DESCRIPTION:Unconventional opera company Gothic Opera returns to Battersea Arts Centre this Halloween\, this time with the UK staged premiere of Die Rheinnixen (The Nixies of the Rhine)\, an unjustly neglected\, Romantic work by Jacques Offenbach. \nDie Rheinnixen\, which is Offenbach’s first take on grand opera\, encompasses the growing nationalism of its time\, as well as the genre’s fascination with the supernatural. Gothic Opera is delighted to be staging this horror story for the first time in the UK. \nIn the capable hands of the award-winning international stage director Max Hoehn\, the evocative crumbling architecture of Battersea Arts Centre’s Grand Hall will be transformed into the time of the Weimar Republic\, a period of nationalism and unease. \nIn a bold production that will speak to our current times\, Gothic Opera will be joined by exciting conductor Hannah von Wiehler\, who has a very busy career across Europe. Leon Haxby\, the young composer whose previous work for the company was praised in Opera magazine for its “haunting magic” and “compassionate insight\,” has created a new chamber orchestration of the opera for seven instruments. DESCRIPTION:Having grown up in the small Latvian town of Dobele\, Kristine and Margarita Balanas moved to the UK in their teens. Since studying together at the Royal Academy of Music in London\, they have performed together at New York’s Carnegie Hall\, the Sydney Opera House\, Berlin Philharmonie\, and London’s Royal Albert Hall\, Barbican\, and Royal Festival Hall. \nThis performance\, their first since signing a record deal with Decca Classics\, is an intimate exploration of duet repertoire for violin and cello. Taking place in Newington Green’s iconic working people’s club The Mildmay Club\, the programme centres around compositions by Maurice Ravel and fellow Latvian Peteris Vasks\, complimented by new arrangements of George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi made specially for The Balanas Sisters. \nRavel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello features at the heart of the evening. Written in memoriam of Claude Debussy\, it finds common aesthetic ground with Vasks’ Castillo Interior\, a meditative and spiritual piece inspired by the writings of St Teresa of Ávila. It’s a journey of discovery that mirrors the sisters’ own path in music\, a theme of personal reflection which links together all the music in the programme at this one-off London show.

The collective has previously raised money for humanitarian aid for those suffering in Gaza and continues to support projects that foster community‑building and solidarity between Palestinian and Israeli youth. \nThe performance showcases the fusion of Middle Eastern languages\, artistry and cultures that is at the heart of Makam Salam. The evening features a diverse line‑up: Mira Awad (vocals)\, Tomer Eldor (piano and vocals)\, Oliver Kourosh Rutherford (drums and percussion)\, Olcay Bayir (vocals)\, Daniel Gouly (clarinet and bass clarinet)\, Shahd Karaeen (spoken word)\, David Mordechai (drums and percussion)\, Rita Issa (violin and vocals)\, Ofer Peled (flute and nay)\, Baha Yetkin (oud) and Giovanni Cresseri (electric bass). DESCRIPTION:Martin Hayes is regarded as one of the most significant talents to emerge in the world of Irish traditional music\, having founded the seminal Irish-American supergroup\, The Gloaming. The concept of Common Ground Ensemble\, his latest project\, emerged gradually in recent years while producing and curating concerts for various festivals\, often bringing together fresh collaborations and forming special ensembles for these events. \nMartin aimed to create an ensemble of musicians from different backgrounds who also have connections to Irish music – the common ground of their name. The line-up to compliment Martin on fiddle includes Cormac McCarthy (piano\, ‘Cottage Evolution’)\, Kate Ellis (cello\, Artistic Director of Crash Ensemble)\, Kyle Sanna (guitar\, a collaborator with Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile) and Brian Donnellan (bouzouki/harmonium/concertina\, and\, like Hayes\, an alumnus of The Tulla Céilí Band). \nCollectively\, they possess a wealth of talent spanning the worlds of traditional Irish music\, cutting-edge contemporary classical\, jazz improvisation and experimental music. In The Common Ground Ensembl\,e all of these genres are interwoven with the core elements of the tradition in a way that also gives each musician’s remarkable talents the space to shine. \nAfter sold-out shows at the Barbican\, EartH\, and Union Chapel\, Martin and the ensemble reunite for a one-off UK show to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in London. He adds\, “I want this to be the most fun I can have while I’m on stage.”

At a time when community can feel especially important\, we open our doors to everyone\, whether you observe Nowruz each year\, are discovering Persian culture\, holidays and traditions for the first time\, or just want to join in. \nEmbracing the arrival of spring\, Nowruz is a 14 day tradition enjoyed for more than 3\,000 years by over 300 million people worldwide\, particularly across Western Asia\, Central Asia\, the Caucasus\, the Black Sea Basin\, the Balkans\, and South Asia. Deeply rooted in Persian culture\, Nowruz is marked by renewal\, hope and time spent together with friends and family\, especially outdoors. The Nowruz festivities culminate after 13 days on Sizdeh Bedar\, also known as Nature’s Day\, during which people spend time picnicking outdoors to keep bad luck at bay. \nWaterlow Park\, with its secret enclaves\, ponds and myriad of trees (including a Persian Ironwood)\, brings to mind a Persian garden\, and has become an important and beautiful place for local families and friends to come together. For the third year\, we are bringing the festivities inside Lauderdale House under the guidance of our Artist/Curator Mehrdad Aref-Adib. Dunja\, a Serbian-Greek singer and actress\, moves seamlessly between theatre and music\, drawing inspiration from Maqam and jazz. Alexandra’s background in classical\, folk\, and experimental music has carried her from opera houses to underground scenes. Together\, they create a sound that is earthy\, timeless\, and steeped in tradition—stripped bare\, transformed\, and reborn through improvisation.

SUMMARY:Colin Blunstone: Believe In Miracles Tour
DESCRIPTION:Colin Blunstone\, lead singer of The Zombies and acclaimed Solo Artist\, returns to UK stages with the “Believe In Miracles” Tour\, his first national solo outing in 7 years.  The tour title is a nod to Blunstone’s 1972 hit “I Don’t Believe In Miracles” (penned by Argent singer/guitarist Russ Ballard)\, but is also a reflection on his remarkable 7-decade career.  Blunstone relates\, “I joined The Zombies as a teen\, thinking it would be a two or three-year adventure.  Never in my wildest dreams could I have imagined it would lead to a lifetime in music…and that at the tender age of 80\, I’d be the subject of a documentary\, recording a new album and embarking on a major tour!  His career-spanning show will feature classics from The Zombies\, favourites from his solo releases and collaborations\, and debut new material from his forthcoming studio album.   \nThe Bangles’ Susanna Hoffs said it best during her heartfelt speech inducting The Zombies into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in March 2019:  “Colin…your voice is just plain sexy!” \nThe world first fell in love with that mysteriously silky voice from The Zombies’ 1960s singles “She’s Not There”\, “Tell Her No” and “Time of the Season”.  The band’s untimely demise in late 1967 led Blunstone into a solo career which began in earnest with the release of the lush and string-laden One Year in 1971\, produced by former Zombies’ bandmates Rod Argent and Chris White\, which scored him a Top 15 UK hit with Denny Laine’s “Say You Don’t Mind”.  He has released 10 albums of his own over a period spanning more than 50 years\, including 1972’s Ennismore and 1974’s Journey\, and has lent his remarkable pipes to the recordings of many others\, most notably the Alan Parsons Project\, who featured Blunstone on their 1982 hit “Old and Wise\,” as well as on several albums.  \nA chance reunion with Rod Argent in 1999 brought about a 25-year resurgence for The Zombies\, prolifically touring the world and releasing new material.  In the midst\, Blunstone still managed to record three solo releases – The Ghost Of You And Me in 2009\, On The Air Tonight in 2012 and most recently\, the EP Less is More in early 2024\, a set of 5 sparsely-recorded demos showcasing those velvety vocals accompanied only by acoustic guitar. \nBlunstone celebrated his 80th birthday in June at the London premiere of Hung Up On A Dream: The Zombies Documentary\, the first-ever feature film chronicling the band’s journey from teenage friends to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees (now available on AppleTV and Amazon).   \nWith Argent’s retirement for health reasons in 2024\, Blunstone is refocusing on his solo career while also continuing to celebrate the legacy of The Zombies.  A new album is planned for release in 2026.
