SUMMARY:Species survival: How AI can help conservation
DESCRIPTION:This talk is part of the 26th Made in Prague Festival organised by Czech Centre London. The popular multi-genre festival is back again for its 26th edition. Representing one of the oldest national celebrations of European culture in the UK\, the festival presents an exciting programme covering film\, music\, science\, visual art and literature in various venues across London and beyond. Take your pick and immerse yourself in Czech culture this fall. \nTo protect nonhuman life on Earth\, we need to give diverse life forms a digital focus. There is no digital platform for wild animals\, trees\, or insects\, and no way for them to make themselves known to us online. \n\nJoin Jonathan Ledgard as he explores new AI solutions that can help represent nonhumans\, aid their survival and demonstrate more completely to us their way of moving through the world. \nIn this talk\, discover these interspecies services and how we can use fast-evolving AI to help prevent existential risk to nonhuman life on Earth.

SUMMARY:呼吸 Hūxī Respiration Art Exhibition and Live Performances
DESCRIPTION:After several years of a world pandemic\, where has your breath has taken you? Is it a form of escapism\, a little breathing space to relax\, get out of your own head and pursue a mindful experience? How important is it to performative phrases that express tension? \nBreath is a discrepant engagement across passageways and afterlives\, for to respire is an opening for life and death and the exquisite possibility of escape. \nTo mark the start of a new lunar year\, Goldsmiths Confucius Institute will be hosting an intriguing new art exhibition exploring respiration in relation to the Chinese characters 呼吸 Hūxī. \nIntermittent live performances will be taking place throughout the duration of the exhibition and Covid-friendly refreshments will also be available to take home. \nThis exhibition will present a variety of mediums (including but not limited to experimental videography\, photography\, painting\, sculpture\, physical installation and textile) from a range of contemporary artists\, including external artists as well as Goldsmith’s Art\, Music\, Design and Theatre and Performance students\, and will investigate the importance of respiration in creative practice and the challenges of being resistant. \nInhale and exhale are seen as opposites and equals at the same time\, influx-and-efflux marks how’s movements oscillate between porous extremities and radiating interiorities. The dynamic impulses happening across linguistic patterns. \n呼吸 has resonances with the experience of being simultaneously inside and outside the scene of respiration\, both shifts recalibrate the self\, the other\, the properties and subjects involved with them. Like an otherwise arranged by syntactical reinvention\, or the influx-and-efflux of words across sentences\, waves\, and worlds\, 呼吸 is a sonic entanglement. It is a call and response beckoned by ideological impulse\, political determination\, and social sound that travels across disparate life forces. \n呼吸 Hūxī – Respiration \n11th February – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths\nAfternoon Session: 4pm – 5.30pm\nEvening Session: 6pm – 7.30pm \n12th February – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths\nEvening Session 6pm – 7.30pm \n13th February – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths\n6pm – 7.30pm – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths \nCovid Regulations\nParticipants are encouraged to take a lateral flow test prior to arrival\, required to wear a mask throughout the exhibition and maintain social distancing and relevant health and safety regulations. \nThis is event is free for Goldsmiths staff and students and £5 for non-staff/students. Please sign up via the booking link at the top of the page to secure your place. \nPhoto: Jiaying Gao

SUMMARY:David Gaberle: Looking for Prague
DESCRIPTION:Private view & artist talk: 16 November 2021\, 6 pm \nAn outdoor exhibition of the work of Czech street photographer and worldwide ambassador for FUJIFILM David Gaberle captures everyday Prague’s streets. Following his critically applauded Metropolight project in which he explored world cities from London to Tokyo\, Gaberle turned his camera on his native city of Prague. After covering more than 2000 km of streets and six months in making the result is a subjective\, almost intimate documentation of Prague offering an untraditional view of places away from the hustle and bustle of tourists. \nComprehensive artist statement by David Gaberle for his photographic exhibition:\n“Taking photographs while travelling is often an easy endeavour because everything seems new and exciting. However\, the novelty is seductive\, and we tend to exoticise what we see and perceive. As a result\, the photographs tend to say more about us as visitors than about the places we are trying to portray.\nWhen I returned to live in Prague\, I focused my camera on the cityscape outside of the city’s historical centre. I walked many of the same streets repeatedly in the hope that I would learn to find the seemingly mundane and ordinary to be interesting. After a few months\, I stopped wishing for extraordinary moments to happen in front of my lens\, and I started to notice the textures\, the subtle tones of colours and the rhythm of objects in the camera’s frame. I slowly began to see the city as a collage of shapes and colours. It felt like progress\, yet I still cannot shake off the feeling that I am not looking at Prague entirely my way.\nOften\, I think that everything the camera and the eye perceive is simply a reflection of light that bounces off the surface. The implication seems to be that we never really see things for what they are. Sometimes I feel like I can sense what that suggests\, but the consequences seem so harrowing that I have not yet found the courage to explore what it means.” \nDAVID GABERLE\n“David Gaberle underlines with light exactly that spot within the composition that he wants to draw attention to\, or lights up the colour that is the essence of the whole image. David presses the shutter often at the moment when the sun’s rays light the small area of the street or touch the façade of a house at the last moment. It is as if he takes pleasure from this nervy borderline moment when the well-lit streets turn just for an instant into a stage.” Tomáš Pospěch\, Curator \nPart of 25th Made in Prague Festival (7 November – 7 December 2021) \nFree\, registration on https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/david-gaberle-looking-for-prague-private-view-artist-talk-tickets-196392554417?aff=odeimcmailchimp&mc_cid=b90125e016&mc_eid=970f7c2a4f

These are the eccentric visions of Belgian artist Joachim Lambrechts who plays with composition and form to evoke a sense of childlike joy and spontaneity. While the artist typically employs a vibrant colour palette\, his latest solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, London\, entitled Siluetas\, presents a bold new series of textural\, monochromatic works\, marking newfound confidence and aesthetic purity. \n \n  \n  \nLambrechts’ practice embraces and celebrates free creative expression. He never plans his compositions\, instead preferring to allow the image to reveal itself through the act of mark-making. Although this new series of black and white paintings express a certain restraint\, the images retain a powerful sense of dynamism which reflects the artist’s spontaneous process. With these works\, he began by pasting pieces of coloured paper onto the canvas to create a sense of texture and depth before applying layers of black paint. Broad brush strokes and lines of white colour were then used to delineate the outlines of objects and animals so that from a distance\, they appear as silhouettes or shadows. At the same time\, closer inspection reveals flashes of colour breaking through the surface where the artist has scratched or scraped away the paint. This creates a palpable tension between mark-making and erasure\, movement and stillness\, artistic abandon and creative control.\nFor this latest body of work\, Lambrechts took inspiration from early cave paintings\, which convey complex narratives and emotions despite their simplistic style. Similarly\, the artist has deliberately restricted his lines to what is only necessary to obtain a particular shape or form. The painting Pantera Negra\, for example\, depicts a black cat (or panther) whose body mainly consists of a large black shape with four vertical lines indicating the outlines of its front legs. As with all artworks\, Lambrechts’ signature graphical style simultaneously clarifies and distorts our understanding of the image. The cat’s shape appears both childlike and surreal\, just as in the painting Pegasus\, we can immediately identify the mythical horse while viewing the creature from a seemingly impossible perspective. All four of its legs appear along the same line\, bent and twisted into unnatural angles. “For me\, painting is not so much wanting to convey a message\, but rather a search for shapes\, lines and colour and seeing what possibilities they offer me\,” explains Lambrechts. At the same time\, this approach invites the viewer to engage more creatively as we are given greater freedom to interpret the compositions. \nWith some of the works\, the artist guides or destabilises our interpretation by incorporating text into the image. The words sometimes act as direct visual labels\, such as Black Eagle or Lions\, while others appear as witty modern-day aphorisms. The painting When the owl wakes up at night to kill\, we sleep\, for example\, depicts an owl seemingly in a kind of trance state\, its eyes filled with white circles and its wings extended while the text forms a literal frame or border around the edge of the canvas. In this way\, Lambrechts questions his role as an image-maker by demonstrating how our understanding of artwork is shaped by the composition itself and its framing and external contexts such as titles\, accompanying text\, and the surroundings in which the work appears. At the same time\, however\, he draws us closer to the image by inviting us to engage more actively and intimately with the artistic process.\nThese complex embedded layers of tension and bold visual contrasts are what make the artworks so compelling. By the very nature of paint\, they are static scenes while simultaneously bursting with raw\, exuberant creativity. \n  \n \n  \nAbout Joachim Lambrechts\nJoachim Lambrechts (born in 1986) is a renowned urban artist from Antwerp\, Belgium. In 2001 he began his studies at an art school in Antwerp. Later he got very involved with the graffiti and street art scene in his home city\, and in 2004 he distanced himself from his academic education and left art school without graduating. In the years that followed\, Joachim spent a lot of time experimenting with various approaches to graffiti and became quickly integrated into the Belgian street art scene. Since 2010\, painting on canvas has been Joachim’s primary focus and creating street art across Europe. \nIn contrast to his murals\, Joachim never makes preliminary studies or sketches when he starts working on a canvas. Yet\, paradoxically\, he feels more accessible within the four walls of his studio\, which is reflected in his paintings. They result from a more spontaneous process\, and as such\, possess a sense of urgency and innocence.

SUMMARY:Terra Nexus
DESCRIPTION:A labyrinth of 17 interconnected artist worlds\, questioning the role of The Human As Part of Ecology. An immersive exhibition designed with social distancing. Curated by Gabriella Sonabend. \nSol Bailey-barker\, Rebecca Bellantoni\, Alice Bucknell\, Alice Cazenave\, Tom Chisholm\, Helena Doyle\, Finchittida Finch\, Hannah Fletcher\, Tom Lines\, Amanda Lwin\, Cristiano Di Martino\, Charlotte Osborne\, Andrea Phillips\, Catriona Robertson\, Wr Saunders\, Sara Trillo\, Triptych\, Food Of War (Omar Castañeda & Hernan Barros)\, Jack Warne\, Emma Jane Whitton\, Wumzum \nTerra Nexus is an immersive experience featuring 25 artists produced by Proposition Studios. It invites the audience into a multi-sensory labyrinthine of interconnected worlds to unravel a story which weaves together diverse insights into our relationship with the biosphere. \nStarting with the fundamental idea that we need to shift away from a narrative of human dominion and independence in order to protect the biosphere\, installations explore: the necessity of living soil; the perpetual migration of species; the cascading threat of impending extinctions; ways to reconnect with nature; conflict arising from depleted resources; the future of cities and how humans will live within them. From the perspectives of insects and animals\, through the eyes of scientists\, artificial intelligence\, plant life\, ancient cultures and conflicting contemporary viewpoints; Terra Nexus is a wormhole of ideas. \nWarping sensory experiences\, excavating\, weaving between co-existing timelines and suggesting alternative histories; this is the first of a series of immersive projects by Proposition Studios asking the viewer to raise their own questions about THE HUMAN AS PART OF ECOLOGY and what that means today and for future generations. \nIn preparation for this project the exhibiting artists took part in an intensive research residency\, visiting sites where human intervention has dramatically increased biodiversity while providing for human needs: Martin Crawford’s Forest Garden in Devon\, Knepp Rewilding in Sussex and Prof. Wolfe’s Wakelyns Agroforestry in Suffolk while also meeting the renowned science writer and trailblazing food campaigner Colin Tudge in Oxford. \nThese world experts who are working to regenerate landscapes and address global food problems have inspired artworks that respond to their cutting edge science\, ecological agriculture\, environmental activism and deeply researched and practical ideas.
