SUMMARY:Erev Yom HaShoah: ‘People Without History Are Dust’: An In Conversation with Dr Anna Hájková and Rabbi Kamila Kopřivová
DESCRIPTION:Where are the stories of great queer love in the Shoah? There are almost none. Dr Anna Hájková examines why the history of same-sex desire during the Shoah – queerness among Jews persecuted by the Nazis for their race – is largely absent from history books\, and how restoring these narratives can contribute to a more inclusive understanding of the Holocaust. \nBased on extensive archival research and oral histories\, her book\, recently awarded the 75th National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust category\, offers concise\, accessible insight into the queer history of the Holocaust for both general readers and specialists. On Monday\, 13th April\, Anna will discuss her research in conversation with Rabbi Kamila Kopřivová on the occasion of Yom HaShoah\, the annual day of Holocaust remembrance in the Jewish calendar. \n\n6.30 pm – Erev Yom HaShoah Service\n7 pm – In Conversation\, followed by Q&A and refreshments\nEarly Bird Tickets: £15 members / £20 non-members\nEarly bird ends Monday\, 6 April\nBOOK NOW\n\nDr Anna Hájková is a Reader of modern European continental history at the University of Warwick. She is the author of\, among others\, The Last Ghetto: An Everyday History of Theresienstadt (2020) and People Without History Are Dust: Queer Desire in the Holocaust (2025)\, which won the 75th National Jewish Book Award in the Holocaust category in February. Hájková is the pioneer of queer Holocaust history.

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Dan Jennings with Paul Weller Dancing Through the Fire
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate and expansive evening with award‑winning broadcaster and journalist Dan Jennings\, as he discusses DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE: The Authorised Oral History of Paul Weller\, the first fully authorised and definitive oral account of one of Britain’s most influential and enduring musical figures. \nThis event forms part of The Long Play Sessions\, ICMP’s curated series celebrating transformative writers\, artists and cultural voices who shape how we understand music\, identity and creative expression. Each session opens a window into the stories behind the art — blending conversation\, cultural history and lived experience. \nHosting the evening will be acclaimed author Daniel Rachel and joining as a guest will be Go! Discs founder Andy Macdonald. \nIn DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE\, Jennings traces the extraordinary creative life of Paul Weller\, from the explosive urgency of The Jam\, through the ambitious sophistication of The Style Council\, to a prolific and uncompromising solo career spanning more than three decades. Built from over 200 hours of interviews with more than 250 contributors\, including Weller himself; the book offers an unprecedented\, collective portrait of a musician whose influence has defined generations. \nDrawing on unique access to Weller’s inner circle of family\, friends\, bandmates\, producers and collaborators\, Jennings reveals the drive\, discipline and restless creativity behind a career that continually resisted nostalgia and commercial complacency. The result is candid\, generous and richly revealing — capturing not just the myth\, but the man at the centre of one of British music’s most remarkable artistic journeys. \nFar more than a standard biography\, DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE explores the realities of longevity\, reinvention and creative survival. It reflects on class\, culture\, fandom and the personal cost of sustaining artistic integrity in the public eye\, while charting how Weller became one of the very few artists to achieve Number One albums across five consecutive decades. \nPaul Weller’s story — creative\, uncompromising and continually evolving\, speaks to anyone who cares about music as a cultural force. It asks what it takes to remain vital\, curious and true to yourself when the world expects you to stand still. \nAlready hailed by critics as a landmark work of music journalism\, DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE is being recognised as the definitive account of one of Britain’s greatest artists. \nTickets available here and currently on a limited 2-4-1 offer – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-long-play-sessions-dan-jennings-paul-weller-dancing-through-the-fire-tickets-1987599404323?aff=oddtdtcreator \nWhat to Expect\n\nA talk from Dan Jennings exploring the making of DANCING THROUGH THE FIRE\, the interview process\, and the challenge of capturing a living legend through many voices\nIn‑depth discussion of creativity\, longevity\, reinvention and artistic integrity across five decades of British music\nBehind‑the‑scenes insight into Jennings’ unprecedented access to Paul Weller and his closest collaborators\nReflections on class\, fandom\, cultural legacy and why Weller’s music continues to resonate across generations\nAudience Q&A\, offering the chance to engage directly with Jennings about his research\, the writing process and Paul Weller’s cultural impact\nBook signing — bring your copy or purchase one on the night\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for a thoughtful\, energising and unforgettable evening celebrating one of modern music’s most vital and uncompromising creative figures. \n\n\n\nLocation\nThe Venue\, ICMP (Queens Park Campus)\, NW6 6PA

SUMMARY:Darcey Steinke & Octavia Bright: Writing the Body in Pain
DESCRIPTION:Darcey Steinke’s This Is the Door: Notes from a Body in Pain is a profound and searching examination of pain\, moving organ by organ through the body (spine\, knees\, skin) while weaving together personal experience with literature\, art\, and medicine. From surgery to pilgrimage\, from Frida Kahlo’s pain diaries to encounters with physicians\, Steinke asks: what does pain do to us\, and what might it make possible? She is joined by Octavia Bright\, whose memoir\, This Ragged Grace\, charts a different yet equally visceral journey through addiction\, recovery\, and renewal.

SUMMARY:Laetitia Barbier: Heads Will Roll—and Perhaps Fly: The Literary and Visual Legacy of the Guillotine in France
DESCRIPTION:The French guillotine stands as one of the most charged instruments of modernity: an engineering feat codified in the late eighteenth century to rationalize state execution\, with the ambition of rendering it more egalitarian and—strikingly to us today—more humane. Yet its function cannot be disentangled from the profound psychic and cultural shockwaves it produced\, particularly during the Reign of Terror\, when mechanized death transformed the executioner into a mere agent and the act itself became at once spectacle and routine. \nWhat is remarkable is not only its political significance\, but the rich afterlife it generated across artistic and literary domains. Reports of post-mortem blinking\, animated bodies\, and an obsessive fascination with severed\, seemingly “living” heads reveal a collective preoccupation with the limits of vitality. Imbued with an uncanny persistence\, these fragments blur the threshold between life and death\, returning as motifs that oscillate between horror\, fascination\, and a dark aesthetic charge within the artistic production of the period. \nBy tracing the guillotine’s visual and literary haunting manifestations in 19th and 20th century France\, we begin to grasp its peculiar legacy: not merely as a technology in the service of abjection\, but as an ambiguously potent image-making force that continues to shape the imagination. \nFrench-born Laetitia Barbier is a tarot teacher\, cartomancer\, and independent scholar. She is the author of Tarot and Divination Cards: A Visual Archive (2021) and Jesus Now: Contemporary Art + Pop Culture. She holds a BA in Art History from Sorbonne University (2009) and served as Head Librarian and Programming Director at Morbid Anatomy from 2012 to 2024. Her work explores art\, esoterica\, and the cultural function of images\, with a particular interest in their symbolic and historical resonances. She lives in Brooklyn\, New York.

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Lloyd Bradley – Funk Is Its Own Reward
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening with Lloyd Bradley\, acclaimed music journalist and cultural historian\, as he discusses his seminal book Funk: Is Its Own Reward\, one of the most definitive explorations of funk music and its enduring cultural impact. \nThis event forms part of The Long Play Sessions\, a curated series hosted by ICMP celebrating influential writers who have shaped how we understand music\, culture and history. Each session brings books to life through live conversation\, context and deep creative insight. \nIn Funk: It’s Its Own Reward\, Bradley traces the evolution of funk from its roots in soul\, jazz and gospel to its explosive influence on hip hop\, electronic music and contemporary pop. More than a genre study\, the book examines funk as a philosophy — a sound rooted in liberation\, identity\, resistance and collective joy. \nDrawing on interviews\, cultural analysis and lived experience\, Bradley explores artists such as James Brown\, Parliament-Funkadelic\, Prince and Sly Stone\, while also unpacking funk’s political power\, its connection to Black identity\, and its role as a radical\, community-driven form of expression. \nBoth scholarly and deeply human\, the book positions funk not just as music you dance to\, but as a worldview — one that celebrates groove\, individuality and freedom on its own terms. \nTickets available here and currently on a limited 2-4-1 offer – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-long-play-sessions-lloyd-bradley-funk-is-its-own-reward-tickets-1987743069028?aff=oddtdtcreator \n\n\nWhat to expect \n\nAn in-depth talk with Lloyd Bradley on the ideas and stories behind Funk: It’s Its Own Reward\nDiscussion on funk’s musical\, cultural and political legacy\nInsights into music journalism\, cultural writing and storytelling\nAudience Q&A\nBook signing opportunity — bring your copy or purchase one on the night\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for an enlightening and groove-filled evening with one of the UK’s most respected voices in music writing.

SUMMARY:Marmalade and Masquerades - Live Performance with Narration
DESCRIPTION:Marmalade and Masquerades \nAndré Caplet: Conte Fantastique (1922) after Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death\, for harp\, narrator and string quartet. Story adapted by Erin Muldoon. \nHerbert Chappell: Paddington’s First Concert (mid-1970s)\, arranged for the same ensemble by Roger Montgomery. \nTravel from the familiar warmth of 32\, Windsor Gardens\, home to London’s favourite bear\, into the shadowy world of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. This imaginative programme brings together two contrasting tales\, showing how music can express both light and dark\, comfort and mystery. \nThrough engaging live performance with narration\, children and families will discover how composers use sound to tell stories. Some feel cosy\, playful\, and curious. Others are dramatic\, eerie and full of suspense. Each invites listeners to picture characters\, places and emotions in their own way. \nOn one side\, Paddington Bear’s world is brought to life through music that celebrates kindness\, humour and small everyday adventures. On the other hand\, André Caplet’s Conte Fantastique draws us into a darker\, more mysterious atmosphere\, inspired by Poe’s haunting tale of Prince Prospero’s abbey. \nPlaced side by side\, these works reveal how music can spark imagination across very different moods and stories. Together\, they offer a rich and memorable introduction to the power of musical storytelling. \nTo Hire String Quartets  & Harpists in London for Private and Corporate Events\, visit Music for London.
