DESCRIPTION:The Made in Prague Festival returns to the UK capital\, showcasing the best contemporary Czech culture in many central London venues throughout November. This year\, the popular multifaceted festival reflects the Year of Czech Music with fantastic classical and jazz concerts\, celebrates a centenary of the legacy of Franz Kafka through the means of visual art\, literature\, film and performance\, and remembers the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution with a UK premiere of a new documentary about the dissident playwright turn President Václav Havel. \n  \nKeeping in line with the Year of Czech Music\, the festival opens on 31 October with a performance by the London Symphony Orchestra playing contemporary classical music by Ondřej Adámek at the Barbican. The concert will commence a five-week programme showcasing various cultural events\, culminating in the festival’s closing night on 30 November at the Southbank Centre\, featuring world-renowned Czech violinist Pavel Šporcl accompanied by the English Chamber Orchestra. His performance promises to be a spectacular conclusion to this musical journey\, embodying Czech music’s dynamic and timeless spirit. \nThe festival also commemorates one hundred years since the death of Franz Kafka\, one of the most influential literary figures of the 20th century. Born in Prague\, Kafka’s work\, filled with existential themes and deep alienation\, inspires readers worldwide. This year\, the festival honours his legacy through a dance performance at the Coronet Theatre\, a literary evening and an open-air exhibition. \nA core component of the Made in Prague Festival remains its dedication to showcasing contemporary Czech cinema. This year’s film programme is particularly exciting\, with screenings of films such as Brothers\, the Czech nomination for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Film; She Came at Night\, the Czech Lion Award winner for both Best Director and Best Actress in a leading role; and Waltzing Matilda\, followed by a Q&A with the film’s leading actor Karel Roden\, offering UK audiences a window into the diverse and innovative world of modern Czech filmmaking. \nTo remember the 35th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution\, the festival honours the leading figure of the revolution\, the dissident playwright turn President Václav Havel\, with the UK premiere of Petr Jančárek’s Havel Speaking\, Can you Hear Me? Screened at the ICA on 14 November. On Havel’s invitation\, the filmmaker was granted unlimited access and creative freedom to capture the last few years of Havel’s life\, resulting in an extraordinary time-lapse documentary reflecting on Havel’s political legacy and universal human issues with absolute openness through previously unseen footage. \nFor those unable to attend live screenings and debates at the cinema\, the festival has teamed up with the BFI Player to introduce three Czech Classics for free as part of the 3 You Must See programme. DESCRIPTION:Edel Assanti presents Each Place Its Own Mind (17 January – 15 March 2025)\, featuring Czech artist Anna Hulačová among eight international artists. Hulačová’s innovative work bridges ecological themes with artistic experimentation\, offering a profound meditation on humanity’s bond with nature. \n\nHulačová contributes a series of striking concrete busts with honeycomb interiors\, created in collaboration with bees during their swarming season. These sculptures symbolize the ancient interconnection between humans and bees\, evoking a hybrid organism that reflects the porous relationship between body and consciousness. The pieces embody the exhibition’s theme of interwoven experiences across species\, exploring the shared psyche of all beings inhabiting a place. \nEach Place Its Own Mind engages with ideas from David Abram’s The Spell of the Sensuous (1996)\, reimagining humanity’s relationship with the natural world. It showcases an interdisciplinary mix of drawing\, sculpture\, film\, and installation\, addressing ecological\, cultural\, and ancestral narratives. Alongside Hulačová’s work\, the exhibition includes pieces by Mirtha Dermisache\, Noémie Goudal\, Sky Hopinka\, and others\, fostering a dialogue about the enchantment of the world and the interconnected web of existence. \nThe exhibition opens with a private view on 16 January 2025\, from 6-8 pm. \nAnna Hulačová (b. 1984\, Sušice\, Czech Republic) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts\, Prague (2012). She lives and works in Prague. Alongside this\, artist Christina Rauh Fishburne has created a series of calligraphy art in iconic letters and sketch artwork to capture the frantic and disturbing tale of the battle for the very soul of the world. These works have been captured and published in The Crow Emporium Press illustrated edition of Dracula by Bram Stoker. \nKirsty is a multidisciplinary artist who channels her creativity into various\, often intersecting\, mediums\, including painting\, illustration\, and writing. Aside from an A Level in Art\, Kirsty has received no formal training\, preferring to trust her own eye and instincts and avoiding the direct influence of others as much as possible. \nToday\, Kirsty lives and works in York\, where she continues creating and inspiring. This modern age\nhath seldom seen such action on a stage.”\n \nAlmost 400 years since it was written at sea\, come step into the riverside world of Walter Mountfort’s The Launching of the Mary. \n  \nDuring his ‘return from East India in 1632\, Walter Mountfort spent his idle hours writing a play. Set in a London shipyard\, complete with sprawling subplots and a range of colourful characters\, The Launching of the Mary immerses readers in a bustling riverside world. As shipyard artisans prepare to launch a ship\, while marine officers debate the ethics of overseas trade\, the mariner’s wife\, Dorotea Constance\, defends her home against a torrent of suitors. This workshop invites participants to explore this unknown Renaissance play through a lively but relaxed script-in-hand reading\, partly city comedy\, part domestic tragedy\, and part something else entirely. \nNo prior knowledge or performance experience is required to participate. A lightly abridged\, modern spelling edition of the play has been produced specially for this event\, and participants are invited to read\, listen\, or both. Her most recent work is her Rest Experience initiative\, which emerged from a residency at the Brighton Dome. She is a guest editor of Covert Magazine and her work is featured in the Glimpse anthology by Peepal Tree Press. Commissions included Witness Stand at Brighton Festival 2022 and a location-based story for the We Hear You Now audio journey in the South Downs National Park. Akila’s poetry publication Ritual for a Mango was published in 2024. She is writing her first novel. \nSonia Quintero. I am a queer Colombian–British poet\, have lived in Newham for several years. I am passionate to community knowledge production\, co-production\, and participatory methodology as well as grassroot movements promotion. I have become an active member of the community and have led several projects that combine my passion for poetry and LGBTQ+ rights. Seven years ago\, I started Newham Poetry Group\, a grassroot initiative that facilitates access to creative writing for people who speak English as their second or third language as well as engaging with marginalised communities through artistic activities such as open mics\, spoken words or even publishing their own books. \nI also co-founded Queer Newham and Borderless local initiatives that bring visibility to LGBTQ+ issues in my area and support LGBTQ+ refugees. We work closely with the LB Newham\, community groups and neighbours to tackle discrimination\, hate crime and other issues that impact us. Simultaneously\, I founded Casa Sofia in Colombia\, my home country. Casa Sofia is a collective of creative community artists that use artistic approach to connect people\, challenge dispowenred narratives and support local initiatives. \nSimo Lagnawi. Gnawa master Simo Lagnawi is an ambassador of Moroccan culture in London. With 8 albums under his belt including 4 solo records\, 3 albums with fusion project Electric Jalaba and a further disc with his Gnawa Blues all-stars\, Simo has released through Strut and Waulk Records\, his first solo album ‘Gnawa London ‘ featuring in Songlines magazine as one of their ‘Top of the World’ albums. He has also been nominated as Best Newcomer and Best Artist in their annual awards. \nSimo has performed on media outlets such as BBC World service\, CNN World\, BBC 3\, BBC 6 and Vox Africa\, and performed at a host of festivals including Glastonbury\, Secret Garden Party\, Latitude and Boom Town. \nThe Moroccan musician was raised in the Gnawa tradition and always remains true to his musical heritage. Each performance is a wholehearted expression of devotion from the UK’s leading Guembri player – a North-African bass instrument constructed from wood and cowhide\, with gut strings. Whether through crossover groups such as Electric Jalaba and the Gnawa Blues All-Stars\, or through hosting traditional ceremonial evenings – known as Lilas – the intention is always to bring the same healing energy through to the fore in each new creation and spread the Gnawa tradition through the UK in the process. \nRoy McFarlane FRSL\nRoy McFarlane is a Poet\, Writer and former Youth & Community Worker born in Birmingham of Jamaican parentage\, spending most of his years living in Wolverhampton and the Black Country and now living in Brighton. He is currently the National Canal Laureate. \nHe’s the former Birmingham Poet Laureate and co-editor of Celebrate Wha? Ten Black British Poets from the Midlands (Smokestack). His three collections are published by Nine Arches Press: Beginning With Your Last Breath and The Healing Next Time (shortlisted for the Ted Hughes Award and longlisted for the Jhalak Prize) and his third collection Living by Troubled Waters is out now. \nHe’s a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and was awarded a Doctor of Letters by the University of Wolverhampton. \nAfrican Night Fever. In 2003\, Ebou Touray from the Gambia and David Sijale from Tanzania\, launched a monthly music night at the Babylon Lounge in Hove\, showcasing the music and culture of Africa and the African diaspora. African Night Fever became a hub for local talent as people flocked to the nights in order to dance\, mingle and experience a mix of Live bands and DJ sets. From that\, sprang friendships\, sharing and genuine community spirit. \nAfrican Night Fever continues to evolve and partners with local venues and promotors throughout the UK to share a taste of African and Caribbean culture\, belonging and community to a diverse range of audiences. \n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Poetry Room\nPoetry Room is our popular evening of poetry\, music and conversation\, which we have organised for years. DESCRIPTION:Counterpoints Arts presents: We Are The Many at EartH Hackney on Sunday 15 June – a festival kicking off London Refugee Week 2025 – curated around the theme of ‘Community as a Superpower’\, serving up music\, stories\, sustenance\, healing and resistance. \nHosted by Nigerian-born British poet and playwright Inua Ellams\, the event brings together artists\, architects\, chefs\, DJs and musicians in a programme framed around collective and community organising; and ideas for a more equitable and inclusive world. Join us and be part of the many! \nWorkshop / Food / Spoken Word (EartH Kitchen) \n3pm:\nA closed workshop for youth groups will be led by Linett Kamala – the first female DJ at Notting Hill Carnival – focusing on healing through sound where participants will experience the calming and restorative sonic effects of sound systems. \n5pm:\nEartH Kitchen will open up to the public with an interactive edible sculpture by gastro-architect duo Playte inspired by The Rice Theory of Culture about how rice farming contributes to more collectivistic cultures\, stronger social bonds and a greater emphasis on collective well-being. Alongside this sculpture\, rice dishes will be available by guest chefs –  Carol Puthussery\, Najeem Ebadi (In The Mix)\, Seeds of Wild and sisterwoman vegan\, celebrating diverse cultural heritage and local ingredients. \n5:30pm:\nThe spoken word segment of the programme will feature exciting multi-hyphenates such as writer/actor/filmmaker Chakira Alin\, DJ/poet DJ Kat the Kat-a-lyst\, MC/rapper Fedzilla\, poet/writer/musician/educator Samatar Elmi and artist/performer/writer Tara Fatehi\, who will share their personal stories\, impart lived wisdom and speak to the collective power of community. \nAll are welcome to stay on and connect with others till doors close at 10pm. \n  \nMusic (EartH Theatre) \nOur music programme brings together artists whose voices amplify collective healing\, friendship\, and community. This sonic experience is all about connections and collaborations that cross genres and invite you to celebrate the many. \nDoors 7pm:\nBefore heading to the EartH Theatre\, don’t forget to drop by EartH Kitchen to taste the nourishing rice dishes cooked by our guest chefs before they sell out! \nFrom 7:30pm:\nBlack Obsidian Sound System (B.O.S.S.) was established in the summer of 2018 with the intention of bringing together a community of queer\, trans and non-binary black and people of colour involved in art\, sound and radical activism. Following in the legacies of sound system culture they wanted to learn\, build and sustain a resource for our collective struggles. The black-led system\, based in London\, is available to use or rent by community groups and others with the purpose of amplifying and connecting them. \nFrench-Senegalese anaiis grew up between continents\, moving from Toulouse to Dublin and Dakar before settling in Oakland\, California. She studied at Tisch School of Arts in New York before relocating to London to pursue her music career. Her work is self-reflective and created in pursuit of a collective healing. Following her debut release ‘Nina’\, a liberation chant and reclamation of freedom\, she went on to release her transcendent project\, ‘Darkness at Play’ which reflects her observations of the world\, seeking hope amidst injustice\, and explorations of the divine feminine as a healing force. 2024 sees anaiis add to her extensive list of collaborations with a joint mini-album with Brazilian Group Grupo Cosmo\, including features from Luedji Luna\, and Sessa – before a stunning new solo album in Fall 2025. \nSouth London post-punk band Goat Girl are committed to grassroots music\, community engagement and addressing issues like gentrification\, climate change\, migration and social injustice. On their third album\, Below the Waste\, Goat Girl encourages the listener to imagine a world where oppressive structures are broken and stripped away. DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of poetry as curios\, discovered text and found literary sculptures drawn from previously unseen works\, selected asemic writing and the poetic props of performances across the globe. Drawing from fifteen years of rabid activity\, this exhibition evidences the breadth of visual and conceptual poetry from one of the definitive experimentalists of the British 21st-century literary scene. \n\nOn the site of the former Notting Hill Books\, a formative space for many\, including Fowler\, this exhibition emphasises the potential of the marginal\, peculiar\, detritus-as-poetry mode so removed from the medium’s stereotypical obsession with neatness\, craft\, and clarity. From bear suits to homemade skeletons\, handwritten novels to concrete poems\, Poet Peasant represents the core aesthetic concerns of SJ Fowler – playful\, eclectic and anti-singular\, it is a deliberate mess of fun and weird visual literature that stretches the bounds of what poetry is. \nwww.stevenjfowler.com/poetpeasant \nSJ Fowler is a writer\, poet and performer who lives in London. His work has been commissioned by The National Gallery\, Tate Modern\, BBC Radio 3\, Somerset House\, Tate Britain\, Southbank Centre and he was part of the first Hub residency at Wellcome Collection. His visual poetry has been exhibited at the V&A\, Hayward Gallery\, Jerwood Space\, Mile End Art Pavilion\, Kielder Forest\, Tate St Ives and Palais de Tokyo. He has published over 50 works\, the subject of the Small Publishers Fair 2022 feature exhibition and given over 400 performances at venues around the world. He lecturer at Kingston University and is the director of the European Poetry Festival. DESCRIPTION:Mapping medieval manuscripts: how surviving romance manuscripts are aiding the search for People of Colour in North Atlantic medieval Europe \nMedieval manuscripts offer a unique window into the lives and imaginations of the past. Illuminated pages can point to wealthy patrons\, while the texts themselves reveal the interests and concerns of medieval readers. Some aspects of the medieval world\, however\, are less visible. Tracing the presence of People of Colour in North Atlantic medieval Europe is one such challenge. While representations exist\, the question remains: how can we locate the real people behind the stories?
