The conversation will explore her remarkable career\, experiences of ageing in the public eye\, and the importance of challenging ageism across the music industry and wider society.\n\nThe event is intended to be the first in a series of Rock Against Ageism events\, with a number of other well-known singers already on board for future occasions…very exciting indeed!\n\nThe launch of the Rock Against Ageism events comes at an important time for the campaign against ageism. Recent research undertaken by Age UK London into the experiences of older Londoners found that almost half have experienced ageism\, while 60% are reluctant to challenge it. Older Londoners reported experiencing ageism in everyday situations\, including on public transport\, in shops and when accessing healthcare services such as GP surgeries and hospitals.\n\nRock Against Ageism aims not only to raise funds\, but also to use music’s power and influence to challenge negative stereotypes about ageing and promote a more positive\, inclusive view of later life.\n\nLiz Drury\, CEO of Age UK London\, said:\n\n“We are over the moon that Toyah has agreed to support us by speaking at this special event. Get ready for a night of songs\, stories\, and interactive music making\, with real dialogue between the stage and the audience\, all illuminated by immersive visual art from VJ Joe Walton. \nMakam Salam is a London-based collective of Pan-Middle-Eastern diaspora musicians. The band brings together Palestinian\, Israeli\, Iranian\, Lebanese\, Turkish\, Kurdish\, Tunisian\, Moroccan\, British\, and Jewish Diaspora musicians\, building bridges across cultures and playing for peace and collective liberation. Arabic\, Hebrew\, Turkish and Kurdish songs sit next to each other\, carried on oud\, clarinet\, violin\, keys\, drums and percussion. \nThis special night features Mira Awad\, a Palestinian-Israeli singer\, songwriter and actor\, born in the Galilee village of Rameh. In 2009 she represented Israel at Eurovision alongside Achinoam Nini. It was the first Israeli entry with Arabic lyrics\, and the first sung by an artist of Arab origin. Awad has performed with Bobby McFerrin\, Andrea Bocelli and Quincy Jones\, and appeared at Sanremo in 2025. \nFor the first time\, Makam Salam will be joining forces with the Jerusalem Youth Chorus Alumni Collective\, a shared choir of Palestinian and Jewish Israeli singers from Jerusalem. Their alumni collective\, called “A Different Way\,” will be part of the show. Together\, Makam Salam and A Different Way bring the audience into the music itself. Expect interactive song making\, live participation\, and real dialogue through music. \nSince forming in 2024\, Makam Salam have sold out Stone Nest\, PizzaExpress Jazz Club\, Next Door Records and The Cockpit. They have also played Shambala and Soul Revolution festivals this year. It explores what voices can do when freed from tradition\, combining experimental vocal techniques\, theatricality\, and improvisation into a bold and captivating live experience that reimagines the dynamics between singers and audience.

Originally conceived during the pandemic\, Like Lambs: To The Slaughter explores ever-more relevant questions around the human capacity for independent thought versus herd-like behaviour\, and the line between innocence and ignorance. \nTraversing the musical terrain between contemporary classical music\, soundscape\, post-bop and free jazz\, the music often reflects our frantic\, split-attention world where individualism reigns supreme\, but also represents a refusal to relinquish faith in the possibility of spiritual and intellectual enlightenment. Having started their journey in 2007\, Empirical continue to be at the centre of the UK jazz scene owing to their trademark combination of complex\, thoughtful writing and spontaneous improvisation reflecting years of collective music-making.

DESCRIPTION:Ankora @ankoramusic [EMERGENCE}Ankora is a London based\, eight-piece ensemble composed of Kezia Abuoma\, Tami Adebanjo\, Keira Chakraborty\, Hannah Clifton\, Klara Devlin\, Aleks Dimitrova\, Miranda Radford and Mali Sheard. Meeting at the hailed music organisation ‘Tomorrow’s Warriors’\, these ambitious young musicians were previously selected to perform as the band ‘Tomorrow’s Warriors Frontline’\, under the tutelage of acclaimed drummer and composer\, Romarna Campbell. Ankora is the exciting new step the ensemble are taking to launch into the London jazz scene. The name ‘Ankora’ is derived from the Latin word for ‘anchor’ (anchora): a symbol of groundedness\, hope and a connection to roots. These connotations are expressed through their repertoire of both originals and covers of powerful jazz tunes. The name links to an alternative meaning in Italian\, ‘again’\, marking the momentum of their rebirth as they continue their musical and artistic journey. \n\nThe band’s influences include the legacies of Freddie Hubbard\, Herbie Hancock\, Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter\, while branching out to the more contemporary mastery of Esperanza Spalding\, Geri Allen\, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts and Kenny Kirkland. The ensemble takes inspiration from the spark and power of these jazz legends\, compositionally and in their playing. Ankora have already made their mark on the jazz scene through performances at venues such as Love Supreme Jazz Festival\, We Out Here\, Cheltenham Jazz Festival\, The Vortex\, The Royal Albert Hall’s Elgar Room\, Brick Lane Jazz Festival\, Manchester Jazz Festival and The Jazz Café. Ready for more\, the unique\, powerful voice of the ensemble is excited to embrace the wonder and diversity of today’s jazz scene.\n\nNiklas Lukassen @niklas_lukassen (Solo)\nNiklas Lukassen displays an equally astonishing lyrical sensibility and skilful command on the upright bass\, the bass guitar and his unique bass cello. Having lived in New York for several years\, he today resides between London and Berlin. Described as “a versatile bass virtuoso” by Jazzwise magazine\, Niklas continues to establish himself as a significant presence within the young European jazz scene. Moreover\, his sound and artistic vision radiate a striking band leader potential. Niklas ventured from an inconspicuous village somewhere in the South German Black Forest out into a life of creative opportunity through his personal musical journey. Aged 16\, he moved to Berlin to cut his teeth in the capital’s music scene and attended the Jazz Institute. A formative part of his career lies in New York. Mentored by Ron Carter\, he received his Masters Degree from Manhattan School of Music on a full scholarship.  Currently Pursuing a doctoral degree and teaching at the Royal Academy of Music in London\, he researches ways of Broadening his scope of sounds on a range of String bass instruments.\n\nImmersed in contrasting musical worlds\, Niklas has accompanied performances with artists such as Kurt Rosenwinkel\, Joe Lovano\, Jorge Rossy\, Norma Winstone\, Jo Lawry\, Will Vinson & The New York Voices. Among the records he played on is the Grammy Award Nominated album Some days are better by the Kenny Wheeler Legacy Project. Niklas expands beyond his position as a bass player and composer through his singing voice. Notably\, he sang in the German National Jazz Orchestra. Niklas international quartet with saxophonist Ben van Gelder\, pianist Kit Downes and drummer Francesco Ciniglio\, fuses captivating individualists of the jazz scenes of Amsterdam\, London\, Paris and Berlin into one symbiotic musical organism. Enriched by musical contributions from guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel\, saxophonist Wanja Slavin\, vocalist Céline Rudolph & trombonist Geoffroy De Masure\, they explore unimagined depths on his Heartcore Records release Still Waters. He is also the creative mind behind the group ECHO\, which paints sonic landscapes in a poignant instrumentation. In this format\, Niklas embraces his penchant for lyric and songwriting\, while staying true to his nature as an improviser.  Furthermore\, alongside pianist Gwilym Simcock and drummer James Maddren\, he ventures on untrodden musical paths in his trio with himself on a unique and novel instrument: the bass cello. Niklas has toured extensively throughout Europe\, the UK\, North America\, Asia and North Africa. Notable stages he performed on include the Lincoln Center\, the Beacon Theatre\, the John F. Kennedy Center and the Berlin Philharmonie.

DESCRIPTION:Join Write & Shine bright and early\, live from The London Library for a 90-minute virtual writing workshop exploring London as a dark and gothic city. \nIn this workshop\, we’ll read fiction by London Library members Bram Stoker (1847–1912)\, whose Dracula stalks London’s fog-shrouded streets\, and MR James (1862–1936)\, whose ghost stories linger in the city’s corners. We’ll learn how Stoker used The London Library’s collection to research the novel\, conjuring his eponymous vampire from books he found in the stacks. And we’ll think about how London lends itself to gothic storytelling: a city of mist and mystery\, fog and flickering gaslight. \nThis workshop is part of a series of morning writing sessions led by author Gemma Seltzer\, inspired by The London Library’s rich literary heritage. Together we’ll uncover London as a secret city—a landscape of dreams\, disguises and shadows. \nWrite & Shine workshops take place in the early morning light – the best time to think\, dream and imagine!
