SUMMARY:‘A Strange Intimacy’ - Resolution @ThePlace
DESCRIPTION:A man. A woman. And a relationship that’s got stuck. It needs a reboot or\, rather\, a boot up the arse. They’ve tried switching it off and on again\, but that didn’t work. So it’s time to get creative – to renegotiate\, fight their corner\, state their case.\nDrawing on Sarah Kent’s experience of improvised performance and devising (both for her own and other choreographer’s pieces)\, this work was created through improvisation and then set for performance.\nThe process could be playful and fun or mean and nasty – a roller coaster ride to hell and back that gets physical but is bound to achieve results. Will the outcome be the one they want\, though? Enjoy the ride; it will be gloriously bumpy!\nPart of a Resolution evening with\n– Mad Jacks Theatre’s ‘ACNE ROMEO’\, a thrilling and messy dance-theatre translation of Sam Smith’s frightening new play. Boy and girl meet in a violent world. It’s a collision course. A riot. This has to be a love story.\n– Yoncali McCredie’s ‘Another Day of Loving’\nRaw and tender dance theatre by award-winning filmmakers Maya Yoncali and Andy McCredie. Another Day Of Loving is a romantic and honest approach to grief in a relationship\, exposing what it means to be in love in the aftermath of death. Churning between techno and 1960s Hollywood film scores\, the piece ricochets through the character’s bodies and inner turmoil to present a heartfelt narrative of love and loss.

SUMMARY:Felicity – A New Dance Show
DESCRIPTION:Felicity depicts the highs and lows of the modelling world by delving into ideas of power and complicity within the fashion industry. A one-woman performance that combines ropes\, duct tape\, and flamboyant wigs with contemporary dance creates a raw and confronting piece\, as well as a love letter to the modelling profession.  \n  \nFelicity is a brand-new dance piece created by Serena Thomas. A 25-minute show within a triple-bill event. It is a part of Resolution Festival 2025\, commissioned by The Place.  \n  \nHire Dancers in London

SUMMARY:"Adam"\, Resolution Festival 2025
DESCRIPTION:Adam is a self-choreographed solo by Harry Theadora Foster\, being performed as part of a triple bill at Resolution Festival.  \nA body learns he’s alive. A child learns his favourite dance. An adult learns who he might have been.  \nA story of discovery culminates in a conversation between these beings across one body.   \nWhat would they tell each other if given the chance? \nIn a spellbinding journey of memory\, trickery and identity\, Harry Theadora Foster connects characters to their own past\, present and future selves. Adam is a testament to the fact that the act of ‘remembering’ is itself an act of imagination- and a tool to help us reimagine who we are now.  \nHarry Theadora Foster (he/him) is a dance artist based in London. Drawing from autobiographical experiences and his practice as a poet\, storytelling is central to his work\, focused on capturing and exploring human experiences.  \nHe has been a dancer with Akram Khan Company since 2022. A graduate of Rambert School\, he has also worked with companies such as Casson and Friends\, Richard Chappell Dance\, James Cousins Company\, and Richard Alston. His work has been staged in the UK at Lilian Bayliss Theatre Sadlers Wells\, Linbury Theatre Royal Opera House\, Anya Linden Studio Theatre\, The Playground Theatre\, and The Point\, Eastleigh.

SUMMARY:Nine Sixteenths
DESCRIPTION:London world premiere for Nine Sixteenths\, focusing on black female role models via Janet Jackson \n  \nNine-Sixteenths is a fast\, fun multimedia look at the media rise\, fall and rise again of Janet Jackson. \n  \nAt the 2004 Superbowl\, Justin Timberlake exposed Janet Jackson’s breast and nipple to a huge live TV audience for nine-sixteenths of a second. This brief moment derailed Jackson’s career for many years while Timberlake’s thrived. \n  \nNine-Sixteenths unpacks the rise\, fall and rise again of Jackson and what this has to say about how the media treat black women. Created by artist and theatre-maker Paula Varjack\, the show explores coming of age in the 1990s and how hugely influential Jackson was\, especially for young black women. It’s fast\, fun and hugely entertaining – the venue and audience are transported to a world of stadium concerts and TV studios. It will amply demonstrate how Jackson helped shape our contemporary cultural landscape\, paving the way for artists like Britney Spears\, Beyoncé\, and Rhianna. \n  \nThe World Premiere is at London’s Pleasance Theatre\, Carpenters Mews\, North Road\, London N7 9EF from 6-16 November. There will be further London dates and a UK tour in 2025. \n  \nPaula said\, ‘Janet Jackson was a tremendous icon to me at a time when I had relatively few black female artists to look to. She was a game changer in so many ways – and did it on her terms. After her ‘wardrobe malfunction\,’ the music industry let her down in ways so effective that many thought her career faded away. Yet she kept working\, making music and films\, and finally\, the injustice of what happened is being recognised. In the end\, it’s the art that matters. As an iconic role model for many black women and an outspoken ally for the LGBTQI+ community\, she made great art. The show also looks at why role models matter\, the lack of older female role models of colour\, and the role that (largely) white male media executives play in deciding who thrives in mainstream pop culture. \n  \n‘Who was invested in the backlash and became obsessed with blocking her success? Who joked over her humiliation? How have all those involved profited since?’ \n  \nNine Sixteenths features a cast of four black 40+ women. Joining  Varjack are Pauline Mayers (also Movement Director); acclaimed Copenhagen-based choreographer Julienne Doko; RSC\, National Theatre and BBC actor\, writer and filmmaker Endy McKay; and poet/theatremaker Livia Kojo Alour. The sound design was created by Alicia Jane Turner\, who was commissioned by the London Philharmonia Orchestra\, the London Sinfonietta\, Spitalfields Music\, and National Sawdust (New York). \n  \nJanet Jackson announced that the UK arena shows would be held in October 2024. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Superbowl incident. Like 2004\, 2024 will see a US Presidential election set against Middle Eastern strife. \n  \n‘Endurance is my heritage\, as a woman\, especially a black woman. I’m convinced that we black women possess a special\, indestructible strength that allows us to not only get down but to get up\, to get through and to get over \nJanet Jackson receiving the Soul Train Award for Outstanding Career Achievement\, March 2004 \n  \nPaula Varjack is an artist working in video\, performance & participation. She is drawn to big social questions\, using pop culture as a way of framing and making them more accessible (and fun!). Her work has become increasingly collaborative. The theatrical film TheBabyQuestion was devised by Luca Rutherford and Cat James and directed by Chuck Blue Lowry. As Varjack-Lowry (with Chuck Blue Lowry) she created iMelania using Melania Trump as an avatar of an acceptably foreign woman. Show Me The Money stimulated dialogue and debate about finance in the arts\, The Cult of K*NZO looked at our fascination with luxury brands. She is a frequent contributor to the work of other artists\, including This Egg\, Krishna Istha\, Proteus Theatre and TomYumSim. Born in Washington DC to a Ghanaian mother and a British father\, out of many places she has lived\, she now considers east London ‘home’. \n  \nDue to the themes of the show\, the company is especially keen to encourage people of colour to attend and is\, therefore\, offering a discount to those who identify as black\, global majority\, and/or POC. \n  \nNineteenths (of a second) was inspired by Janet Jackson and created by Paula Varjack. It’s a 75-minute fast\, fun\, multimedia examination of iconic black female role models featuring Janet Jackson’s rise\, fall\, and rise again. \n  \n6\, 7\, 8\, 13\, 14\, 15 November 7.30 pm. \nSaturdays 9 and 16 November 3 pm & 7.30 pm. \n£20\, concessions £17\, POC £10 \nThe November 14 performance will be BSL\, signed by Jacqui Beckford. \n  \nFollowing the Thurs 14 November performance\, there is a unique late night cabaret and DJ in association with the acclaimed award-winning The Cocoa Butter Club; combined ticket of £25 \nLondon Pleasance Theatre\, Carpenters Mews\, North Road\, London N7 9EF \n020 7609 1800 https://www.pleasance.co.uk/event/nine-sixteenths

SUMMARY:Concerto - The Place
DESCRIPTION:Ever since their smash hit Idiot-Syncracy\, the ”hot queer performance mavericks” (The Arts Intel report) Igor x Moreno have established themselves as some of the most entrepreneurial\, influential and innovative artists working in Europe today. \nNow\, following their critically acclaimed BEAT and Karrasekare\, the duo return to The Place with the UK premiere of an earlier work. CONCERTO is both song-writing and choreography. It is Igor x Moreno’s first ‘danza canzone’ — a form inspired by ‘teatro canzone’ made popular by Giorgio Gaber. \nWith a playlist of songs written by Moreno Solinas\, arranged by Simone Sassu and performed live by Moreno Solinas and Igor Urzelai Hernando\, the work is intimate and visually rich\, featuring a live DJ and elaborate costumes by Liborio Capizzi.

SUMMARY:Gabriel’s Wharf Arts Festival
DESCRIPTION:This September\, explore one of London’s best-kept secrets at Gabriel’s\nWharf Arts Festival. Taking place on Saturday 14th September and Saturday 28th September (from\n12pm to 6pm) this FREE event celebrating arts and culture\, invites guests to discover the charm of\nGabriel’s Wharf. \nLocated on the scenic Thames Walkway between the National Theatre and Oxo Tower Wharf\, Gabriel’s\nWharf is a hidden corner of London brimming with creativity. \nIts fascinating history is tied to a community that\, out of frustration with private development\, led a\nremarkable campaign which resulted in the purchase of a 13-acre site that everyone could enjoy.\nOriginally established in the 1980s as a cultural space to support small art\, design and craft\nbusinesses\, Gabriel’s Wharf remains home to a variety of artisan shops and galleries alongside a\nselection of independent eateries. \nThis festival is a must-visit for art lovers\, families\, and anyone looking to discover a London secret\nthat’s been hiding in plain sight. \nFestival Dates and Highlights:\nSaturday 14th September will be centred around art. Three immersive workshops will run throughout\nthe day\, where participants can create bunting and placards that will be displayed in Gabriel’s Wharf\nthroughout September. These workshops will be guided by a local artist as well as spoken word poet\,\nTia Camilleri\, who will help generate powerful messages that add an additional layer of meaning to the\nartwork. \nSaturday 28th September will be focused on live music. In addition to a diverse line-up of\nprofessional musical acts\, including singers\, musicians and bands\, there will also be performances\nfrom a roaming Shakespearean troupe. \nAcross both days\, roaming actors\, musicians (and acrobats from Badoosh circus theatre company)\nwill be bringing Gabriel’s Wharf to life with impromptu performances – delighting guests with surprise\nencounters. DJ duo\, Double Agent 7\, (renowned for playing floor-fillers exclusively on vinyl 45s) will\nensure a vibrant atmosphere while performances from comedians will bring additional smiles and\nlaughter. \nWhilst enjoying the festival\, guests can also browse the independent shops and meet the creative\nmakers who have made Gabriel’s Wharf their home (including Liz and Frances from Potters’ Yard Arts\,\nLisette from Gabu Chocolate\, and a wealth of other artists from Southbank Printmakers and Skylark\nGalleries. \nGabriel’s Wharf Arts Festival is designed to grab attention and bring this often overlooked but beloved\npart of London into the spotlight. With two jam-packed days of creativity\, performance\, and\ncommunity\, it’s the perfect cure for post-Summer Holiday blues that will also give London locals and\nvisitors alike\, a chance to explore a destination they may not even know exists.
