SUMMARY:Blood of My Blood - Photography Exhibition by Magda Kuca
DESCRIPTION:Magda Kuca presents a body of work highlighting the shared histories of photography and medicine at the Old Operating Theatre. \nBlood of My Blood is a multi-faceted project that investigates the link between personal narratives and scientific advancement through a photographic lens. Kuca’s solo exhibition blends in with the surroundings at the former site of both herbal apothecary and early surgical procedures. \nAt the core of the project lies the artist’s response to her mother’s cancer journey. Applying a camera-less form of experimental photography to capture their embracing bodies\, Kuca expresses shared vulnerability while echoing the effects of chemotherapy with the marks and traces left on the resulting image. \nFor a series of wet collodion portraits captured on glass\, and limbs on surgery-grade steel\, Kuca allows the unvarnished surfaces to decompose and tarnish\, repairing deliberate fractures with silver. Still lifes of plague doctor masks provide a link to the healing herbs grown in the museum’s attic. \nThe contemporary works are displayed in cabinets alongside the museum’s main collection. Reminiscent of vintage medical journals\, they evoke a sense of nostalgia while highlighting subsequent progress in overcoming physical injury and infectious disease. \nThe surgeries at the Old Operating Theatre were performed on women without anaesthetics or antiseptics\, in front of a live audience of predominantly male medical students. Magda Kuca’s work serves as a reminder of the personal stories behind medical innovation. \npublic open times:\nThursday – Sunday\, 10.30am – 5pm\n(exhibition entry included in museum general admission)

Historian Milan Balaban situates the settlement within the global story of Bata cities\, while architectural historian Gillian Darley reflects on its significance for British modernism. Mick Pinion from the Bata Heritage Centre brings a local and heritage perspective on East Tilbury’s development and legacy\, and architect Ondřej Chybík discusses contemporary lessons for urban planning. Chaired by John Tusa\, the conversation links historical experiments to today’s questions of development\, identity and place-making. \nSPEAKERS:\nSir John Tusa is a British arts administrator\, author\, journalist and former presenter of the BBC’s Newsnight. Born in Czechoslovakia\, he moved to East Tilbury in 1939\, where his father was Managing Director of the British Bata Shoe Company factory. He is Co-Chairman of the European Union Youth Orchestra and was previously Managing Director of the BBC World Service and Director of the Barbican Arts Centre. He is the author of On Board\, Making a Noise and On Creativity. \nGillian Darley OBE is a widely published writer and historian who was President of the Twentieth Century Society from 2014 until 2021. She first visited East Tilbury\, in search of the Bata industrial village\, in the early 1970s\, when researching and photographing her first book\, Villages of Vision (1975\, reissued 2007). Ever since she has returned at regular Intervals. The village featured in her most recent book\, Excellent Essex (2019). In 2024\, Gillian achieved a longed-for aim\, a visit to Zlin. \nMilan Balaban is a historian specialising in business\, economic\, and industrial history\, with a focus on the global Bata Company network. He is a researcher at the Information Centre Bata\, Tomas Bata University in Zlín\, and a lecturer at Palacký University in Olomouc. His work examines industrialisation\, company towns\, and corporate mobility in Central and Eastern Europe. He has published several books\, including Bata across Continents (2022)\, and articles in leading journals\, and lectures internationally on multinational enterprises and industrial modernity. \n\nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBOOK NOW\n\nPart of the London Festival of Architecture. \nThe talk is an accompanying event to the exhibition Desire to Create: Baťa’s Architecture of Belonging\, presented at the Vitrínka Gallery\, running from 9 April to 12 June 2026.

SUMMARY:London Loo Tour
DESCRIPTION:It’s Not the Bog-Standard London Experience! \nPrepare to be immersed (metaphorically\, that is!) in a world where the humble toilet becomes a portal to explore history\, anthropology\, art\, architecture\, identity\, and of course\, our sense of humour. \nFrom the earliest latrines through to the future of flushing\, your guide will take you on a whirlwind tour through the history of Britain’s public toilets\, with plenty of interesting sights and practical tips along the way. You’ll answer all the questions you never knew you had… How did the Romans wipe their bottoms?  Was there really a man named Thomas Crapper? How long will you spend in the smallest room in a lifetime? And why do we even call it a loo? \nIt’s the perfect day out for anyone who likes to dive a bit deeper… lifelong Londoners and first time visitors alike! One thing is for sure: you may never think about a simple visit to the lavatory the same way again!

SUMMARY:Marmalade and Masquerades - Live Performance with Narration
DESCRIPTION:Marmalade and Masquerades \nAndré Caplet: Conte Fantastique (1922) after Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death\, for harp\, narrator and string quartet. Story adapted by Erin Muldoon. \nHerbert Chappell: Paddington’s First Concert (mid-1970s)\, arranged for the same ensemble by Roger Montgomery. \nTravel from the familiar warmth of 32\, Windsor Gardens\, home to London’s favourite bear\, into the shadowy world of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. This imaginative programme brings together two contrasting tales\, showing how music can express both light and dark\, comfort and mystery. \nThrough engaging live performance with narration\, children and families will discover how composers use sound to tell stories. Some feel cosy\, playful\, and curious. Others are dramatic\, eerie and full of suspense. Each invites listeners to picture characters\, places and emotions in their own way. \nOn one side\, Paddington Bear’s world is brought to life through music that celebrates kindness\, humour and small everyday adventures. On the other hand\, André Caplet’s Conte Fantastique draws us into a darker\, more mysterious atmosphere\, inspired by Poe’s haunting tale of Prince Prospero’s abbey. \nPlaced side by side\, these works reveal how music can spark imagination across very different moods and stories. Together\, they offer a rich and memorable introduction to the power of musical storytelling. \nTo Hire String Quartets  & Harpists in London for Private and Corporate Events\, visit Music for London.

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Zakia Sewell – Finding Albion – Myth\, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday 5th June at 7:00 pm at ICMP’s Queen’s Park venue for a special in‑conversation event with award‑winning writer\, DJ and broadcaster Zakia Sewell\, as she discusses her brand‑new book: \nFINDING ALBION – Myth\, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain \nIn this intimate interview\, Zakia will discuss her quest for ‘another Britain’. How she traversed the length and breadth of our island from Somerset to Scotland\, seeking out a different story – one that lies beyond divisive national myths and symbols. \nIn Finding Albion\, Zakia uncovers an alternative spirit of Britain that is vividly alive today. It is found in otherworldly folk songs\, ancient legends\, Celtic seasonal rites and mystic stone circles that punctuate our landscape. Her journey begins as the sun rises on the spring equinox over Glastonbury Tor\, where she meets neopagans reclaiming traditions from our pre-Christian past. At summer’s peak at Notting Hill Carnival\, she hears cultural echoes that passed along the slave trade routes from the Caribbean. On All Hallows’ Eve\, she encounters the ghosts of Empire that are still haunting the nation\, and in the depths of a Cornish winter\, she asks if today’s new folk revival could unite our increasingly divided country? \nFinding Albion brings a hopeful story of Britain out from the shadows\, giving us a deeper sense of who we are and heralding the promise of a brighter future. \nTickets available here – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-long-play-sessions-zakia-sewell-finding-albion-tickets-1988473699363?aff=oddtdtcreator \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nZakia Sewell is a writer\, DJ and broadcaster based in London. SUMMARY:Tales of Passion and Joy - Concert - Piano Quintets
DESCRIPTION:Vaughan Williams: Piano Quintet in C minor \nSchubert: Piano Quintet in A major D. 667 “The Trout” \nThis programme pairs the Piano Quintet in C minor by Ralph Vaughan Williams with the Piano Quintet in A major\, D. 667 (“Trout”) by Franz Schubert\, offering a focused exploration of how composers have reimagined the piano quintet across time. \nSchubert’s “Trout” Quintet (1819) is notable for its unusual scoring\, replacing the second violin with double bass. This creates a lighter\, more transparent texture and allows the piano to function as an equal partner rather than a dominant voice. The famous variation movement on his song Die Forelle reflects Schubert’s gift for lyricism and clarity of form. \nVaughan Williams’ Piano Quintet (1903) adopts the same instrumentation but produces a markedly different sound world. Richer and more expansive in texture\, it reflects his early engagement with late Romantic style alongside emerging traits of his mature voice\, including modal harmony and broad\, song-like themes. \nTogether\, these works highlight both continuity and contrast: a shared interest in instrumental balance\, but distinct approaches to texture\, form\, and pastoral expression. Schubert’s music evokes lightness and movement\, while Vaughan Williams offers a more reflective and spacious soundscape. Heard side by side\, they present the piano quintet as a flexible and evolving genre. \n  \nClassical Concert Pianists are available for private recitals in London & the rest of the UK via Music for London.
