SUMMARY:Echoes Afar: Qu Lei Lei In Conversation
DESCRIPTION:Book your tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/qu-lei-lei-in-conversation-tickets-53584990148 \nFREE FOR STUDENTS! \nThe talk will be followed by a drinks/canapé reception generously supported by 3812 Gallery \nJoin us for a panel discussion and fascinating insight into leading contemporary ink painter\, Qu Lei Lei’s life journey from China to London. The artist will be in conversation with British Museum Basil Gray curator\, Dr Luk Yu-ping\, and Sotheby’s Institute\, Dr Katie Hill. Moderated by Pamela Kember\, Head of Arts and Learning at Asia House. \n“From form\, sound\, soul\, human nature to time\, Art itself is the echo of life.” Qu Lei Lei \nQu Lei Lei is renowned for reinventing the application of traditional Chinese medium- brush\, ink and xuan paper to draw portraits of faces\, hands and bodies. In his work\, the application of light and shadow is very different from other traditional works. Qu Lei Lei\, a “master of chiaroscuro ink\,” an effect of contrasted light and shadow\, has chosen a harder path to echo Western painting and Chinese ink art on a technical level. His works of brush\, ink\, light and shadow depict full-size nude figures in a return to a pure pursuit of art; classicism mixed with a modern spirit where his pursuit of light is reminiscent of European Renaissance paintings laid down in Chinese ink on scrolled xuan paper; an evolvement of the language of Chinese ink painting for a modern world. \n“I hope to use my own forms to create a quality akin to sculpture\,” states Qu Lei Lei to explain his “perception of beauty” as he creates hauntingly beautiful marble-like forms with the softness of flowers\, plants and vine patterns. Creating contrasts between structure and texture yet touching a harmony between circle and line\, motion and stillness. The late Chinese scholar Michael Sullivan has called Qu Lei Lei’s skilful interpretation of the integration between Western realism and Eastern conceptual imagery a “new literati painting” that best approximates the Chinese literati ideal. \nThis event is presented in collaboration with 3812 Gallery\, and in association with Qu Leilei’s latest solo exhibition taking place at the 3812 Gallery’s London and Hong Kong venues. \n————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– \nAbout Qu Lei Lei \nThe son of Qu Bo\, a renowned and highly regarded composer\, Qu Lei Lei was born in 1951 in Hei Long Jiang province China. He lives and works in London. \nHe was a founding member of the Stars Group\, the first-ever contemporary art movement to appear in China creating a new challenging artistic language. Regarded as one of China’s leading contemporary artists\, in recent years\, he has created four major projects in form of a combination of paintings and installations: The First Half of My Life\, Here and Now – to Face a New Century\, Everyone’s Life is An Epic and Brush\, Ink\, Light\, Shadow. These have been exhibited both nationally and internationally at venues including The British Museum\, the Ashmolean Museum\, The National Art Museum of China\, the Venice Biennale\, and the Beijing Biennale. His works – “Lei Feng” of “Empires Series” and “Journey” of “Facing the Future” Series are collected by The British Museum in 2015. \nAbout Dr Luk Yu-Ping \nDr Luk Yu-ping is the Basil Gray Curator: Chinese Painting\, Prints and Central Asia at the British Museum. Previously\, Yu-ping was a curator at the Victoria and Albert Museum\, focusing on Chinese ceramics and jewellery. She was also Project Curator for the British Museum’s exhibition Ming: 50 years that changed China and Assistant Professor at Lingnan University\, Hong Kong. She completed her DPhil in the History of Art at the University of Oxford. Her thesis was a detailed study of a monumental Daoist scroll related to an empress from late 15th-century China. She is now focusing her attention on researching and developing the Chinese painting\, prints and Central Asian collections at the British Museum. \nAbout Dr Katie Hill \nDr Katie Hill is Program Director\, MA Modern and Contemporary Asian Art\, at Sotheby’s Institute\, London. Dr Hill is a regularly invited speaker for exhibitions and events in numerous institutions and galleries. Her recent work includes In Conversation’ with Ai Weiwei\, Tate Modern\, selector panel/author\, Art of Change\, New Directions from China\, Hayward Gallery\, London\, and specialist advisor/author for The Chinese Art Book (Phaidon 2013). She also co-edited a special issue of the journal Visual Art Practice on Contemporary Chinese Art and Criticality\, published in 2012. She is director of OCCA\, Office of Contemporary Chinese Art\, an art consultancy promoting Chinese artists in the UK. \n————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————– \nThis event is part of the Asia House 2019 Winter Arts and Learning Programme\, a completely unique initiative in the UK in presenting a pan-Asian artistic and cultural programme with a scope of more than 40 countries in the region. Through our programme of events on arts\, culture and education we act as a catalyst for the discovery of the diverse arts and cultures of Asia and the Asian diaspora\, and serve as a bridge of understanding between the UK and Asia. \nSign up to our mailing list for all the latest on this year’s events\, and visit our Eventbrite profile to book more tickets!

SUMMARY:Roy's Art Fair
DESCRIPTION:Roy’s Art Fair is back and raring to go after sadly having to postpone our April fair. \nOur next fair will be in our new edgy venue The Boiler House on the bustling artistic hub Brick Lane in East London. There will be 80 emerging and established artists on display\, both new to our fair as well as previous artists showing their new work. Over our 4 day event\, we continue our focus on accessibility by keeping Roy’s Art Fair entrance FREE for all. \nRoy’s Art Fair wants to support the recovery of London’s cultural sector\, the creative arts and our artists. \nThe safety of both exhibitors and the public are our main priority at the 6th Roy’s Art Fair\, which we will be going above and beyond to ensure. With the unfortunate cancellation of International art fairs\, due to travel restrictions for international clientele\, Roy’s will aim to deliver an exciting and safe UK Art Fair. \nThe team at Roy’s Art Fair are all artists in their own right and offer their invaluable expertise and support to both emerging and established artists as they navigate the art world. Their focus is primarily on developing a community led spirit initiated by artists to connect directly with the public and promote both the artists’ and buyers’ interests first. \nWhat sets us aside from the host of other art fairs now popping up around London is our comfortable yet energetic atmosphere that allows visitors to connect with artists and invest in artwork they love. Roy’s Art Fair does this at an approachable level\, whether you’re an avid art collector or a first-time buyer and with our free entry\, we welcome all.

Josef Zlamal joined her on the voyage and the duo began creating a body of work as visual mementos of the time spent abroad and of the experiences they were exposed to whilst living and working in Sweden\, the USA and France\, their relocation back to London and their reconnection with their Czech and European identities. \nAdmission to the exhibition is free\, but entry must be booked in advance: https://bit.ly/ToTheEdge_EventbriteSlots\nOne ticket is valid for a maximum of 5 people from the same household. \nAndrea Vytlačilová (*1996)\nAndrea Vytlačilová is a young fashion designer and Central Saint Martins student\, born in Eastern Bohemia\, whose work moves between fashion\, textiles\, illustration and photography. She has worked for fashion houses including Acne Studios\, Marc Jacobs and Kenzo. Recently\, she was selected as one of Forbes Czechia’s 30 under30. Andrea is currently in her final year of studies\, working on her fashion collection and a multidisciplinary project called ‘My Bohemian Tale‘ rediscovering Czech cultural heritage and resurrecting the disappearing textile industry and traditional crafts.\nhttp://www.andreavytlacilova.com \nJosef Zlamal (*1983)\nJosef Zlamal\, born in Šternberk\, is among the most promising of contemporary Czech artists. His work has been exhibited in the company of both contemporary and classic masters (e.g. Otto Dix\, Lucas Cranach\, Daniel Richter and Marc Quinn)\, in private institutions and leading public museums (e.g. the Power Station of Art\, Shanghai and the Museum der bildenden Künste Leipzig). His paintings\, drawings\, sculptures and films confront the viewer with a world of uncertainty. He searches for light through darkness\, offering new perspectives on history and geopolitical issues connected with human existence.\nhttp://www.josef-zlamal.com \nCORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) Update\nWe follow our guideline principles and measures which are based on the UK government advice and regulations and which are regularly reviewed when government guidelines change. SUMMARY:Solo Show "Arrêt Sur Image" by Rebecca Brodskis
DESCRIPTION:Thousands of faces flicker in and out of our field of vision as we move through the world\, but some imprint themselves vividly into our minds as we imagine and ascribe stories onto the interactions that we witness. For her upcoming solo show Arrêt sur image at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, London Bridge\, Paris-based artist Rebecca Brodskis presents a series of arresting portraits that suspend time through both their making and their surreal composition. Amidst the rush and blur of contemporary life\, these works appear hauntingly still and precise\, allowing the viewer to enjoy a slower\, deeper kind of contemplation. \nHaving grown up in a family of filmmakers\, Brodskis cites cinema and particularly\, the aesthetics of the twenties and thirties as a major influence on the evolution of her painting style. As such\, there is a distinct elegance to her paintings whilst her characters often appear to have stepped out of another era with neat bob haircuts\, block coloured clothing and sharply-defined silhouettes\, posed with their heads tilted\, hands on hip. And yet\, despite the initial familiarity of the image\, Brodskis’ scenes are difficult to locate within the ‘real’ world; the glossy\, smooth backgrounds are suggestive of a neutralised\, graphical space whilst the characters’ gaze is uniformly blank and unseeing. The work entitled Theodor\, Jacob and I\, for example\, depicts three characters overlapping against an ochre background. Whilst their faces are shadowed and defined\, there is spectral quality to their ashen skin tone as if they are fading from existence. \nThis evocation of mystery once again relates to cinema\, and storytelling more generally\, in which observation and the imagination collide to distort the natural order of things. ‘I like the idea that when you stop on a frame of the film\, suddenly\, that frame takes on the importance\,’ she says. For Brodskis\, painting has a similar effect\, but whilst film reflects the movement of the eye\, her portraits allow the image to unfold at a rhythm that opposes fast-paced consumption\, and redirects perception. The slow\, physical process of oil painting is visible in the precise lines and the considered choice of colours that add a sense of poetic balance to the composition. \nAmongst the most intriguing of the portraits are those inspired by people with the skin pigment condition vitiligo. The artist recalls a particular week in Paris\, when she kept passing people with vitiligo whom she ‘found so beautiful I had to paint them.’ In the resulting works – Theora and Above the difference – Brodskis has played with the background colours and skin tones to heighten the surrealism of the image whilst the choice of her subject reflects on the past and recent history of portraiture which typically prioritises conventional notions of beauty. \nMany of Brodskis’ paintings reflect on the relationship between different generations\, and in this series\, there are several striking depictions of parenthood. Each of the paintings La paternite #1 and La paternite #2\, for example\, depicts a father holding onto the heel of his child who is curved over his head. As is typical of Brodskis’ work\, the pose is purposefully playful and performative\, and whilst the image is\, in many ways\, detached from reality\, the physical closeness of father and child implies a sense of tenderness. In a similar way\, hand gestures are also revealing of a deeper\, emotional narrative in many of the paintings\, imbuing the characters with a layer of subjectivity. In the painting entitled En attendant l’orage\, for example\, the mother’s hand grips the edge of the pale orange wall; the child on her shoulders balances one hand on the mother’s head while the other reaches for something beyond the canvas\, in the distance. \nIn this way\, the portraits\, seemingly disconnected from their context\, invite us to invent our own narratives much like we might imagine the lives of people we observe from a seat in a cafe or on a bus. Arrêt sur image is not only a collection of cinematic freeze frames\, but also and perhaps more significantly\, a series of beginnings.

Always cheerful and friendly and full of adventures\, Little Mole has been enchanting children and adults alike in more than 80 countries since its inception in 1957 and even made into space when US astronaut Andrew Feustel took a Little Mole toy on the board of Endeavour. \nJoin us and Little Mole on some of his adventures: \nLittle Mole and the Car (1963)\nLittle Mole and the Rocket (1965)\nLittle Mole and the Green Star (1969)\nLittle Mole in the ZOO (1969)\nLittle Mole and the Umbrella (1971)\nLittle Mole as a Painter (1972) \nhttps://dafilms.com/film/12708-zdenek-miler-little-mole \nThe collection of shorts will be available via the link above for free after registration\, only between February 21st – 28th. \nZdeněk Miler (21 February 1921 – 30 November 2011) was a Czech animator and illustrator best known for his Little Mole character. After graduating from Prague’s Academy of Arts\, Architecture and Design Miler went to work with the father of Czech animation\, Jiří Trnka. Miler’s first short About the Millionaire Who Stole the Sun (1948) was based on poem by Jirí Wolker. A great admirer of Walter Disney\, Miler developed the Little Mole character for his educational short How the Mole Got His Pants (1957)\, which won the Silver Lion award at the Venice Film Festival in Italy. More than 60 shorts featuring Little Mole soon followed. Miler has also made an animated series of seven films about a cricket\, illustrated a number of books but it was Little Mole he kept returning to until his retirement in 2001.

SUMMARY:MAPA Fine Art presents: ‘Still @live’ Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:MAPA Fine Art is a Nomadic art gallery with our next exhibition (Still @live) opening in London.\nAbout this event\nMAPA FINE ART IS PLEASED TO PRESENT STILL @LIVE\, A GROUP EXHIBITION FEATURING SIX EMERGING INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS WORKING WITHIN THE MEDIUM OF FIGURATIVE PAINTING. THEIR WORK SPEAKS TO THE HUMAN CONDITION IN THESE UNCERTAIN TIMES\, BUT ALSO COMMENTS ON OUR PRIVATE (AND TIMELESS) DESIRES\, SECRETS AND ANXIETIES. DIVIDED INTO TWO PARTS\, THE EXHIBITION MIRRORS THE PRESENT STATE OF THE WORLD BY TAKING PLACE ONLINE AT FIRST\, CONNECTING US THROUGH TECHNOLOGY\, AND EMERGING IN A PHYSICAL SPACE IN LONDON IN THE SPRING OF 2021. \nThe year 2021 might seem like the promise of a new beginning\, but will the mere addition of a number make our lives any better? The emotions we experienced last year and our collective yearning for change throughout the pandemic have become integral parts of who we are. It seems that what has emerged from multiple lockdowns and widespread isolation\, is a globally shared experience of solitude. \nThis unexpected commonality\, a collective cluster of emotions\, is resonating even in the virtual space. Though physically separated\, we are still here\, and art remains one of the fundamental ways we can investigate our inner states and relate to each other. The expressive language of the works in this exhibition can serve as a guide on an introspective journey\, to a higher sense of unity which can be fully experienced once we can finally meet again in physical places. \nCurators: Jindra Bucan & Marc Prats
