SUMMARY:Evolution of the Hindi film hero
DESCRIPTION:Sanjay Suri\, author and Europe Correspondent for CNBC TV-18 argues in his new book that Gandhi has had an outsized influence on the portrayal of the “Hero” in Hindi cinema. Well-known films released between 1948 and 1959 show the ubiquity of this spirit of renunciation among the lead male characters of the era\, very much the product of Gandhi’s celibacy and austerity. His heroic retreat from wealth and sexuality was written into the cinema and then elaborately filmed shot by shot. Suri draws on numerous examples – from Mother India to Do Bigha Zameen; Shree 420 to Pyaasa; Sahib\, Bibi aur Ghulam to Guide; and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge to Lage Raho Munnabhai – to show how cinema was made within well-defined moral fences that were built with dos and don’ts about sex and money. \nThe average Hindi film protagonist in earlier decades was a lower-middle class\, upper-caste\, Hindu male. He was upwardly mobile\, yet had the ability to spurn wealth. He romanced the heroine\, but placed a high value on celibacy. But he says that in the 1990s and 2000s\, as economic growth increased\, and India became more outward-looking and strident on the global stage\, Gandhi’s austerity fell out of fashion\, and the way Indian cinema dealt with money and sex changed completely. \nWhether you’re a Hindi cinema fan\, a student of history\, or curious about the evolution of the Hero in cinema\, this will be an interesting evening with journalist and author Sanjay Suri. \nFollowing his talk will be a discussion with eminent personalities from media and film to discuss the evolution of the Hindi film hero\, including: \nSangeeta Datta\, well-known writer/director\, independent filmmaker and cultural commentator; Director\, Baithak UK\nMira Kaushik OBE\, one of the leading lights in South Asian Dance in the UK; Director\, Akademi

SUMMARY:13th Native Spirit Indigenous Film Festival - WIÑAYPACHA (ETERNITY)
DESCRIPTION:13th Native Spirit Film Festival 12-20 October celebrates UNESCO International Year of Indigenous Languages 2019 with a rare opportunity to see films by International Indigenous Filmmakers. \nFor Latin American House community members – Children and Parents \nIn partnership with Latin American House we curate a daytime programme to complement the in-house Spanish language classes for 4-12yr olds\, with interactive Storytelling sessions and a selection of film and animation Shorts in Native languages with Spanish / English subtitles. \nOpen to Public \n6.30pm WIÑAYPACHA (ETERNITY) \nWe are grateful to Mr Miguel Choque who has agreed to attend and discuss this Aymara film as an Aymara speaker \nDir. Oscar Catacora | 2017 | Aymara\, Peru | 86’ (Drama) \nNestled over 5\,000 metres above sea level a day’s journey from the nearest town\, the modest farmhouse near the peaks of the Andes is the only place Willka and Phaxsi have called home. Elderly\, more than eighty years of age\, but still mobile\, the couple tends to their beloved herd of sheep as they live a near-solitary existence of subsistence\, with only themselves and their animals for company. As the passage of time and circumstance leave their lives hanging in a fragile balance\, the couple yearn for their long-absent son to return home from the city. \nWiñaypacha is a deeply emotional experience and features stunning cinematography. This landmark film is the first feature filmed entirely in the Aymara language and has swept awards at festivals around the world. The story of Willka and Phaxsi (Sun and Moon in Aymara) will touch your heart and soul. \nNotes: Aymara is a testimonial language – the enunciation in the first person is inseparable from the whole and the environment. Language reinforces identity\, culture and worldview and environmental awareness. \nAWARDS & FILM FESTIVALS\n45 Official Selections and 16 Awards \nBest Film & Best Photography at Guadalajara Film Festival\, Mexico\nOfficial Selection at Mar del Plata Film Festival\, Argentina\nBest Cinematography at Hall of Light Film Festival\, Colombia\nSpecial Mention at Punta del Este Film Festival\, Uruguay\nSpecial Mention at Cine de las Alturas International Film Festival\, Argentina\nOfficial Selection at Festival international du film d’Amiens (FIFAM)\, France\nOfficial Selection at Vancouver Latino Film Festival\, Canada

Tickets available through Rich Mix. – \nSynopsis:\nIn the run-up to the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games\, Azzedine Nouiri\, the world champion in seated shot put\, inspires his childhood friend Youssef to take on the challenge of qualifying to the Games despite their lack of means and formal training. Through their uniquely moving and tight companionship\, We Could Be Heroes narrates the struggles of disabled outcasts longing to conquer the extraordinary in order to finally have the same rights and opportunities as ordinary men back home in Morocco. \nAbout the Director:\nBorn in Casablanca\, Hind Bensari grew up in London before quitting her job in an investment fund to move back to Morocco to produce and direct her first documentary\, ‘475: Break the Silence’ (2014). Entirely crowd-funded\, the film became an Internet sensation and won critical acclaim from The New York Times and ARD\, Germany’s first television channel. It broke audience records on 2M TV\, and has been distributed on channels worldwide including DR2 (Denmark)\, SIC Portugal and Planète Canada. A TEDx speaker\, Bensari graduated with a degree in Economics and Middle-Eastern Studies from Edinburgh University and holds a certificate in International Political Economy from the London School of Economics. \nThis event is 14+.\nRich Mix is wheelchair accessible. \nThis event has been made possible by the generous support of Arts Council England and Al Araby TV.

SUMMARY:The Process Trilogy
DESCRIPTION:An experimental trilogy of short films exploring audience manipulation and how our perceptions play into how we view art. Follow three seemingly separate stories: a horror film fan dealing with insomnia and ‘another self’\, an artist struggling with her masterpiece and two clowns who may never find the punchline. \nThese pieces centre around bittersweet comedy\, bleak surrealism and experimental filmmaking and mark the third creative project from ChewBoy Productions. They deal with the facts that we may never find happiness in our lives or our work\, and that ultimately\, we always end up back where we started. \nBefore the screening\, you’ll be invited to answer a series of questions. We’ll then put all the answers into our algorithm\, creating a truly individual cut of the films which will be representative of the room’s overall worldview\, perceptions\, personality and feeling on that day. You won’t interpret the films in the same way the person sat next to you will – they will all mean something different to you\, depending on who you are. \nGot it? Good. Let’s see what you’re really thinking. \nTo clarify – we will be screening the full trilogy at each individual screening time\, so you will see all 3 films in their entirety no matter which time-slot you book for.

DESCRIPTION:The Wild Pear Tree\nMon 22 Apr – Wed 24 Apr\nDoors: 7.00pm for 8.00pm\nSun 28 April (5.00pm for 6.00pm) \nNuri Bilge Ceylan’s latest film premiered in Cannes 2018 to huge acclaim: “Gentle\, humane\, beautifully made and magnificently acted movie” (The Guardian) “a lyrical\, tremendously acted drama of prodigal fathers and sons” (The Daily Telegraph) “A big\, bold masterpiece… his greatest work to date” (Little White Lies).\nSinan returns from his studies in the city of Çanakkale to his parents’ home in the small rural town of Çan. He hopes to publish a book of essays and short stories (or what he describes as a “quirky auto-fiction meta-novel”). But his teacher father Idris is an addictive gambler\, so much so that his mother and sister have become reluctantly accustomed to making do without food or electricity. So Sinan\, with his writing dreams\, worrying that we will be reduced\, after army service\, to teaching in the remote East\, wanders around town\, visiting his grandparents\, encountering old friends\, all the while looking for funding for his book.\nDir: Nuri Bilge Ceylan\nRun Time: 188 mins \nTrailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaiR3zdv5cU\n \n  \nKids Whirled: Paddington 2\nSat 27 April\nDoors: 10.30am for 11.00am start\nPaddington 2 honors its star’s rich legacy with a sweet-natured sequel whose adorable visuals are matched by a story perfectly balanced between heartwarming family fare and purely enjoyable all-ages adventure. \nDir: Paul King\nRun time: 103 mins \nTrailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52x5HJ9H8DM \n \n  \n\n\n \nFilms before this:\nAn Impossible Love\nMon 1 Apr – Wed 3 Apr\nDoors: 7.00pm for 8.00pm start\nSun 7 April (doors: 5.00pm for 6.00pm start) \nA semi-autobiographical novel is the basis of ‘Leaving’ and ‘Summertime’ director Catherine Corsini’s decades-spanning drama. Rising star Virginie Efira is superb as Rachel\, a young woman whose affair in the 1950s with a callous young man (Niels Schneider) results in the birth of a daughter and a relationship that continues across decades. \nBased on Christine Angot’s (co-writer of ‘Let the Sunshine In’) controversial novel\, Corsini’s impeccably directed and moving drama is beautifully made and stunning to look at.\nDir: Catherine Corsini\nRun Time: 130 mins \nTrailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAVJP9UdGP0 \n \nWhirled Docs: The Great Game\nThurs 4 April\nDoors: 7.00pm for 8.00pm start \nJon Beardmore\, 38 and frustrated with his 9-5 career\, makes a decision that will change his life forever. \nInspired by a game of cricket in Kabul\, Jon sets out on an extraordinary nine-month solo overland journey across Central Asia in a 20 year Landcruiser called Boris and only his mascot Kiwi Ted for company. And he sets off with one burning question in mind – is Central Asia really as dangerous as we’re led to believe?\nDir: Jon Beardmore\nRun time: 61 mins \nTrailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jUlenWQM0bk \n \nBurning\nMon 8 April – Wed 10 April\nDoors: 7.00pm for 8.00pm start\nSun 14 April (doors: 5.00pm for 6.00pm start) \nBased on a short story by Haruki Murakami\, this critically acclaimed South Korean film tells the story of Jong-soo\, a part-time worker who bumps into old neighbour Hae-mi. One day\, Ben visits Jong-soo with Hae-mi and confesses his own secret hobby.\nDir Chang-dong Lee\nRun time: 148 mins \nTrailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFKnOaJYwJI \n \nThe House By The Sea\nMon 15 April – Wed 17 April\nDoors: 7.00pm for 8.00pm start\nSun 21 April (doors 5.00pm for 6.00pm start) \nBy a little bay near Marseilles lies a picturesque villa owned by an old man. His three children have gathered by his side for his last days: Angela\, an actress living in Paris\, Joseph\, who has just fallen in love with a girl half his age and Armand\, the only one who stayed behind in Marseilles to run the family’s small restaurant. It’s time for them to weigh up what they have inherited of their father’s ideals and the community spirit he created in this magical place. The arrival\, at a nearby cove\, of a group of boat people will throw these moments of reflection into turmoil\nDir: Robert Guédiguian\nRun Time: 107 mins \nTrailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jrSIAwQNXw
