SUMMARY:Imagination Manifesto – Levent Oyluçtarhan
DESCRIPTION:Imagination Manifesto\, a solo presentation of works by Turkish artist Levent Oyluçtarhan\, invites the viewer into a world with continuously shifting shades\, textures\, and tones. Oyluçtarhan’s paintings brim with an amalgamation of forms and patterns that can be found only within the artist’s vision. \nOyluçtarhan’s work embodies a narrative in which imagination challenges objective values. People\, animals\, places and metamorphosed forms are hidden amongst colours and textures; at any one time these figures can inhabit earth\, sea or space – concurrently\, at times. His research is concerned with the way in which abstract patterns can coexist within concrete forms – thus posing the question: can objective values find a place within an imaginative reality? \nThe visuality of Oyluçtarhan’s paintings is reminiscent of Picasso’s work on the complexity of forms. The works in the exhibition that adopt a monochrome palette suggest a reference to the Cubists’ experiments with depth perception\, and working with the technique of grisaille. The series of works that make use of grisaille are distinguishable by their sole use of black and white. However\, in contrast to this minimal palette\, the rich figurative components of these works make use of distinctive textures and brushstrokes. The striped backgrounds found in the monochrome series are not only suggestive of flags and clothing patterns\, but allow the figures in the foreground to appear more voluminous. \nOyluçtarhan’s works in colour are awash with expressivity\, further emphasized by the undulating shades and tones\, from deep blues to glowing neon. According to Oyluçtarhan\, colour is a very effective tool with which to invoke emotion. The entanglement of bodies leads the viewer to consider the emotional compound of the paintings. Looking closely at the interlacement of the figures\, one encounters natural elements and metamorphosed forms such as flowers\, and the tails and horns of animals. \nThe combination of vivid neon colors\, disfigured human body parts and distorted facial expressions encourages the viewer to unravel the tangle of Oyluçtarhan’s fantasy world. These figures create their own movement across the composition; they exist within their own imaginative reality. \n”I see colour as a gateway to my world\, which I project onto the canvas. Then comes the tissues; then the forms I hide between the tissues. Once this is coupled with the imagination of the viewer\, the story begins. It makes sense to me that the viewer is involved in my paintings by looking at them with their own cultural background and unique imagination. \nI think every colour speaks to a different emotion. Considering the varying hues that inhabit my work\, we find ourselves adventuring through an unlimited narrative. In my paintings\, I add colours\, forms and textures. I’m creating deformations\, metamorphoses; I think it’s all a combination of riches. It is an example of how differences can coexist – it’s the harmony of multiple voices. \nArt is an adventure. Sometimes it’s full of surprises. In each of my paintings\, the viewer embarks on an endless journey. Every time you look at my work\, you see a different form\, a different shape. With my paintings\, I invite you to step away from the reality of the world and embark on a journey into the world of dreams”.\n– Levent Oyluçtarhan \nLevent Oyluçtarhan is a Turkish artist\, born in 1978. He lives and works in Eskişehir and Milas. In 2011\, Oyluçtarhan graduated from Anadolu University’s Faculty of Fine Arts in Eskişehir\, Turkey\, with a degree in Painting. Selected past exhibitions include: Chameleon (2018) and Alga Marina (2017) at Galeri Soyut in Ankara\, Turkey; Frutti Di Mare (2017) at Atatürk Culture Art and Congress Center in Eskişehir\, Turkey; State of Mind (2012) at Gallery Workshop Çamurdam in Eskişehir\, Turkey. \nCurator: Tima Jam\nAssistant Curators: Anastasia Anastasiadou\, Louis Chapple\, Alisa Lisovskaia\,\nMarija Pleskacova\, Arnis Putnins\, Maryam Sajedi

SUMMARY:Lito Apostolakou - Clothes You'll Never Wear
DESCRIPTION:‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ is a participatory art installation that challenges the function of the retail space as a site of fast fashion consumption by transforming it into an immersive workshop and creative hub for making\, reusing and sharing. \nArtist in residence Lito Apostolakou uses waste materials to create textile sculptures based on personal stories\, memories and perceptions of identity. Drawing inspiration from visual\, textual\, and audio resources\, she invites members of the public to join her in using recyclable materials and waste fabric to create imaginary garments. \n‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ responds to the current precarious climate by transforming waste into visual expressions of identity and reimagining the high street as a centre of creativity. Princes Arcade links the cultural hub of the neighbouring Royal Academy with the bespoke menswear retailers of Jermyn Street\, with the project representing a conceptual and physical bridge between both. \nYou are invited to witness the collection of absurd garments develop and grow\, learn about the stories that inspired the pieces or tune into personal memories.

SUMMARY:Free Art Exhibitions - Legends
DESCRIPTION:Free Art Exhibitions Free Galleries in London \nWhat does it mean to mythologise a place\, person or memory? And how do these stories shape our perception of the world\, history and different cultures? These are the questions that Edouard Baribeaud\, Tae Kim and Tendai Mupita explore through richly layered visual narratives that blur the boundaries between ancient and contemporary\, spiritual and temporal. Legends\, the latest group show at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery’s Wandsworth space\, presents a diverse collection of works that contemplate stories’ powerful psychological and emotional impact. \nFor this exhibition\, French-German artist Edouard Baribeaud explores the transformative and elusive qualities of light about identity and narrative. For example\, the diptych entitled George and Theodora is inspired by the vivid memory of a striking couple. The artist once encountered at a party and Paolo Uccello’s painting of the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. In his work\, Baribeaud recasts the couple into a modern-day version of the myth\, but the roles are reversed so that the princess appears as the protagonist (the knight). The painting Sebastian similarly brings together the contemporary and the classical\, taking its departing point from another brief moment witnessed by the artist. In this case\, Baribeaud was struck by an illuminated entrance hall of a building at night. “The reflections of the street lights on the glass doors and the mirrors inside the building created an almost psychedelic effect\,” he says. “I thought it would be a perfect stage for a painting.” In the image\, an elegant man waits in the hall\, as if caught in the threshold between two worlds: the interior and the exterior in both a literal and metaphorical sense. Alongside these paintings\, Baribeaud has also presented three drawings\, created in collaboration with his partner Sophia Andreotti\, which take the format of tarot cards and illustrate imagined characters representing visions of the present and the future. \nSeoul-based artist Tae Kim’s delicate paintings form part of an ongoing series entitled The Faceless Gamer\, which explores the heightened emotional experiences of the gaming world and the complex notion of identity within this realm. Each work depicts a hybrid being\, a deity-like figure\, in a distinct psychological state. While these are Kim’s imaginations of players that she’s met in online battle games\, the portraits meditate on how the distinction between digital and actual is becoming increasingly blurred and how that might impact not only our perceptions but also how we connect and socialise. Significantly\, the artist employs techniques used in ancient Joseon dynasty portrait paintings\, which aristocrats and royalty mainly commissioned to illustrate their status\, wealth and intelligence. By drawing on this tradition\, Kim elevates alternative characters and hybrid digital experiences as part of a historically significant cultural shift that offers a fluid\, creative space for people from different backgrounds to come together and shape their narratives. \nZimbabwean artist Tendai Mupita’s practice is deeply rooted in the rich heritage and stories of Shona culture. Large portions of his compositions are composed of tiny brushstrokes that create intricate\, repetitive patterns that imply a sense of texture and movement and invite the viewer to examine the surface more closely. For this exhibition\, the artist presents a captivating new series of works that explore specific cultural ideas and rituals around death and grieving. For example\, many traditional Zimbabwean kitchens feature a stoop-like structure that serves a functional purpose as a shelf for cooking pots and water storage. Still\, it also becomes an altar where the coffins are laid\, and people go to communicate with their ancestors. Mupita depicts a figure kneeling at the stoop in one painting while a god-like form appears rising amidst the patterning. While this intimate connection between life and death may seem morbid from a Western perspective\, Mupita’s use of gentle\, uplifting hues suggests a sense of harmony and connectedness. \nSimilarly\, in another artwork\, a hybrid human figure appears draped over a coffin or grave; However\, there is undoubtedly something unsettling or even monstrous about the scene. The regularity and expansiveness of the blue and white patterning in the background have a calming effect. At the same time\, the organic\, circular forms nod to the natural life cycle. \nThese works initiate an intriguing dialogue between colour\, form and texture that emphasises art’s ability to both communicate complex non-verbal experiences and break down the boundaries between different cultures and histories.

DESCRIPTION:Ceramics Workshop\nCreate your own Shisa Guardian Lion statuette while sipping on a unique cocktail in this workshop led by ceramicist Akiko Matsuda.\nShisa are found all over the islands of Okinawa\, Japan’s southernmost prefecture and a beautiful subtropical archipelago. The figures are an iconic part of the islands’ unique history and heritage and can be found on rooftops and roadsides\, in restaurants and workplaces. Believed to ward off bad luck and evil spirits\, in the workshop\, Akiko will guide you through crafting a male (open mouth) or female (closed mouth) Shisa\, telling you more about the symbolism of these island talismans as you make them. To give you a taste of Okinawa\, the host will serve each guest a cocktail made with awamori\, a unique rice-based spirit indigenous to the islands\, as well as some Okinawan snacks sent all the way from the islands by Okinawa Tourism (Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau) which closely worked with Pantechnicon to develop this special experience. \nParticipants can take home their work unfired on the day\, or for an extra fee of £15\, Pantechnicon will arrange for the works to be glazed (transparent glaze) and fired. The firing process will take about one month. \nBook at Pantechnicon.com. \nAbout the artist\nAkiko Matsuda is a ceramic artist born in Kanagawa\, Japan. Since she was a child\, painting\, calligraphy\, music\, and pottery have been an important part of her life. After attending a Shisa making workshop in Okinawa\, Akiko was inspired to pursue a career in ceramics. She majored in ceramics at Tama Art University in Tokyo\, and her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across London and Tokyo. \nTickets cost £40 per person\, including all materials to make your own shisha and an awamori cocktail. This workshop will be held twice\, once at 14:00 and again at 18:00.

SUMMARY:Velo Art Factory Gallery Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Velo\, the #1 Nicotine Pouch in Scandinavia*\, is launching a unique\, collaborative pop-up art space\, Velo Art Factory\, this September. Designed to inspire art lovers and the eco-conscious alike\, it will invite consumers to transform used and empty Velo cans into art pieces with a ‘Trashpresso’ machine. In addition\, the free event (R18. Nicotine users only) will showcase the brand’s new recyclable cans\, marking the first step in Velo’s journey to a more sustainable future.\nLocated in The Ace Corner Shop on Shoreditch High Street\, the pop-up gallery space will run for one weekend only between 17th – 19th September. Guests will be invited to learn more about this modern way to consume nicotine and Velo’s sustainability journey with the launch of its recyclable cans. \nGuests will get hands-on by creating a collection of prints live at the event that will be showcased in the gallery and formed using the letters made from recyclable Velo cans in the ‘Trashpresso’ machine. \nThe Trashpresso machine\, which sits at the heart of the pop-up art gallery experience\, was created by Miniwiz\, a company that specialises in turning post-consumer waste into new materials. Inspiring guests to test their artistic skills\, the Trashpresso machine will upcycle plastic waste from recycled Velo cans into unique typography and patterned printing blocks that can be used to create distinct pieces of art. Londoners will be able to use the quirky Velo lettering and shapes made in the machine to print onto paper which\, once finished\, can then be displayed in the gallery or taken home. \nVelo has also created a unique typeface – Velo Sans Recycled. Not missing an opportunity to recycle\, reuse and reimagine\, Velo’s new and unique font – Velo Sans Recycled\, innovatively squeezes the alphabet from 26 letters to 19 by recycling and repurposing them other letters. This dynamic font will be used as inspiration throughout the pop-up event. \nCreating the ultimate aesthetic for guests\, the design-led space at the pop-up will be split into six ‘Zones’. In addition to the ‘Trashpresso Zone’ where the letters will be produced\, attendees will create their own pieces in the ‘Art Zone’. In the ‘Product Zone’\, they will be able to learn more about Velo and discover its flavour portfolio\, whilst in the ‘Sustainability Zone’\, they will learn more about Velo’s sustainability journey. Finally\, the event experience will end with a fun and immersive ‘Photo Zone’\, so guests can capture their event experience and creative artworks. Reflecting the brand’s ambition towards a more sustainable future\, Velo has ensured recyclable and sustainable materials are used throughout the activation wherever possible\, from set-build to design.

SUMMARY:The Green Room
DESCRIPTION:The Green Room is an exhibition and public engagement project curated by Reem Shadid\, developed\nin part during her residency at V.O Curations. The project invites artists\, Anna Engelhardt and Bahar\nNoorizadeh\, to share questions and insights around the deep interdependence of the digital world\nwith our material one\, namely by exploring digital platforms\, websites\, infrastructures and networks. \nThrough their respective (art)works – Circuits of Truths (C.T) by Engelhardt and Weird Economies\n(W.E)\, a project initiated by Noorizadeh – this presentation will consider the back-end infrastructure of\ndigital platforms as a set of ambiguous relations rather than cables\, wires\, and servers. The exhibition\ncautiously approaches how we relate to and navigate the cyber domain as space. Drawing from the\nspectrum that ranges from public to private physical spaces. \nThe Green Room presents cyberspace as a part of such a continuum. The exhibition unleashes the\ncontent\, architecture\, networks\, and infrastructures of the two works through an online and physical\nspace. It seeks to propose how to think through\, create and re-appropriate other modes of relating\,\ngovernance\, knowledge\, verification and ownership through these tools. \nConceived as a hybrid back-end space\, C.T AND W.E come together through spatial interventions as\nwell as a public programme\, comprising conversations and workshops. W.E and C.T meet at three\ncentral nodes that will guide spatial and conceptual engagement: ownership\, verification and\nsurveillance. \nAs an online platform and think-tank prioritizing artistic strategies that trace economic imaginaries\ndespite current financial arrangements and systems\, Weird Economies (www.weirdeconomies.org)\nself-reflectively questions and deliberates the platform’s code of ethics\, and mode of ownership and\ngovernance. It also aims to recuperate the increasingly extractive\, privatized and hegemonized\ncondition of a digital platform in order to create a common one that is able to scale up and down\neffectively when needed. During the exhibition period\, W.E gathers ‘stakeholders’ to share and\ndiscuss values\, goals and strategies to create a common space for the research and practice of\nalternative economies. At a time when art institutions are increasingly relying on digital content\, how\ncan we understand ownership of this content and its circulation? What forms of collective\nparticipation\, decision-making\, autonomy\, accountability and cooperation among members working\nacross geographies might mean today or what could it look like? What can this hybridity of our being\nand relations open up to in building the tools\, networks\, economies and infrastructures that we need. \nThrough Circuits of Truth\, Engelhardt scrutinises the notions of authenticity and fake\, foundational\nfor our digital realm. The website (https://machinic.info) offers insight into and tools to reconsider our\nrelationship to the complex paradoxes of truth production. Introducing users to the various steps the\ncontent goes through to become ‘true’ reveals the digital assembly line that manufactures\nauthenticity. Engelhardt allows choosing the level and mode of engagement with the infrastructure\nshe investigates. The networks she highlights span from tracking devices that spread fake news to\ncyber weapons that engage verified accounts. Through her intervention in The Green Room\, she\nforces us to confront our own digital autonomy or lack thereof. What is the role of seemingly menial\nvisual signifiers like blue verification ticks and authentication requests on the internet? How can we\nexit the closed verification bubbles reliant on binaries of ‘true’ and ‘fake’? Where do we start looking\nto reverse engineer these various mechanisms of “truth” production? \nThe public programme for The Green Room looks at broader questions of digital infrastructures to\naddress the central nodes of the project. Interviewed by Engelhardt\, Emily Rosamond\, lecturer in\nVisual Cultures at Goldsmiths University\, will talk about reputational warfare and algorithmic rating.\nJared Davis\, Associate Editor of AQNB and co-host of the editorial platform’s Artist Statement\npodcast\, will convene a workshop on digital ownership and cooperation. Finally\, W.E will host a closed\nassembly that will draw and connect desired\, practical and imagined values\, goals and strategies to\ncreating a digital commons based on shared interest in alternative economies; the results of this\nmapping will be installed in space following the workshop. \nThe Green Room scratches at questions around the relationship between digital infrastructures and\nmaterial worlds\, understanding it as a continuum from one realm to another rather than their current\ncommon binary dispossession. What can this understanding support and what does it reveal? In what\nhas become an inevitable search\, we seek to locate public space in relation to private digital worlds\nand vice versa and are left constantly with the question; What can these technologies open up anew\nin our current conditions\, be it as a new language\, constellation of relations\, or an opportunity to\nexplore and instrumentalize that which lies within the gaps and leaks of these intersecting worlds. \nAnna Engelhardt is a Russian media artist and writer whose research-based practice explores post-\nSoviet infrastructures as a form of politics. Comprising texts\, videos\, websites\, and digital platforms\,\nher investigations take on multiple forms of media and distribution as they develop over time. Her\nproject Circuits of Truth (2021) explores cyberwar from the perspective of user verification\, and was\ncommissioned by GARAGE Museum of Contemporary Art\, Moscow. Produced using deepfake\ntechnology\, her video essay Adversarial Infrastructure (2020) investigates the colonial violence of\nthe Russian Crimean Bridge\, and was shown at Ars Electronica\, 67th International Short Film Festival\nOberhausen\, Vancouver International Film Festival and Kyiv Biennial. Anna’s writings have been\npublished in Mute Magazine\, Strelka Magazine\, Journal of Visual Culture\, and the European Review. \nBahar Noorizadeh is a filmmaker\, writer\, and platform designer. She works on the reformulation of\nhegemonic time narratives as they collapse in the face of speculation: philosophical\, financial\, legal\,\nfutural\, etc. Noorizadeh is the founder of Weird Economies\, an online art platform that traces\neconomic imaginaries extraordinary to financial arrangements of our time. Her work has appeared at\nthe German Pavilion\, Venice Architecture Biennial 2021\, Tate Modern Artists’ Cinema Program\,\nTransmediale Festival\, DIS Art platform\, Berlinale Forum Expanded\, and Geneva Biennale of Moving\nImages among others. She is pursuing her work as a PhD candidate in Art at Goldsmiths\, University\nof London where she holds a SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship. \nReem Shadid is a curator\, researcher and cultural organizer who works on the emancipatory\npossibilities within artistic practice\, exploring the ways it intersects with ecological\, political and\nsocio-economic forms. She is the producer and host of Radio Alhara’s show Listening with Reem\nShadid; monthly listening sessions with artists\, researchers and curators working at the intersection\nof sonic\, visual and literary productions. She is also a contributing editor at Infrasonica\, a digital\nplatform of non-western cultures. Previously\, she was the Deputy Director of Sharjah Art Foundation\,\nwhere she served in various capacities\, focusing mainly on organising and producing the Sharjah\nBiennial between 2006-2020.

SUMMARY:The Way Through The Forest | Punam Singh | 2nd – 13th November 2021
DESCRIPTION:Punam is inspired by the ever-changing and evolving nature of gardens and forests. Her abstract artwork is influenced by the landscapes\, forests and grasslands of Assam and England. In her first solo exhibition\, Punam’s abstract paintings explore the spiritual qualities of woods\, inspired by the power of nature and trees to create mindfulness and reduce stress. \nThe artist spent much of her early life immersed in the forest environment. The cycles of transformation\, growth and her memories of the wilderness are reflected in the textures of her work. \nFor her\, forests are a place of mystery and discovery\, representing resilience\, transition and change. \nThese qualities\, rediscovered during lockdown walks through London’s ancient woodland\, have been a source of strength\, healing and inspiration during the pandemic. \nThis exhibition shares some of the work created during this period\, emanating the meditative emotions often felt when dwelling amidst the trees. \nPunam works using acrylics\, pigments and gouache. She uses canvases as well as wood\, bamboo and casement cloth to paint on. The layers and textures in her paintings are influenced by what she saw in the forests as a child. She uses concrete and plaster to create these effects. Her work is colourful\, reflecting the vibrancy of nature and life. \nThe Artist \nPunam was born in a tea garden in Assam\, India\, and grew up in the foothills of the Himalayas. She has lived in London since 2000. \nPunam gained a Post Graduate Diploma in Social Communications Media from the University of Bombay\, Sophia College. She worked for many years in the 1990s as an advertising film director. Punam is a self-taught artist\, and in recent years\, she has used her artistic practice to re-engage with her creative past. \nThis exhibition is dedicated to the memory of her beloved son Jai. A percentage of the proceeds from the show will go to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

She is a figurative painter focusing on contemporary beauty concepts popularised and polarised amongst women and influencers. Her inspirations are strongly connected with the fashion world\, a field she was very familiar with as she worked in the industry before studying art. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw with a BA in Fashion Design and at the Wimbledon College of Arts with an MA in Painting. More recently\, she completed the Turps Banana Painting off-site programme in London. Her works have been exhibited in exhibitions in the UK\, Poland\, Hungary\, Sweden and Germany. \nFlora Borsi \nFlora Borsi is a young fine art photographer from Hungary. She uses exquisite photo manipulation to create surreal images that are thematically focused on identity\, relationships\, emotions and dreams. Her flawless technique and subtle conceptual ideas create beautiful evocations of universal emotions\, from lust and desire to despair and loss. Borsi at once captures the complex strength and fragility of the human psyche. She expertly visualises dark fantasies and atmospheric dreams\, utilising the uncanny and clever metaphor\, while unlocking what it means to think\, feel\, dream and express in the urban world. Her work often features the female body. She plays with hiding and revealing the eyes or face to leave only the feminine form\, exploring questions of female representation and the relationship between body and self. Borsi has exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions in Europe and the USA and has most notably taken part in the Continental Shift group exhibition at Saatchi Gallery. She has also exhibited at the Louvre\, France. \nMarcus Jake \nMarcus Jake is a full-time abstract and mixed-media artist born in the UK. He is currently making his home in Victoria\, BC\, Canada. Jake was educated in Bristol\, UK\, where he studied and received his BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art and Certificate in Higher Education in Photography. \nWhat initially appear to be two very separate and distinct bodies of work (abstract painting and mixed-media photography) are\, in fact profoundly connected and interlinked\, both inspiring people to connect with that part of themselves that makes them feel truly alive and magnetically present. It is an art that celebrates bravery and courage\, the path we walk to get to where we are\, portraying our beautiful individuality\, deep connected humanity and energetic bond to life. Immeasurably entwined into the narrative are our human connection\, our connection to all other life and our expansive connection to the planet we live on. \nJake has exhibited internationally\, including in London\, Brighton\, Bristol\, Glasgow\, Barcelona\, Rome\, Paris\, Vancouver\, BC\, Victoria\, BC\, and several awards. \nKate Viner \nSculptor Kate Viner has been commissioned to create several large public artworks. Anthony Caro’s heavy metal constructionism was the backdrop of Viner’s 80’s art school experience at Winchester. As a result\, she spent years honing her skills in welding and forging steel. \nHowever\, her formal art education started much earlier. Aged 15\, she began training under Patricia Austin to sculpt the figure directly from life in clay. Consequently\, she is comfortable in various materials and techniques and works both abstractly and figuratively. \nUnderlying themes that motivate Viner’s work are the delicate balances between conflict\, religion\, sexuality\, respect and sacrifice. Her practice explores human evolution. She is interested in shifting attitudes towards female sexuality and the paradox of femininity. Her nudes are intimate yet not voyeuristic or sexualised. Her work often returns to the themes of religion\, women\, war and their relationships. The material and technique she selects are dictated by the subject matter the artwork demands. \nWorking collaboratively with teams and Outreach projects within communities is an integral part of the process that she relishes\, as her interest in the human narrative has always been her driving force. \nTeresa Wells \nBritish artist Teresa Wells creates figurative bronze sculptures that celebrate the dynamism\, resilience and emotive capacity of the human body. Whether portraying figures in movement\, dancing nudes or contemplative portraits\, Wells has a knack for capturing a human likeness in her art. Some of Wells’ sculptures are life-size\, whilst others are made smaller or bigger\, reflecting either the intimacy or impact of each piece. Wells’ art is inspired by how humans behave\, with a particular focus on the endurance and strength of the human body. \nBronze is integral to Wells’ practice\, not only because of its smooth and refined surface texture but predominantly because of its extremely high tensile strength. The durability and flexibility of bronze allow Wells to experiment with composition and arrangement\, resulting in dynamic poses and energetic subjects. Wells uses the lost wax process to create her sculptures\, and she often places her sculptures high up on plinths to enhance the Sense of movement. \nSam Haynes \nSam Haynes is a mid-career visual artist based in London\, interested in physicality and materiality of forms\, creating abstract assemblages and installations\, strongly influenced by her inclusive engagement practice. \nAs an artist that initially felt isolated and uncomfortably distanced from everyday life working within a studio\, Haynes started her practice over twenty-five years ago\, creating site-specific public art installations\, engaging local communities with the belief that art has the power to bridge divides within society. Her creative process is still all about making connections\, both as an artist facilitator and a collaborator and sculptor. Accessibility lies at the heart of her work\, incorporating found objects and materials\, using low-tech methods of construction to create abstract assemblages that reference domestic and architectural space. \nThese recent mixed media works\, developed since lockdown 2020\, combine a rhythmical\, systematic design and geometric structure with softer\, flexible elements that shape more organically. Haynes is led primarily by an intuitive response to these contrasting or opposing materials\, leading to often unexpected outcomes. These playful interactions\, surprising and yet familiar\, seek to create a sense of balance and tension\, building dynamic connections between materials and the surrounding space\, animated through the use of colour\, light\, and shadow. This recent work is presented in photographic form\, printed directly onto aluminium\, giving the lightest areas a shine as you move across the image. \nHaynes has worked in arts facilitation for many years\, engaging marginalised communities and working with disability and mental health charities. Her public sculptural installations include commissions for Amnesty International\, Public Art Wales\, and the deaf-blind charity\, Sense. As well as leading Arts Council funded projects she has exhibited interactive sculpture at the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden and collaborative\, site-specific artwork at the Southbank’s Royal Festival Hall. \nIan Brennan \nHaving spent almost two decades in the corporate world\, Ian Brennan decided to follow his lifelong dream of becoming an artist. In 2019 Brennan chose to devote his attention to painting full time. Having worked with interior designers and architects\, his paintings have found homes from LA to several restaurants and homes in London. Brennan trained as a psychotherapist in his late twenties and brought the depth of the inward journey into his artwork. Brennan’s abstract landscapes are often his response to the elements and nature. His close observation combines with intriguing surface texture and carefully balanced composition to create a unique representation of his internal landscape. Brennan’s paintings have an open-ended narrative that allows the viewer to be suspended in a dreamlike reality. No defined answers are offered\, only the encouragement to enter a world within the piece and explore it with your sensibility. Brennan is becoming one of Europe’s most exciting emerging artists. His work is highly sought after. Brennan recently won an award at this year’s London Art Biennale. \nPedro Sousa Louro \nA textural tangibility is immediately evident in Pedro Sousa Louro’s work. Earthy and material-focused\, a natural beauty is found within the play between dark woods and a muddied palette. Furthermore\, geometry plays a crucial role here\, as clean white lines converse with muted colour blocks. There is an almost archival\, collage-like approach to applying materials and hues\, and it is as if Sousa Louro has assumed the role of archaeologist\, unearthing layers of forgotten history. Educated at Chelsea College of Arts\, Sousa Louro is one of the most talked-about LGBTQ artists at the moment.

SUMMARY:'Siluetas'\, Joachim Lambrechts - Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:12 November – 18 December 2021\nKristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, 2 Melior Place\, Bermondsey \nPrivate View: Thursday 11 November\, from 6:30 – 9 pm \nA skull smoking a cigarette\, an oversized duck laying an egg\, and a smiling butterfly. These are the eccentric visions of Belgian artist Joachim Lambrechts who plays with composition and form to evoke a sense of childlike joy and spontaneity. While the artist typically employs a vibrant colour palette\, his latest solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, London\, entitled Siluetas\, presents a bold new series of textural\, monochromatic works\, marking newfound confidence and aesthetic purity. \n \n  \n  \nLambrechts’ practice embraces and celebrates free creative expression. He never plans his compositions\, instead preferring to allow the image to reveal itself through the act of mark-making. Although this new series of black and white paintings express a certain restraint\, the images retain a powerful sense of dynamism which reflects the artist’s spontaneous process. With these works\, he began by pasting pieces of coloured paper onto the canvas to create a sense of texture and depth before applying layers of black paint. Broad brush strokes and lines of white colour were then used to delineate the outlines of objects and animals so that from a distance\, they appear as silhouettes or shadows. At the same time\, closer inspection reveals flashes of colour breaking through the surface where the artist has scratched or scraped away the paint. This creates a palpable tension between mark-making and erasure\, movement and stillness\, artistic abandon and creative control.\nFor this latest body of work\, Lambrechts took inspiration from early cave paintings\, which convey complex narratives and emotions despite their simplistic style. Similarly\, the artist has deliberately restricted his lines to what is only necessary to obtain a particular shape or form. The painting Pantera Negra\, for example\, depicts a black cat (or panther) whose body mainly consists of a large black shape with four vertical lines indicating the outlines of its front legs. As with all artworks\, Lambrechts’ signature graphical style simultaneously clarifies and distorts our understanding of the image. The cat’s shape appears both childlike and surreal\, just as in the painting Pegasus\, we can immediately identify the mythical horse while viewing the creature from a seemingly impossible perspective. All four of its legs appear along the same line\, bent and twisted into unnatural angles. “For me\, painting is not so much wanting to convey a message\, but rather a search for shapes\, lines and colour and seeing what possibilities they offer me\,” explains Lambrechts. At the same time\, this approach invites the viewer to engage more creatively as we are given greater freedom to interpret the compositions. \nWith some of the works\, the artist guides or destabilises our interpretation by incorporating text into the image. The words sometimes act as direct visual labels\, such as Black Eagle or Lions\, while others appear as witty modern-day aphorisms. The painting When the owl wakes up at night to kill\, we sleep\, for example\, depicts an owl seemingly in a kind of trance state\, its eyes filled with white circles and its wings extended while the text forms a literal frame or border around the edge of the canvas. In this way\, Lambrechts questions his role as an image-maker by demonstrating how our understanding of artwork is shaped by the composition itself and its framing and external contexts such as titles\, accompanying text\, and the surroundings in which the work appears. At the same time\, however\, he draws us closer to the image by inviting us to engage more actively and intimately with the artistic process.\nThese complex embedded layers of tension and bold visual contrasts are what make the artworks so compelling. By the very nature of paint\, they are static scenes while simultaneously bursting with raw\, exuberant creativity. \n  \n \n  \nAbout Joachim Lambrechts\nJoachim Lambrechts (born in 1986) is a renowned urban artist from Antwerp\, Belgium. In 2001 he began his studies at an art school in Antwerp. Later he got very involved with the graffiti and street art scene in his home city\, and in 2004 he distanced himself from his academic education and left art school without graduating. In the years that followed\, Joachim spent a lot of time experimenting with various approaches to graffiti and became quickly integrated into the Belgian street art scene. Since 2010\, painting on canvas has been Joachim’s primary focus and creating street art across Europe. \nIn contrast to his murals\, Joachim never makes preliminary studies or sketches when he starts working on a canvas. Yet\, paradoxically\, he feels more accessible within the four walls of his studio\, which is reflected in his paintings. They result from a more spontaneous process\, and as such\, possess a sense of urgency and innocence.

SUMMARY:'Be A Part Of The Art' Collaborative Workshop With Artist In Residence Sam Wagner
DESCRIPTION:Join Artist in Residence Sam Wagner in creating a piece of artwork for his final show. As this residency focuses on Reemergence and New Norms\, Sam would like to hear what these themes mean to others. First\, participants will choose a shape and colour that best represents themselves and their personal experience. Then we will each write something they have learned about themselves over the past two years. Profiles and stories will remain anonymous to enable participants to be as truthful as possible about their experiences. Finally\, Sam will bring these shapes together to create a unified work of art that speaks to common themes and experiences expressed by participants. This collaborative piece will be displayed at the show opening on March 17th. \nSam Wagner is part of the ever-changing programme of artists in residence at Bankside Hotel’s maker’s studio. Bankside provides a permanent creative space and works with curators Contemporary Collective who champion up-and-coming creatives\, covering a wide range of disciplines including design\, painting\, sculpture\, film\, drawing\, printmaking\, installation\, new media and photography. SUMMARY:Sotheby's Institute of Art Panel Discussion: Does the Artist’s Muse Have a Place in the Modern World?

What is the future of the muse? \nThe event will be chaired by Ruth Millington\, Author of Muse (2022\, Vintage Publishing) and a faculty member at Sotheby’s Institute of Art. \nThis event is in partnership with Sotheby’s Institute of Art
