SUMMARY:Islington Art Festival - Figurative Drawing Class
DESCRIPTION:The workshop will be divided between still life and figure drawing. You will be drawing an experienced musician and a highly crafted musical instrument.\nBy referencing the 1870 paintings of Edgar Degas\, Musicians in the Orchestra and The Orchestra at the Opera\, artists are invited to respond to the rhythm and movements in practice and the exquisite form of the musical instrument. SUMMARY:Access + Ability in the Arts\, Design & Technology- Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Access for all in the arts\nWith Japan hosting the Paralympic Games this year\, the world’s attention has been on disability. This exhibition highlights the people\, programmes and products that change how we think about access for all in the arts and everyday life. \nThe exhibition features British arts organisations Extant\, Graeae Theatre Company and Intoart and their recent interactions with Japan and collaborations with Japanese artists. \nCeramicist IWAMOTO Ikuko and architect YAMANAKA Akira\, both based in the UK\, show the importance of incorporating a broad-minded approach to design by explaining how their work has become more inclusive. \nIn a unique project with the Japanese Gallery Kensington to show the possibilities of reformatted art\, UCL Mechanical Engineering has transformed a woodblock print by artist KANEKO Kunio into 3D art. Visitors to the exhibition will also see how craftsman MIYABO Katsuyuki and inventor MIYAKE Seiichi have helped to improve the lives of disabled people.

SUMMARY:We Gather – Craft Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:We Gather – Craft Exhibition featuring five female makers of Black and Asian Heritage\nNew Crafts Council exhibition We Gather features five female makers of Black and Asian heritage whose work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value\, 17 November 2021 – 5 February 2022 \nWe Gather exhibition opens at the Crafts Council Gallery on 17 November and features five female Black and Asian heritage artists. Whilst their chosen materials and disciplines vary\, their work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value. The makers are Shaheen Ahmed\, Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings\, Francisca Onumah and Onome Otite. \nThe title We Gather refers to the gathering of ideas\, skills and emotions embedded within these five craft practices and the meeting of perspectives that have been underrepresented in the industry. It is also a symbol of gratitude towards the communities who gathered their courage\, bodies\, and voices to support justice for Black lives\, which instigated deeper conversations between the UK’s Black makers and the Crafts Council. \n“This exhibition has offered us a unique opportunity to curate in honour of women who share similar experiences and frames of reference to our own\, but also within a mainstream cultural organisation that we haven’t traditionally seen ourselves reflected in. We are excited to bring together their collection of works\, which offer audiences fresh visibility to crafts that has emotional depth\, space and social resonance.” Curators of We Gather\, Rosie Ross & Griffi. \nThe We Gather exhibition came out of Craft Expertise\, the AHRC-funded UKRI/RCUK Innovation Fellowship led by Dr Karen Patel of Birmingham City University\, collaborating with Crafts Council. The research aimed to raise awareness of inequalities in the current craft economy in the UK and highlight the various challenges women of colour face in the sector. \nCommissioned by Dr Karen Patel as part of her research\, each artist in the exhibition will present new and existing work. \nBirmingham-based artist Shaheen Ahmed uses maps to reflect narratives of statelessness and disparagement. Her work is layered with a multitude of craft processes and motifs\, including calligraphy and Islamic geometry. She wore a blindfold while making them connect with the emotions and experiences of oppressed societies. \nEast Sussex-based artist Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, known for her provocative textile works that challenge preconceptions of knitting and crochet\, has created a knitted magazine cover – ‘We Mek Magazine’- full of symbolism with a central figure inspired by political activist Angela Davis and with her watch set to 9.25\, the time that George Floyd lost his life to police brutality. \nBritish-Sudanese textile artist Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings will present a new light installation. The work incorporates dyeing\, screen-printing\, and Devoré techniques to explore themes of identity\, communication\, heritage\, and womanhood. The artist is influenced by her Sudanese heritage\, which is reflected in her use of Arabic geometry\, colour\, and form. \nGhanaian-born silversmith Francisca Onumah has created three emotive and figurative vessels in her new work ‘In our sKin’ (2021) that reflect family\, relationships and historical images of Ghanaian people in everyday life. Their abstracted patterns are deconstructed from traditional Ghanaian motifs\, fabrics\, and crafted objects. Instead\, marks and textures are repeatedly hammered into sheet metal to mirror and resemble the patterns found in textiles and fabrics. \nLondon-based artist Onome Otite has created a new textile work inspired by the support network between women\, the group of figures in her piece are based on close friends of hers that have inspired her. She has also intentionally chosen five figures to mirror the relevance of the five women taking part in the We Gather exhibition. She has hand-stitched loose-folded fabrics across her hand-drawn statistics\, which each of her subjects has donated. \nAt the centre of the exhibition is a gathering space. Material from the commissioning artists will be displayed alongside other pioneering female makers whose work celebrates craft within everyday contexts. Among these will be works by artists Jasleen Kaur and Magdalene Odundo DBE from the Crafts Council Collection. We Gather is a site for learning and reflection\, with books\, reports and images encouraging visitors to discuss visibility\, cultural traditions\, and the value of women’s contribution to craft within everyday contexts. \nThe exhibition also features a selection of objects and portraits of female artisans from The Black Artisans\, a photographic project by Jo Sealy that celebrates Black artisans in traditional sectors of UK heritage crafts and gives visibility to doing practices derived from African and Caribbean cultural heritage\, including steel pan making and calabash art. \nThe exhibition graphic design is by Rose Nordin\, co-founder of OOMK (One of My Kind).

SUMMARY:呼吸 Hūxī Respiration Art Exhibition and Live Performances
DESCRIPTION:After several years of a world pandemic\, where has your breath has taken you? Is it a form of escapism\, a little breathing space to relax\, get out of your own head and pursue a mindful experience? How important is it to performative phrases that express tension? \nBreath is a discrepant engagement across passageways and afterlives\, for to respire is an opening for life and death and the exquisite possibility of escape. \nTo mark the start of a new lunar year\, Goldsmiths Confucius Institute will be hosting an intriguing new art exhibition exploring respiration in relation to the Chinese characters 呼吸 Hūxī. \nIntermittent live performances will be taking place throughout the duration of the exhibition and Covid-friendly refreshments will also be available to take home. \nThis exhibition will present a variety of mediums (including but not limited to experimental videography\, photography\, painting\, sculpture\, physical installation and textile) from a range of contemporary artists\, including external artists as well as Goldsmith’s Art\, Music\, Design and Theatre and Performance students\, and will investigate the importance of respiration in creative practice and the challenges of being resistant. \nInhale and exhale are seen as opposites and equals at the same time\, influx-and-efflux marks how’s movements oscillate between porous extremities and radiating interiorities. The dynamic impulses happening across linguistic patterns. \n呼吸 has resonances with the experience of being simultaneously inside and outside the scene of respiration\, both shifts recalibrate the self\, the other\, the properties and subjects involved with them. Like an otherwise arranged by syntactical reinvention\, or the influx-and-efflux of words across sentences\, waves\, and worlds\, 呼吸 is a sonic entanglement. It is a call and response beckoned by ideological impulse\, political determination\, and social sound that travels across disparate life forces. \n呼吸 Hūxī – Respiration \n11th February – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths\nAfternoon Session: 4pm – 5.30pm\nEvening Session: 6pm – 7.30pm \n12th February – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths\nEvening Session 6pm – 7.30pm \n13th February – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths\n6pm – 7.30pm – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths \nCovid Regulations\nParticipants are encouraged to take a lateral flow test prior to arrival\, required to wear a mask throughout the exhibition and maintain social distancing and relevant health and safety regulations. \nThis is event is free for Goldsmiths staff and students and £5 for non-staff/students. SUMMARY:ROSL Art Talk: Muse by Ruth Millington + Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Making of Muse \nMeet Editor Mireille Harper\, Illustrator Dina Razin and Author Ruth Millington as they discuss the story behind Muse (2022\, Vintage Publishing). From selecting the muses to illustrating each of them\, discover how Muse collaborated from start to finish. \nThe perception of the muse is that of a passive\, powerless model\, at the mercy of an influential and older artist. But is this trope a romanticised myth? Far from posing silently\, muses have brought emotional support\, intellectual energy\, career-changing creativity and practical help to artists. \nMuse tells the true stories of the incredible muses who have inspired art history’s masterpieces. From Leonardo da Vinci’s studio to the covers of Vogue\, art historian\, critic\, and writer Ruth Millington uncovers the remarkable role of muses in some of art history’s most well-known and significant works. Delving into the real-life relationships that models have held with the artists who immortalised them\, it will expose the influential and active part they have played and deconstruct reductive stereotypes\, reframing the muse as a momentous and empowered agent of art history. \nThis event is in partnership with Square Peg and Vintage Publishing. \nPreorder a copy of Muse (10% off RRP\, £14.99) signed by the author Ruth Millington and illustrator Dina Razin when you buy your event + book ticket – this can be collected upon arrival. \nImage Credit 1: Muse (2022\, Vintage Publishing) book cover illustration by Dina Razin \nThis event is hosted as part of ROSL ARTS Muse series:\nMuse: The Exhibition\, in partnership with Square Peg\, Vintage Publishing and Sotheby’s Institute of Art\nMuse by Ruth Millington is published by Vintage Publishing (07/04/22)

SUMMARY:Dreams About Stray Cats + Q&A with David Sís
DESCRIPTION:A curious black cat\, which first appeared in Peter Sís’s book ‘The Three Golden Keys‘ edited by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis\, serves as the well-animated narrator of the life of award winning artist\, illustrator and filmaker\, Peter Sís. In charming animated sequences his books including The Wall: Growing Up Behind the Iron Curtain\, come to life retelling Sís´s Odyssey from Prague via his studies at London´s Royal College of Art to forced emigration to the United States. Combining extensive family archives\, animation and testimonies by Milos Forman and Madeleine Allbright\, among others\, the film traces the highly successful career of a talented and multifaceted artist who has written over forty books for children\, illustrated a further sixty\, designed mosaics for the New York subway\, giant tapestries featuring Václav Havel and Martin Luther King\, and murals in Harlem. This is a multilayered biography in which director David Sís sensitively maps his older brother’s inner world and his struggle for the individual’s freedom of artistic expression and the right to their own fantasy . \nPeter Sís is an internationally acclaimed illustrator\, author and filmmaker. He was born in Brno\, Czechoslovakia\, and attended the Academy of Applied Arts in Prague and the Royal College of Art in London. SUMMARY:Nature Interrupted with Celina Teague
DESCRIPTION:Monstrous hybrid beings appear against acid skies and barren landscapes\, creating surreal\, otherworldly scenes that sit uncomfortably between nightmare and dream. Nature Interrupted\, Celina Teague’s fifth solo show at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, takes a deep dive into the dark underbelly of our planet’s biosphere\, where human detritus overcome animals and plants. They appear futuristic\, unwholesome\, and alarming. Still\, at the same time\, Teague’s vibrant colour palette commands presence: we are challenged not only to look but to face up to the reality of what we see. \nIn part\, Teague’s artistic practice is an expression of her guilt and responsibility about not only environmental issues but also political and humanitarian crises. She listens to the news and various podcasts as she paints\, allowing the information to filter through onto the canvas so that each composition possesses a raw sense of urgency. ‘I paint instinctively. It always involves risk\, which I find both liberating and frightening. If I painted on a different day or even at a different hour\, the result would be completely different\,’ she says. \nThe work Still I Rise\, for example\, was made when Teague was listening to reports of the conflict in Afghanistan and specifically about the oppression of women. However\, instead of focusing on the bleakness of the situation\, Teague’s perspective is one of hope\, vitality and strength. In the painting\, women dressed in blue burqas appear like flowers blooming at the end of tall lush vines\, the winding\, interconnected stems suggesting a sense of quiet solidarity. Interestingly\, this is the only work in which humanity and nature appear in harmony: the women are supported by the natural world rather than overwhelming it. However\, this relationship becomes skewed in the painting Swallowed. Here\, the women appear huddled together to form the centre of what looks like a pink flower\, but closer inspection reveals that the petals are\, in fact\, severed tongues. In this way\, the work becomes a powerful visual metaphor for how censorship is used as a form of oppression and entrapment. \nAlthough the other works reflect more broadly on the climate crisis\, the notion of mutilation runs throughout the exhibition. In one of the more surreal compositions\, a giant straw pierces through the centre of a flamingo’s body\, which is itself\, assembled from pink\, fleshy human limbs and organs. A mass of breasts and udders replace its feathers while its foot is a claw-like human hand. The strange yellow glow of the sky suggests a sickness or toxicity\, and an egg lies fried on the cracked\, dry ground as if baked in the sun. Like all of Teague’s works\, the bright colour palette is somewhat misleading: we’re unsure whether to laugh or gasp. Is this a horror or a comedy? \nThis deliberate ambiguity creates a strong sense of unease that reflects both the subject matter and Teague’s approach to image-making. ‘My work is sometimes labelled as activist art\, which I find uncomfortable because painting about these issues doesn’t feel like enough\,’ she says. ‘We have all the facts easily accessible to us\, but we still just sit back and watch what’s happening most of the time.’ Teague returns to this notion of ‘armchair activism’ in each of her exhibitions by painting an image of an armchair\, often encompassing elements from the other works to create a sense of unity while also highlighting the irony of her role as an artist. However\, it would be amiss to ignore the power of the image. Teague’s paintings command our gaze and draw our attention to the politics of seeing. Confronted by these strange\, unsettling scenes\, we can deny neither awareness nor responsibility.

SUMMARY:Kunstkamera + Intro by Gareth Evan
DESCRIPTION:This animated movie is part of the 26th Made in Prague Festival organised by the Czech Centre London. The popular multi-genre festival is back again for its 26th edition. Representing one of the oldest national celebrations of European culture in the UK\, the festival presents an exciting programme covering film\, music\, science\, visual art and literature in various venues across London and beyond. Take your pick and immerse yourself in Czech culture this fall. \nA tantalising view of the Czech surrealist and filmmaker Jan Svankmajer’s private collection of artefacts and objects\, full of beauty and magic. In Kunstkamera\, Czech surrealist Jan Švankmajer opens the door to his Horní Staňkov Castle\, inviting us into his home where the living space is intricately and organically intertwined with an exhibition space filled with installations\, paintings\, puppets and products of nature\, but also an unmade bed\, his bedside table\, an open bottle of beer and a dog bowl. Horní Staňkov is home to the eclectic private collection that Švankmajer has built throughout his life\, inspired by the kunstkameras of Rudolf II and André Breton. Now providing a tantalising view into his world through the sequence of objects and an interpretation of the collection\, Svankmajer’s inner landscape is captured on film for posterity and shared with his fans from all over the world. A treat not to be missed.

SUMMARY:SMALL WORLDS - TOM DE FRESTON
DESCRIPTION:No 20 Arts is delighted to present SMALL WORLDS\, the inaugural exhibition of Tom de Freston’s drawings. Long an admirer of Maurice Sendak\, Jon Klassen\, and Leonora Carrington\, and having built a career around the construction of multimedia worlds\, it is little wonder that de Freston has turned his hand to illustration in the past five years. From jointly creating stories around miraculous animals with his wife\, novelist Kiran Millwood Hargrave\, to being selected to make work for the first illustrated edition of David Almond’s iconic Skellig\, he has brought his full range of process to paper. Monoprinting\, collaging\, maquettes\, and painting combined with interplays of scale and texture give each finished work depth and intrigue. His fierce belief in an image’s ability to communicate complex narrative is on full display here\, made no less complex by the size\, simplicity of line\, and colour palette.

SUMMARY:Flux Exhibition 10th Edition
DESCRIPTION:FLUX Exhibition is proud to present its 10th edition\, a 4-day art extravaganza showcasing the work of 80 contemporary artists\, held at 178 St James – Piccadilly in London. Curated by Lisa Gray\, the founder of FLUX\, with her open and unbiased approach to contemporary art this prodigious event will feature the most talented\, the most creative dynamic painters\, sculptors\, and performance artists. Collectors\, curators and art lovers can gather to discover the unexpected\, that unique conversation piece and to be inspired by an exhibition that represents an opportunity to discover the very best emerging and established artists\, showcasing international talent in a collaborative\, inclusive show right in the heart of London. \n\n\n\nLisa Gray has an outstanding ability to select and curate a diverse group of gifted artists on the path to being the big names of tomorrow\, creating exhibitions that naturally flow covering many diversities of contemporary art. Flux has established itself as the platform for contemporary artists to be discovered and to be part of an exceptional\, inspirational art event. “FLUX Exhibition is a must-attend event for contemporary art lovers\, where you can discover some of the most exciting and innovative artists in the world\,” says founder Lisa Gray. “Don’t miss this fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of contemporary art.” With live music\, hosted by fetish cabaret star Marnie Scarlet\, and performances by drag legend Pretentious Dross\, the FLUX opening night is going to be one to remember! \n\n\n\nFeatured artists include Gary Nicholls a technical artist with a camera rather than a photographer. Inspired by the way Caravaggio and Vermeer were able to focus the viewer on the subject of their art by the use of light\, Nicholls creates a series of themed images printed on Chromaluxe\, each to usher the viewer into the sacred arena that is his imagination\, challenging them to fantasize about a magical space that is the theatre of art. \n\n\n\nKohlben Vodden is an Australian-born self-taught artist living and working in London\, UK. His obsession with psychological concepts such as identity and aesthetics are central to his artistic practice which he defines as visual storytelling that coexists as conceptual and expressionist art. Vodden enjoys the juxtaposition of using traditional mediums such as oil paint in uncharacteristically controlled techniques to create intensely contemporary aesthetic images that could\, upon first glance\, be considered digital in origin. \n\n\n\nHis work has is recognised across the UK and internationally\, and has been included in exhibitions in Abu Dhabi\, Milan\, New York\, and London \n\n\n\nAll guests who make a purchase at FLUX Exhibition will receive a Limited-Edition hand-signed artwork worth £200 by artist Catarina Diaz\, offering an opportunity to own a unique piece of contemporary art. Diaz is a London-based artist who has become an established figure in the art world\, having received multiple awards and recognition from the President of Portugal for her exceptional talent. \n\n\n\nAs well as the exhibition Flux will be selling a range of art gifts\, accessories\, and prints – perfect for the Xmas shopping season. \n\n\n\nThe event will run from 7th to 10th Dec 2023\, and visitors can book FREE tickets on Eventbrite and the official websites http://www.fluxexhibition.com and  http://www.thefluxreview.com.Press responses to be sent to: lisa@thefluxreview.com
