SUMMARY:Turning Earth Haringey Christmas Ceramics Market
DESCRIPTION:Christmas Ceramics Market\nOn 18/19 December we will hold the inaugural Christmas Ceramics Market at the new Turning Earth ceramics centre in Haringey. The new studio will bring the Turning Earth model established in Hoxton and Leyton to North London for the very first time\, offering a gym-like monthly membership arrangement for people who want to take up ceramics as a serious hobby\, as well as introductory classes for beginners.\nDuring the celebratory Christmas market weekend\, 70 ceramicists from Turning Earth’s studios will sell their work\, and there will be wheel-throwing and hand-building demos throughout – with the option for visitors to have a go too.\nMakers will share their reflections on how the disruption of the pandemic has impacted their work and celebrate some of the positive things it has brought with it. The new Turning Earth centre was itself created in a rising tide of craft participation and in response to the increasing desire for people to live and stay local and invest in the communities on their doorsteps.\nA stall selling donated work will raise money for local charities. There’ll also be delicious Vietnamese Street food from Hanoi Ca Phe\, mulled wine and mince pies\, klezmer from The Turbans and carols from Davey Green.\nCome and buy last-minute Christmas presents\, and prepare to be inspired – who knows\, you may want to come back and get your hands in clay yourself.

SUMMARY:Turning Earth - Ceramics Market in Leyton
DESCRIPTION:The much-loved Winter Ceramics Market will return to Turning Earth’s Leyton studio on Saturday 4th and 5th December 2021. More than 70 ceramicists will sell their work directly from the studio\, and there will be wheel-throwing and hand-building demos throughout the weekend – with the option for visitors to have a go too. \nA charity stall selling donated work will again raise money for charity Help Refugees. There’ll also be delicious Vietnamese Street food from Hanoi Ca Phe\, mulled wine and mince pies\, as well as live klezmer from members of the much-loved festival band The Turbans\, and folk music from Davey Green. Alongside the market\, a host of neighbouring artists\, photographers\, furniture makers and designers on the Argall Avenue industrial estate will open their doors so you can explore their studios. \nOne of the gifts of the pandemic has been in showing people what they most value\, which became strikingly apparent when so much of life was restricted. People tried crafts in more significant numbers than ever before during the lockdowns\, but the move online deprived everyone of the tactile experience of buying work directly from the maker. In what promises to be an inspiring reunion of makers and ceramics lovers\, you can expect to see pieces made with kitchen implements when our makers couldn’t leave their homes\, among the many creative ideas refined in lockdown. Like so many independent artisans\, ceramicists have suffered badly because so many outlets for their work have been closed over the past two years – buying independent at Christmas shoppers can help keep the craft alive.

SUMMARY:We Gather – Craft Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:We Gather – Craft Exhibition featuring five female makers of Black and Asian Heritage\nNew Crafts Council exhibition We Gather features five female makers of Black and Asian heritage whose work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value\, 17 November 2021 – 5 February 2022 \nWe Gather exhibition opens at the Crafts Council Gallery on 17 November and features five female Black and Asian heritage artists. Whilst their chosen materials and disciplines vary\, their work shares a commitment to craft and its cultural value. The makers are Shaheen Ahmed\, Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings\, Francisca Onumah and Onome Otite. \nThe title We Gather refers to the gathering of ideas\, skills and emotions embedded within these five craft practices and the meeting of perspectives that have been underrepresented in the industry. It is also a symbol of gratitude towards the communities who gathered their courage\, bodies\, and voices to support justice for Black lives\, which instigated deeper conversations between the UK’s Black makers and the Crafts Council. \n“This exhibition has offered us a unique opportunity to curate in honour of women who share similar experiences and frames of reference to our own\, but also within a mainstream cultural organisation that we haven’t traditionally seen ourselves reflected in. We are excited to bring together their collection of works\, which offer audiences fresh visibility to crafts that has emotional depth\, space and social resonance.” Curators of We Gather\, Rosie Ross & Griffi. \nThe We Gather exhibition came out of Craft Expertise\, the AHRC-funded UKRI/RCUK Innovation Fellowship led by Dr Karen Patel of Birmingham City University\, collaborating with Crafts Council. The research aimed to raise awareness of inequalities in the current craft economy in the UK and highlight the various challenges women of colour face in the sector. \nCommissioned by Dr Karen Patel as part of her research\, each artist in the exhibition will present new and existing work. \nBirmingham-based artist Shaheen Ahmed uses maps to reflect narratives of statelessness and disparagement. Her work is layered with a multitude of craft processes and motifs\, including calligraphy and Islamic geometry. She wore a blindfold while making them connect with the emotions and experiences of oppressed societies. \nEast Sussex-based artist Lorna Hamilton-Brown\, known for her provocative textile works that challenge preconceptions of knitting and crochet\, has created a knitted magazine cover – ‘We Mek Magazine’- full of symbolism with a central figure inspired by political activist Angela Davis and with her watch set to 9.25\, the time that George Floyd lost his life to police brutality. \nBritish-Sudanese textile artist Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings will present a new light installation. The work incorporates dyeing\, screen-printing\, and Devoré techniques to explore themes of identity\, communication\, heritage\, and womanhood. The artist is influenced by her Sudanese heritage\, which is reflected in her use of Arabic geometry\, colour\, and form. \nGhanaian-born silversmith Francisca Onumah has created three emotive and figurative vessels in her new work ‘In our sKin’ (2021) that reflect family\, relationships and historical images of Ghanaian people in everyday life. Their abstracted patterns are deconstructed from traditional Ghanaian motifs\, fabrics\, and crafted objects. Instead\, marks and textures are repeatedly hammered into sheet metal to mirror and resemble the patterns found in textiles and fabrics. \nLondon-based artist Onome Otite has created a new textile work inspired by the support network between women\, the group of figures in her piece are based on close friends of hers that have inspired her. She has also intentionally chosen five figures to mirror the relevance of the five women taking part in the We Gather exhibition. She has hand-stitched loose-folded fabrics across her hand-drawn statistics\, which each of her subjects has donated. \nAt the centre of the exhibition is a gathering space. Material from the commissioning artists will be displayed alongside other pioneering female makers whose work celebrates craft within everyday contexts. Among these will be works by artists Jasleen Kaur and Magdalene Odundo DBE from the Crafts Council Collection. SUMMARY:'Siluetas'\, Joachim Lambrechts - Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:12 November – 18 December 2021\nKristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, 2 Melior Place\, Bermondsey \nPrivate View: Thursday 11 November\, from 6:30 – 9 pm \nA skull smoking a cigarette\, an oversized duck laying an egg\, and a smiling butterfly. These are the eccentric visions of Belgian artist Joachim Lambrechts who plays with composition and form to evoke a sense of childlike joy and spontaneity. While the artist typically employs a vibrant colour palette\, his latest solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, London\, entitled Siluetas\, presents a bold new series of textural\, monochromatic works\, marking newfound confidence and aesthetic purity. \n \n  \n  \nLambrechts’ practice embraces and celebrates free creative expression. He never plans his compositions\, instead preferring to allow the image to reveal itself through the act of mark-making. Although this new series of black and white paintings express a certain restraint\, the images retain a powerful sense of dynamism which reflects the artist’s spontaneous process. With these works\, he began by pasting pieces of coloured paper onto the canvas to create a sense of texture and depth before applying layers of black paint. Broad brush strokes and lines of white colour were then used to delineate the outlines of objects and animals so that from a distance\, they appear as silhouettes or shadows. At the same time\, closer inspection reveals flashes of colour breaking through the surface where the artist has scratched or scraped away the paint. This creates a palpable tension between mark-making and erasure\, movement and stillness\, artistic abandon and creative control.\nFor this latest body of work\, Lambrechts took inspiration from early cave paintings\, which convey complex narratives and emotions despite their simplistic style. Similarly\, the artist has deliberately restricted his lines to what is only necessary to obtain a particular shape or form. The painting Pantera Negra\, for example\, depicts a black cat (or panther) whose body mainly consists of a large black shape with four vertical lines indicating the outlines of its front legs. As with all artworks\, Lambrechts’ signature graphical style simultaneously clarifies and distorts our understanding of the image. The cat’s shape appears both childlike and surreal\, just as in the painting Pegasus\, we can immediately identify the mythical horse while viewing the creature from a seemingly impossible perspective. All four of its legs appear along the same line\, bent and twisted into unnatural angles. “For me\, painting is not so much wanting to convey a message\, but rather a search for shapes\, lines and colour and seeing what possibilities they offer me\,” explains Lambrechts. At the same time\, this approach invites the viewer to engage more creatively as we are given greater freedom to interpret the compositions. \nWith some of the works\, the artist guides or destabilises our interpretation by incorporating text into the image. The words sometimes act as direct visual labels\, such as Black Eagle or Lions\, while others appear as witty modern-day aphorisms. The painting When the owl wakes up at night to kill\, we sleep\, for example\, depicts an owl seemingly in a kind of trance state\, its eyes filled with white circles and its wings extended while the text forms a literal frame or border around the edge of the canvas. In this way\, Lambrechts questions his role as an image-maker by demonstrating how our understanding of artwork is shaped by the composition itself and its framing and external contexts such as titles\, accompanying text\, and the surroundings in which the work appears. At the same time\, however\, he draws us closer to the image by inviting us to engage more actively and intimately with the artistic process.\nThese complex embedded layers of tension and bold visual contrasts are what make the artworks so compelling. By the very nature of paint\, they are static scenes while simultaneously bursting with raw\, exuberant creativity. \n  \n \n  \nAbout Joachim Lambrechts\nJoachim Lambrechts (born in 1986) is a renowned urban artist from Antwerp\, Belgium. In 2001 he began his studies at an art school in Antwerp. Later he got very involved with the graffiti and street art scene in his home city\, and in 2004 he distanced himself from his academic education and left art school without graduating. In the years that followed\, Joachim spent a lot of time experimenting with various approaches to graffiti and became quickly integrated into the Belgian street art scene. Since 2010\, painting on canvas has been Joachim’s primary focus and creating street art across Europe. \nIn contrast to his murals\, Joachim never makes preliminary studies or sketches when he starts working on a canvas. Yet\, paradoxically\, he feels more accessible within the four walls of his studio\, which is reflected in his paintings. They result from a more spontaneous process\, and as such\, possess a sense of urgency and innocence.

SUMMARY:Lito Apostolakou - Clothes You'll Never Wear
DESCRIPTION:‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ is a participatory art installation that challenges the function of the retail space as a site of fast fashion consumption by transforming it into an immersive workshop and creative hub for making\, reusing and sharing. \nArtist in residence Lito Apostolakou uses waste materials to create textile sculptures based on personal stories\, memories and perceptions of identity. Drawing inspiration from visual\, textual\, and audio resources\, she invites members of the public to join her in using recyclable materials and waste fabric to create imaginary garments. \n‘Clothes You’ll Never Wear’ responds to the current precarious climate by transforming waste into visual expressions of identity and reimagining the high street as a centre of creativity. Princes Arcade links the cultural hub of the neighbouring Royal Academy with the bespoke menswear retailers of Jermyn Street\, with the project representing a conceptual and physical bridge between both. \nYou are invited to witness the collection of absurd garments develop and grow\, learn about the stories that inspired the pieces or tune into personal memories.

SUMMARY:Eco Festive Fashion Week
DESCRIPTION:We are Eco Fashion Events – A collective hosting pop-ups and online events that celebrate the best of sustainable fashion\, style & crafts. \nWe’d love you to join us for our first ever series of Eco Festive Fashion Week events – happening 5th to 11th December 2020. \nWith the news that every 2-in-5 Christmas jumpers bought in the UK are discarded after being worn once\, the seeds for our eco festive fashion week were planted. \nThis year\, we expect Christmas to be quite different to usual. Needless to say we don’t expect there will be too many office parties or opportunities for get-togethers. We also strongly believe that\, as we draw this year to a close\, we all need a good excuse to enjoy ourselves\, reflect and reset. \nWe have over 10 individual events planned in collaboration with some exciting international collaborators across the fashion and craft space… To name a few\, we will be slowing down with a meditative stitching workshop\, seeing how to upcycle items we already own into festive Christmas jumpers\, and figuring out what to do with our seasonal fashions once the party’s over! Bringing it all together with a Christmas Jumper Day/Ugly Sweater (to our US friends) Party Zoom style. We are also fundraising for Save the Children with each event having an optional donation element included. The events are individually ticketed with a price to reflect. Please check out our Eventbrite listings and book a ticket or two\, or all! \nWe really hope that\, along with highlighting the best of eco & ethical style at Christmas\, our week of events will leave you feeling inspired and empowered.\nCan’t wait to see you there!

SUMMARY:Athanor – The Alchemical Furnace

Adam Olha\, Jan Daňhel\, Czech Republic / Slovakia 2020\, 117´\nCast: Jan Švankmajer\, Jaromír Kallista \nThe world is divided into two unequal camps. Those who have never heard of Jan Svankmajer and know that they have come face to face with genius.\nAntony Lane\, New Yorker \nThe legendary artist\, filmmaker and surrealist\, Jan Švankmajer\, whose work has inspired artists such as Terry Gilliam and the Quay Brothers\, bid farewell to feature filmmaking in 2018 with his swan song\, Insects. While shooting the making of Insects\, directors Adam Olha\, Jan Daňhel and producer Jaromír Kallista decided to preserve Švankmajer’s unique creative process revealing the behind-the-scenes details of his artistic practice. Over three years they followed his life and work at home and abroad (including the UK premiere of Insects at the Tate Modern) creating a complex portrait\, a collage\, in which serious discussions about his artistic principles are interlaced with footage of him at work and at home including everyday and comic moments such as crashing his four-wheeler\, posing awkwardly with fans or getting irritated by organisers at an art exhibition. Talking with disarming honesty\, Jan Švankmajer\, an extremely private man\, opens up and speaks of his dreams\, meditations\, and his wife and muse Eva Švankmajerová\, revealing the difficult times after her death.\nPremiered at the 2020 Rotterdam International Film Festival. \n——– \nThe film will be available to rent (UK only) for £4.99 from 10:00 on Fri 27 Nov GMT till 10:00 on Mon 30 Nov 2020 GMT on Czech Centre Vimeo on Demand via THIS LINK.\nPRE-ORDER NOW \n*** UK PREMIERE ***\nBONUS: Q&A WITH DIRECTORS ADAM OL’HA \n——–\nPart of Made in Prague 2020 ON/OFF
