DESCRIPTION:You stand in a dark room\, swirling ice in an empty glass\, wondering if the frosty feeling in your heart will ever thaw.A shadowy silhouette shrouded in purple light approaches you.Their voice is soft and low; the velvet grace of the words\, the transcendent covenant\, is just a sketch of the things to come. \nYour pulse quickens\, and the breath catches on your lips. \n \nThe Poetry Brothel is an immersive and captivating performance that aims to revive poetry as a communal experience reminiscent of ancient rituals and ceremonies. Its rotating cast of poets adopts unique personas to cater to different poetic tastes. SUMMARY:The Thin Veil of London
DESCRIPTION:An unusual walk around the lesser-known corners of Holborn and Bloomsbury\, interwoven with mysteries from the stories of Arthur Machen. \n\n\n\n‘The best-guided walk I’ve ever been on.’ – Matt Brown\, Londonist \n\n\n\nThe stories of Arthur Machen (1863-1947) teem with sinister ancient pre-Christian horrors – troglodyte races and malevolent fauns – that lurk just beneath the surface of modern life. Yet for Machen\, these folklore evils were the flip side of a positive theology that invited the visionary to step through the veil of illusion into another world; a magical world. Sometimes the veil is lifted on ancient tumuli in the Welsh countryside of his childhood; often\, it can be found in a back street in London. \n\n\n\nThe Thin Veil of London takes up this theme. Much more than an ordinary tour\, it is a journey into the silent corners of Holborn and Bloomsbury. It is a journey into the worlds of Faery and science\, madness and ecstasy\, and what Machen called ‘the eternal beauty hidden beneath the crust of common and commonplace things; hidden and yet burning and glowing continually if you care to look with purged eyes’. \n\n\n\nThe walk begins in The Queen’s Larder pub in Bloomsbury and ends at another in the same area. See the Minimum Labyrinth website for more details.

SUMMARY:Kateřina Tučková: The Last Goddess
DESCRIPTION:Kateřina Tučková\, leading Czech writer and 2022 winner of The State Award for Literature\, discusses with scholar Dr Rajendra Chitnis The Last Goddess\, her award-winning novel and most successful book to date with more than 100\,000 copies sold in the Czech Republic alone\, which has finally been published in English. Based on extensive historical research and powerful storytelling\, the novel traces a community of ‘goddesses‘\, female healers in the White Carpathians\, pursued by both Nazis and Communists. Masterfully weaving together fact\, folklore\, and fiction and oscillating between past and present while exploring the extraordinary history of goddesses\, Tučková incisively and with great panache comments on Czech society throughout the 20th century.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA book launch and conversation with Katerina Tučková and Dr Rajendra Chitnis\n\nKateřina Tučková is a leading Czech writer\, playwright\, art historian and curator. She has written four books published in twenty two languages. More than 300\,000 copies of her books have been sold in the Czech Republic alone. Her novel Gerta / Vyhnání Gerty Schnirch  won the Magnesia Litera Readers’ award and was shortlisted for the Jiří Orten Prize and the Josef Škvorecký Prize in 2010. The Last Goddess / Žítkovské bohyně won the Josef Škvorecký Award and the Czech Bestseller Prize in 2012 and the Magnesia Litera Readers‘ Award and the Czech Book Prize Readers‘ Award in 2013. In 2017\, she was given the Freedom\, Democracy and Human Rights Award by the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes and received the Premio Salerno Libro d’Europa. In 2022 Katerina Tučkova was awarded The State Prize for Literature for the novel Bílá Voda (The White Water). www.katerina-tuckova.cz\n\nRajendra Chitnis is associate professor of Czech at the University of Oxford. Alongside the books Literature in Post-Communist Russia and Eastern Europe\, Vladislav Vančura: The Heart of the Czech Avant-garde and the edited volume Translating the Literatures of Small European Nations\, he has published numerous studies about twentieth- and twenty-first-century Czech literature and contributed afterwords to English translations of novels by Antonín Bajaja\, Jaroslav Durych\, Viktor Dyk\, Ladislav Fuks\, Daniela Hodrová\, Josef Jedlička and others.\n\nKateřina Tučková: The Last Goddess\nTranslated by Andrew Oakland\nPublished by Amazon Crossing\, 2022\nThe book has been adapted for the stage by the Zlín City Theatre\, the Brno City Theatre\, and the Divadlo pod Palmovkou Theatre\nTranslated into twenty languages\n\nOnce upon a time\, a group of women with extraordinary abilities lived high in the hills of the White Carpathians. They knew how to heal people and help them in misery\, they knew how to cope with trouble\, and they could see the future. The so-called Žítková goddesses passed down their abilities from generation to generation. Dora Idesová is the last member of their family. She did not learn their art\, but studied ethnography and decided to write an extensive scientific study about them. In the late 1990s\, she discovered an operative file on an “internal enemy of the state” – her aunt\, goddess Surmena. The file was created by the StB (the State Security)\, and kept in the archives of the Ministry of the Interior. Dora discovers the fate of the women from the village of Žítková and is surprised to find out that although she did not become a goddess herself\, she is also an integral part of the secret traditions.

British citizens\, white and non-white\, were interned in the Ruhleben camp near Berlin as a retaliatory measure\, bringing the global experience of internment back to the German home front as well and for civilian internees across the world\, long periods of isolation caused mental health problems in the form of the ‘barbed wire disease’. Humanitarian support came from the Spanish and the Swiss governments\, as well as the Red Cross. The exhibition focuses on these global themes\, opening up new perspectives and formats for presenting the history of wartime internment. Alongside eighteen panels\, a Virtual Reality Experience will give viewers an immersive experience of Fort Napier Camp in South Africa. \nSymposium and exhibition opening: \n5.00 – 5.05 Welcome GHIL\, Christina von Hodenberg \n5.05 – 5.15 Internment in the British Empire\, Panikos Panayi \n5.15 – 5.25 Race and Internment: the Ruhleben camp near Berlin\, Michelle Kiessling \n5.25 – 5.35 Mental Health and Internment\, Matthew Stibbe \n5.35 – 5.45 Internment in Switzerland\, Susan Barton \n5.45 – 5.55 Spanish humanitarian efforts\, Marina Perez de Arcos \n5.55 – 6.00 Presenting internment in Virtual Reality\, Stefan Manz\, Paul Long \n6.00 – 6.30 Discussion \n6.30 – 8.00 Exhibition viewing and Virtual Reality demonstration \nBehind the Wire and Virtual Reality Experience exhibition will be shown in the German Historical Institute London until 30 June 2023. SUMMARY:Poetry meets visual arts: Book launch with Pavla Melková and Antony Gormley
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating the bilingual publication of The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible\, Czech poet and architect Pavla Melková and leading British sculptor Antony Gormley meet on stage to continue an artistic dialogue that started six years ago in Prague when they first met\, and the idea of a joint book was born. In The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible Pavla\, Melková’s poetry meets Antony Gormley’s drawings\, circling the same centre and unfolding from the same horizon in their search for the essence of life\, to emerge in a common language. \n\n\n\nAntony Gormley’s images and a staged reading of Pavla Melková’s poems by translator and poet Joshua Mensch will accompany the launch of this bilingual edition. \n\n\n\nFollowed by audience Q&A and a book signing. \n\n\n\nPAVLA MELKOVÁ is a practising architect\, visual artist\, poet and writer who regularly lectures on art and architecture. Her widely-recognized architecture is visible throughout the Czech Republic\, where she has won numerous awards\, including Architect of the Year (2014)\, the Prague Mayor’s Prize (2012)\, and the National Prize for Architecture (2012). She has published seven books on architecture\, including most recently\, The Humanistic Role of Architecture (2016) and The Architecture of Reciprocity (2020). She is a regular contributor to professional architecture journals\, anthologies\, and collaborative works. Her two volumes of poetry include The Edges of the Day (2017) and Inner Time (2019). In 2012\, she founded the Office for Public Space at the Institute for Planning and Development of the City of Prague (IPR)\, which she headed until 2017. She is a member and vice-chair of the Gremial Council of IPR and is a partner at the architecture firm MCA atelier\, which she co-founded. In 2015\, she founded the course Concept and Interpretation at the Faculty of Architecture\, where she teaches. \n\n\n\nANTONY GORMLEY is widely acclaimed for his sculptures\, installations and public artworks investigating the human body’s relationship to space. His work has developed the potential opened up by sculpture since the 1960s through a critical engagement with both his own body and those of others in a way that confronts fundamental questions of where human being stands about nature and the cosmos. Gormley continually tries to identify the space of art as a place of becoming in which new behaviours\, thoughts and feelings can arise. Gormley’s work has been widely exhibited throughout the UK and internationally. A major solo exhibition of his work was presented at the Royal Academy of Arts\, London\, in September 2019. Permanent public works include the Angel of the North (Gateshead\, England)\, Another Place (Crosby Beach\, England)\, Inside Australia (Lake Ballard\, Western Australia)\, Exposure (Lelystad\, The Netherlands) and Chord (MIT – Massachusetts Institute of Technology\, Cambridge\, MA\, USA). \n\n\n\nGormley was awarded the Turner Prize in 1994\, the South Bank Prize for Visual Art in 1999\, the Bernhard Heiliger Award for Sculpture in 2007\, the Obayashi Prize in 2012 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2013. In 1997 he was made an Officer of the British Empire (OBE) and a knight in the New Year’s Honours list in 2014. He is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects\, an Honorary Doctor of the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Trinity and Jesus Colleges\, Cambridge. Gormley has been a Royal Academician since 2003. \n\n\n\nJOSHUA MENSCH is a poet and translator based in the Czech Republic. He is the author of Because. A Lyric Memoir (W. W. Norton\, 20218). He has served as an editor of B O D Y since 2012. \n\n\n\nThe Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible is a discourse between the languages of poetry and the visual arts. The book captures a dialogue between leading British sculptor Anthony Gormley and Czech poet Pavla Melková. The lines made by the words in the poems and lines of the drawings are traces that bring closer the shape of the essence – the essence of the world\, our lives\, relationships\, and situations. The strokes of the words of the poetry and the strokes of the lines of the drawings circle the same centre and unfold from the same horizon. When the marks cross paths\, the shape becomes more and more evident. Absorbed in the strokes and with developing awareness\, one mutual language emerges. This establishes the meaning of their encounter. \n\n\n\nThe Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible\, Pavla Melková and Antony Gormley\, Prague: Kant\, 2022\, English and Czech\, Hardback; 136 pages\, 245 × 165 mm\, ISBN 978-80-7437-376-3 \n\n\n\nCover image: The Gravitational Field of the Inexpressible (book cover); Pavla Melková; Antony Gormley (photo: Lars Gundersen)

SUMMARY:Ethical Matters: How Great Novels Help Us Change
DESCRIPTION:What can Alice in Wonderland teach us about childhood? Could reading Conversations with Friends guide us through first love? Does Esther Greenwood’s glittering success and subsequent collapse in The Bell Jar help us understand ambition? And what can we learn about death from Virginia Woolf? \n\n\n\nLiterature matters. Not only does it provide escapism and entertainment\, but it also holds a mirror up to our lives to show us aspects of ourselves we may not have seen or understood. From jealousy to grief\, fierce love to deep hatred\, our inner lives become both stranger and more familiar when we explore them through fiction. \n\n\n\nJosh Cohen delves deep into the inner lives of the most memorable and vivid characters in literature. His analysis of figures such as Jay Gatsby and Mrs Dalloway offers insights into the greatest questions about the human experience\, ones that we can all learn from. He walks us through the different stages of existence\, from childhood to old age\, showing that literature is much more than a refuge from the banality and rigour of everyday life – through the experiences of its characters\, it can show us ways to be wiser\, more open and more self-aware. \n\n\n\nJosh Cohen is Professor of Modern Literary Theory at Goldsmiths\, University of London and a psychoanalyst in private practice. He is the author of books and articles on modern literature\, cultural theory and psychoanalysis\, including How to Read: Freud\, The Private Life: Why We Remain in the Dark\, and Not Working. His book How to Live. What To Do. How great novels help us change will be available on the day.

SUMMARY:Ear – the book behind a Czech film legend
DESCRIPTION:A book launch & film screening of the Czech film classic Ear.\n \nTo mark the publishing of a first English translation of Jan Procházka’s masterpiece Ear\, David Vaughan and Peter Hames discuss both the book and the film\, followed by a screening of the 1970 classic\, considered one of the greatest of all Czech films. \nThe Ear – Ucho in Czech – was the culmination of ten years of fruitful cooperation between the director Karel Kachyňa and screenwriter Jan Procházka. It is set in the period of the Stalinist purges in 1950s Czechoslovakia. A senior government official Ludvík and his wife Anna come back from a drunken party at the ministry to find that their house has been bugged. A gripping psychological drama follows\, as they await a knock on the door. \nThe novella Ear is perhaps Jan Procházka’s greatest work. He was one of the most popular and prolific Czech writers of the 1960s\, closely identified with the reforms and growing artistic freedoms of the time. It combines the economy of Hemingway with the tension of Hitchcock\, set in a stifling totalitarian environment. \nFor the first time Ear has been published in English – by Karolinum Press in a translation by Mark Corner. \nDavid Vaughan\, who wrote the afterword to the new edition\, is a writer\, broadcaster\, journalist and university lecturer. \nPeter Hames is a film historian and Visiting Professor in Film Studies at Staffordshire University.

SUMMARY:Women and Walking: Wanderers and Psychogeographical Pilgrimage
DESCRIPTION:Women walk. Kerri Andrews discusses her book\, ‘Wanderers’\, about ten women who have found walking essential to their sense of themselves. Sonia Overall takes the path of the lone woman walker\, seeking out ‘thin places’ where past and present collide and where new ways of living might begin. \nWanderers: Walking Women \nKerri Andrews discusses her book\, Wanderers\, about ten women over the past three hundred years who have found walking essential to their sense of themselves\, as people and as writers. Wanderers trace their footsteps from eighteenth-century parson’s daughter Elizabeth Carter – who desired nothing more than to be taken for a vagabond in the wilds of southern England – to modern walker-writers such as Nan Shepherd and Cheryl Strayed. For each\, walking was integral\, whether it was rambling for miles across the Highlands\, like Sarah Stoddart Hazlitt\, or pacing novels into being\, as Virginia Woolf did around Bloomsbury.Offering a beguiling view of the history of walking\, Wanderers guides us through the different ways of seeing – of being – articulated by these ten path-finding women. \nKerri is Senior Lecturer in English Literature at Edge Hill University. She writes about literary history\, particularly untold or forgotten histories\, and has published widely on women’s writing. Her book\, Wanderers: A History of Wanderers: A History of Women Walking\, is published by Reaktion Books. Kerri is also one of the leaders of Women In The Hills\, an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project aimed at exploring the factors enabling and inhibiting women’s access to upland landscapes. The project brings together people from all areas of walking\, mountaineering\, land access\, and management to drive change in women’s access and experiences. \nPsychogeographical Pilgrimage – Seeking Thin Places \nSonia Overall takes to the old pilgrim roads\, navigating a route from Canterbury to Walsingham via London and her hometown of Ely. Vivid in her evocation of a landscape of ancient chapels\, ruined farms\, and suburban follies\, Overall’s secular pilgrimage elevates the ordinary\, collecting roadside objects – feathers\, a bingo card\, a worn penny – as relics. Facing injury and interruption\, she takes the path of the lone woman walker\, seeking out ‘thin places’ where past and present collide and where new ways of living might begin. \nSonia Overall is a writer\, psychogeographer\, and Senior Lecturer at Canterbury Christ Church University\, where she runs the MA in Creative Writing. Her publications include the novels A Likeness and The Realm of Shells\, and the poetry collection The Art of Walking. She is the founder of the Women Who Walk network of walking artists and academics and an occasional musician\, mummer\, and puppeteer. Her book Heavy Time is out from Penning in the Margins. She is the leader of the #DistanceDrift Sunday morning lockdown (and beyond) walks.

SUMMARY:Charles I and the Civil Wars: The World Turned Upside Down
DESCRIPTION:At 2 pm\, on Tuesday 30 January 1649\, King Charles I stepped onto a wooden scaffold outside Whitehall’s Banqueting House\, knelt in front of thousands of spectators and was publicly beheaded as a traitor. It was the brutal climax of years of civil war\, which had seen tens of thousands of people lose their lives and livelihoods as the kingdoms of England\, Wales\, Scotland and Ireland were plunged into chaos. \nIn this fascinating collaboration with the Museum of London Docklands and HistFest\, bestselling authors Jessie Childs and Leanda de Lisle\, and critically acclaimed playwright and history teacher Thabo Stuck will explore the complex events that led to the fateful moment of Charles’s execution. From the sweeping history of the civil wars and the human stories of debates\, battles and sieges to the mood within the royal court\, the character of Charles I himself\, the resilience of his wife Henrietta Maria\, and the decade-long republican rule that followed. \nIncluding music from Thabo Stuck’s critically acclaimed play\, #50Days\, a panel discussion and immersive re-enactment from the English Civil War Society\, discover the realities of a world turned upside down. There will be an opportunity to purchase the authors’ books at the end of the talk. \nThere are also digital tickets available to watch a livestream of the event. \n  \nAbout \nThabo Stuck is a history teacher from London and the creator and writer of #50Days. #50Days\, Thabo’s debut writing project\, is a Grime Musical that tells the story of the period that leads up to the outbreak of the 17th Century British Civil Wars. Using Grime music\, this show gives underrepresented Brits a voice in telling the story of one of the most integral but often misunderstood narratives of our nation. Described by The Independent as ‘a hurtling exploration of politics and revolution’. \nJessie Childs is an award-winning author\, historian and broadcaster. Her first book\, Henry VIII’s Last Victim\, won the Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography\, and her second\, God’s Traitors\, won the PEN Hessell-Tiltman Prize for History. Her third book\, The Siege of Loyalty House: A Civil War Story\, was published in May and hailed by Simon Schama as ‘almost Tolstoyan in its emotional intelligence and literary power’. Jessie reviews for many papers\, including the Sunday Times\, Guardian and London Review of Books\, and her TV contributions include the BAFTA-nominated Elizabeth I’s Secret Agents (BBC 2 & PBS) and two BBC series on Charles I. \nLeanda de Lisle is the author of the bestselling Tudor and Stuart history praised for meticulous research as well as strong narratives. She has a Masters degree in history from Oxford University. TUDOR\, her biography of the Tudor family 1437-1603\, was a top ten Sunday Times bestseller\, BBC History book of the year\, Daily Telegraph book of the year\, and History Today book of the year. THE SISTERS WHO WOULD BE QUEEN; THE TRAGEDY OF MARY\, KATHERINE AND LADY JANE GREY\, was a New York Times best seller and is the inspiration for Phillippa Gregory’s 2017 novel THE LAST TUDOR as well as Elizabeth Fremantle’s Sisters of Treason. WHITE KING\, a biography of the doomed Charles I\, was the winner of the 2018 Historical Writers Association non-fiction crown. Her latest\, on Henrietta Maria\, is a revisionist biography of a reviled queen and a Times and Sunday Times book of the year. \n  \nHistFest is an innovative history festival and events company\, which produces online and in-person events and courses for global audiences. \nThe English Civil War Society bring history to life through the authentic re-creation of 17th-century military and civil life\, stimulating interest in the turbulent period in British history when the country was torn apart by civil war. \n

SUMMARY:London’s Horror History & Offbeat British Cult Films
DESCRIPTION:Join the London Fortean Society with three writers on London and British horror as we look at the city’s dark cinematic street and how film transformed familiar British landscapes into spaces of terror. \nThe evening will show trailers for many of the films featured. \nLauren Jane Barnett – Death Lines: London’s Horror Film History \nLauren Jane Barnett unearths the literature\, legends\, and history behind horror classics including Peeping Tom and An American Werewolf in London\, and lesser-known works such as mind-control melodrama The Sorcerers; Gorgo\, Britain’s answer to Godzilla; tube terror Death Line; and Bela Lugosi’s mesmeric vehicle The Dark Eyes of London.\nTinged with humor\, social critique\, and more than a few scares\, her book Death Lines delights in revealing the hidden and often surprising relationship between London and the dark cinematic visions it has evoked.\nWhether read on the streets or from the comfort of the grave\, Death Lines is a treat for all cinephiles\, horror fans\, and lovers of London lore.\nIn the tradition of writing what you know\, Lauren Jane Barnett – in the life she’s lived\, the books she’s loved\, and the films she’s devoured – knows horror. \nDarrell Buxton and Jennifer Wallis – Offbeat: British Cinema’s Curiosities\, Obscurities and Forgotten Gems\nOffbeat contributors Darrell Buxton and Jennifer Wallis will be discussing some of Britain’s lesser-known cult films and their often-horrific depictions of mental healthcare and family relationships. From Twisted Nerve to Killer’s Moon\, and from Amicus’s Asylum to Pete Walker’s Frightmare\, we’ll see how British film between the 1960s and 1980s tackled some of the country’s thorniest issues\, in the process transforming familiar British landscapes into spaces of terror. \nOffbeat: British Cinema’s Curiosities\, Obscurities and Forgotten Gems (Revised and Updated) explores Britain’s obscurities\, curiosities and forgotten cinematic gems.
