DESCRIPTION:Illustration Workshop in London by Royal Society of Sculptors\nWhether you are new to illustration or have been experimenting with visual language for a while\, this workshop will help you to create imaginative\, unique images that tell a story. In this 90 minute session\, you will invent characters and create drama to produce a set of finished illustrations to take away with you. Throughout the lesson\, you will have the opportunity to view work by historical and contemporary illustrators in a variety of styles. You will also have the chance to experiment with different combinations of materials to produce original artwork. \nYou will learn to use a range of materials\, including pens\, pencils\, collage and ink\, and learn techniques for creating both stand-alone images and a sequence of frames used in comic books and graphic novels. \nWorkshop attendees will be challenged to use their imagination\, take risks and work both independently and collaboratively. SUMMARY:Craft Okinawa Lions & Sip Awamori Cocktails at Pantechnicon – Ceramics Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Ceramics Workshop\nCreate your own Shisa Guardian Lion statuette while sipping on a unique cocktail in this workshop led by ceramicist Akiko Matsuda.\nShisa are found all over the islands of Okinawa\, Japan’s southernmost prefecture and a beautiful subtropical archipelago. The figures are an iconic part of the islands’ unique history and heritage and can be found on rooftops and roadsides\, in restaurants and workplaces. Believed to ward off bad luck and evil spirits\, in the workshop\, Akiko will guide you through crafting a male (open mouth) or female (closed mouth) Shisa\, telling you more about the symbolism of these island talismans as you make them. To give you a taste of Okinawa\, the host will serve each guest a cocktail made with awamori\, a unique rice-based spirit indigenous to the islands\, as well as some Okinawan snacks sent all the way from the islands by Okinawa Tourism (Okinawa Convention & Visitors Bureau) which closely worked with Pantechnicon to develop this special experience. \nParticipants can take home their work unfired on the day\, or for an extra fee of £15\, Pantechnicon will arrange for the works to be glazed (transparent glaze) and fired. The firing process will take about one month. \nBook at Pantechnicon.com. \nAbout the artist\nAkiko Matsuda is a ceramic artist born in Kanagawa\, Japan. Since she was a child\, painting\, calligraphy\, music\, and pottery have been an important part of her life. After attending a Shisa making workshop in Okinawa\, Akiko was inspired to pursue a career in ceramics. She majored in ceramics at Tama Art University in Tokyo\, and her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions across London and Tokyo. \nTickets cost £40 per person\, including all materials to make your own shisha and an awamori cocktail. This workshop will be held twice\, once at 14:00 and again at 18:00.

Beginners are welcome!\nThese workshops are part of our fundraising towards opening an Art Facility in Bethlehem for the Palestinian children and the youth in Aida Camp. 100% of profits from these workshops will directly go towards the Art Facility.\nHead over to our Crowdfunding page\, ‘Art for Palestine’\, to hear more! \nWORKSHOP DETAILS\nTo begin\, you will learn about different screen-printing techniques and then put into practice the craft using stencils to design a print and create it into your very own poster or tote bag! \nWe have two types of workshops running: \nWorkshop for KIDS age 5-14yeard old  (must be accompanied by an adult)\nSunday 25th July\, 1 pm\nThursday 29th July\, 1 pm. \nWorkshop for GROWN-UPS\nThursday 29th July\, 6:30 pm\nThe workshop session is for 2 hours. \nScreen printing can be messy so try not to wear your best clothes to this workshop!\nThere will be delicious food & drinks sold by What The Fattoush? DESCRIPTION:‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ is a participatory art installation that challenges the function of the retail space as a site of fast fashion consumption by transforming it into an immersive workshop and creative hub for making\, reusing and sharing. \nArtist in residence Lito Apostolakou uses waste materials to create textile sculptures based on personal stories\, memories and perceptions of identity. Drawing inspiration from visual\, textual\, and audio resources\, she invites members of the public to join her in using recyclable materials and waste fabric to create imaginary garments. \n‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ responds to the current precarious climate by transforming waste into visual expressions of identity and reimagining the high street as a centre of creativity. Princes Arcade links the cultural hub of the neighbouring Royal Academy with the bespoke menswear retailers of Jermyn Street\, with the project representing a conceptual and physical bridge between both. \nYou are invited to witness the collection of absurd garments develop and grow\, learn about the stories that inspired the pieces or tune into personal memories.

Needless to say we don’t expect there will be too many office parties or opportunities for get-togethers. We also strongly believe that\, as we draw this year to a close\, we all need a good excuse to enjoy ourselves\, reflect and reset. \nWe have over 10 individual events planned in collaboration with some exciting international collaborators across the fashion and craft space… To name a few\, we will be slowing down with a meditative stitching workshop\, seeing how to upcycle items we already own into festive Christmas jumpers\, and figuring out what to do with our seasonal fashions once the party’s over! Bringing it all together with a Christmas Jumper Day/Ugly Sweater (to our US friends) Party Zoom style. We are also fundraising for Save the Children with each event having an optional donation element included. The events are individually ticketed with a price to reflect. DESCRIPTION:Autograph’s Senior Curator Renée Mussai discusses the creation of Lina Iris Viktor’s exhibition\, the research that informs the works on display\, and Viktor’s performative engagement of the self. \nUsing the exhibition as a point of departure\, Mussai will also reflect on the process of working closely with artists – especially black women and gender non conforming practitioners – to develop immersive curatorial projects and site-specific gallery installations. For instance\, Viktor’s work will be considered in relation to contemporary artists such as Zanele Muholi\, Aida Silvestri\, Jeannette Ehlers\, and Phoebe Boswell\, all of whom have exhibited at Autograph in recent years. \nMussai will be joined by independent curator Karen Alexander\, responding to the exhibition and discussing shared curatorial practices. \nThis illustrated talk will be followed by Q&A with the audience. \n— \nABOUT RENÉE MUSSAI \nRenée Mussai is Senior Curator and Head of Curatorial at Autograph. A scholar-curator with a special interest in African\, Black European and diasporic lens-based practices\, Mussai publishes and lectures internationally on photography\, curatorial activism and cultural politics. Since 2009\, she has been a regular guest curator and former non-resident fellow at the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research at Harvard University. \nShe is presently a Research Associate in the Visual Identities in Art and Design Research Centre\, University of Johannesburg\, and PhD candidate in Art History at University College London. Over the past decade\, she has organised numerous exhibitions in Europe\, Africa and the United States. Her writing has appeared in artist monographs\, anthologies and journals such as Aperture\, and Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art. \nABOUT KAREN ALEXANDER \nKaren Alexander is a London-based independent film and moving image curator and an associate lecturer at Central St Martins\, University of the Arts\, London. For over 15 years she worked with and for BFI and the Royal College of Art. Her areas of research are artists’ film and video\, and the post-colonial visual politics of the African diaspora with particular reference to gender\, race and representation. \nRecent curatorial projects include: A Passion for Remembering: The Films of Maureen Blackwood\, Cinema Rediscovered\, Bristol (2019)\, Dream Time: We All Have Stories\, Nuit Blanche\, Toronto (2018)\, Whip It Good: Spinning From History’s Filthy Mind\, Jeannette Elhers\, Autograph\, London (2015). DESCRIPTION:Villa Lena\, the unique agriturismo hotel in wild Tuscany\, is set bring a taste of Italy to London this November with a pop-up shop at 180 The Strand from 28th – 29th November. The 2-day pop-up will feature a product shop perfect for unique Christmas gifts\, complimentary aperitivos for visitors and a talk by previous Villa Lena artist in residence\, Dazed writer and author\, Amelia Abraham. \nTaking place in the café at 180 The Strand from 4 – 6pm\, Villa Lena will invite the public to come and taste test delights including their olive oil\, red wine and sparkling rosé. Visitors will also be invited to take part in a traditional Italian aperitivo\, alongside canapés created by Villa Lena’s head chef including grilled polenta with courgette\, tomato bruschetta and crudo ham and pecorino Toscano. In addition\, on Friday 29th November at 3pm\, previous Villa Lena artist in residence and Dazed Magazine’s Features Editor\, Amelia Abraham\, will give a talk on the importance of art residencies in fostering creativity. \nVilla Lena will launch its new range of products at the event\, currently available to buy exclusively from the pop-up. The new products have been created and inspired by Villa Lena’s expansive 500-hectare estate\, including olive oil\, two variations of red wine\, candles\, limited edition prints\, olive picks and napkins. In addition to the home-grown products\, Villa Lena is also launching an authentically Tuscan sparkling rosé in collaboration with Mazzei wines\, a family run business that has been making wine in Tuscany for over 600 years. \nIn addition\, there will be a selection of artisanal products on sale\, created by past artists in residence and local Tuscan craftsmen. Villa Lena candles are created by Graziani\, Tuscan wax chandlers since 1805; olive picks designed by Danish-Australian artist Emma Montague during her artist residency at Villa Lena in 2016; printed napkins by Berlin-based past resident Nadine Goepfert and a selection of limited-edition prints donated and created by past Villa Lena resident artists. \nSituated amongst the rolling hills of rural Tuscany\, Villa Lena is simultaneously a creative residence\, agriturismo and holiday destination. DESCRIPTION:Rubik’s Brand Ltd\, the London-based company that owns the rights to the Rubik’s Cube – the world’s most popular toy – is hosting its first ever Pop-Up Experience at 9-11 Short’s Gardens\, Seven Dials\, Covent Garden\, London WC2H 9AT\, on Tuesday October 1st and Wednesday October 2nd 2019. \nThe brand is creating a truly immersive experience for Rubik’s Cube enthusiasts in advance of the 40th anniversary of the cube becoming toy of the year and taking the world by storm. \nSince the Rubik’s Cube’s launch in 1980\, an estimated 450 million Rubik’s cubes have been sold globally. It has become one of the most instantly recognised symbols of fun\, aptitude and creative endeavour due to its iconic\, colourful multidimensional design that continues to appeal to people of all ages and cultures. \n\n\n \nThe new interactive pop-up experience will feature many exciting activities\, demonstrating the creative impact of the intriguing cube. A mosaic of HRH Queen Elizabeth II will be created using 1\,800 limited edition Rubik’s cubes. \nDesigned by Norwegian cube artist\, @Cubearting\, the artwork will be assembled with the help of visitors\, set to break the current Guinness World Record for the most individuals contributing to a single Rubik’s Cube mosaic. The current record has 293 participants which the Rubik’s Brand plans to smash. \nThe UK speedcubing champion\, George Scholey\, along with other cubers\, will be in attendance to teach novices how to crack the cube’s code. \nThe magician\, Taran Harvey-Chadwick\, who is a regular performer at the Magic Palace\, will be present to perform spellbinding close-up Rubik’s Cube tricks. There will even be face-painters from Glamour Van to add a touch of cubic-style tribal colour. \nAs the design of black cabs is an iconic element of London’s landscape\, two taxis wrapped with Rubik’s Cube designs will be used as mobile venues for the first ever ‘Carpool Cubeioke’. Guests will learn the skills of solving a Rubik’s Cube in a liveried cab while being chauffeured past the architectural landmarks of London.
