SUMMARY:Black Peter
DESCRIPTION:To commemorate the 90th anniversary of the birth of the Oscar-winning Czech filmmaker Milos Forman (Amadeus\, One Flew Over the Cuckoo´s Nest\, A Blonde in Love)\, the Czech Centre presents a new 4K restoration of his stunning debut feature film Black Peter which helped launch the famous Czechoslovak New Wave\, and was premiered at the Venice Classics in the 2017 Venice International Film Festival. \nSet during the a summer in early sixties Czechoslovakia\, Black Peter is a bittersweet comedy that revolves around shy Peter as he encounters the hypocrisy of the adult world in his first job at a small supermarket. Tasked with catching potential shoplifters Peter fails to work up the courage to intercept suspects to the exasperation of his boss. Being under constant pressure from his well-meaning but insensitive father\, Peter is similarly tongue-tied around the lovely Pavla\, focus of his erotic fantasies. Acute\, humorous observations\, Jiri Slitr’s rock’n’roll soundtrack and the use of non-professional actors helped Forman to capture not only the authenticity of everyday life under totalitarianism\, but also the feelings of eastern bloc teenagers in nascent rebellion on the cusp of the Prague Spring\, and to create an astute study of the generation gap. \nWinner at the 1964 Locarno International Film Festival \nMiloš Forman\, Czechoslovakia 1963\, 89 mins\, English subtitles\nCast Ladislav Jakim\, Pavla Martínková\, Jan Vostrčil\, Vladimír Pucholt

SUMMARY:Here Before Film Debut at Kiln Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Stacey Gregg’s debut feature film made waves at global festivals in 2021\, including SXSW and Galway Film Fleadh\, where it picked up the festival’s top prize.\nHere\, Irish Film London presents the film at The Kiln in Kilburn as part of an exclusive advance preview\, ahead of the film’s general release on Feb 18th. \nWhen a new family moves in next door to Laura (played by Andrea Riseborough\, who delivers a breathtaking performance) and her family\, their young daughter\, Megan\, quickly captivates her\, stirring up painful memories of her daughter\, Josie\, who died several years previously. \nSupported by a stellar cast\, including Jonjo O’Neill (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix) and Martin McCann (The Survivalist on Amazon Prime\, Calibre on Netlfix and last year’s Wildfire) Here Before is an assured psychological thriller with a third act reveal which is somehow much more disturbing than the supernatural set up that precedes it.

SUMMARY:Made in Prague: A Marriage - Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:A love against all the odds. Can a meaningful relationship be forged online\, disregarding borders\, age and cultural differences? \nStrong-willed\, charismatic Zdenka from the Czech Republic and Tabish\, an IT engineer from Pakistan\, met playing online games on Facebook\, became friends\, fell in love and married. Five years later\, they still live their married life on screen\, Skyping every day except for their annual three week holidays in Sri Lanka. Tabish is younger than wheelchair user Zdenka and the Czech authorities won’t accept theirs is a genuine relationship\, repeatedly refusing Tabish an entry visa. At the same time\, his own family remains suspicious of the relationship. After years of trying to prove their ‘real love’ to the authorities\, a breakthrough in their case gives Tabish and Zdenka new hope that their dream of living together could finally come true. Shot in traditional verité style\, the directors\, Czech Katerina Hager and Emmy award-winning Pakistani director Asad Faruqi\, capture the couple’s spontaneity and love while exposing the social prejudices of the digitally connected but divided world we live in. \nKaterina Hager\, Asad Farugi\, CZ/USA 2021\, 74’\, English subtitles \nPremiered at the 2021 HotDocs Festival in Toronto \nPart of 25 th Made in Prague Festival (7 November – 7 December 2021) \n  \n

SUMMARY:Made in Prague: Shadow Country - Movie
DESCRIPTION:A striking\, epic portrayal of life in a Czech-Austrian village pre\, during\, and post-war saw a small community sacrificed to political ideologies. \nThrough the fates of families and central figures in the fictional village of Schwarzwald\, Slama pieces together a bleakly powerful account of neighbours turning against neighbours\, of petty grudges and slights with deadly consequences. \nShadow Country celebrates the decency and common sense of the female characters: they are the chink of hope to which we cling in the face of the cruelty\, savagery and spiteful retribution meted out by the men of the village.\nWendy Ide\, Screen Daily \nA powerful and striking portrayal of a close-knit village community on the Czech-Austrian border between the 1930s and the 1950s where everyone must choose their allegiances when faced with shifting territories and conflicting ideologies. Marie\, a Czech\, is married to Karel\, an older German\, and lives a happy family life with quiet dignity and kindness. Persuaded by Karel\, she changes her nationality to German\, a decision they both regret when with the end of the war\, the village once again becomes Czech. Through the fates of individual villagers and their families\, Sláma\, inspired by a confirmed case of the execution of Germans\, builds a tale of life-long neighbours who turn from allies to enemies. Seen by the director as a celebration of female sensibility and sanity\, this is an epic film based on an excellent script filled with intimate intertwined stories\, stunning cinematography and nuanced acting. \nBohdan Sláma\, Czech Republic\, Slovakia 2020\, 135’\, English subtitles\nCast: Magdalena Borová\, Stanislav Majer\, Pavel Nový\, Barbora Poláková\, Csongor Kassai\nWinner of the leading Czech Film Critics Award and seven Czech National Film Awards.

SUMMARY:Made in Prague: My Sunny Maad - Movie
DESCRIPTION:When Herra\, a Czech woman\, falls in love with Nazir\, an Afghan man\, she has no idea about the life that awaits her in Afghanistan under US rule\, nor about the family she is about to join. \nWhile studying Economics in Prague\, blue-eyed\, blonde Helena falls in love with her schoolmate Nazir and moves with him to Kabul as his wife a few months later. She quickly assimilates into the family dynamics by changing her name to Herra and swapping a single western-style of life for her husband’s large family in post-Taliban Afghanistan. \n  \n \nShe adores the grandfather\, allies with her sister-in-law against her abusive husband. She supports her teenage niece\, who is to be married against her will\, striking a balance between the sheltered life of a married woman in a burka with her work for the US Embassy. But it is Maad\, an abandoned child who she and Nazir adopt\, who brings love and sunshine to her family. Leaving politics in the background while focusing on the family relationships\, Pavlátová uses her skills as an award-winning animator (1993 Oscar Nominee\, winner at the Berlin and Annecy Film Festivals) to bring the touching storey vividly to life\, letting Herra and Maad drive the narrative with their insightful matter-of-fact commentary. \nMichaela Pavlátová\, Czech Republic\, France\, Slovakia 2021\, 81 mins\, English subtitles\nFeature Films Annecy Film Festival 2021 Jury Award

SUMMARY:Made in Prague: Every Single Minute + Q&A with director Erica Hníková
DESCRIPTION:Are we doing enough or too little for our children? In this absorbing documentary\, Erika Hníková raises questions about children following hyper-competitive parents who devote all their time to maximising their son’s physical and academic potential. \nSwimming\, running\, piano lessons\, hockey practice\, endurance training\, bilingual language games\, bike riding and tennis; every possible exercise and training over and over again. This is the everyday reality for Miško\, a three-year-old boy whose loving and hyper-competitive parents devote all their time to making him a future top athlete and successful human being according to the principles of the Kamevéda childrearing method – a complex approach to developing a child’s motor abilities and intellect. In their attempts to maximise their son’s potential\, not one minute is wasted. A busy schedule doesn’t spare time for friendship and social interaction for either of them\, but Miško\, who is expected to excel in everything\, surpasses his academic and physical performance peers. Keeping her distance and leaving the audience to form their own opinion\, Hníková provokes discussion on the meaning of parenting today while following the family dynamic throughout the year in this absorbing documentary\, unique\, in-depth and focused. \nErika Hnikova\, CZ / SK 2021\, 80’\, English subtitles\nSpecial Jury Prize at the 2021 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival

SUMMARY:Sydenham Arts Film- Hunt for the Wilderpeople
DESCRIPTION:We’re Back! \nAfter a tough year for all you lovers of film\, the big screen is back\, and our film screenings kick off this summer with two cracking comedy masterpieces! \nIn June is Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)\, from mastermind writer and director Taika Waititi. After his Oscar win for Best Adapted Screenplay with Jojo Rabbit in 2020\, we’re revisiting one of his slightly earlier films\, following the rebellious escapades of the young Ricky and his foster Uncle\, ‘Hec’\, as they get into all sorts of trouble in the New Zealand Bush. \nTypical of Waititi’s style\, the film strings together a series of unforeseen events in a truly epic comedy\, but with plenty of heartfelt moments. \nWinner of a heap of film awards\, it is one of the great independent films of recent times\, and this timeless story of family\, feud\, and facing adversity will have you in stitches! \nAll our film screenings have been adapted to follow the latest government guidance on Covid-19 safety\, and as new announcements are made\, we will ensure you are kept up to date with the latest guidance for attending our screenings. \nPlease respect others and maintain social distancing wherever possible. SUMMARY:DROWNTOWN
DESCRIPTION:Barbican online world premiere and digital tour for gritty dance-theatre show \nDouble National Dance Awards nominee Rhiannon Faith’s new show DROWNTOWN holds a mirror to a society at tipping point and is now remodelled for online presentation \nIn choreographer Rhiannon Faith’s new show DROWNTOWN\, six strangers\, weighed down by individual darkness\, come to a deprived coastal land. Seemingly abandoned\, there is no one to help but themselves. Stuck between the remains of a broken community and the vast bleakness of the sea\, they struggle with isolation\, shame and failed support systems. \nDROWNTOWN’s live world premiere was set for June 2020 at London’s Barbican. In reaction to the pandemic Faith has teamed up with award-winning Big Egg Films to create a stunning multi camera film version of the show. \nBold and brave\, the show uses autobiographical testimonials and text to give voice to the vulnerable and unheard in Britain’s areas of social deprivation. With tenderness and honesty\, the show holds up a mirror to a society at tipping point. DROWNTOWN arrives to help save our world from drowning. \nRhiannon Faith explained ‘DROWNTOWN was made with a hope to heal a broken world. With the profound loneliness and isolation many have experienced during the lockdowns I really didn’t want to delay the opportunity for people to see it. As communities start to put their lives back together\, this show is asking that everyone is included in the process\, and there is authentic belonging for all.’ \nThe World Premiere will be hosted by London’s Barbican on 1 June 2021 at 7pm. Watch via the Barbican website at https://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2021/event/rhiannon-faith-company-drowntown-film\nJoin the creator/Director and cast on Facebook at 8:45 for a live Q&A after the show. \nThe Barbican will then host the film to watch on demand until 6 June. DROWNTOWN will then tour digitally through June with runs hosted by Cambridge Junction\, Gulbenkian Canterbury\, Ipswich Dance East and Harlow Playhouse. See a trailer here. \nIn the 2021 National Dance Awards Rhiannon Faith Company has been nominated for Best Independent Company\, and Rhiannon for Best Digital Choreography for her work on the DROWNTOWN ‘prequel’ DROWNTOWN LOCKDOWN.\nWatch the 17 minute film here. \nDROWNTOWN was named in the Evening Standard’s eight ‘Best dance shows to see in 2020’. \nIn The Observer dance critic and Killing Eve author Luke Jennings said of Rhiannon’s last show\, Smack That ( a conversation) ‘raw and eloquent with a final note of hope’ while The Guardian described it as ‘a party game to help change the world. The Stage hailed it as ‘Inventive\, demanding and immersive\, a work of urgent importance’ \n‘So many communities are broken\, people are drowning\, so something must be going wrong\,’ added Rhiannon. ‘Even Covid19 hasn’t really restarted the conversations with the wounds and emotions being effectively pushed down to the sea-bed. I want to reopen those conversations urgently’. \nPerformed by a cast of six (Shelley Eva Haden\, Donald Hutera\, Dom Coffey\, Sam Ford\, Marla King\, Finetta Oliver-Mikolajska) the show shines a light on individual suffering and discusses loneliness\, social isolation\, bereavement and suicide. Suitable for over 16s\, it contains strong language and scenes that some may find upsetting. \n1-6 June\nLondon Barbican Centre Silk Street EC2Y 8DS\n£pay what you feel\nhttps://www.barbican.org.uk/whats-on/2021/event/rhiannon-faith-company-drowntown-film \nRhiannon Faith Company is the sector leader in professional and participatory socially conscious dance-theatre that has a lasting impact on audiences and participants. SUMMARY:Adjust the Procedure
DESCRIPTION:Spin Cycle in association with JCS Theater Company presents The World Premiere of ADJUST THE PROCEDURE\, a new play by Jake Shore (The Devil Is On The Loose With An Axe In Marshalltown\, Holy Moly\, and Down The Mountain And Across The Stream) conceived during the pandemic and created with Zoom theater in mind. It’s early Fall 2020 and the pandemic consumes a Manhattan university. In addition to tracking rising cases of COVID on campus\, the school’s administrators face immigration problems\, suicide threats\, and professors losing their minds. But in the midst of all the madness\, it’s the internal bureaucratic battles that threaten the school’s preservation. \nOver the course of two conflict-ridden Zoom meetings\, ADJUST THE PROCEDURE gives audiences a rare peek into the business of higher education at a moment of multiple reckonings. “A couldn’t-be-more-timely play.” — Derek McCracken\, BroadwayWorld “As this play questions whether it is easier to ADJUST THE PROCEDURE or adjust reality\, it forcefully reminds us ‘When someone dies\, there are consequences.’ \nA timely play for troubled times. Well worth watching.” — Laurie Lawson\, Electronic Link Journey “Smartly tailored to its theme and era\, and the direction and delivery of its thought-provoking narrative pack a punch and leave us wondering what really drives our educational system and who benefits the most from it.” — Deb Miller\, DC Metro Theater Arts Written and directed by Jake Shore\, ADJUST THE PROCEDURE stars Ed Altman\, Adam Files\, Meagan Moses\, and Nicholas Miles Newton.

SUMMARY:Evolution of the Hindi film hero
DESCRIPTION:Sanjay Suri\, author and Europe Correspondent for CNBC TV-18 argues in his new book that Gandhi has had an outsized influence on the portrayal of the “Hero” in Hindi cinema. Well-known films released between 1948 and 1959 show the ubiquity of this spirit of renunciation among the lead male characters of the era\, very much the product of Gandhi’s celibacy and austerity. His heroic retreat from wealth and sexuality was written into the cinema and then elaborately filmed shot by shot. Suri draws on numerous examples – from Mother India to Do Bigha Zameen; Shree 420 to Pyaasa; Sahib\, Bibi aur Ghulam to Guide; and Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge to Lage Raho Munnabhai – to show how cinema was made within well-defined moral fences that were built with dos and don’ts about sex and money. \nThe average Hindi film protagonist in earlier decades was a lower-middle class\, upper-caste\, Hindu male. He was upwardly mobile\, yet had the ability to spurn wealth. He romanced the heroine\, but placed a high value on celibacy. But he says that in the 1990s and 2000s\, as economic growth increased\, and India became more outward-looking and strident on the global stage\, Gandhi’s austerity fell out of fashion\, and the way Indian cinema dealt with money and sex changed completely. \nWhether you’re a Hindi cinema fan\, a student of history\, or curious about the evolution of the Hero in cinema\, this will be an interesting evening with journalist and author Sanjay Suri. \nFollowing his talk will be a discussion with eminent personalities from media and film to discuss the evolution of the Hindi film hero\, including: \nSangeeta Datta\, well-known writer/director\, independent filmmaker and cultural commentator; Director\, Baithak UK\nMira Kaushik OBE\, one of the leading lights in South Asian Dance in the UK; Director\, Akademi
