SUMMARY:YiCrafts & Friends - Cultural Style Week Fashion Show
DESCRIPTION:Join YiCrafts and friends for an evening of East Asian culture\, music and fashion from China’s minority ethnicities to celebrate Cultural Style Week! \nIn the last decade\, China has burst onto the global stage; China’s economy\, culture and politics have become a part of everyday news and international events. However\, the monolithic images of China conjured by the world’s media hide the incredible diversity of a country with 55 indigenous ethnic minorities\, each with unique and colourful cultures\, crafts\, and traditions. \nIntercultural sharing is constant and often unconscious throughout our daily lives\, and handcrafts are the physical embodiment of culture and cultural sharing. Yi Crafts brings authentic experiences of China’s ethnic minority crafts and traditions to London\, making them accessible to everyone. \nThe YiCrafts Chinese ethnic minority fashion showcase will focus on traditional wear and handcrafts from Southwestern China’s beautiful ethnic minorities. Our 12 looks include daily wear to wedding wear with exquisite hand embroideries and textiles. Most outfits take more than two years to make from weaving\, dyeing and embroidery\, all done by hand. We want to share these valuable but vanishing traditional costumes and handcrafts with you and celebrate their cultures during the Cultural Festival Week to help preserve them. The fashion showcase will include fashion from: \n\nBouyei ethnic minority\nLahu ethnic minority\nBai Ku Yao ethnic minority\nMiao/Hmong ethnic minority\nDong ethnic minority\nLiangshan Yi ethnic minority\nBai ethnic minority\nDiao Cao Cun Yi ethnic minority\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGuzheng (traditional Chinese Instrument) performance by Mengna Li. \nMengna graduated from the Central Conservatory of Music in China and has performed in front of senior government officials in numerous locations worldwide. Her performance will include beautiful Spring River Flower Moon Night and Mountain Stream renditions. \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTraditional Miao ethnic minority dance called Gold Pheasant by Hongqiuye Wei and Rong Zhao. \nHongqiuye Wei is a Chinese dance artist originally from southern China’s Bouyei minority ethnicity\, and Zhao Rong is a Chinese dance artist from Xi’an\, China. Hong specializes in folk dance\, which explores movement through her identity interconnected with multiple folk-dance traditions. Zhao Rong specialises in Chinese classical and contemporary dance\, and she explores the art of cross-cultural dance through her practical experience. Together they will perform the traditional Miao ethnic minority dance called Gold Pheasant. \n  \nContemporary dance performance by Yu-Chien Cheng inspired by Bai ethnic group‘s traditional Indigo stitch resist dyeing handcrafts \nBorn and raised in Taiwan\, Yu-Chien Cheng is a freelance contemporary dance artist in London\, UK. Yu-Chien started her dance training in Ballet\, contemporary\, and Chinese dance. She continues her training by joining VERVE 22\, where she performs works by Akram Khan\, Sita Ostheimer\, and Alesandra Seutin. The three pieces are toured nationally within the UK\, including The Place (London)\, Dance House (Cardiff)\, Dance City (Newcastle)\, and Riley Theatre (Leeds). \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCultural Style Week \nEstablished in May 2022\, The London-birthed Cultural Style Week movement is a visual celebration of cultural diversity. From 21-27 May\, Cultural Style Week encourages people from all walks of life to celebrate and wear their heritage! Our in-person events combine fashion\, culture\, education and arts\, and this event ticks all boxes! \n‘YiCrafts & Friends’ is an official Cultural Style Week fashion event hosted by Nayha\, and limited tickets are available. \nFor our inaugural launch event\, the YiCrafts fashion segment included stunning pieces from China’s minority ethnicities with educational narrations. So much more is in store for this event\, so don’t miss out!

SUMMARY:Turning Earth Tottenham Winter Market
DESCRIPTION:Amidst yet another dark news cycle\, Turning Earth Winter Market returns with festive cheer and a much-needed reminder of the endless creativity of human beings. \n\n\n\nOver 100 ceramic artists will come together across two market weekends at the Turning Earth studios in Tottenham and Leyton. Open studios will accompany each market from our neighbours\, which include furniture makers\, house plant stylists\, and vintage fashion stores\, among other creative businesses. \n\n\n\nAs usual\, you can expect live music\, mulled wine and minced pies\, street food vans and barista coffee\, and the most diverse\, high-quality selection of ceramics you could find in one place anywhere. \n\n\n\nCome and hunt through Aladdin’s cave of handcrafted objects. Witness the resilience of our makers who endure failure after failure to achieve mastery in clay\, and be reminded that confrontation with adversity is often the doorway to the unexpected and the birthplace of the best ideas. \n\n\n\nYou never know; perhaps you will decide that now is finally the time to sit down and start making things yourself again.

SUMMARY:Turning Earth Highgate Ceramics Market
DESCRIPTION:Turning Earth opens its fourth London ceramics centre  – this time in Highgate – with a weekend maker market on 15/16 October.  Nose around the beautifully renovated 1930s industrial building complete with a contemplative garden\, and browse work from a hundred of London’s up-and-coming ceramicists.\n \nWith regular visitors\, including celebrity chefs Nigella Lawson and Yotam Ottolenghi\, the Turning Earth market is in the vanguard of a maker movement that\, despite many recent shocks to small industry\, continues to grow.\n \nShow solidarity with local makers as they express their creativity in the face of the energy crisis and rub off some of the peace that comes with working with the calming medium of clay. As usual\, there’ll be street food and live Klezmer music\, and – inspired by the Spring’s #CookForUkraine campaign – this time\, they’ll sell specially donated wares to raise money for displaced children supported by UNICEF as part of  #MakeForUkraine.\n

SUMMARY:CRAFT SCHOOL: A SUMMER OF PLAYFUL MAKING
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition is a result of the first year of Craft School\, Yinka’s Challenge — a national programme for schools that challenges learners aged 5-16 to get making. Led by leading London-based artist Yinka Ilori\, children from across the country took part in a schools’ challenge to craft new work in response to the themes of play\, storytelling\, and empowerment. Underpinned by Make First\, the Craft’s Council’s craft pedagogy\, the challenge placed materials into the hands of young people to encourage ‘thinking through making’. \n\n\nAt Craft School\, visitors can see the winning work of learners and teachers on display\, alongside objects from the Crafts Council’s Collection. There will be opportunities for children and families to make\, play\, get hands-on with objects from the collection and take part in discussions around the importance of craft in classrooms. \n\n\nWith opportunities for craft learning rapidly disappearing from our schools\, Craft School is a celebration of the tenacity and creativity of teachers who carve out time and space for making in their classrooms against the odds. The work on display shouts from the rooftops about the joy of making and the importance of open-ended play with materials for children and young people. \nCraft School workshop programme \n\n3 August\, 1-2.30pm\, FREE family session with Drew Richards\n10 August\, 1-2.30pm\, FREE family session with Amy Leung\n17 August\, 1-2.30pm\, FREE family session with Katherine Smith\n24 August\, 1-2.30pm\, FREE family session with Liaqat Rasul

SUMMARY:Velvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\, Syria
DESCRIPTION:With Velvet Society\, we strive to empower Syrian women and culture: it is an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and Artist Heba Al-Akkad. The exhibition is in conjunction with Refugee Week. We have also organised a series of interactive events that will complement the exhibition\, including two workshops\, one artist-led tour of the exhibition\, one live panel and one webinar.\n. \n\n\n\nAbout The Exhibition\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery is honoured to present Velvet Society\, an exhibition displaying the creative acts of survival in fashion and fabric of two Syrian women\, civil engineer Raghad Mardini and artist Heba Al-Akkad. The 90s fashion collection of Mardini\, emanating from the wealthy and powerful class of the self-styled “velvet society” prominent in 90s Syria\, will be juxtaposed with a range of vibrant artworks made in fabric and fibre by Heba Al-Akkad. A powerful dialogue will be established between these collections\, to expose a Damascus of the 90s dominated by complexes of glamour and power\, at once joyful yet troubled\, wielded both by and against the women in question.\n\n\n\n\n\nThe exhibition centres itself around the stories of these two Syrian Muslim women. From differing backgrounds\, they\, as refugees from the Syrian uprising\, struck up a friendship founded on a mutual interest in creativity within visual arts. Viewers will bear witness to their testimonies of liberation from religious and patriarchal violence. Photographs\, art objects and items of fashion are displayed to invigorate a commentary on feminism\, female freedom and Syrian history\, linked by the medium of textiles.\n\n\n\n\n\nProf. Janis Jefferies\, Emeritus Professor at Goldsmiths University\, has explained the salience of clothes in this exhibition:\n\n\n\n\nClothing carries powerful signs of non-verbal communication. It covers us\, it represents individual identities that can be played with\, disrupted and challenge what we do in our everyday lives\, both physically and sexually. If we are displaced or exiled from our homes or driven out by war\, what we wear changes. In this exhibition we see how two Muslim women become friends. They connect through art\, through their different relationship with material; a veil is worn\, designer labels are displayed. Photographs act as documents; new objects are made.\n\n\n\n\nBy bringing these stories to UK audiences in a seductive yet forceful exhibition\, fashion devotees and art lovers alike will explore the political nature of clothing\, how it shapes the representation of women in fashion\, society and art. Beliefs about Middle Eastern women will be challenged and a broader and richer recent Syrian history will emerge.\n\n\n\n\n\nHeba Al-Akkad was born in Damascus in 1981. She graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University 2006. She now lives and works in Gothenburg\, Sweden\, where she has been able to escape the cycle of familial violence and abuse that she suffered since girlhood. She has had solo shows across Europe and the Middle East. Litehouse Gallery has commissioned work from Al-Akkad on themes of self-identity and dress.\n\n\n\n\n\nRaghad Mardini\, on the other hand\, found herself inducted into the “velvet society”\, a figurative term for a class involved in high business and power in Syria during the 90s. Photographs from Mardini’s archive will give visual evidence of the velvet society\, which\, after many years of negotiating its excesses and its alienating demands\, she finally decided to reject. These photographs will be shown alongside a fashion collection supplied by western designers including Dior\, Versace\, Mugler\, Chanel\, Galliano\, YSL\, Alaia as well as Syrian designer Nicola Khoury\, all of which Mardini wore during her time within the velvet society. The exhibition will not just highlight the vibrancy of those times and the relentless glamour demanded in the velvet society\, but will look deeper into how female sexuality was weaponised in the game of politics and money.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis is an exhibition about how\, in 90s Damascus\, fabric dazzled\, lured\, sheltered\, bound\, concealed\, and\, as time wore on\, changed.\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nProgramme of Events\n\n\n\n\nAlongside the exhibition\, we are organising a series of events ranging from workshops and live panels. Many Syrian artists who had fled to Lebanon were unable to continue their practice due to trauma and financial hardship. At ARA\, for a month\, they had bed\, board\, space\, freedom\, and all the materials needed to enable them to make art again. ARA also curated exhibitions and performances worldwide.\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\nEmail info@litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nWebsite www.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\nOnline Shop www.litehousegalleryshop.co.uk/\n\n\n\n\n\nPhone +44 7833 700 984\n\n.\n\n\n\n\n\nQuick-links www.linktr.ee/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nInstagram www.instagram.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nFacebook www.facebook.com/litehousegallery\n\n\n\n\n\nTwitter www.twitter.com/Litehousegalery\n\n.\n\n\n\n\nExhibition Information\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nExhibition\n\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Society – المجتمع المخملي: Power and Glamour in 90s Damascus\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nPresented by\n\n\n\n\n\nLitehouse Gallery\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.litehousegallery.co.uk\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nVenue\n\n\n\n\n\nP21 Gallery (Kings Cross)\n\n\n\n\n\n21-27 Chalton Street\, London NW1 1JD\, UK\n\n\n\n\n\nwww.p21.gallery\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nDates\n\n\n\n\n\n23rd June – 23rd July\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nOpening Hours\n\n\n\n\n\nTuesday\, Thursday & Friday: 12 – 6pm\n\n\n\n\n\nWednesday: 12 – 8pm\n\n\n\n\n\nSaturday: 12 – 4pm\n\n\n\n\n\n.\n\nEntry is free. No appointment necessary.
