DESCRIPTION:Join internationally acclaimed photographer Robert Vano for a special artist talk exploring his extraordinary life and career spanning New York\, Paris\, Milan and Prague. Born in Czechoslovakia and forced into exile after 1967\, Vano became one of the leading names in fashion and portrait photography\, working for magazines including Vogue\, Harper’s Bazaar and Cosmopolitan. Known for his striking black-and-white portraits\, male nudes and mastery of historical photographic techniques such as platinotype\, Vano will reflect on his artistic journey\, inspirations\, iconic collaborations and the changing world of photography. \n\nRobert Vano (b. 1948) is a photographer of Czechoslovak origin and one of the most celebrated figures in Central European photography. After leaving Czechoslovakia\, he lived and worked in the United States\, France and Italy before settling in Prague in the early 1990s. He is best known for his fashion photography\, black-and-white portraits and male nudes\, as well as his experimentation with Polaroid photography and the historic platinum printing process. His work has appeared in leading international magazines and has been exhibited widely in the Czech Republic and abroad. In 2010\, he received the international Trebbia Award for his contribution to culture and the arts. \n\nThis artist talk accompanies Love You from Prague\, Robert Vano’s retrospective exhibition on view across the Czech Centre galleries from 26 June to 4 September 2026.

Exhibition + Online Auction
DESCRIPTION:IMTwentyOne marks IMT Gallery’s 21st anniversary with a benefit exhibition and online auction\, bringing together over 100 unique works by emerging to established artists such as Amanda Beech\, Adam Chodzko\, Benedict Drew\, Soyoung Hyun\, Melanie Jackson\, Kenji Lim\, John Russell\, Tai Shani\, Nicola Singh\, and Suzanne Treister. \nArtists have been invited to create an original A4 work in any medium. Works including painting\, drawing\, ceramics\, sculpture and prints will be exhibited at IMT Gallery in a democratic alphabetical hang\, and made available via an online auction launching to coincide with London Gallery Weekend. Each work will have a starting bid of £50. \nParticipating artists include those IMT has previously collaborated with\, alongside nominations by the gallery’s represented artists David Burrows\, Plastique Fantastique\, Maggie Roberts and Ra Tack\, and curators the gallery has worked with over the years\, including Mark Rohtmaa-Jackson\, Kirsten Cooke and Nicole Sansone. The project reflects on the artists\, conversations and projects that have shaped the gallery over the past two decades\, and offers a wide range of current practices presented by an international community of artists. \nAll works in IMTwentyOne have been kindly donated by the participating artists. Proceeds from the auction will support IMT’s future curatorial and educational programmes. \nAbout IMT Gallery: \nFounded in 2005\, IMT Gallery is a contemporary art space in London dedicated to showcasing critically engaged and innovative art. With two decades of experience\, the gallery has built a reputation for supporting boundary-pushing artists and presenting thought-provoking projects that delve into complex social\, cultural\, and philosophical themes. Alongside its exhibition programme\, the gallery represents a core group of emerging to established artists\, organises workshops and courses that offer a unique approach to engaging with art\, and commissions experimental writing on critical contemporary art. \nRoutledge recently published Contemporary Exhibition-Making and Management: Curating IMT Gallery as a Hybrid Space\, authored by the gallery’s long-standing curator (2005 – 2023) Mark Rohtmaa-Jackson. DESCRIPTION:Once again the artists and makers of E8 are opening up their homes and studios over the weekend of 20-21 June for another wonderful art trail. \nThis summer we are pleased that the legendary Eastern Curve Garden is housing additional local artists in their new indoor space and that the George pub and Stow Brothers have again been generous with their spaces. All venues are within walking distance\, and can be found on the handy interactive and downloadable map on the E8 Art & Craft trail website. \n  \nThere will be a wide range of work on show and for sale including ceramics\, prints\, phtography\, traditional and contemporary paintings\, drawings\, jewellery and textiles. \nAs well as established favourites there are quite a few new artists. \nAn interactive trail map can be followed easily on a phone and a printed map can be downloaded from the website.

SUMMARY:Blood of My Blood - Photography Exhibition by Magda Kuca
DESCRIPTION:Magda Kuca presents a body of work highlighting the shared histories of photography and medicine at the Old Operating Theatre. \nBlood of My Blood is a multi-faceted project that investigates the link between personal narratives and scientific advancement through a photographic lens. Kuca’s solo exhibition blends in with the surroundings at the former site of both herbal apothecary and early surgical procedures. \nAt the core of the project lies the artist’s response to her mother’s cancer journey. Applying a camera-less form of experimental photography to capture their embracing bodies\, Kuca expresses shared vulnerability while echoing the effects of chemotherapy with the marks and traces left on the resulting image. \nFor a series of wet collodion portraits captured on glass\, and limbs on surgery-grade steel\, Kuca allows the unvarnished surfaces to decompose and tarnish\, repairing deliberate fractures with silver. Still lifes of plague doctor masks provide a link to the healing herbs grown in the museum’s attic. \nThe contemporary works are displayed in cabinets alongside the museum’s main collection. Reminiscent of vintage medical journals\, they evoke a sense of nostalgia while highlighting subsequent progress in overcoming physical injury and infectious disease. \nThe surgeries at the Old Operating Theatre were performed on women without anaesthetics or antiseptics\, in front of a live audience of predominantly male medical students. We will print and frame the selected works which will be on display from Wednesday 29 July – Monday 24 August. The finalists and overall winner of the competition will be announced at the private view on Wednesday 29 July from 7.30 – 9.30pm. \nTo enter this category\, please read over the rules and send your entry via the link below by Friday 10 July. \nSubmit via email \nOver 25? DESCRIPTION:Presented at Cris Contini Contemporary in collaboration with Carola Syz Projects\, this exhibition brings into focus the enduring visual language of Willie Christie\, whose work as a fashion photographer\, spanning over a decade\, continues to resonate with striking clarity and relevance today.\n\nEmerging at a pivotal moment when fashion\, music\, and popular culture converged\, Christie photographed a constellation of defining figures\, including David Bowie\, Bryan Ferry\, Jerry Hall\, and Grace Jones. His images move beyond documentation\, constructing presence through a masterful use of light\, colour\, and composition\, creating photographs that feel cinematic and charged with atmosphere.\nA central element of his practice is his work for British Vogue\, where he produced a significant body of editorial imagery alongside ten striking covers. Created in collaboration with Grace Coddington\, then a fashion editor at the magazine and later his wife\, these works introduced a new visual language defined by narrative\, mood\, and a refined sense of artifice.\n\nAmong the highlights of the exhibition is Christie’s iconic 1969 portrait of Mick Jagger\, in which a luminous halo of light transforms the image into something mythic. Also featured are his photographs of Jerry Hall on the set of The Spy Who Loved Me at Pinewood Studios\, capturing both the scale of cinematic production and the magnetic presence of the subject.\nChristie’s later move into film\, including projects connected to Pink Floyd’s The Final Cut\, further reflects the cinematic quality that defines his work. Across both still and moving images\, his practice explores atmosphere\, narrative\, and the emotional resonance of light.\nWillie Christie: Light\, Lens\, Legend presents a body of work that remains both timeless and influential\, inviting a renewed appreciation of photography as a medium capable of shaping perception\, memory\, and desire.

DESCRIPTION:Embrace the power of collaborative creation in the second in a series of transformative workshops led by artist duo Georgia Clemson and Lina Ivanova\, hosted by IMT Gallery. In The Museum of Connection\, you are invited to explore the generative possibilities of collectivity through a series of guided creative exercises and to imagine working together as a new way to survive on our damaged planet. \nIn the last decade\, our experience of closeness has radically shifted. Digital interactions\, though abundant\, have left many of us reliant on screens for connection. Georgia and Lina began The Museum of Connection in response to this change\, inspired by Donna Haraway’s term Sympoiesis\, meaning making-with\, a reminder that all creation and survival depend on collaboration. \nThe duo will transform IMT Gallery into a space of encounter\, a shared and fertile ground where real-life connection and creativity can take root. Each workshop in the series will be themed for a collective act: food\, play\, touch\, and movement. For this workshop\, Lina and Georgia invite you to use your whole body to create an image with a difference\, exploring the theme of movement. \nIn this workshop\, we will gather in the gallery to create one-of-a-kind artworks\, both collectively and individually. The event will begin with a specially themed meditation\, written by the artists\, and unfold into writing and drawing games. The primary technique in this event will focus on cyanotypes\, a form of experimental camera-less photography. This technique reduces the image to its fundamental components – light\, shadow and form. The process is unpredictable by nature\, resulting in artworks that record our intentional and incidental marks\, the traces of presence\, sharing\, and interaction. Each image created is ephemeral but can be ‘fixed’ as a lasting memory of the moment. The workshop will culminate in the collaborative creation of a large-scale cyanotype. \nAs a participant\, you will have the opportunity to contribute what you make to the Museum’s growing archive\, as a living monument to community\, built within two fleeting hours\, yet resonant with the lasting memory of connection. \nEach workshop in this series is different\, so if you have joined us before\, you are welcome to join us again. No experience is necessary. Please bring your preferred drawing materials and paper\, additional supplies will also be provided. \nMeet the artists: \nGeorgia\, Clemson\, and Lina Ivanova are London-based artists with fifteen years of combined experience in creative facilitation. They first exhibited together in A Cohesion of Light at Peckham 24 (2021)\, and created The Museum of Connection in 2024. Both artists have a background in experimental photography and make work challenging the conventions of the medium. \nGeorgia’s work has been featured in Source Photographic Review\, Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue Italia. Recent exhibitions include The vessel that contains me at Creative Health Camden and Retreat: the UK’s first climate refugees at Middlesex University as part of Barnet Climate Action Month. Lina is a co-founder of Revolv Collective and a recipient of the Turner Contemporary Portfolio Prize. Her work has been exhibited by RPS\, the South Bermondsey Art Trail\, and the Goethe Institut in Bulgaria. SUMMARY:The Queen and the Playwright: A Royal Visit at the Prague Castle
DESCRIPTION:The photographs by Czech photographer Alan Pajer capture the historic and intimate atmosphere of HM Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to the Czech Republic\, which took place 30 years ago\, in March 1996. \n\nHer host was the then President of the young country\, former dissident\, prisoner of conscience\, and playwright Václav Havel\, and with him the whole Czech nation. \nSet against the optimistic backdrop of the 1990s\, in a country enjoying its first years of freedom after the fall of the Communist regime in 1989\, the Queen’s visit was a significant moment. Although sharing many important moments of courage and solidarity throughout history\, the two countries had been officially separated for decades by the Iron Curtain\, as Sir Winston Churchill famously named the ideological barrier between Soviet-controlled Eastern Europe and the democratic West. In reality\, however\, it was not only an ideological divide\, but also a very real physical barrier\, marked by barbed wire\, border fortifications\, and strict controls that limited movement between East and West. \nAnd it wasn‘t all just protocol when this heavy veil was finally lifted. Queen Elizabeth II and President Havel not only exchanged state orders\, but also discussed private topics\, such as their shared love for dogs. The Queen and her husband\, HRH Prince Philip\, did not miss the opportunity to walk over the famous Charles Bridge to cross the River Vltava\, and even met some Churchill fans on the way. The visit also followed earlier visits and a long-standing interest in Prague and its cultural heritage\, shown by the then-Prince Charles. Famously\, the Queen demonstrated her well-known respect for people when she decided to visit not only the capital city of Prague\, but also the Moravian hub of Brno. \nThe visit also brought some important closure. The Queen addressed a sensitive moment in Czech-British history\, when in 1938\, Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain signed the Munich Agreement\, which stated – against the will of the Czechoslovak government – that the bordering\, mainly German-speaking parts of Czechoslovakia would become part of Nazi Germany in the hope of appeasing Hitler. It was a failure which still resonates today. \nAlan Pajer (b. 1948) was one of the photographers of the Czech presidential couple since 1996\, capturing historic diplomatic moments of the newly established Czech Republic\, which came into existence in 1993 after the peaceful break-up of Czechoslovakia. \n„In this century\, my country actively supported the creation of the first Czechoslovak Republic under President Masaryk\, which had such a tragically short existence. The events that brought it to an end are the only shadow over our relationship\, and I understand and sympathise with the feelings in this country over the Munich Agreement\,“ the Queen said in Prague in 1996. Her visit is retrospectively seen as an important milestone in fulfilling the Czech ambition to join NATO and the EU. DESCRIPTION:Join us on 8 April to mark International Roma Day for Roma Routes\, an evening of photography\, film\, and contemporary art exploring the journeys that shape Roma identity. Bringing together documentary work from a collaborative project in Tiszavasvári\, Hungary\, and artistic reflections by London-based Roma artist Robert Czibi\, the exhibition traces connections between place\, memory\, and belonging. Through images\, stories\, and personal perspectives\, Roma Routes invites audiences to reflect on how identity is shaped between the places we come from and the places we continue to become. \nThis exhibition brings together two intertwined narratives: the story of a segregated Roma community in Tiszavasvári\, and that of an artist born in another Roma neighbourhood in the same region who has carried its memory across borders. \nThe first story is that of collaboration: stepping across internal borders between the countryside and the Hungarian capital\, Budapest\, to involve participants from the Roma neighbourhood of a small town in the North-East of Hungary in a collaborative writing project with local non-Roma residents through the publication of the periodical Duj Dzséne – Ketten – Two Together. \nThe second story is of the artist\, Robert Czibi who crossed internal borders of identity and the physical borders of countries on many occasions before finding his expressive voice in the multiplicity of London’s lingua-culture. The simultaneity of identity as rootedness in Roma origins and identity as motion and interaction with our surroundings is what unites the two narratives that unfold in the images exhibited together. \n\nThe Road Ahead\nDocumentary and Photography Projects from Hungary – Film and photography \nThis photo exhibition was created in collaboration between photojournalist Márton Kállai\, multiple-winner of the Hungarian Press Photo Competition\, and the Tiszavasvári Roma Girls’ Youth Club\, on the initiative of the KRE Linguistic Diversity and Social Participation research group at Károli Gáspár University in Budapest. Together\, Roma and non-Roma participants from Tiszavasvári and Budapest write and publish the journal Duj Dzséne – Ketten – Two Together\, creating a narrative of trust and belonging about Roma futures and the coexistence of Roma and non-Roma in Hungary. The documentary film Duj Dzséne – Ketten – Two Together: Stories of a collaborative journal in support of Roma social participation showcases stages from their journey together: how they forged a collaborative writing and research collective across the borders of identity that separate people living alongside each other. \n\n\nThere I Was Born\, Here I Become\nContemporary Art \nRobert Czibi’s artistic response unfolds as a parallel journey alongside the documentary and the photos. Although Robert’s works reflect his individual journey as a London-based Roma artist from Hungary\, his journey explores the potentialities that open up when collectives or individuals persistently criss-cross and interrogate physical and narrative borders of identity. Through his works\, he returns to the landscapes of his childhood not only to remember\, but to understand how identity is formed between the place of birth and the place of becoming. Through images\, he explores what it means to grow up in a Roma family\, to leave it behind\, and to continue carrying its imprint in his works. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate International Women’s Day 2026\, the Royal Hospital Chelsea is delighted to partner with photographer Jackie King to display a collection of never-before-seen photographs showing some of the 19 female Chelsea Pensioners who currently call the Royal Hospital their home. \nWomen were first admitted to the Royal Hospital Chelsea as Chelsea Pensioners in 2009\, a full three hundred and seventeen years after the Hospital first opened its doors to Army veterans. Since 2009\, many women have chosen to become part of the Royal Hospital community\, donning their scarlet coats with pride. Yet today – seventeen years later – many people are still surprised when they meet a female Chelsea Pensioner. \nThrough her photos\, Jackie King highlights the character of some of the female Chelsea Pensioners currently resident with us. Showcasing the individualism of each sitter\, she shares their unique stories visually\, while representing how embedded in the Royal Hospital community female Pensioners are today.

SUMMARY:REUNION 79:21 - Revisiting Black Queer London Clubland
DESCRIPTION:For a short run of five days\, queer club culture returns to Soho with an archival exhibition exploring over four decades of Black queer nightlife and community in London. \n  \nWhereas focus is often placed on the white gay scene\, this exhibition showcases the history of Black queer club culture from the late 1970s to the present by documenting lived experience\, collective memory and self-representation through previously unpublished images and memorabilia sourced from public and private archives. \n  \nIn the 1980s\, Black queer and trans people in the UK began to attend underground parties as sanctuaries from discrimination\, creating community through music and dance. Inspired by the queer collectives in Chicago and Detroit\, the London nightlife scene combined US musical forms with home grown genres. \n  \nBrothers Steve and Dave Swindell were at the heart of London clubland\, Steve running successful nights like ‘The Lift’ and ‘Jungle’ with Dave documenting the emergence of Black queer visibility. His intimate imagery is shown alongside Jason Manning’s photographs taken in the bolder years that followed. \n  \nREUNION 79:21 is complemented by a programme of films and talks that expand on themes of kinship and shared belonging\, HIV and early LGBTQ activism\, and the fight for individual sovereignty at a critical time in the UK.

DESCRIPTION:Great Pulteney Street Gallery rings in 2026 with a group exhibition that explores the links between marginalised materials and cultural hierarchies. For Connecting Threads Paul Carey-Kent and Christina Niederberger selected eleven artists whose works broaden the scope of textile art. \nHaving long been dismissed as inferior to painting and sculpture\, stitched\, woven and threaded works are increasingly receiving attention and recognition\, yet are still widely considered as separate from traditional fine art disciplines. Just as aspects of identity relating to race\, sexuality or gender are becoming more fluid\, so are artists redefining their practice in terms of medium\, material or methodology. \nThe participants in Connecting Threads incorporate physical and conceptual elements of textile art into painting\, photography and sculpture in response to societal and political shifts. Sam Owen Hull comments on an increasingly polarised world with the material contradictions of spontaneous painterly marks and considered hand embroidery\, while Christine Niederberger interweaves unconscious readings of Abstract Expressionism as a male domain with textile elements widely perceived as female. Michael Raedecker and Tamar Mason both explore the impact of humanity on the natural world\, from an urban and rural perspective\, respectively. \nWith the majority of works in the show leaning towards more abstract and conceptual approaches\, Caroline Achaintre’s and Debbie Lawson’s tapestries bear the closest resemblance to traditional textile art. The former creates hybrid characters by blending materials and cultural references; the latter hides imaginary creatures in patterned carpets. \nJulie Cockburn and Berend Strik both use textile techniques to add new meaning to found photographs\, while Hannah Knox mirrors the meditative slowness of knitting when meticulously painting items of clothing. Kate Terry uses thread to draw physical lines into space while John Walter digitally re-engineers popular textile patterns to draw attention to the intersection of art\, science and architecture. \nThe location itself provides a link to Soho’s rag trade legacy that has evolved from fabric traders and garment showrooms to flagship boutiques and a fashion destination.

DESCRIPTION:Pixels and Poetics: Sudek\, Funke and the Influence of New Technologies on the Development of Photography connects the world of interwar analogue photography with the visual aesthetics of today’s digital age. It offers visitors a unique opportunity to trace how the image has transformed over two centuries—from tangible traces of light to synthetic visual worlds created by artificial intelligence. \nThe exhibition presents iconic works by Josef Sudek and Jaromír Funke\, whose photographs demonstrate how light\, composition\, and atmosphere can transform reality into poetic or constructive visual worlds. These classical approaches are complemented by historical photomontages\, double exposures\, and analogue manipulations\, showing how deeply the desire to reshape the image is established in the tradition of photography. The historical works in the exhibition are drawn from the PPF Art collection\, which plays a key role in preserving and presenting Czech photographic heritage. \nThe contemporary section of the exhibition develops this dialogue through artists working with AI and generative technologies. In her work Your Addiction Is the Message\, Barbora Trnková reveals the mechanisms of visual dependency in the digital environment and the role of technologies in shaping our perceptions. Lenka Hamošová\, in the project Troubling GAN and the series Strange Attractions\, explores both the aesthetics and limitations of neural networks\, showing how algorithms create and reproduce stereotypes or visual hallucinations. A collaborative work by Trnková and Javůrek\, Generation of Princesses\, uses generative models to critically reflect on pop-culture ideals of femininity and their digital reconstruction. Andor Kraszna-Krausz became a leading editor\, reviewer\, and cultural commentator in photography and the moving image. After relocating to Britain in 1937\, he established Focal Press\, which he developed into the world’s foremost photography publisher. By his retirement in 1978\, Focal Press had produced more than 1\,200 titles\, selling over 50 million books globally in multiple languages. Beyond publishing\, AKK was known for his cultured interests—from motor cars and antiques to literature and his beloved dogs.\nThis lecture presents new research and fresh insights into AKK’s extraordinary career and personal passions. Drawing on material from AKK’s archive—bequeathed to the National Museum of Photography\, Film and Television—and on the legacy of the Kraszna-Krausz Foundation\, Dr Pritchard will illuminate how AKK transformed photography publishing and left an enduring impact on visual culture.\nAbout the Speaker\nDr Michael Pritchard is a leading photography historian with a PhD in the history of photography. DESCRIPTION:On photography\, belonging\, inherited histories\, and the launch of Porcelain and Wool.\n\n\n\nJoin us for a conversation between curator Catherine Troiano and Kincső Bede\, exploring Bede’s photographic practice and its intersection with questions of belonging and legacy. \nA Hungarian visual artist from Romania\, Bede is fascinated by the communist past of her homeland. Her work evokes a personal view on collective histories that carved a deep chasm between generations: that of her parents\, who lived through communism and the regime change\, and that of Bede\, who inherited their stories\, experiences and their trauma. Bede’s practice delves into the complexities of cultural heritage\, in a bid to move closer to her parents and the versions of their lives dominated by the voice\, fears\, desires\, secrets and paranoia of Nicolae Ceaușescu and his Securitate. \nIn this conversation with Troiano\, Bede will reflect on her experience as part of the Székely Hungarian minority in Transylvania\, Romania\, and how photography has mediated her view of tradition\, self-definition and faith: ‘my parents’ best-kept secret was their beliefs\, their language\, and their souls. This is me.’ \nThe event is organised in collaboration with the V&A on the occasion of the symposium Fluid Futures: Recalibrating Land and History in Global Eastern Europe (29th November\, V&A South Kensington). It also celebrates the recent publication of Bede’s monograph Porcelain and Wool (Hectic Books\, 2025). The book’s title symbolises a delicate balance—porcelain representing fragility and refinement\, while wool conveying warmth and resilience. Bede’s photographic style weaves together these contrasts\, employing intimate storytelling to question inherited cultural codes while reimagining her place within them. Her work captures a tension between pride and critique\, juxtaposing rural environments with modern elements to create an interplay between past and present that is is central to Bede’s practice. Through scattered vignettes of traditional motifs and reinterpreted family stories\, viewers are invited to assemble the fragmented pieces into a cohesive whole. \nAfter the conversation\, we are holding a casual meet and greet\, where attendees will have the chance to buy the book and get it signed. \nKincső Bede (b.1995) is a Hungarian visual artist from Romania\, who grew up in a small city in Transylvania. She is fascinated by the communist past of her homeland\, the power of the leader Nicolae Ceaușescu\, the control exercised by the security agency Securitate\, and how this history is passed down across the generations. Currently\, Bede lives and works in Budapest\, Hungary and she studied at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design. She is part of the Studio of Young Photographers. In 2020 she won the photography scholarship of the Association of Hungarian Photographers. In the same year she was among the winners of Carte Blanche Students\, a scholarship founded by Paris Photo. The works of the four winners were exhibited at the Parisian Gare du Nord. Her series\, titled ’’Three Colours I Know in This World’’ was chosen for the 10 New Talent 2020 programme by the curators of BredaPhoto Festival and was exhibited in The Netherlands. She has exhibited in several cities of Hungary\, Romania\, Slovakia\, Germany\, the Netherlands\, France\, Italy and the US. In 2021\, thanks to TOBE Gallery\, she exhibits at Unseen Amsterdam and she is selected for Paris Photo fair’s Curiosa sector\, curated by Shoair Mavlian. In 2022\, her photographs are exhibited at PhotoVogue Festival Milan. In 2023\, she participates in the show “Self on Stage” in Galeria Anita Beckers Frankfurt. Anthony Vaccarello curates an exhibition for her at Saint Laurent Rive Droite\, Paris and at YSL Beverly Hills LA\, and on the same occasion YSL publishes her fanzine. Bede is nominated for the Esterhazy Art Award and thus exhibits in Ludwig Museum Budapest. In 2024\, hECTIC bOOKs launches her first photobook\, displaying her œuvre to date. In 2025\, she presents her large-scale solo show: The Art of Pista in the frame of OFF-Biennale Budapest. The works of Kincső Bede are now part of collections of several important European institutions like: Victoria & Albert Museum – London\, Hungarian National Gallery – Budapest\, MODEM Center for Modern and Contemporary Art – Debrecen. Her photos are regularly in the printed press\, such as The Art Newspaper\, Vogue\, European Photography Magazine\, Another Man\, Der Greif\, Gup Magazine and The Steidz\, Hotpotatonews\, Grandmama’s Print etc. \nFrom 2020 she is represented by TOBE Gallery\, in Budapest. \nDr Catherine Troiano is Curator of Photography at the Victoria and Albert Museum\, London. She co-curates the programme in the V&A Photography Centre\, spanning the nineteenth century to contemporary and digital practices\, and has curated several displays in these major new spaces since the Photography Centre launched across two phases in 2018 and 2023. She was previously Assistant Curator of Photography at the V&A and Curator of National Photography Collections at the National Trust. She publishes and presents regularly on aspects of contemporary practice\, digital culture\, and photographic or institutional history\, and she holds a PhD in Visual Culture from the Photographic History Research Centre at De Montfort University\, Leicester.

SUMMARY:Jeremy Jeffs – Lives We Cannot Live
DESCRIPTION:Documentary film maker and photographer Jeremy Jeffs spent three years photographing and interviewing people with ME in their homes. Lives We Cannot Live reveals the hidden reality of living with the condition. \nCurated by Sebah Chaudhry and supported by the ME Association\, the exhibition sets out to bring visibility to a hidden and neglected community and encompasses environmental portraits\, collaged with diary notes and personal memories of before being ill\, selected from more than 50 cases. \nDiagnosed with ME as a teenager\, Jeffs shares the lived experiences of his sitters and captures an intimate side of life rarely witnessed even by close friends. Hidden symptoms mixed with a general lack of awareness make this a doubly invisible and isolating disease. \n“I started this project out of frustration and anger because in the almost four decades since my diagnosis nothing has really changed. We still don’t know much about ME\, there’s still a lack of proper funding for research\, no clear treatment\, and worse\, there’s still widespread misunderstanding about the illness\, even among some healthcare professionals.” \nAround 400\,000 people in the UK have this debilitating and as yet incurable illness. Symptoms include profound fatigue\, sleep disturbance\, post-exertional malaise\, cognitive difficulties and a range of other symptoms like pain\, headaches\, nausea and intolerance to lights and noise. \nLives We Cannot Live is the first large scale project to focus on ME and precedes the publication of a photo book with Fistful of Books later this year.
