DESCRIPTION:Czech authors Petra Hůlová and Kateřina Tučková discuss their recent novels The Movement and Gerta with their English-language translators Alex Zucker and Véronique Firkusny. How do authors decide what to write about and how to write it\, and how do translators (writers\, too) reflect those decisions in their work? Join the Czech Center New York and Czech Center London for a one-hour conversation about these questions and more\, including the challenges and joys of bringing Czech fiction to English-language readers. The discussion will be followed by an audience Q&A. \nPETRA HŮLOVÁ: THE MOVEMENT\nIn this utopia\, the feminist Movement has been successful\, and women rule the world. Men are trained at reeducation facilities to accept the new normal in this futuristic satire challenging our sexual norms. The Movement’s founding ideology emphasizes that women should be valued for their inner qualities and not for their physical attributes. As a result\, men have been forbidden to be attracted to women based on their bodies. While some continue unreformed\, many submit–or are sent by wives and daughters–to the Institute for internment and reeducation. Our narrator\, an unapologetic guard at one of these reeducation facilities\, describes how the Movement started\, her journey\, and what happens when a program fails. She is convinced the Movement is nearing its final victory–a time when everybody will fall in line with its ideals. Outspoken\, ambiguous\, and terrifying\, this socio-critical satire of our sexual norms sets the reader firmly outside of their comfort zone. \nKATEŘINA TUČKOVÁ: GERTA\nThe award-winning novel by Czech author Kateřina Tučková―her first to be translated into English―is about one woman’s fate and the pursuit of forgiveness in a divided postwar world. 1945. Allied forces liberated Nazi-occupied Brno\, Moravia. For Gerta Schnirch\, daughter of a Czech mother and a German father aligned with Hitler\, it’s not deliverance; it’s a sentence. DESCRIPTION:The first Cockney Conversations Month* runs from Thursday 3rd March- Monday 4th April 2022 and kicks off with six online discussions on the significance of Cockney cultural heritage and how it adapted to physical\, social and cultural changes in the East End. \nWhat are Cockney Cultures?\nThe Cockney identity is under threat from bias\, prejudice and ignorance. However\, history shows how Cockney is an identity based on positive\, inclusive values. We celebrate what it means to be Cockney today\, for all creeds and races\, from its East End heartland and beyond\, through to the global Cockney diaspora. Cockney Cultures encourages greater self-belief\, confidence\, and pride in who Cockneys are\, what they stand for\, and how they can best work together to face their shared future. \nCockney Cultures is asking interested individuals\, cultural and community groups\, public bodies and venues to work with us through support\, resourcing and long-term collaboration. DESCRIPTION:To celebrate IWD\, Connaught Village invites indie bookshop Phlox Books to pop up over March with women-focused books and female author events featuring the likes of Abi Daré and Mona Arshi to showcase the female experience in literary form. \nFounder of East London independent bookshop Phlox Books\, Aimée Madill has proudly been serving ‘Books. Booze. Coffee’ since 2017 and is no stranger to pop-up bookstores in her role as ‘go-to’ for festival bookshops. On this occasion\, Aimée has taken the opportunity IWD has presented to platform female authors and host a series of events in Connaught Village. Located at 12 Connaught Street\, the pop-up will operate as a bookshop and events space where notable authors will discuss their work. \nAt street view\, the front of the bookstore will feature hand-painted illustrations by female illustrator Alezeia Fidalgo who has a penchant for books and creating original illustrations to accompany the text. \nThe first event at Phlox Connaught Village will take place on the day itself\, Tuesday 8th March\, with award-winning author\, Abi Daré\, whose debut novel ‘The Girl With the Louding Voice’ was published in 2020\, longlisted for the Desmond Elliott Prize and chosen as a BBC Radio 4 Book at Bedtime. Abi will be joined by Mona Arshi\, a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 and poet whose debut collection of poems received the Forward Prize for Best First Collection and appeared in the Poems on the Underground series. Arshi will be talking about her debut novel\, ‘Somebody Loves You’ (published 2021). Events will continue throughout March with a selection of authors handpicked by Aimée. Each event will see a discussion between the authors and an open forum for the audience to explore different themes of the female experience. \nEach event promises guests a deep dive into each woman’s creative process and an excellent chance to explore their views on IWD\, the female gaze\, and their respective literary futures. Wine will be served\, provided by Connaught Cellars\, in line with Phlox Book’s mantra of making bookshops relaxed\, social spaces. \nTickets for the event are free\, but registration is necessary\, although some spaces will be reserved for walk-ins. DESCRIPTION:We at FLAWA Festival are delighted to put together this unique conversation between two debut novelists and a literary activist who has been promoting diversity in the UK for over 20 years and is now working on her first novel. Join Nathalie Teitler\, Cristina Bendek and Karina Lickorish Quinn talking to Silvia Rothlisberger about their fiction writing on leaving and returning. \nThis talk will be moderated by Silvia Rothlisberger.  \nCristina Bendek is a Caribbean author\, born on the island of San Andrés (Colombia) in October 1987. In 2018 her first novel\, Salt Crystals\, won the Elisa Mújica National Novel Prize (Colombia). The novel has been translated into Portuguese (Moinhos\, 2021)\, and Danish (Aurora Boreal\, 2020)\, and now appears in English translation for the first time with Charco Press\, which will also launch the novel in Spanish for the North American readership. Some of her work has also been translated into German. Cristina is also a journalist but spends her time researching Caribbean literature and writing fiction. She lives in Berlin. \nDr Nathalie Teitler was born in Buenos Aires and did a PhD in Argentine poets. She has worked promoting inclusivity in British arts\, especially literature for 25 years.  She is the Director of the Complete Works- an initiative that had a significant impact on the landscape of British poetry. She is also the founding Director\, along with poet Leo Boix\, of Nuevo Sol\, an organisation developing British Latinx writers and building links with Latinx & Latin American writers around the world. She is working on her first novel\, exploring gender\, colonialism & race that is set in the tango scene of Buenos Aires in 1900. \nKarina Lickorish Quinn is a Peruvian-British writer and a lecturer at the University of Leeds. Her short prose has been published widely including in Wasafiri\, The Offing\, Palabritas\, and the Journal of Latina Critical Feminism. She was featured in Un Nuevo Sol\, the first major anthology of British-Latinx writers. Her debut novel The Dust Never Settles (Oneworld\, 2021) examines the legacy of colonialism in Peru. It will be published in Spanish as El Polvo Nunca se Asienta by Editorial Arde in May 2022. Karina is working on her second novel and a short story collection. She is represented by Seren Adams at United Agents.

Her debut collection\, overrun by wild boars (flipped eye\, 2021)\, explores the dislocation of lives\, communities\, objects\, and histories through migration and the legacies of colonisation. Her work has been published in British\, American\, Canadian and Irish journals\, and has been widely anthologised. Currently\, she is doing an MFA at the University of Michigan. \nJanel Pineda is a Los-Angeles born Salvadoran poet\, educator\, and the author of Lineage of Rain (Haymarket Books\, 2021). Janel holds an MA in Creative Writing and Education from Goldsmiths\, University of London and is currently pursuing an MPhil in Latin American Studies at the University of Cambridge. \nYvette Siegert is the author of Atmospheric Ghost Lights\, selected for the 2021 Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowship Award. Her debut collection\, a winner of the James Berry Poetry Prize\, explores the civil war in El Salvador and is forthcoming from Bloodaxe Books. Recent translations include Chantal Maillard’s Killing Plato (New Directions)\, shortlisted for the PEN Award for Poetry in Translation\, and Alejandra Pizarnik’s Extracting the Stone of Madness: Poems 1962–1972 (New Directions)\, which won the Best Translated Book Award. \nSofía Vaisman Maturana was born in Santiago\, Chile 1993. Composer\, poet\, and music improviser. In 2019 awarded with the Victorina Press Poetry Awards (runner up)\, London. She currently publishes monthly chronicles of her experience as a boater for ‘Salvoconducta fanzine’ (Santiago\, Chile). \nWitchas: a music collective based in London created by Latin American migrant women and the daughters of Latin American migrants. Witchas! fusions bullerengue and other afro latin rhythms to create and experiment with new sounds and to inhabit cultural spaces usually dominated by male presence. \nSomos Chibchas is a cultural association involving dance\, music\, visual arts and theater\, focused on research\, practice\, preservation and diffusion of traditional Colombian culture and dances. Based on the study of old and new rhythms mostly focused on traditional dance movements and how they influence new dances developed for different genres of music.

DESCRIPTION:Hear the stories of patients and staff at a typical London hospital\, told through the poems of Di Sherlock. \n\n\n\nShe shrugs off the memory \n\n\n\nlike a scratchy sweater \n\n\n\nor an old skin\, \n\n\n\nsays cancer is one more curve ball \n\n\n\nLife’s thrown her way. \n\n\n\n‘Written portraits’ is a collection of poems by Di Sherlock drawn from conversations with patients and staff she met during a residency at Charing Cross Hospital and Maggie’s Centre West. \n\n\n\nThe poems are part of the ‘People Like You’ project which sees Di’s collaborators at Imperial College and Goldsmiths University of London investigating perceptions around personalised medicine. The series of 21 portraits explore the ways that preference\, need\, desire\, pleasure and recognition serve as grounds for judging people to be alike. \n\n\n\nAt this lunchtime event\, the Great Exhibition Road Festival brings Di together with anthropologist Sophie Day to discuss the project and the impact this way of getting to know and profile individuals might inform future approaches to a more personalised approach to healthcare. The event will also feature readings of some of the poems. \n\n\n\nWritten Portraits was funded by the Wellcome Trust.

She was appointed as a US National Student Poet in 2013 and won the 2019 Troubadour International Poetry Prize and the 2020 York Poetry Prize. Her writing has appeared in several publications\, including the 2020 Best New Poets anthology. He is the recipient of Lancaster University’s Portfolio Prize where he earned his MA in CreativeWriting. His poetry appears in Haymarket Books’ The Breakbeat Poets – LatiNEXT\, The Latino Book Review Magazine\, The Indianapolis Review\, and The Santa Fe Writers Project and elsewhere. She is a Barbican Young Poet and a Roundhouse Poetry Collective alumna\, and has won the Bridport Prize\, the Wells Festival Young Poets Prize and the Asia HousePoetry Slam 2019. Her work has been published in Tentacular Magazine\, and anthologised in SLAM! You’re Gonna Wanna Hear This (Pan Macmillan)\, and A Letter\, A Poem\, A Home (Red River Press). A special occasion to share the passion for art by putting together experimental electronic music and the minimalistic Japanese art of Haiku.  \n\n\n\nAfter 2 years\, the event returns featuring performances by members and friends of Naviar Records\, working in ambient\, electronic\, and contemporary classical music fields\, including SIMON MCCORRY\, MANJA RISTIĆ\, AUDIO OBSCURA\, LEON CLOWES\, ENCYM & GEORGE CROWLEY\, and DANIEL GREEN.  \n\n\n\nEach performance will be introduced by haiku poems written and recited by members of the British Haiku Society\, the event’s official partner. DESCRIPTION:A book launch & film screening of the Czech film classic Ear.\n \nTo mark the publishing of a first English translation of Jan Procházka’s masterpiece Ear\, David Vaughan and Peter Hames discuss both the book and the film\, followed by a screening of the 1970 classic\, considered one of the greatest of all Czech films. \nThe Ear – Ucho in Czech – was the culmination of ten years of fruitful cooperation between the director Karel Kachyňa and screenwriter Jan Procházka. It is set in the period of the Stalinist purges in 1950s Czechoslovakia. A senior government official Ludvík and his wife Anna come back from a drunken party at the ministry to find that their house has been bugged. A gripping psychological drama follows\, as they await a knock on the door. \nThe novella Ear is perhaps Jan Procházka’s greatest work. He was one of the most popular and prolific Czech writers of the 1960s\, closely identified with the reforms and growing artistic freedoms of the time. It combines the economy of Hemingway with the tension of Hitchcock\, set in a stifling totalitarian environment. \nFor the first time Ear has been published in English – by Karolinum Press in a translation by Mark Corner. \nDavid Vaughan\, who wrote the afterword to the new edition\, is a writer\, broadcaster\, journalist and university lecturer. \nPeter Hames is a film historian and Visiting Professor in Film Studies at Staffordshire University.
