SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Paul Sexton with Rock Goes to College (Special performance from Freya Everest)
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening with Paul Sexton\, acclaimed music journalist\, author and broadcaster\, as he explores his latest book Rock Goes to College — the definitive\, untold story of the UK university gig circuit that launched a generation of legendary artists. With an opening performance by talented singer-songwriter Freya Everest\, this one is not to be missed!  \nIn Rock Goes to College\, Sexton traces the rise of Britain’s student gig circuit during the late 1960s and 1970s. This grassroots touring network became a proving ground for emerging artists during the explosion of rock music and the album era. As new universities and polytechnics opened across the UK\, bands criss-crossed the country in battered vans\, playing student unions\, honing their sound and chasing the dream of a record deal. \nDrawing on extensive original interviews and his unrivalled access to artists and industry figures\, Sexton tells remarkable early-career stories of acts including Pink Floyd\, Led Zeppelin\, The Who\, Queen\, Elton John\, Fleetwood Mac\, Genesis\, Nick Drake\, AC/DC and Dire Straits — as well as the student promoters and social secretaries who booked them\, many of whom would go on to shape the modern music industry themselves. The book also reveals how Paul McCartney and Wings returned to this circuit post-Beatles to road-test a new band from the ground up. \nPart music history\, part social history\, Rock Goes to College captures a vital moment when higher education\, youth culture and live music collided — shaping careers\, communities and the future of British rock. \nWhat to expect\n\nAn in-depth conversation with Paul Sexton on the stories and research behind Rock Goes to College\nInsight into the UK’s university gig circuit and its role in developing iconic artists\nDiscussion on music journalism\, biography and documenting cultural history\nAudience Q&A\nA live and intimate acoustic performance from Freya Everest\nBook signing opportunity — bring your copy or purchase one on the night\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for an entertaining\, insightful and nostalgia-rich evening uncovering one of the most influential — and least documented — chapters in British music history. \nAbout The Long Play Sessions\nThis event forms part of The Long Play Sessions\, a curated series hosted by ICMP Music School\, celebrating influential writers whose work has shaped how we understand music\, culture and creative history. Each session brings landmark books to life through live conversation\, historical context and deep industry insight.

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Zakia Sewell – Finding Albion – Myth\, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Friday 5th June at 7:00 pm at ICMP’s Queen’s Park venue for a special in‑conversation event with award‑winning writer\, DJ and broadcaster Zakia Sewell\, as she discusses her brand‑new book: \nFINDING ALBION – Myth\, Folklore and the Quest for a Hidden Britain \nIn this intimate interview\, Zakia will discuss her quest for ‘another Britain’. How she traversed the length and breadth of our island from Somerset to Scotland\, seeking out a different story – one that lies beyond divisive national myths and symbols. \nIn Finding Albion\, Zakia uncovers an alternative spirit of Britain that is vividly alive today. It is found in otherworldly folk songs\, ancient legends\, Celtic seasonal rites and mystic stone circles that punctuate our landscape. Her journey begins as the sun rises on the spring equinox over Glastonbury Tor\, where she meets neopagans reclaiming traditions from our pre-Christian past. At summer’s peak at Notting Hill Carnival\, she hears cultural echoes that passed along the slave trade routes from the Caribbean. On All Hallows’ Eve\, she encounters the ghosts of Empire that are still haunting the nation\, and in the depths of a Cornish winter\, she asks if today’s new folk revival could unite our increasingly divided country? \nFinding Albion brings a hopeful story of Britain out from the shadows\, giving us a deeper sense of who we are and heralding the promise of a brighter future. \nTickets available here – https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/the-long-play-sessions-zakia-sewell-finding-albion-tickets-1988473699363?aff=oddtdtcreator \nABOUT THE AUTHOR \nZakia Sewell is a writer\, DJ and broadcaster based in London. She hosts Dream Time on BBC Radio 6 Music and used to host the flagship breakfast show on NTS Radio. For the past eight years\, she has been producing and presenting radio documentaries and podcasts for platforms such as BBC Radio 3 and 4\, Tate and Camden Arts Centre. Her acclaimed four-part Radio 4 series My Albion was an inspiration for her book. Her writing has appeared in publications including Tate Etc.\, Resident Advisor and Weird Walk\, as well as in the essay collection This Woman’s Work.

SUMMARY:Marmalade and Masquerades - Live Performance with Narration
DESCRIPTION:Marmalade and Masquerades \nAndré Caplet: Conte Fantastique (1922) after Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death\, for harp\, narrator and string quartet. Story adapted by Erin Muldoon. \nHerbert Chappell: Paddington’s First Concert (mid-1970s)\, arranged for the same ensemble by Roger Montgomery. \nTravel from the familiar warmth of 32\, Windsor Gardens\, home to London’s favourite bear\, into the shadowy world of Edgar Allan Poe’s The Masque of the Red Death. This imaginative programme brings together two contrasting tales\, showing how music can express both light and dark\, comfort and mystery. \nThrough engaging live performance with narration\, children and families will discover how composers use sound to tell stories. Some feel cosy\, playful\, and curious. Others are dramatic\, eerie and full of suspense. Each invites listeners to picture characters\, places and emotions in their own way. \nOn one side\, Paddington Bear’s world is brought to life through music that celebrates kindness\, humour and small everyday adventures. On the other hand\, André Caplet’s Conte Fantastique draws us into a darker\, more mysterious atmosphere\, inspired by Poe’s haunting tale of Prince Prospero’s abbey. \nPlaced side by side\, these works reveal how music can spark imagination across very different moods and stories. Together\, they offer a rich and memorable introduction to the power of musical storytelling. \nTo Hire String Quartets  & Harpists in London for Private and Corporate Events\, visit Music for London.

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Simon Reynolds - Still In A Dream with Rudy Tambala
DESCRIPTION:Join us at The Long Play Sessions for an immersive and intellectually charged evening with acclaimed music critic and cultural historian Simon Reynolds\, as he discusses ‘Still in a Dream: Shoegaze\, Slackers and the Reinvention of Rock\, 1984–1994′. \nIn Still in a Dream\, Reynolds picks up where Rip It Up and Start Again left off\, tracing the underground explosion that followed post‑punk: the rise of shoegaze\, noisepop\, slacker rock and grunge. Drawing on his first-hand experience as a journalist embedded in the scene\, Reynolds captures a moment when guitar music turned inward and expansive at once — when distortion\, volume and texture became vehicles for emotion\, alienation and altered states. \nFrom the shimmering dreamworlds of Cocteau Twins and Slowdive\, to the visceral noise of Sonic Youth\, My Bloody Valentine\, Dinosaur Jr. and Pavement\, Reynolds explores how this music reflected the psychic climate of the time: youth disaffection\, political conservatism\, and the last flourish of analogue culture before the internet remade everything. Both a personal memoir and a cultural analysis\, the book is as much about how music felt as about how it sounded. \nFar more than a scene-by-scene history\, Still in a Dream examines why this era continues to echo through contemporary music\, fashion and attitudes — and how its ethos of experimentation\, withdrawal\, intensity and beauty reshaped the possibilities of rock music for decades to come. \nWhat to Expect \n\nA talk from Simon Reynolds exploring the ideas\, emotions and cultural forces behind the book\nDeep discussion of shoegaze\, underground guitar music and alternative culture from 1984–1994\nInsight into Simon’s writing process\, music journalism career and experiences documenting the era as it unfolded\nReflections on youth\, alienation\, escapism\, politics and the changing role of music media\nAudience Q&A\, offering the chance to engage directly with Reynolds on music history\, criticism and legacy\nBook signing — bring your copy or purchase one on the evening\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for a rich\, reflective and exhilarating exploration of this defining period of modern music history. \nAbout The Long Play Sessions \nThis event is part of The Long Play Sessions\, ICMP’s curated series spotlighting transformative writers\, artists and cultural voices who shape the way we understand music\, identity and creative expression. SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions : Stuart Braithwaite with Spaceships over Glasgow
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an intimate and electrifying evening with Stuart Braithwaite\, founding member of Mogwai\, as he discusses Spaceships Over Glasgow: Mogwai\, Mayhem and Misspent Youth — a raw\, funny and deeply honest memoir of music obsession\, life on the road\, and the strange magic of live sound. \nThis event forms part of The Long Play Sessions\, ICMP’s curated series celebrating artists and writers who shape how we experience and understand music culture. Each session explores the stories beneath the noise — where creativity\, identity and lived experience intersect — offering audiences a rare chance to engage directly with the people who make and document the music that defines generations. \nIn Spaceships Over Glasgow\, Braithwaite traces his journey from a music-obsessed childhood in Scotland to the global stages of one of the world’s most influential post‑rock bands. With warmth\, self‑deprecation and startling candour\, he recounts formative gigs\, life‑changing records\, chaotic tours and the friendships that sustained Mogwai through decades of relentless volume and evolution. \nSet against the backdrop of Glasgow’s fertile underground scene\, the book is both a love letter to live music and an unfiltered account of the realities of life in a band — the exhilaration\, exhaustion\, excess and uncertain balance between creativity and survival. From teenage discovery of Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine\, to tinnitus‑inducing shows and international acclaim\, Braithwaite captures what it means to build a life around sound. \nFar more than a rock memoir\, Spaceships Over Glasgow reflects on youth\, belonging\, and the ways music can serve as escape\, identity and salvation. It speaks to anyone who has ever stood in a crowd and felt their life rearranged by noise — or dreamed of stepping onto a stage and making that feeling happen for others. \nWhat to Expect \n\nAn intimate talk from Stuart\, exploring the stories\, memories and moments behind the book\nInsight into Mogwai’s journey\, Glasgow’s underground music culture\, and the realities of long‑term life in a band\nDiscussion of creativity\, obsession\, touring\, friendship and the sustaining power of loud music\nReflections on youth\, risk\, resilience and the transformative experience of live performance\nAudience Q&A\, offering the chance to engage directly with Braithwaite about writing\, music and Mogwai’s legacy\nBook signing — bring your copy or purchase one at the event\n\nWe look forward to welcoming you to The Long Play Sessions for a candid\, joyful and uncompromising evening celebrating music as a lifelong force — told by someone who has lived it\, loudly and without filter.
