SUMMARY:An Accidental History of Tudor England – Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:How did ordinary people live in Tudor England? This unique analysis unearths the ways they died to find out. Far from the intrigues of Hampton Court Palace\, Shakespeare’s plots and the Spanish Armada\, explore the history of everyday life\, and everyday death. \nThis was a world where farming\, building and travel were dangerous. Fruit trees killed more people than guns\, and sheep killed about the same number of people as coalmines. Men stabbed themselves playing football and women drowned in the hundreds while fetching water. \nFrom bear attacks in north Oxford to a bowls-on-ice incident on the Thames\, Steven Gunn and Tomasz Gromelski use a remarkable trove of sources and stories to put common folk at the heart of Tudor England\, bringing the reality of their world to life as never before.

SUMMARY:Talk: The Dream Factory - Chelsea History Festival
DESCRIPTION:Acclaimed author Daniel Swift tells the remarkable story of Shakespeare’s first theatre – the playhouse that came before the Globe. \nAbout the event\nIn 1576\, in a muddy field in Shoreditch\, James Burbage erected London’s first purpose-built commercial playhouse. A place of high culture and quick profit\, run by cunning dreamers\, the theatre for the first time offered London’s players the chance to control what they staged. \nAt a time when playgoing was held to be close to a sin\, this entertainment factory was a flashpoint for controversy\, but it would also become Shakespeare’s first theatre\, where he learned to ply his trade before his company moved to the Globe. \nThrough the life of this little-known playhouse\, Daniel Swift tells the story of how Shakespeare became Shakespeare\, and the Elizabethan stage began to flourish.

SUMMARY:The Haunted Landscape: Folklore\, Monsters and Ghosts
DESCRIPTION:The Haunted Landscape calls again with demons in the landscape\, kings sleeping beneath the ground and the ghosts that have followed us through all of human history. Join the London Fortean Society at Conway Hall (or on the live stream) for a day of talks and short films on the folklore of Britain and beyond. \nIrving Finkel – The First GhostsIrving Finkel takes us back to the very beginning. A world-renowned authority on cuneiform\, the form creative commons of writing on clay tablets that date back to 3400BC\, Finkel has embarked upon an ancient ghost hunt\, scouring these tablets to unlock the secrets of the Sumerians\, Babylonians\, and Assyrians to breathe new life into the first ghost stories ever written. In his book The First Ghosts\, he uncovers an extraordinarily rich seam of ancient spiritual wisdom which has remained hidden for nearly 4000 years\, covering practical details of how to live with ghosts\, how to get rid of them and bring them back\, and how to avoid becoming one\, as well as exploring more philosophical questions: what are ghosts\, why does the idea of them remain so powerful despite the lack of concrete evidence\, and what do they tell us about being human?Dr Irving Finkel is Assistant Keeper of Ancient Mesopotamian (i.e. Sumerian\, Babylonian\, and Assyrian) script\, languages\, and cultures Department: the Middle East at the British Museum\, headquartered in London’s Bloomsbury. He is the curator in charge of cuneiform inscriptions on tablets of clay from ancient Mesopotamia\, of which the Middle East Department has the largest collection – some 130\,000 pieces – of any modern museum. This work involves reading and translating all sorts of inscriptions\, sometimes working on ancient archives to identify manuscripts that belong together or join one another. \nBrice Stratford – The New Forest: A Pocket of PixiesBrice Stratford discusses the specific pixie traditions of the New Forest\, which survive strongly today in genuine\, lived belief as a real exception to the rest of the country. Most are familiar with the folkloric survival of the Cornish and Devonian pixie traditions and are aware that pixie belief once extended from there across the entire south coast\, but the survival of it in the New Forest as a distinct pocket has not been commented on\, and the character of the pixies there has evolved in a different direction to that of Cornwall and Devon\, wilder and more reflective of the New Forest “Commoning” practices and culture\, in whose community the stories have survived\,Brice is an English director\, writer\, historian\, folklorist\, actor-manager\, and heritage campaigner. He is the author of Anglo-Saxon Myths: The Struggle for the Seven Kingdoms and New Forest Myths and Folklore. \nLisa Schneidau – Monsters from the Deep: River Folk Tales of Britain and IrelandWeed-strewn crones\, just waiting to pull you into the river. Swans with serious grudges and eels with drinking problems. Hideous creatures never see the light of day… until you fish them out of the river. Lisa Schneidau tells tall tales from the dark side of our freshwater folklore.Lisa Schneidau is a storyteller and environmentalist based in Dartmoor. She seeks out and shares traditional stories about the land and our complex relationship with it. Lisa is the author of River Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland\, Woodland Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland\, and Botanical Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland (all History Press). She tells stories at events\, nature reserves\, art centres\, and schools\, including performance storytelling\, training\, and storytelling development within education\, as well as helping to run South Devon Storytellers and Dartmoor Storytellers. Lisa trained as an ecologist and has worked in British nature conservation for twenty-five years. \nJeremy Harte – John Wesley and the Devil: Hell-Wrestling with the Magic MethodistsThe black flapping thing at the end of the lane was no trivial superstition but the Devil in person. Had not John Wesley himself grown up fearing the Lord through living in a haunted house? Many giants\, great and tall\, went stalking through the land\, his followers sang; if the thunder of the ogre’s voice usually reduced itself into the catcalling of an unregenerate mob\, that only confirmed its diabolical nature.Satan was a physical presence who clutched and dragged; supernatural visitants gave not just adviceand solace but enough light to illuminate a cottage room; spiritual progress was noisy and physical\, trembling\, crying\, struggling. Men of the people\, the popular preachers\, dreamed of what was to come and were guided by special providences\, shadows of the fortune-telling tracts that they had condemned. Through grace\, they cast out fiends\, dispelled ghosts\, and crushed the horrid powers of witches. Everything claimed for magic by the unworthy was done for the saints by zeal.Jeremy Harte is the curator of the Bourne Hall Museum at Epsom and Ewell. He is secretary of the Romany and Traveller Family History Society and created the Surrey Gypsy Archive. He is the author of Cloven Country: The Devil and the English Landscape (Reaktion\, 2022). \nJasper Goodall – Into The Wild NightJasper Goodall describes his work as portraying the haunted nightscape. Inspired by\, among many things\, the historical Swedish folk tradition of Årsgång\, translated as ‘the omen walk’. It is traditionally performed on new year’s eve or the winter solstice. At midnight one must walk alone and in the dark through woods to a specific location\, often the village church. Inside the woods\, one was said to encounter entities or manifestations that acted as omens for the coming year. His photographs capture stillness\, solitude\, and the sense of a hushed\, waiting presence that is perhaps more palpably felt in the hours of darkness.Goodall’s nocturnal photographs have been described as at once beautiful and terrifying. The images reference the idea that a kind of thrilling delight can be gleaned from viewing something eerie or disconcerting — imagining yourself in the dark places he visits. He teaches creativity and visual communication. He is a senior lecturer at the University of Brighton\, teaching generations of visual communicators for almost 20 years. \nDr Victoria Flood – Alderley Edge and the Dead ManAlderley Edge in North-east Cheshire (UK) is a red stand-stone escarpment above a subterranean network of mines\, associated with a long-lived legend of sleeping heroes who will awaken at a time of national crisis. A non-built heritage site now managed by the National Trust\, the Edge is intensely meaningful to a relatively small group of local stakeholders alongside a worldwide audience of readers engaged with the works of the novelist Alan Garner. Garner is perhaps best known for his Weirdstone trilogy\, set in (and underneath the surface of) Alderley Edge\, and his 2022 Booker prize-longlisted novella Treacle Walker\, which is similarly engaged with the haunted and mythologically resonant landscape of the wider region.Based on research undertaken as part of the Arts and Humanities Research-funded Invisible Worlds project\, this paper traces engagement with medieval prophecy at the Edge from the eighteenth century to the present\, exploring the emotional resonance of its multifaceted medievalisms. It takes as it centers the contested uses of the figure of the (un)dead man\, the waking sleeper beneath the Edge. \nRoy Vickery – Eerie Planet FolklorePlants have had symbolic and practical meanings and use since the beginning of human civilization. This talk on the rich variety of British and Irish folklore draws on Roy Vickery‘s unsurpassed archives collated over forty years and a wide range of historical and contemporary literature. Based on new material collected by Roy and showing that we still cling to the symbolic importance of plants. Putting conkers in wardrobes keeps moths away\, and parsley – the Devil’s plant – only germinates if sown on Good Friday.Roy worked as a botanist at the Natural History Museum\, London\, for over 30 years as the museum’s curator of vascular plants. He has published five books on plant folklore and is a former Honorary Secretary of the Folklore Society. He is president of the South London Botanical Institute. \nDaniel & Clara – Avebury Imaginary: a personal history of a stone circle & hillArtists Daniel & Clara take us on a personal journey to Avebury stone circle and Silbury Hill\, reflecting on a body of work in response to these ancient sites. \nAvebury is not just a place; it is a dream built into the landscape. \nSince meeting in 2010\, Daniel & Clara have dedicated themselves to a shared life of creative exploration\, working across moving images\, photography\, performance\, installation\, and correspondence art. Using themselves and their life together as their material\, their work explores the nature of human experience\, perception\, and reality. Set against the backdrop of the British landscape\, their work presents narratives of psychological disorientation and the human creature in crisis. SUMMARY:London Sinfonietta: Then & Now Composer Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The immersive culmination of Writing the Future\, the London Sinfonietta’s innovative composer development scheme. \nInspired by ethnomusicologist and song collector Alan Lomax\, Luke Lewis’ The Echoes Return Slow sparks a conversation between distant\, lost voices and our collective presents. \nUsing special speech transcription software to draw out the natural musical cadences of historic recordings of speech and map them into melody\, this innovative process tells the sometimes sad\, sometimes joyful songs and tales of old miners\, speaking of national identity\, striking for better pay and conditions\, unemployment\, gender roles\, language and culture; all themes as relevant today as they were fifty or a hundred years ago. \nAlicia Jane Turner’s ‘Tell me when you get home is a theatrical and sensory piece for solo soprano and ensemble that explores gendered experiences of walking alone at night. The immersive staging\, influenced by Turner’s background in sound and lighting design\, incorporates elements of patriarchal representations of femininity in mythology and horror to take us on a subversive journey into our fear of the dark. \nEach composer will join us on-stage to discuss the musical ideas behind their work and how they’ve been influenced by issues affecting society today. \n– suitable for ages 18+\n– performance contains three instances of full lighting blackout\n– contains adult language and content some audiences may find disturbing\n– Trigger Warnings: Sexual assault\, violence

SUMMARY:'Siluetas'\, Joachim Lambrechts - Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:12 November – 18 December 2021\nKristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, 2 Melior Place\, Bermondsey \nPrivate View: Thursday 11 November\, from 6:30 – 9 pm \nA skull smoking a cigarette\, an oversized duck laying an egg\, and a smiling butterfly. These are the eccentric visions of Belgian artist Joachim Lambrechts who plays with composition and form to evoke a sense of childlike joy and spontaneity. While the artist typically employs a vibrant colour palette\, his latest solo exhibition at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery\, London\, entitled Siluetas\, presents a bold new series of textural\, monochromatic works\, marking newfound confidence and aesthetic purity. \n \n  \n  \nLambrechts’ practice embraces and celebrates free creative expression. He never plans his compositions\, instead preferring to allow the image to reveal itself through the act of mark-making. Although this new series of black and white paintings express a certain restraint\, the images retain a powerful sense of dynamism which reflects the artist’s spontaneous process. With these works\, he began by pasting pieces of coloured paper onto the canvas to create a sense of texture and depth before applying layers of black paint. Broad brush strokes and lines of white colour were then used to delineate the outlines of objects and animals so that from a distance\, they appear as silhouettes or shadows. At the same time\, closer inspection reveals flashes of colour breaking through the surface where the artist has scratched or scraped away the paint. This creates a palpable tension between mark-making and erasure\, movement and stillness\, artistic abandon and creative control.\nFor this latest body of work\, Lambrechts took inspiration from early cave paintings\, which convey complex narratives and emotions despite their simplistic style. Similarly\, the artist has deliberately restricted his lines to what is only necessary to obtain a particular shape or form. The painting Pantera Negra\, for example\, depicts a black cat (or panther) whose body mainly consists of a large black shape with four vertical lines indicating the outlines of its front legs. As with all artworks\, Lambrechts’ signature graphical style simultaneously clarifies and distorts our understanding of the image. The cat’s shape appears both childlike and surreal\, just as in the painting Pegasus\, we can immediately identify the mythical horse while viewing the creature from a seemingly impossible perspective. All four of its legs appear along the same line\, bent and twisted into unnatural angles. “For me\, painting is not so much wanting to convey a message\, but rather a search for shapes\, lines and colour and seeing what possibilities they offer me\,” explains Lambrechts. At the same time\, this approach invites the viewer to engage more creatively as we are given greater freedom to interpret the compositions. \nWith some of the works\, the artist guides or destabilises our interpretation by incorporating text into the image. The words sometimes act as direct visual labels\, such as Black Eagle or Lions\, while others appear as witty modern-day aphorisms. The painting When the owl wakes up at night to kill\, we sleep\, for example\, depicts an owl seemingly in a kind of trance state\, its eyes filled with white circles and its wings extended while the text forms a literal frame or border around the edge of the canvas. In this way\, Lambrechts questions his role as an image-maker by demonstrating how our understanding of artwork is shaped by the composition itself and its framing and external contexts such as titles\, accompanying text\, and the surroundings in which the work appears. At the same time\, however\, he draws us closer to the image by inviting us to engage more actively and intimately with the artistic process.\nThese complex embedded layers of tension and bold visual contrasts are what make the artworks so compelling. By the very nature of paint\, they are static scenes while simultaneously bursting with raw\, exuberant creativity. \n  \n \n  \nAbout Joachim Lambrechts\nJoachim Lambrechts (born in 1986) is a renowned urban artist from Antwerp\, Belgium. In 2001 he began his studies at an art school in Antwerp. Later he got very involved with the graffiti and street art scene in his home city\, and in 2004 he distanced himself from his academic education and left art school without graduating. In the years that followed\, Joachim spent a lot of time experimenting with various approaches to graffiti and became quickly integrated into the Belgian street art scene. Since 2010\, painting on canvas has been Joachim’s primary focus and creating street art across Europe. \nIn contrast to his murals\, Joachim never makes preliminary studies or sketches when he starts working on a canvas. Yet\, paradoxically\, he feels more accessible within the four walls of his studio\, which is reflected in his paintings. They result from a more spontaneous process\, and as such\, possess a sense of urgency and innocence.

SUMMARY:LIFEM 2021: Liam Byrne - Concert in London
DESCRIPTION:Concert in London – “Lessons for Lyra Viol” – Liam Byrne (viola de gamba)\nAt around the same time\, John Dowland was writing his famously beautiful music for solo lute. His contemporary Alfonso Ferrabosco the Younger composed a collection of equally gorgeous\, subtle\, and elegant pieces for solo viola. Heard all too rarely today\, the repertoire is highly complex\, chordal and contrapuntal\, with Ferrabosco asking the player to tune his instrument in various non-standard ways to achieve unique resonances. As a result\, we often describe the viol as a bowed lute\, particularly in this writing style\, called playing lyra way or playing the lyra viol\, where this close relationship between the lute and viol is most apparent. \n \nThe Lyra viol’s bow is light and flexible\, and it does something halfway between plucking and singing\, like filling in the ink drawing of lute playing with strokes of delicate watercolour. In this program\, Liam Byrne intersperses selections from Ferrabosco’s 1609 collection of lyra viol lessons with some anonymous gems from unpublished manuscript sources\, as well as works by William Lawes\, Daniel Farrant\, and others. \n \nThe lyra viol is the ultimate unaccompanied repertoire for the viol. Introspective\, intimate\, and delicate\, it flourished in Britain throughout the 17th century. One of its more well-known proponents was the diarist Samuel Pepys\, who often writes of playing alone on his lyra viol before bed.

SUMMARY:LIFEM 2021: Liam Byrne & Jonas Nordberg - London International Festival of Early Music
DESCRIPTION:LIFEM 2021: Liam Byrne & Jonas Nordberg – London International Festival of Early Music\nFeaturing a World Premiere by Errollyn Wallen\, we are delighted to welcome leading exponents of their instruments\, Liam Byrne and Jonas Nordberg\, to open the London International Festival of Early Music\, with special guest Lucy Crowe. \nWith special guest Lucy Crowe\, soprano \nThe particular blend of viol and theorbo is among the Baroque period’s most delicious sonic combinations. In this concert\, Liam Byrne and Jonas Nordberg explore the rich timbral interrelationships of their instruments in the music of 17th century France. Focussing on the historical relationship between viol player Marin Marais and lutenist Robert de Visée\, both central musical figures at the court of Louis XIV\, the duo draws its inspiration from the contrasting natures of their instruments. \n \nFinding overlapping resonances in the decays and bloomings of their sounds\, they move through the perfumed harmonies of some of the past’s finest\, most refined chamber music. In addition to works by Marais\, de Visée\, and Sainte Colombe\, Jonas and Liam perform new and old rearrangements of music popular at the French court\, including works by Lully and Rameau\, among others. \nJonas Nordberg and Liam Byrne met over bacon sandwiches at breakfast with friends in London in 2016 and quickly fell into fairly deep conversation about baroque music. Finding themselves on a similar conceptual wavelength\, they decided to meet up later that day and play through some 17th-century French chamber music. The result was so satisfying that they spent their spare time hopping between London\, Stockholm\, and Berlin for the next three years to hang out and rehearse\, without a concert in sight\, just pure music-making at home and a few tiny house concerts. Finally\, in March 2019\, they gave their first public concert\, and their duo project has continued to flourish ever since.

SUMMARY:Free Art Exhibitions - Legends
DESCRIPTION:Free Art Exhibitions Free Galleries in London \nWhat does it mean to mythologise a place\, person or memory? And how do these stories shape our perception of the world\, history and different cultures? These are the questions that Edouard Baribeaud\, Tae Kim and Tendai Mupita explore through richly layered visual narratives that blur the boundaries between ancient and contemporary\, spiritual and temporal. Legends\, the latest group show at Kristin Hjellegjerde Gallery’s Wandsworth space\, presents a diverse collection of works that contemplate stories’ powerful psychological and emotional impact. \nFor this exhibition\, French-German artist Edouard Baribeaud explores the transformative and elusive qualities of light about identity and narrative. For example\, the diptych entitled George and Theodora is inspired by the vivid memory of a striking couple. The artist once encountered at a party and Paolo Uccello’s painting of the legend of Saint George and the Dragon. In his work\, Baribeaud recasts the couple into a modern-day version of the myth\, but the roles are reversed so that the princess appears as the protagonist (the knight). The painting Sebastian similarly brings together the contemporary and the classical\, taking its departing point from another brief moment witnessed by the artist. In this case\, Baribeaud was struck by an illuminated entrance hall of a building at night. “The reflections of the street lights on the glass doors and the mirrors inside the building created an almost psychedelic effect\,” he says. “I thought it would be a perfect stage for a painting.” In the image\, an elegant man waits in the hall\, as if caught in the threshold between two worlds: the interior and the exterior in both a literal and metaphorical sense. Alongside these paintings\, Baribeaud has also presented three drawings\, created in collaboration with his partner Sophia Andreotti\, which take the format of tarot cards and illustrate imagined characters representing visions of the present and the future. \nSeoul-based artist Tae Kim’s delicate paintings form part of an ongoing series entitled The Faceless Gamer\, which explores the heightened emotional experiences of the gaming world and the complex notion of identity within this realm. Each work depicts a hybrid being\, a deity-like figure\, in a distinct psychological state. While these are Kim’s imaginations of players that she’s met in online battle games\, the portraits meditate on how the distinction between digital and actual is becoming increasingly blurred and how that might impact not only our perceptions but also how we connect and socialise. Significantly\, the artist employs techniques used in ancient Joseon dynasty portrait paintings\, which aristocrats and royalty mainly commissioned to illustrate their status\, wealth and intelligence. By drawing on this tradition\, Kim elevates alternative characters and hybrid digital experiences as part of a historically significant cultural shift that offers a fluid\, creative space for people from different backgrounds to come together and shape their narratives. \nZimbabwean artist Tendai Mupita’s practice is deeply rooted in the rich heritage and stories of Shona culture. Large portions of his compositions are composed of tiny brushstrokes that create intricate\, repetitive patterns that imply a sense of texture and movement and invite the viewer to examine the surface more closely. For this exhibition\, the artist presents a captivating new series of works that explore specific cultural ideas and rituals around death and grieving. For example\, many traditional Zimbabwean kitchens feature a stoop-like structure that serves a functional purpose as a shelf for cooking pots and water storage. Still\, it also becomes an altar where the coffins are laid\, and people go to communicate with their ancestors. Mupita depicts a figure kneeling at the stoop in one painting while a god-like form appears rising amidst the patterning. While this intimate connection between life and death may seem morbid from a Western perspective\, Mupita’s use of gentle\, uplifting hues suggests a sense of harmony and connectedness. \nSimilarly\, in another artwork\, a hybrid human figure appears draped over a coffin or grave; However\, there is undoubtedly something unsettling or even monstrous about the scene. The regularity and expansiveness of the blue and white patterning in the background have a calming effect. At the same time\, the organic\, circular forms nod to the natural life cycle. \nThese works initiate an intriguing dialogue between colour\, form and texture that emphasises art’s ability to both communicate complex non-verbal experiences and break down the boundaries between different cultures and histories.

If you would like to come along for free this Sunday\, please email me at spiritofdiscoverytours@gmail.com with your name\, phone number and the number of people in your group\, and I will email you back with details of where to meet. \nI’ve put a lot of work into developing this tour and it should be a fun and educational day out. All I ask in return is some is some feedback on the tour at the end. \nWhat to expect?\nYou’ll follow in the footsteps of the great archaeologists\, relic hunters and explorers who acquired the treasures of the British Museum\, and learn about their adventures and the hazards they braved to make their astounding discoveries. \nYou’ll get to grips with the history of human civilisation\, exploring our earliest origins in Africa\, the first civilisations in Mesopotamia and the first cities\, and the great empires of Egypt\, Assyria\, Greece and Rome\, and what happened after they collapsed. \nAlong the way\, you’ll tour the British Museum’s most famous galleries\, including Ancient Egypt and Assyria\, Ancient Greece and Rome\, the Vikings and the Aztecs\, discovering world-famous artefacts such as the Rosetta Stone\, the Parthenon Marbles and the Lewis Chessmen. \nYou’ll also have some fun learning to play one of the world’s most ancient board games\, The Royal Game of Ur\, whose rules were deciphered by British Museum scholars. \nAfter lunch you’ll get down to finding out how we know what we know. You’ll hear about the geniuses who decoded ancient languages such as Egyptian hieroglyphs and Sumerian cuneiform\, the world’s earliest written language. You’ll learn the basics of these writing systems and try your hand at writing your name in these Egyptian hieroglyphs. \nYou’ll then get to grips with the science behind archaeology\, finding out how ancient objects are dated\, how ancient sites come to be buried and puzzle over some of the mysteries of the ancient world that still elude us.
