groups. Participants christened each boat with a personal message of hope\, inspiring the exhibition title. A soundscape by Grammy-winning jazz saxophonist Tim Garland complements this collaborative work. \nThe artists have worked together since 2023\, when Garland commissioned Gokcen to create paintings for his orchestral work. Visuals for the current Moment of Departure tour constitute part of this exhibition. Tim Garland will play a selection from his current CD in several intimate concerts on both Saturdays. The afternoon performances will be followed by a Q&A with both artists who believe art can communicate positive messages and elevate the resilience of the human spirit. You don’t need to sew a palm tree if you don’t want to! \nParticipants are invited to sit together\, sew by hand\, talk\, listen\, share stories\, or simply observe. Some may choose to sew palm trees\, while others may work on repairs\, small tests\, or nothing at all. Conversation\, silence\, and informal knowledge-sharing are all part of the process\, as the work develops slowly and collectively over the session. \nThe workshop is led by artist Elle Reynolds\, whose practice works through collaborative processes\, storytelling\, and material experimentation. Her work explores making as a way of thinking together\, with a particular interest in shared authorship\, provisional forms\, and the social life of materials. \nParticipants will experience sewing as a social and conversational practice\, build confidence working with their hands in a low-pressure environment\, and contribute to a shared\, provisional body of work. Bringing together documentary work from a collaborative project in Tiszavasvári\, Hungary\, and artistic reflections by London-based Roma artist Robert Czibi\, the exhibition traces connections between place\, memory\, and belonging. Through images\, stories\, and personal perspectives\, Roma Routes invites audiences to reflect on how identity is shaped between the places we come from and the places we continue to become. \nThis exhibition brings together two intertwined narratives: the story of a segregated Roma community in Tiszavasvári\, and that of an artist born in another Roma neighbourhood in the same region who has carried its memory across borders. \nThe first story is that of collaboration: stepping across internal borders between the countryside and the Hungarian capital\, Budapest\, to involve participants from the Roma neighbourhood of a small town in the North-East of Hungary in a collaborative writing project with local non-Roma residents through the publication of the periodical Duj Dzséne – Ketten – Two Together. \nThe second story is of the artist\, Robert Czibi who crossed internal borders of identity and the physical borders of countries on many occasions before finding his expressive voice in the multiplicity of London’s lingua-culture. The simultaneity of identity as rootedness in Roma origins and identity as motion and interaction with our surroundings is what unites the two narratives that unfold in the images exhibited together. \n\nThe Road Ahead\nDocumentary and Photography Projects from Hungary – Film and photography \nThis photo exhibition was created in collaboration between photojournalist Márton Kállai\, multiple-winner of the Hungarian Press Photo Competition\, and the Tiszavasvári Roma Girls’ Youth Club\, on the initiative of the KRE Linguistic Diversity and Social Participation research group at Károli Gáspár University in Budapest. Together\, Roma and non-Roma participants from Tiszavasvári and Budapest write and publish the journal Duj Dzséne – Ketten – Two Together\, creating a narrative of trust and belonging about Roma futures and the coexistence of Roma and non-Roma in Hungary. The documentary film Duj Dzséne – Ketten – Two Together: Stories of a collaborative journal in support of Roma social participation showcases stages from their journey together: how they forged a collaborative writing and research collective across the borders of identity that separate people living alongside each other. \n\n\nThere I Was Born\, Here I Become\nContemporary Art \nRobert Czibi’s artistic response unfolds as a parallel journey alongside the documentary and the photos.
