SUMMARY:Access + Ability in the Arts\, Design & Technology- Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Access for all in the arts\nWith Japan hosting the Paralympic Games this year\, the world’s attention has been on disability. This exhibition highlights the people\, programmes and products that change how we think about access for all in the arts and everyday life. \nThe exhibition features British arts organisations Extant\, Graeae Theatre Company and Intoart and their recent interactions with Japan and collaborations with Japanese artists. \nCeramicist IWAMOTO Ikuko and architect YAMANAKA Akira\, both based in the UK\, show the importance of incorporating a broad-minded approach to design by explaining how their work has become more inclusive. \nIn a unique project with the Japanese Gallery Kensington to show the possibilities of reformatted art\, UCL Mechanical Engineering has transformed a woodblock print by artist KANEKO Kunio into 3D art. Visitors to the exhibition will also see how craftsman MIYABO Katsuyuki and inventor MIYAKE Seiichi have helped to improve the lives of disabled people.

SUMMARY:FLUX Exhibition - Design District London
DESCRIPTION:This autumn FLUX Exhibition will present a twenty-four-day event showcasing the work of 50 contemporary artists. FLUX Exhibition is London’s leading event to discover the most talented\, dynamic painters\, sculptors\, and performance artists. \nFLUX has established itself as the platform for contemporary artists to be discovered and part of an exceptional\, inspirational art event. Held at The Design District – Greenwich Peninsula in London and curated by Lisa Gray\, the founder of FLUX\, this much-anticipated edition brings 50 artists to the fore. Gray has selected the very best emerging and established artists for a twenty-four-day event. \nThe FLUX opening party comes alive with musical guests\, performance art\, and site-specific installations\, which complement the work and bring a new experimental approach to the exhibition. \nThe exhibition represents an opportunity to gain access to a vast and diverse group of gifted artists on the path to being the big names of tomorrow\, showcasing international talent in a collaborative\, inclusive show. FLUX celebrates artists on the precipice of wider accolades and fame. \nAll guests who purchase will receive a Limited Edition artwork by artist Marcus Jake worth £250. \nDrag legends Anna Phylactic and Liquorice Black from Drag SOS will be hosts at the private view on 4th November. \nImages can be downloaded here: https://we.tl/t-BY4ndFT1h5 \nDetails: \nContact lisa@thefluxreview.com \n4th – 27th November \nDesign District\nBuilding C1\n1 Cripps Yard\nSoames Walk\nLondon\nSE10 0BQ \nOpening Times: \nPrivate View 4th November 18.00-21.00pm \n5th-27th November: \nMon/Sat/Sun 11.00-17.00pm\nTues-Fri. 11.00-19.00pm \nhttp://www.fluxexhibition.com \nTickets – Eventbrite \nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/flux-exhibition-design-district-tickets-168862884433 \nFeatured artists: \nAnna Pogudz \nAnna Pogudz is a Polish-born artist working in London and the South of France. She is a figurative painter focusing on contemporary beauty concepts popularised and polarised amongst women and influencers. Her inspirations are strongly connected with the fashion world\, a field she was very familiar with as she worked in the industry before studying art. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw with a BA in Fashion Design and at the Wimbledon College of Arts with an MA in Painting. More recently\, she completed the Turps Banana Painting off-site programme in London. Her works have been exhibited in exhibitions in the UK\, Poland\, Hungary\, Sweden and Germany. \nFlora Borsi \nFlora Borsi is a young fine art photographer from Hungary. She uses exquisite photo manipulation to create surreal images that are thematically focused on identity\, relationships\, emotions and dreams. Her flawless technique and subtle conceptual ideas create beautiful evocations of universal emotions\, from lust and desire to despair and loss. Borsi at once captures the complex strength and fragility of the human psyche. She expertly visualises dark fantasies and atmospheric dreams\, utilising the uncanny and clever metaphor\, while unlocking what it means to think\, feel\, dream and express in the urban world. Her work often features the female body. She plays with hiding and revealing the eyes or face to leave only the feminine form\, exploring questions of female representation and the relationship between body and self. Borsi has exhibited internationally with solo exhibitions in Europe and the USA and has most notably taken part in the Continental Shift group exhibition at Saatchi Gallery. She has also exhibited at the Louvre\, France. \nMarcus Jake \nMarcus Jake is a full-time abstract and mixed-media artist born in the UK. He is currently making his home in Victoria\, BC\, Canada. Jake was educated in Bristol\, UK\, where he studied and received his BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Art and Certificate in Higher Education in Photography. \nWhat initially appear to be two very separate and distinct bodies of work (abstract painting and mixed-media photography) are\, in fact profoundly connected and interlinked\, both inspiring people to connect with that part of themselves that makes them feel truly alive and magnetically present. It is an art that celebrates bravery and courage\, the path we walk to get to where we are\, portraying our beautiful individuality\, deep connected humanity and energetic bond to life. Immeasurably entwined into the narrative are our human connection\, our connection to all other life and our expansive connection to the planet we live on. \nJake has exhibited internationally\, including in London\, Brighton\, Bristol\, Glasgow\, Barcelona\, Rome\, Paris\, Vancouver\, BC\, Victoria\, BC\, and several awards. \nKate Viner \nSculptor Kate Viner has been commissioned to create several large public artworks. Anthony Caro’s heavy metal constructionism was the backdrop of Viner’s 80’s art school experience at Winchester. As a result\, she spent years honing her skills in welding and forging steel. \nHowever\, her formal art education started much earlier. Aged 15\, she began training under Patricia Austin to sculpt the figure directly from life in clay. Consequently\, she is comfortable in various materials and techniques and works both abstractly and figuratively. \nUnderlying themes that motivate Viner’s work are the delicate balances between conflict\, religion\, sexuality\, respect and sacrifice. Her practice explores human evolution. She is interested in shifting attitudes towards female sexuality and the paradox of femininity. Her nudes are intimate yet not voyeuristic or sexualised. Her work often returns to the themes of religion\, women\, war and their relationships. The material and technique she selects are dictated by the subject matter the artwork demands. \nWorking collaboratively with teams and Outreach projects within communities is an integral part of the process that she relishes\, as her interest in the human narrative has always been her driving force. \nTeresa Wells \nBritish artist Teresa Wells creates figurative bronze sculptures that celebrate the dynamism\, resilience and emotive capacity of the human body. Whether portraying figures in movement\, dancing nudes or contemplative portraits\, Wells has a knack for capturing a human likeness in her art. Some of Wells’ sculptures are life-size\, whilst others are made smaller or bigger\, reflecting either the intimacy or impact of each piece. Wells’ art is inspired by how humans behave\, with a particular focus on the endurance and strength of the human body. \nBronze is integral to Wells’ practice\, not only because of its smooth and refined surface texture but predominantly because of its extremely high tensile strength. The durability and flexibility of bronze allow Wells to experiment with composition and arrangement\, resulting in dynamic poses and energetic subjects. Wells uses the lost wax process to create her sculptures\, and she often places her sculptures high up on plinths to enhance the Sense of movement. \nSam Haynes \nSam Haynes is a mid-career visual artist based in London\, interested in physicality and materiality of forms\, creating abstract assemblages and installations\, strongly influenced by her inclusive engagement practice. \nAs an artist that initially felt isolated and uncomfortably distanced from everyday life working within a studio\, Haynes started her practice over twenty-five years ago\, creating site-specific public art installations\, engaging local communities with the belief that art has the power to bridge divides within society. Her creative process is still all about making connections\, both as an artist facilitator and a collaborator and sculptor. Accessibility lies at the heart of her work\, incorporating found objects and materials\, using low-tech methods of construction to create abstract assemblages that reference domestic and architectural space. \nThese recent mixed media works\, developed since lockdown 2020\, combine a rhythmical\, systematic design and geometric structure with softer\, flexible elements that shape more organically. Haynes is led primarily by an intuitive response to these contrasting or opposing materials\, leading to often unexpected outcomes. These playful interactions\, surprising and yet familiar\, seek to create a sense of balance and tension\, building dynamic connections between materials and the surrounding space\, animated through the use of colour\, light\, and shadow. This recent work is presented in photographic form\, printed directly onto aluminium\, giving the lightest areas a shine as you move across the image. \nHaynes has worked in arts facilitation for many years\, engaging marginalised communities and working with disability and mental health charities. Her public sculptural installations include commissions for Amnesty International\, Public Art Wales\, and the deaf-blind charity\, Sense. As well as leading Arts Council funded projects she has exhibited interactive sculpture at the Hannah Peschar Sculpture Garden and collaborative\, site-specific artwork at the Southbank’s Royal Festival Hall. \nIan Brennan \nHaving spent almost two decades in the corporate world\, Ian Brennan decided to follow his lifelong dream of becoming an artist. In 2019 Brennan chose to devote his attention to painting full time. Having worked with interior designers and architects\, his paintings have found homes from LA to several restaurants and homes in London. Brennan trained as a psychotherapist in his late twenties and brought the depth of the inward journey into his artwork. Brennan’s abstract landscapes are often his response to the elements and nature. His close observation combines with intriguing surface texture and carefully balanced composition to create a unique representation of his internal landscape. Brennan’s paintings have an open-ended narrative that allows the viewer to be suspended in a dreamlike reality. No defined answers are offered\, only the encouragement to enter a world within the piece and explore it with your sensibility. Brennan is becoming one of Europe’s most exciting emerging artists. His work is highly sought after. Brennan recently won an award at this year’s London Art Biennale. \nPedro Sousa Louro \nA textural tangibility is immediately evident in Pedro Sousa Louro’s work. Earthy and material-focused\, a natural beauty is found within the play between dark woods and a muddied palette. Furthermore\, geometry plays a crucial role here\, as clean white lines converse with muted colour blocks. There is an almost archival\, collage-like approach to applying materials and hues\, and it is as if Sousa Louro has assumed the role of archaeologist\, unearthing layers of forgotten history. Educated at Chelsea College of Arts\, Sousa Louro is one of the most talked-about LGBTQ artists at the moment.

SUMMARY:Turning Earth - Ceramics Market in Leyton
DESCRIPTION:The much-loved Winter Ceramics Market will return to Turning Earth’s Leyton studio on Saturday 4th and 5th December 2021. More than 70 ceramicists will sell their work directly from the studio\, and there will be wheel-throwing and hand-building demos throughout the weekend – with the option for visitors to have a go too. \nA charity stall selling donated work will again raise money for charity Help Refugees. There’ll also be delicious Vietnamese Street food from Hanoi Ca Phe\, mulled wine and mince pies\, as well as live klezmer from members of the much-loved festival band The Turbans\, and folk music from Davey Green. Alongside the market\, a host of neighbouring artists\, photographers\, furniture makers and designers on the Argall Avenue industrial estate will open their doors so you can explore their studios. \nOne of the gifts of the pandemic has been in showing people what they most value\, which became strikingly apparent when so much of life was restricted. People tried crafts in more significant numbers than ever before during the lockdowns\, but the move online deprived everyone of the tactile experience of buying work directly from the maker. In what promises to be an inspiring reunion of makers and ceramics lovers\, you can expect to see pieces made with kitchen implements when our makers couldn’t leave their homes\, among the many creative ideas refined in lockdown. Like so many independent artisans\, ceramicists have suffered badly because so many outlets for their work have been closed over the past two years – buying independent at Christmas shoppers can help keep the craft alive.

SUMMARY:呼吸 Hūxī Respiration Art Exhibition and Live Performances
DESCRIPTION:After several years of a world pandemic\, where has your breath has taken you? Is it a form of escapism\, a little breathing space to relax\, get out of your own head and pursue a mindful experience? How important is it to performative phrases that express tension? \nBreath is a discrepant engagement across passageways and afterlives\, for to respire is an opening for life and death and the exquisite possibility of escape. \nTo mark the start of a new lunar year\, Goldsmiths Confucius Institute will be hosting an intriguing new art exhibition exploring respiration in relation to the Chinese characters 呼吸 Hūxī. \nIntermittent live performances will be taking place throughout the duration of the exhibition and Covid-friendly refreshments will also be available to take home. \nThis exhibition will present a variety of mediums (including but not limited to experimental videography\, photography\, painting\, sculpture\, physical installation and textile) from a range of contemporary artists\, including external artists as well as Goldsmith’s Art\, Music\, Design and Theatre and Performance students\, and will investigate the importance of respiration in creative practice and the challenges of being resistant. \nInhale and exhale are seen as opposites and equals at the same time\, influx-and-efflux marks how’s movements oscillate between porous extremities and radiating interiorities. The dynamic impulses happening across linguistic patterns. \n呼吸 has resonances with the experience of being simultaneously inside and outside the scene of respiration\, both shifts recalibrate the self\, the other\, the properties and subjects involved with them. Like an otherwise arranged by syntactical reinvention\, or the influx-and-efflux of words across sentences\, waves\, and worlds\, 呼吸 is a sonic entanglement. It is a call and response beckoned by ideological impulse\, political determination\, and social sound that travels across disparate life forces. \n呼吸 Hūxī – Respiration \n11th February – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths\nAfternoon Session: 4pm – 5.30pm\nEvening Session: 6pm – 7.30pm \n12th February – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths\nEvening Session 6pm – 7.30pm \n13th February – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths\n6pm – 7.30pm – Great Hall\, Goldsmiths \nCovid Regulations\nParticipants are encouraged to take a lateral flow test prior to arrival\, required to wear a mask throughout the exhibition and maintain social distancing and relevant health and safety regulations. \nThis is event is free for Goldsmiths staff and students and £5 for non-staff/students. SUMMARY:Nature Interrupted with Celina Teague
DESCRIPTION:Monstrous hybrid beings appear against acid skies and barren landscapes\, creating surreal\, otherworldly scenes that sit uncomfortably between nightmare and dream. Nature Interrupted\, Celina Teague’s fifth solo show at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, takes a deep dive into the dark underbelly of our planet’s biosphere\, where human detritus overcome animals and plants. They appear futuristic\, unwholesome\, and alarming. Still\, at the same time\, Teague’s vibrant colour palette commands presence: we are challenged not only to look but to face up to the reality of what we see. \nIn part\, Teague’s artistic practice is an expression of her guilt and responsibility about not only environmental issues but also political and humanitarian crises. She listens to the news and various podcasts as she paints\, allowing the information to filter through onto the canvas so that each composition possesses a raw sense of urgency. ‘I paint instinctively. It always involves risk\, which I find both liberating and frightening. If I painted on a different day or even at a different hour\, the result would be completely different\,’ she says. \nThe work Still I Rise\, for example\, was made when Teague was listening to reports of the conflict in Afghanistan and specifically about the oppression of women. However\, instead of focusing on the bleakness of the situation\, Teague’s perspective is one of hope\, vitality and strength. In the painting\, women dressed in blue burqas appear like flowers blooming at the end of tall lush vines\, the winding\, interconnected stems suggesting a sense of quiet solidarity. Interestingly\, this is the only work in which humanity and nature appear in harmony: the women are supported by the natural world rather than overwhelming it. However\, this relationship becomes skewed in the painting Swallowed. Here\, the women appear huddled together to form the centre of what looks like a pink flower\, but closer inspection reveals that the petals are\, in fact\, severed tongues. In this way\, the work becomes a powerful visual metaphor for how censorship is used as a form of oppression and entrapment. \nAlthough the other works reflect more broadly on the climate crisis\, the notion of mutilation runs throughout the exhibition. In one of the more surreal compositions\, a giant straw pierces through the centre of a flamingo’s body\, which is itself\, assembled from pink\, fleshy human limbs and organs. A mass of breasts and udders replace its feathers while its foot is a claw-like human hand. The strange yellow glow of the sky suggests a sickness or toxicity\, and an egg lies fried on the cracked\, dry ground as if baked in the sun. Like all of Teague’s works\, the bright colour palette is somewhat misleading: we’re unsure whether to laugh or gasp. Is this a horror or a comedy? \nThis deliberate ambiguity creates a strong sense of unease that reflects both the subject matter and Teague’s approach to image-making. ‘My work is sometimes labelled as activist art\, which I find uncomfortable because painting about these issues doesn’t feel like enough\,’ she says. ‘We have all the facts easily accessible to us\, but we still just sit back and watch what’s happening most of the time.’ Teague returns to this notion of ‘armchair activism’ in each of her exhibitions by painting an image of an armchair\, often encompassing elements from the other works to create a sense of unity while also highlighting the irony of her role as an artist. However\, it would be amiss to ignore the power of the image. Teague’s paintings command our gaze and draw our attention to the politics of seeing. Confronted by these strange\, unsettling scenes\, we can deny neither awareness nor responsibility.

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary. SUMMARY:Turning Earth Highgate Ceramics Market
DESCRIPTION:Turning Earth opens its fourth London ceramics centre  – this time in Highgate – with a weekend maker market on 15/16 October.  Nose around the beautifully renovated 1930s industrial building complete with a contemplative garden\, and browse work from a hundred of London’s up-and-coming ceramicists.\n \nWith regular visitors\, including celebrity chefs Nigella Lawson and Yotam Ottolenghi\, the Turning Earth market is in the vanguard of a maker movement that\, despite many recent shocks to small industry\, continues to grow.\n \nShow solidarity with local makers as they express their creativity in the face of the energy crisis and rub off some of the peace that comes with working with the calming medium of clay. As usual\, there’ll be street food and live Klezmer music\, and – inspired by the Spring’s #CookForUkraine campaign – this time\, they’ll sell specially donated wares to raise money for displaced children supported by UNICEF as part of  #MakeForUkraine.\n

SUMMARY:Supermodels Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In the eerie setting of a building site awaiting refurbishment\, multidisciplinary design and architecture studio Piercy&Company presents a performance of animated models of their buildings and projects – reconnecting our digital and physical worlds through a childlike sense of wonder and delight as their amazing models spring into life. \nResonating with the mysterious allure of miniature objects with lives of their own – think doll’s houses\, cuckoo clocks and model railways – Supermodels employs mechanical automata\, projection mapping\, scent and lighting to create a new\, more engaging way of communicating architectural concepts. \nExploring exciting new possibilities for an age-old form of architectural communication\, Supermodels distils the studio’s 20 years of research into the sensory and haptic dimensions of architecture. Each model encapsulates the essence of Piercy&Company‘s design approach to building typologies spanning from commercial developments to churches. \nThe models were handmade by Piercy&Company’s architecture team to explore and test experiential aspects of architecture\, including the spatial\, the tectonic and the tactile. \n  \nDates \nFriday 25 November until Sunday 11 December \n  \nOpening Hours \n12pm-7pm Monday to Friday \n12pm-5pm Saturday and Sunday \nor by appointment supermodels@piercyandco.com \n  \n  \nAddress \nJahn Court\, Regent Quarter \n34 York Way (entrance of York Way) \nLondon \nN1 9AB
