SUMMARY:Identity: A Czech Graphic Design Love Story
DESCRIPTION:From New York to Prague: Nicholas Lowry’s Journey Through Czech Identity \n\nRenowned NY-based auctioneer and passionate collector Nicholas Lowry embarks on a captivating journey across the Czech Republic\, uncovering the visual and cultural threads that define Czech national identity. Swapping the auction house for adventure\, Czech-American Lowry—instantly recognizable in his signature tartan suit—travels from the vibrant streets of Prague to the design-rich cities of Zlín\, Litomyšl\, Brno\, and Pilsen. Along the way\, he delves into the legacies of visionary figures like Tomáš Baťa\, Josef Váchal\, Alfons Mucha\, and Ladislav Sutnar\, while also indulging in one of the country’s greatest exports—Pilsner beer. \nHis exploration takes unexpected turns\, from South Moravia’s vineyards\, where he examines the artistry of wine labels\, to the scenic hiking trails marked by the Czech Tourist Club’s innovative wayfinding system. Lowry also connects with today’s leading graphic designers\, including Petr Babák\, Martin Pecina\, and Aleš Najbrt\, bridging past and present in Czech visual culture. \nBut this journey is more than just an exploration—it’s personal. As he traces the evolution of Czech design\, Lowry uncovers a piece of his own history: his great-uncle founded the Primeros factory in Prague\, a story intertwined with the nation’s graphic identity. Through humor\, curiosity\, and a collector’s keen eye\, he offers a fresh perspective on what shapes a country’s visual soul. \nKateřina Mikulcová\, Petr Smělík\, Czech Republic 2024\, 85 mins \nUK Premiere\n\nAdmission: £5 (+ Eventbrite fee)\nBook here: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/identity-a-czech-graphic-design-love-story-tickets-1248206973659?aff=oddtdtcreator

SUMMARY:Identity - The Story of Czech Graphic Design
DESCRIPTION:Graphic design—including posters\, books\, magazines\, logos\, orientation systems\, and even national symbols—plays a crucial role in shaping the identity of every nation. For the Czech Republic (and formerly Czechoslovakia)\, the history of graphic design since the early 20th century has been particularly complex. The Czechs had to fight for their own statehood\, endure two world wars\, navigate two totalitarian regimes\, and transition from a socialist planned economy to a market economy. \n\nThrough original works and reproductions\, visitors to the exhibition will explore the most significant achievements in Czech graphic design and learn about their creators. Accompanied by detailed texts\, the exhibition positions these works within their broader cultural\, historical\, and political contexts\, showcasing the power of graphic design to influence society and reflect societal changes. \nCurated by  Filip Blažek and Linda Kudrnovská\, in collaboration with commissioner David Korecký\, the exhibition is part of the multi-genre project Identity – The Story of Czech Graphic Design(www.projektidentita.cz). This ambitious initiative also includes a seven-part television series\, a feature film\, and a bilingual monograph (published in Czech and English) under the same title. \nThe traveling exhibition Identity is a collaboration between by Typo\, the Mowshe Studio\, the Museum of Literature\, and the Czech Centres network. The graphic design was undertaken by the Marvil Studio\, while the exhibition design was created by Adam Blažek\, Jan Kloss\, and Matěj Činčera from Okolo. \n\nEXHIBITION OPENING\nWith curators Filip Blažek and Linda Kudrnovská\nFriday 28 February 2025\, 18:30 – 20:30\nFree entry\, REGISTER HERE\nEXHIBITION DATES: 28 February – 30 June 2025\nVENUE\nVitrínka Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n30 Kensington Palace Gardens\, London\, W8 4QY\n&\nBouda Gallery\, Czech Centre London\n132 Palace Gardens Terrace\, Kensington\, London\, W8 4RT\nOPENING HOURS:\nTue – Fri 10am – 5pm\nor by appointment – +44 (0) 207 836 3669

SUMMARY:Anna Hulačová at Each Place Its Own Mind - Free Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Edel Assanti presents Each Place Its Own Mind (17 January – 15 March 2025)\, featuring Czech artist Anna Hulačová among eight international artists. Hulačová’s innovative work bridges ecological themes with artistic experimentation\, offering a profound meditation on humanity’s bond with nature. \n\nHulačová contributes a series of striking concrete busts with honeycomb interiors\, created in collaboration with bees during their swarming season. These sculptures symbolize the ancient interconnection between humans and bees\, evoking a hybrid organism that reflects the porous relationship between body and consciousness. The pieces embody the exhibition’s theme of interwoven experiences across species\, exploring the shared psyche of all beings inhabiting a place. \nEach Place Its Own Mind engages with ideas from David Abram’s The Spell of the Sensuous (1996)\, reimagining humanity’s relationship with the natural world. It showcases an interdisciplinary mix of drawing\, sculpture\, film\, and installation\, addressing ecological\, cultural\, and ancestral narratives. Alongside Hulačová’s work\, the exhibition includes pieces by Mirtha Dermisache\, Noémie Goudal\, Sky Hopinka\, and others\, fostering a dialogue about the enchantment of the world and the interconnected web of existence. \nThe exhibition opens with a private view on 16 January 2025\, from 6-8 pm. \nAnna Hulačová (b. 1984\, Sušice\, Czech Republic) graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts\, Prague (2012). She lives and works in Prague. Her work has been shown internationally\, including at the National Gallery\, Prague\, Czech Republic; Centre Pompidou\, Paris\, France; Baltic Triennial\, Vilnius\, Lithuania; Meyer Riegger\, Berlin\, Germany; and the Louis Vuitton Foundation\, Paris\, France. \n\nOpening hours: Tuesday to Saturday 11am – 6pm

SUMMARY:Making the West End a fashion destination
DESCRIPTION:Learn more about how Jewish designers innovated\, defied expectations and transformed the West End. \n\n\n\nJoin us and learn more about the stories of Jewish designers\, makers and retailers who made London’s West End a fashion destination.
