SUMMARY:Violet Hour x Distorted Frame present Surveillance Seance: Paranormal Activity + short film
DESCRIPTION:Violet Hour x Distorted Frame present \nSurveillance Séance: Paranormal Activity + My House Walk-Through (short film) \nParanormal Activity \n2007\, 86 min \nParanormal Activity places the haunted house at the centre of an act of self-surveillance. When Katie reveals to her boyfriend Micah that she has been haunted by an evil presence since childhood\, Micah employs an array of digital devices to try and record any strange events that might happen around their home. But when doors start slamming on their own\, a Ouija board spontaneously combusts and Katie appears to become possessed (caught in chilling time lapse)\, the couple may have got more than they bargained for. The capturing of these events gives the film a documentary feel\, but one wonders if the ghost is not just on screen but also in the machine. Oren Peli’s low budget chiller conducts a séance for the YouTube generation\, a conjuring of spirits in high definition\, offering proof that our collective fear of the unknown\, despite our technological progress\, is even more potent than ever. \nDirector: Oren Peli \nLanguage: English \n  \nThe film will be accompanied by: \nMy House Walk-Through \n2016\, 12 min \nDirected by visual artist and filmmaker PiroPito\, this atmospheric short film claims to be “not a horror video” but instead a simple visual tour of their own home. But what quickly emerges is an increasingly disturbing parade of grotesque images presented as a single\, unbroken take. As the camera tracks through an impossibly unending hallway\, this repetition of phantasmagorias builds to a haunting and ultimately tragic conclusion. A chilling example of “creepypasta” (scary stories presented online as real-life happenings)\, My House Walk-Through is an astonishing work of low-budget digital horror and a perfect companion piece to Paranormal Activity. \nDirector: PiroPito \nLanguage: Japanese (with English subtitles)

SUMMARY:Selected 15 at Somerset House - A screening of bold new artists’ moving image works from across the UK
DESCRIPTION:Selected 15 showcases a vibrant collection of new short films by some of the most exciting early-career artists working today\, nominated by the shortlisted artists of the Film London Jarman Award 2024. This compelling programme\, curated by videoclub and Film London Artists’ Moving Image Network (FLAMIN)\, tours leading arts venues across the UK. For over a decade\, Selected has offered a unique platform for discovering emerging talent\, with a focus on artists pushing the boundaries of what moving image can be. \nFrom a speculative oil rig ritual in the Scottish Highlands to the sonic echoes of South London’s buried waterways; from the intimate retelling of a mother-daughter memory to digital hauntings of racialised surveillance – this year’s works explore ecology\, mythology\, history\, and identity through experimental\, personal\, and poetic lenses. \nThe artists in this year’s programme are: Fergus Carmichael\, Jazmin Morris\, Kadeem Oak\, Liberty Smith\, Nia Fekri\, Niki Kohandel\, Samara Addai\, and Teef Chan. Expect a rich mix of storytelling and experimentation – intimate\, defiant\, and dazzling in scope. \nSelected 15 will be screened in London this year at Somerset House\, on Friday\, 13 June (430-830pm) and Saturday\, 14 June (2-7pm) on a rolling programme in The Pits. There will also be a panel discussion on Saturday at 445pm in the Lancaster Room! Full details with ticket links will be released soon. SUMMARY:The Kraken attacks Leicester Square
DESCRIPTION:London commuters got the fright of their lives this morning as The Kraken crashed through the ground into Leicester Square\, taking an innocent civilian hostage and dangling them 25ft in the air. \n  \nScreams and cries from the petrified mortal have been heard echoing around the square all morning\, and confirmed reports now reveal that they are trapped within a red telephone box that The Beast ripped from the ground in the early hours. There’s no saying how long the malevolent creature will remain\, but the captive continues to desperately beg for the public’s urgent help.    \nWhat can you do? Well\, the story goes that the only way to repel the darkness of The Kraken is for an army of brave souls to snap The Beast with their camera flash\, to deny it the darkness it craves… So locals\, tourists and commuters are being urged to head to the scene\, where mysterious black envelopes are being distributed\, each containing a reward for those brave enough to face The Beast.  \nCourageous souls will also be rewarded with two-for-one Kraken Perfect Storm cocktails at All Bar One\, Leicester Square.  \nThe Kraken’s attack on Leicester Square follows a string of sightings up and down the country where The Beast has caused untold terror in Glasgow\, Birmingham and Brighton. The legendary Bullring torn to shreds. The Duke of Wellington attacked in Glasgow. Even Brighton’s beloved pier has been smashed to smithereens. There’s no saying what or who The Kraken could destroy next if left to its malevolent devices. Please help! \nFor further information please head to @krakenrumuk on Instagram.

As their bond strengthens\, the children find the courage once again to feel the sun on their faces. \n\n\n\nIvan Ostrochovský\, Pavol Pekarčík\, Slovakia\, Czech Republic\, Ukraine\, 2023\, 71′\, English subtitles \n\n\n\nUK Premiere \n\n\n\nWinner of Europa Cinemas Label Award for the best European Film at the 2023 Venice Film FestivalThe Best Czech documentary award at the 27th Ji.Hlava International Documentary Film Festival\n\n\n\nWhen we arrived in Ukraine with humanitarian aid in the spring of 2022\, and settled into a life alongside the metro refugees\, we realized that the eyes of the world would be on the front line. That was why we decided to find something most closely approaching “ordinary life” and preserve it to the best of our abilities: to find a moment of genuine humanity at a time of devastating horror. We decided to juxtapose the timeless\, aimless life lived by Niki and his family with the chilling scenes playing out on ground level\, using the format of Super 8mm film footage. We’ve filmed observations of a war-ravaged country that might seem as the distant ideas of a traumatized child – a fever dream from times long past – if only the audience did not know that this was the reality of Ukraine nowadays.” Ivan Ostrochovský\, Pavol Pekarčík \n\n\n\nThe screening commemorates the two-year anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for peace and justice. \n\n\n\nAdmission: £5 (+Eventbrite fee)

SUMMARY:My Father\, the Prince + Q&A with Lila Schwarzenberg
DESCRIPTION:An intimate portrait of the relationship between Karel Schwarzenberg\, Chancellor to Václav Havel\, a key figure of post-November 1989 Czech politics and the head of one of the oldest and richest noble families\, and his daughter Lila Schwarzenberg. \n\n\n\nThe filmmaker\, who admits being afraid of her reticent and overpowering father when younger\, uses a camera to facilitate a difficult and long overdue father-daughter conversation daringly probing into their shared past and complicated relationship. Her story of a girl\, who resists convention and aristocratic protocols while growing up in a family tradition dominated by men and hereditary princes\, is woven into the story of her famous\, charismatic father whose childhood was marked by dispossession and expulsion\, and who despite all odds became a statesman\, head of Schwarzenberg family and revolutionary. Filmed over the course of five years in family residencies in Prague and Vienna\, and Orlik and Murau castles\, the originally envisaged documentary about Karel Schwarzenberg becomes a highly intimate portrait of two people who are both familiar and yet strangers trying to find a way to each other against the backdrop of a turbulent family history marked by turns of fate. \n\n\n\nLukas Sturm\, Lila Schwarzenberg\, Austria/Czech Republic\, 2022\, 79’\, in German with English subtitle
