SUMMARY:Gothic Opera presents: Die Rheinnixen
DESCRIPTION:Unconventional opera company Gothic Opera returns to Battersea Arts Centre this Halloween\, this time with the UK staged premiere of Die Rheinnixen (The Nixies of the Rhine)\, an unjustly neglected\, Romantic work by Jacques Offenbach. \nDie Rheinnixen\, which is Offenbach’s first take on grand opera\, encompasses the growing nationalism of its time\, as well as the genre’s fascination with the supernatural. Gothic Opera is delighted to be staging this horror story for the first time in the UK. \nIn the capable hands of the award-winning international stage director Max Hoehn\, the evocative crumbling architecture of Battersea Arts Centre’s Grand Hall will be transformed into the time of the Weimar Republic\, a period of nationalism and unease. \nIn a bold production that will speak to our current times\, Gothic Opera will be joined by exciting conductor Hannah von Wiehler\, who has a very busy career across Europe. Leon Haxby\, the young composer whose previous work for the company was praised in Opera magazine for its “haunting magic” and “compassionate insight\,” has created a new chamber orchestration of the opera for seven instruments. A cast of talented singers will bring the characters and story to life. \nDie Rheinnixen performance details:\n30th October\, 7.30pm\n31st October\, 7.30pm\n1st November\, 7.30pm\n2nd November\, 5.00pm \nSung in German with English surtitles.

SUMMARY:Easter Uprising: Urvashi
DESCRIPTION:Urvashi is an independent London-based collective\, formed in January 2023. Inspired by the band’s shared love for traditional and modern music\, they draw equally from Indian Qawwali\, Arabic Tarab\, modal jazz and hard rock. \nTheir tracks layer both original melodies and fresh interpretations of traditional songs\, over grooves reimagined from different musical backgrounds\, combined with extensive improvisation. \nIn recent months\, Urvashi has been undertaking significant artistic development\, investigating how their love of modal jazz and devotional music traditions can engage with UK rave culture\, specifically drum and bass and techno. Drawing inspiration from artists who bridge electronic and jazz traditions\, the collective is developing an entirely new performance practice that translates electronic dance music into improvisation-led formats.

SUMMARY:Jazz in the House: Maydan Ensemble
DESCRIPTION:The Maydan Ensemble traverses international bounds and genres\, creating an inclusive and irresistible sound that blends modern jazz with Arabic\, Anatolian and Persian folk music.\nThe Maydan Ensemble of the North London Jazz Collective is a fully international quintet comprising some of London’s busiest jazz musicians: the rising-star vocalist Amena from Egypt\, acclaimed Irish-Iranian jazz guitarist Kourosh Kanani\, Italian-English bassist and stalwart of the London jazz scene Lorenzo Morabito\, Londoner Robbie Ellison on drums and one the finest Iranian folk musicians in London\, Parham Bahadoran on reeds (zurna\, duduk and clarinet). \n‘Maydan’ means ‘town square’ or ‘public meeting place’. Originating in Farsi\, the word is now used across Arabic\, Turkish\, Urdu\, Kurdish\, Georgian and Ukrainian. The name reflects the group’s belief that music\, like the town square\, is where cultures meet — rooted in communal life and shared experience\, with the power to connect and\, at times\, quietly challenge. \nTheir repertoire explores the meeting point between jazz and Middle Eastern musical traditions from two directions: jazz standards inspired by West Asia\, and the group’s own jazz-inflected arrangements of Arabic\, Anatolian and Persian folk songs. \nHaving formed at the start of 2025\, the Maydan Ensemble have wowed audiences\, selling out multiple venues across UK and beyond\, including Palestine House and the Green Note\, as well as recently headlining Zeman World Music Festival in Serbia. \n  \nPerformers\n\nAmena – vocals\nParham Bahadoran – duduk / clarinet / vocals\nKourosh Kanani – guitar\nRobbie Ellison – drums\nLorenzo Morabito – bass \n\nTickets \n\nStandard £15.50\nUnwaged Concession £12.50\nUnder 35s Concession £8\n\nPlease note that all tickets\, including tickets purchased on the door\, are subject to a £1.50 booking fee.

SUMMARY:KEIJI HAINO - Concert
DESCRIPTION:Upset The Rhythm presents… \nKEIJI HAINO\nTuesday 17 March\nICA\, The Mall\, London\, SW1Y 5AH\n7.30pm | £25 | Tickets: https://link.dice.fm/V8e7432de701 \nKEIJI HAINO was born in Chiba\, Japan\, on May 3\, 1952. Inspired by Antonin Artaud\, he aimed for the theatre\, but an encounter with The Doors stimulated him into music\, where he has examined and absorbed a wide range of expressions from the early blues\, especially Blind Lemon Jefferson\, or European medieval music\, to popular songs across the world.  In 1970\, he joined a group\, Lost Aaraaf\, named after Edgar Allan Poe’s poem\, as a vocalist. Meanwhile\, he started to work on home recordings and learned the guitar and percussion autodidactically. In 1978\, Haino formed a rock band Fushitsusha\, and since 1988\, after a recuperation period from 1983 to 1987\, he has been internationally active in various forms including solo\, groups such as Fushitsusha\, Nijiumu\, Aihiyo\, Vajra\, Sanhedrin\, Seijaku\, Nazoranai or The Hardy Rocks and DJ as “experimental mixture\,” as well as in collaboration with artists from different backgrounds\, drawing the performance of the guitar\, percussion\, hurdy gurdy\, string instruments\, wind instruments\, local instruments from across the world and DJ gears to the extreme through idiosyncratic techniques. Haino has released more than 200 recordings and performed live at least 2\,000 times. \nIn March 2026\, Japan\, Haino will present two exclusive performances in Europe on polygonola\, a metal-flat polygonal instrument\, based on the 2nd dimensional vibration theory\, built by Naoki Skura. One of these performances will take place at the ICA on March 17th. \nhttps://keijihaino.bandcamp.com \n“Keiji Haino towers over the Japanese underground: his colossally heavy guitar excursions inspired a whole generation of psychedelic rockers\, but his omnivorous musical appetites have also seen him collaborate with jazz musicians\, branch out into DJing\, and play an entire gamelan orchestra single-handedly. There’s no knowing what to expect from a Haino gig” – Time Out Tokyo \n“Keiji Haino lives among the class of improvisers who roam so far from what we usually call form — meaning\, basically\, rules — that they make you question whether what they’re doing is music.” – New York Times \n

SUMMARY:Joseph Tawadros: live in London
DESCRIPTION:Cairo-born\, 8-time ARIA-award winner Joseph Tawadros is one of the world’s masters of his chosen instrument\, the oud – an Arabic lute-type fretless stringed instrument\, the ancestor of the Western lute and modern guitar. \nA virtuoso of diversity and sensitivity\, Joseph performs in concert halls worldwide and is known for his brilliant technique\, deep musicianship\, storytelling and joyous style of performance. For this rare solo performance in the UK\, Joseph will present an exciting programme of original music. His compositions draw inspiration from the Arabic modal system (maqam) and blend it seamlessly with elements of Western classical\, jazz\, world\, folk\, and even metal and bluegrass. \nRanging from thrilling\, furiously paced numbers to beautifully introspective and tranquil pieces\, the program is woven together by Joseph’s trademark lyricism and the striking contemporary musicality of his oud. \n  \nHire Oud Players in London

SUMMARY:Martin Hayes: live at KOKO
DESCRIPTION:Martin Hayes is regarded as one of the most significant talents to emerge in the world of Irish traditional music\, having founded the seminal Irish-American supergroup\, The Gloaming. The concept of Common Ground Ensemble\, his latest project\, emerged gradually in recent years while producing and curating concerts for various festivals\, often bringing together fresh collaborations and forming special ensembles for these events. \nMartin aimed to create an ensemble of musicians from different backgrounds who also have connections to Irish music – the common ground of their name. The line-up to compliment Martin on fiddle includes Cormac McCarthy (piano\, ‘Cottage Evolution’)\, Kate Ellis (cello\, Artistic Director of Crash Ensemble)\, Kyle Sanna (guitar\, a collaborator with Edgar Meyer and Chris Thile) and Brian Donnellan (bouzouki/harmonium/concertina\, and\, like Hayes\, an alumnus of The Tulla Céilí Band). \nCollectively\, they possess a wealth of talent spanning the worlds of traditional Irish music\, cutting-edge contemporary classical\, jazz improvisation and experimental music. In The Common Ground Ensembl\,e all of these genres are interwoven with the core elements of the tradition in a way that also gives each musician’s remarkable talents the space to shine. \nAfter sold-out shows at the Barbican\, EartH\, and Union Chapel\, Martin and the ensemble reunite for a one-off UK show to celebrate St Patrick’s Day in London. He adds\, “I want this to be the most fun I can have while I’m on stage.”
