DESCRIPTION:With her sculptures\, Annie Trevorah conjures an alien species defined by adaptive features that safeguard survival in a precarious future. Her part-human/part-plant hybrids have stood their ground in galleries\, parks and gardens. Plant Power marks their propagation into the hustle and bustle of an office environment. \nShowcasing twelve works\, including a painting\, to introduce a new body of work dedicated to the maritime realm\, groups of sensual cyborgs and symbiotic totems are huddled in opposite corners\, exchanging water cooler stories under the watchful gaze of their mutant supervisors\, whose predatory and fallible characteristics serve as reminders of the effects of climate change on all life forms. \nUsing organic and synthetic materials to intriguing monuments to human-plant interconnectivity\, Trevorah merges eco-feminist theory with subtle humour to encourage reflection and reassurance. \nPlant Power is located a short walk from Hammersmith station. The exhibition is open 24/7 and open to visitors between 10am and 6pm Monday through Friday.

DESCRIPTION:Ringing in the season of cracker crowns\, colourful balloons\, and party favours\, the sculptures in Doireann Gillan’s solo exhibition resemble symbols of joy and excitement as well as harbingers of loneliness and nostalgia. \n  \nSqueezed\, stretched and bent out of shape\, discarded industrial materials and soft spheres defy their prescribed functions as negative space and shadows compete with the objects they depend on. Oscillating between rage\, restraint and revelry\, their behaviour and appearance challenge historically gendered attributes. \n  \nGillan’s installations are metaphors for the tension between a desire for happiness and the collapse of the social structures necessary to meet this -for the unachievable aspirations in an era of heightened political and economic precarity. \n  \nThe Party’s Over is a playful provocation to take risks and bring about change.

DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the 50th anniversary of opening its house and gardens to the public\, Fulham Palace unveils ANANAS\, a monumental upside-down pineapple by London artist Annie Trevorah. \nThe visually striking sculpture is inspired by the historic pinery-vinery at Fulham Palace\, a rare example of a pineapple and grape greenhouse built by Bishop Howley during his residency at the palace in the early 19th century. \nTrevorah’s particular area of interest is human-plant inter-connectivity and intra-dependence. The main sculpture’s lattice design blends in with the blooms and architecture of the walled gardens while reflecting the episcopal coat of arms. Four totems celebrating the shared characteristics of vegetables and humans complement the display as they rise above the formal planting of the knot garden section. \nThe pineapple (Ananas comosus)\, a tropical plant indigenous to South America\, was first introduced to Europe in the 17th century and has fascinated plant enthusiasts and scientists\, architects and artists ever since. Its cultivation relied on the transatlantic trade in enslaved Africans. Initially an expression of power and wealth\, it has become a symbol of friendship and cultural exchange in modern times. \nThe unveiling coincides with the ongoing exhibition The Bishops of London\, colonialism and transatlantic slavery at Fulham Palace.

SUMMARY:Heart of Care - An Installation by Rosetta Life
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis visual arts exhibition is the culmination of a two-year project working with carers\, who are often excluded from cultural activities because of their responsibilities\, Heart of Care is an artwork made up of a series of images with a sound score that will be projected in three public spaces. The artwork will shine a light on the invisible role that carers play in families and communities\, and challenge the perceptions of care in an inclusive society. The images were inspired by the movement workshops and were developed into curated images\, and express the compassion displayed in the role of carer. The exhibition title reflects the positive outlook that defines her practice. \n\n\n\nStraddling sculpture and photography to balance an intuitive\, playful process within a structural framework\, the artist presents an ambiguous body of work that defies categorisation. Assemblage photo works will be shown alongside a series of sculptures constructed using materials sourced from the recent renovation of the gallery space itself. \n\n\n\nHaynes uses light and shadow to manipulate perspective and perception. Found objects and everyday materials are elevated to luxury items\, and precarious constructions are granted longevity in fine art photography\, introducing an element of drama and celebration to a fleeting moment. Our 12 looks include daily wear to wedding wear with exquisite hand embroideries and textiles. Most outfits take more than two years to make from weaving\, dyeing and embroidery\, all done by hand. We want to share these valuable but vanishing traditional costumes and handcrafts with you and celebrate their cultures during the Cultural Festival Week to help preserve them. Her performance will include beautiful Spring River Flower Moon Night and Mountain Stream renditions. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraditional Miao ethnic minority dance called Gold Pheasant by Hongqiuye Wei and Rong Zhao. \nHongqiuye Wei is a Chinese dance artist originally from southern China’s Bouyei minority ethnicity\, and Zhao Rong is a Chinese dance artist from Xi’an\, China. Hong specializes in folk dance\, which explores movement through her identity interconnected with multiple folk-dance traditions. Zhao Rong specialises in Chinese classical and contemporary dance\, and she explores the art of cross-cultural dance through her practical experience. Together they will perform the traditional Miao ethnic minority dance called Gold Pheasant. \n  \nContemporary dance performance by Yu-Chien Cheng inspired by Bai ethnic group‘s traditional Indigo stitch resist dyeing handcrafts \nBorn and raised in Taiwan\, Yu-Chien Cheng is a freelance contemporary dance artist in London\, UK. Yu-Chien started her dance training in Ballet\, contemporary\, and Chinese dance. She continues her training by joining VERVE 22\, where she performs works by Akram Khan\, Sita Ostheimer\, and Alesandra Seutin. The three pieces are toured nationally within the UK\, including The Place (London)\, Dance House (Cardiff)\, Dance City (Newcastle)\, and Riley Theatre (Leeds). \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCultural Style Week \nEstablished in May 2022\, The London-birthed Cultural Style Week movement is a visual celebration of cultural diversity. DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the bilingual publication of The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible\, Czech poet and architect Pavla Melková and leading British sculptor Antony Gormley meet on stage to continue an artistic dialogue that started six years ago in Prague when they first met\, and the idea of a joint book was born. In The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible Pavla\, Melková’s poetry meets Antony Gormley’s drawings\, circling the same centre and unfolding from the same horizon in their search for the essence of life\, to emerge in a common language. \n\n\n\nAntony Gormley’s images and a staged reading of Pavla Melková’s poems by translator and poet Joshua Mensch will accompany the launch of this bilingual edition. \n\n\n\nFollowed by audience Q&A and a book signing. \n\n\n\nPAVLA MELKOVÁ is a practising architect\, visual artist\, poet and writer who regularly lectures on art and architecture. Her widely-recognized architecture is visible throughout the Czech Republic\, where she has won numerous awards\, including Architect of the Year (2014)\, the Prague Mayor’s Prize (2012)\, and the National Prize for Architecture (2012). She has published seven books on architecture\, including most recently\, The Humanistic Role of Architecture (2016) and The Architecture of Reciprocity (2020). She is a regular contributor to professional architecture journals\, anthologies\, and collaborative works. Her two volumes of poetry include The Edges of the Day (2017) and Inner Time (2019). In 2012\, she founded the Office for Public Space at the Institute for Planning and Development of the City of Prague (IPR)\, which she headed until 2017. She is a member and vice-chair of the Gremial Council of IPR and is a partner at the architecture firm MCA atelier\, which she co-founded. In 2015\, she founded the course Concept and Interpretation at the Faculty of Architecture\, where she teaches. \n\n\n\nANTONY GORMLEY is widely acclaimed for his sculptures\, installations and public artworks investigating the human body’s relationship to space. His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human being stands about nature and the cosmos. Gormley continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours\, thoughts and feelings can arise. Gormley’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. A major solo exhibition of his work was presented at the Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, in September 2019. Permanent public works include the Angel of the North (Gateshead\, England)\, Another Place (Crosby Beach\, England)\, Inside Australia (Lake Ballard\, Western Australia)\, Exposure (Lelystad\, The Netherlands) and Chord (MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Cambridge\, MA\, USA). \n\n\n\nGormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994\, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999\, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007\, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. In 1997 he was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) and a knight in the New Year’s Honours list in 2014. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects\, an Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity and Jesus Colleges\, Cambridge. Gormley has been a Royal Academician since 2003. \n\n\n\nJOSHUA MENSCH is a poet and translator based in the Czech Republic. He is the author of Because. A Lyric Memoir (W. W. Norton\, 20218). He has served as an editor of B O D Y since 2012. \n\n\n\nThe Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible is a discourse between the languages of poetry and the visual arts. The book captures a dialogue between leading British sculptor Anthony Gormley and Czech poet Pavla Melková. The lines made by the words in the poems and lines of the drawings are traces that bring closer the shape of the essence – the essence of the world\, our lives\, relationships\, and situations. The strokes of the words of the poetry and the strokes of the lines of the drawings circle the same centre and unfold from the same horizon. When the marks cross paths\, the shape becomes more and more evident. Absorbed in the strokes and with developing awareness\, one mutual language emerges. For this series of sculptures\, titled New Movement\, Ahuva has chosen to explore how bronze can be used to convey the same malleability and flexibility of the human form. DESCRIPTION:Fluid\, sculptural forms evoke the wild\, tumultuous movement of the sea or else\, the uncanny stillness of a dense forest\, both creating veil-like surfaces which alternately obscure and reveal the figures caught between. These latest works by Richard Stone reflect on the artist’s spontaneous sculptural process in relation to the physical materiality of clay\, marble and bronze to explore wider perceived dichotomies between artistic conceit and authenticity\, strength and vulnerability\, resistance and surrender. Through deconstructed figures and sensual\, curvaceous shapes\, the knight divided\, the artist’s third solo exhibition with Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, considers art’s ability to not just challenge convention but to also present bold\, new visions for the future. \nFor Stone\, the creative process begins and ends with the material. He works with his hands\, allowing his thoughts and feelings to organically filter through his gestures until a shape or form begins to emerge. The works possess a compelling sense of rawness and intimacy that unsettles the historic monumentality of sculpture and invites the viewer to form a more embodied\, emotional connection to the work. The title of this latest exhibition refers to this process by personifying the notion of conflict. The knight – conventionally a masculine\, heroic figure – is deconstructed in Stone’s work\, appearing in brief glimpses of limbs that are then engulfed by swathes of coloured clay or marble. Still\, we can also understand the tumultuous scenes as visual representations of psychological states or rather\, transformation. \nThe show begins with the statue in the sea\, depicting a figure and horse descending or ascending from the depths. The piece is a continuation of Stone’s recent works in which he wrapped abstracted fabric rendered from clay around the body of found horse statues to subvert ideas of power and masculinity. Still\, here\, both figure and animal have been absorbed back into the material. Whether or not this is perceived as a process of destruction or renewal is left for the viewer to decide. At the same time\, however\, it’s hard not to view the work through the lens of ongoing contemporary debates around the value or purpose of public art. ‘It seems to have become a very binary discussion\, but what’s exciting is that we are now in a transitional space where we can actually talk about what we might want rather than what we do not like\,’ says Stone\, but inevitably\, it is also a space of uncertainty\, especially for a male sculptor. Stone plays with this idea by moving away from the elevated structure of a plinth to present\, instead\, a series of deeply framed tableaux\, which invite the viewer to perceive the work as image or painting as well as an object. The fluid and richly coloured forms appear to warp and dissipate before the eye\, disrupting our ability to ascertain\, and more crucially\, label what we see. \nThe piece entitled the bather\, after Duncan Grant’s 1911 painting Bathing\, plays further with our sense of perception as amorphous watery shapes\, create an impression of an undulating motion. As the surface seems to shift\, the viewer experiences an almost dizzying sensation that both confounds and liberates the gaze. Not all of the works are as abstract\, however. A smaller-scale piece entitled lo! lonely horse\, for example\, comprises a tiny porcelain horse – a found object – set adrift in ceramic waves. ‘I made this work deliberately small to negate the idea of monument and especially the traditional\, inflated masculine monument of the plinth and heroic ideal\, represented by increasingly questionable heroes\,’ comments Stone. ‘The biblical horses of the apocalypse\, traditionally associated with dominant masculinity\, are reduced to one\, the lone horse lost in a sea of unknowing.’ \nSimilarly\, where the knight appears in the works\, it is as a solitary figure\, lost between waves or amongst the intertwined branches of trees. For Stone\, like the ocean\, the forest represents a transitional space rather than a specific geographical location or environment. The trees are abstracted to thick\, muscular forms\, creating a stunning impression of density that contrasts the softer\, curvaceousness of the waves in the water-based works. Stone notes that he ‘wanted to draw on the idea of masculine and feminine energies but without setting them up as oppositional.’ Indeed\, although the works convey distinct atmospheres\, there is a strong visual relationship between the forms that create an impression of wholeness. This is perhaps most clearly expressed in a new bronze work entitled the ancient principle\, which reimagines the traditional sculptural figure of mother and child in the more ambiguous form of a trinity of birds. Once again\, the knight appears in glimpses as a softer\, more fluid presence that has an almost omniscient quality as ‘a universal protector rather than a symbol of archaic masculinity.’ \nIn the exhibition’s closing piece\, Icarus and the sea\, Stone draws on the Greek myth that Icarus flies too close to the sun\, paying no heed to his father’s warnings. As a result\, the wax of his makeshift wings melts\, and he plummets to his death. However\, in Stone’s sculptural retelling\, Icarus\, rather than drowning in the waves\, is reclaimed by the sea (traditionally a female energy)\, relating to the notion of wholeness and circularity while also turning the original narrative on its head by offering an alternative\, more uplifting perspective. \nAmidst the continued tumult and uncertainty of contemporary existence\, the knight divided invites us to seek solace in the creative potential of transitional periods – as a time of renewal and transformation.

SUMMARY:Nature Interrupted with Celina Teague
DESCRIPTION:Monstrous hybrid beings appear against acid skies and barren landscapes\, creating surreal\, otherworldly scenes that sit uncomfortably between nightmare and dream. Nature Interrupted\, Celina Teague’s fifth solo show at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, takes a deep dive into the dark underbelly of our planet’s biosphere\, where human detritus overcome animals and plants. They appear futuristic\, unwholesome\, and alarming. Still\, at the same time\, Teague’s vibrant colour palette commands presence: we are challenged not only to look but to face up to the reality of what we see. \nIn part\, Teague’s artistic practice is an expression of her guilt and responsibility about not only environmental issues but also political and humanitarian crises. She listens to the news and various podcasts as she paints\, allowing the information to filter through onto the canvas so that each composition possesses a raw sense of urgency. ‘I paint instinctively. It always involves risk\, which I find both liberating and frightening. If I painted on a different day or even at a different hour\, the result would be completely different\,’ she says. \nThe work Still I Rise\, for example\, was made when Teague was listening to reports of the conflict in Afghanistan and specifically about the oppression of women. However\, instead of focusing on the bleakness of the situation\, Teague’s perspective is one of hope\, vitality and strength. In the painting\, women dressed in blue burqas appear like flowers blooming at the end of tall lush vines\, the winding\, interconnected stems suggesting a sense of quiet solidarity. Interestingly\, this is the only work in which humanity and nature appear in harmony: the women are supported by the natural world rather than overwhelming it. However\, this relationship becomes skewed in the painting Swallowed. Here\, the women appear huddled together to form the centre of what looks like a pink flower\, but closer inspection reveals that the petals are\, in fact\, severed tongues. In this way\, the work becomes a powerful visual metaphor for how censorship is used as a form of oppression and entrapment. \nAlthough the other works reflect more broadly on the climate crisis\, the notion of mutilation runs throughout the exhibition. In one of the more surreal compositions\, a giant straw pierces through the centre of a flamingo’s body\, which is itself\, assembled from pink\, fleshy human limbs and organs. A mass of breasts and udders replace its feathers while its foot is a claw-like human hand. The strange yellow glow of the sky suggests a sickness or toxicity\, and an egg lies fried on the cracked\, dry ground as if baked in the sun. Like all of Teague’s works\, the bright colour palette is somewhat misleading: we’re unsure whether to laugh or gasp. Is this a horror or a comedy? \nThis deliberate ambiguity creates a strong sense of unease that reflects both the subject matter and Teague’s approach to image-making. ‘My work is sometimes labelled as activist art\, which I find uncomfortable because painting about these issues doesn’t feel like enough\,’ she says. ‘We have all the facts easily accessible to us\, but we still just sit back and watch what’s happening most of the time.’ Teague returns to this notion of ‘armchair activism’ in each of her exhibitions by painting an image of an armchair\, often encompassing elements from the other works to create a sense of unity while also highlighting the irony of her role as an artist. However\, it would be amiss to ignore the power of the image. Teague’s paintings command our gaze and draw our attention to the politics of seeing. Confronted by these strange\, unsettling scenes\, we can deny neither awareness nor responsibility.

SUMMARY:'Be A Part Of The Art' Collaborative Workshop With Artist In Residence Sam Wagner
DESCRIPTION:Join Artist in Residence Sam Wagner in creating a piece of artwork for his final show. As this residency focuses on Reemergence and New Norms\, Sam would like to hear what these themes mean to others. First\, participants will choose a shape and colour that best represents themselves and their personal experience. Then we will each write something they have learned about themselves over the past two years. Profiles and stories will remain anonymous to enable participants to be as truthful as possible about their experiences. Finally\, Sam will bring these shapes together to create a unified work of art that speaks to common themes and experiences expressed by participants. This collaborative piece will be displayed at the show opening on March 17th. \nSam Wagner is part of the ever-changing programme of artists in residence at Bankside Hotel’s maker’s studio. Bankside provides a permanent creative space and works with curators Contemporary Collective who champion up-and-coming creatives\, covering a wide range of disciplines including design\, painting\, sculpture\, film\, drawing\, printmaking\, installation\, new media and photography. Bankside and ArtYard Bar & Kitchen guests can watch artists practice their creative expertise and take on an informative and artistic journey.
