Celebrating where circus has come from and the artists who are creating it today.\nThis July\, Upswing and Culture Croydon are transforming Croydon High Street into an open-air circus for the whole family. Experience unmissable aerial and acrobatic performances above and around you\, dive into fun hands-on circus workshops\, and let your creativity run free with craft activities\, all part of a packed programme across the weekend. \n\n\nDiscover Miss La La\, Degas and Croydon\n \n\n  \nMiss La La was one of the most celebrated circus performers of the 19th century. An Afro-German aerialist whose feats of strength were so extraordinary that Edgar Degas attended her performances four nights running and painted her suspended high above the Cirque Fernando\, held only by her jaw. \nThat painting now hangs at full scale in Croydon as part of the National Gallery’s Art on Your Doorstep programme\, and this July\, Upswing is bringing the street to life in her honour. \n\nPlan your visit\nThe event runs across two days on Croydon High Street. There are performances from roller skating and hula hoop to aerial silks and acrobatics\,\, crafts activities\, workshops and a DJ spinning a mix of afrobeats and classical to set the scene on both days. Three immersive workshops will run throughout\nthe day\, where participants can create bunting and placards that will be displayed in Gabriel’s Wharf\nthroughout September. These workshops will be guided by a local artist as well as spoken word poet\,\nTia Camilleri\, who will help generate powerful messages that add an additional layer of meaning to the\nartwork. \nSaturday 28th September will be focused on live music. Having released the albums ‘The Hissing of Summer Lawns’\, ‘Hejira’\, ‘Don Juan’s Reckless Daughter’ and ‘Mingus’ (regarded as her ‘jazz period’)\, Joni then toured briefly with a band formed from the crème de la crème of contemporaneous jazz musicians (Metheny\, Mays\, Brecker\, Pastorius and Alias). The tour was recorded\, producing the outstanding live album\, ‘Shadows And Light’; it is from this album that the band Hejira is drawing the body of its repertoire. Comprising highly experienced jazz musicians\, this band is fronted by the brilliant Hattie Whitehead who not only has – in her own way – assimilated the poise\, power and beauty of Joni’s vocals\, but also plays guitar with Joni’s stylistic mannerisms. We aim to make ordinary people feel extraordinary\, find pleasure and humanity within the circus and allow our audience to be a part of that energy. Our work is fresh\, bold and beautiful. We are a circus\, proud of what we do and who we are. Our work is unashamedly skilful and deeply embedded in the exploration of the human condition. We create work that celebrates the ordinary. We don’t have six-packs\, our legs don’t go on forever\, and our faces leave a lot to be desired. \nWhat will you see? \nNo animals\, no ringmasters\, no bad clowns.  Surprisingly jaw-dropping circus. The joy of the shared experience of live performance again!\nExpect some big impact circus including Cyr wheel\, Juggling\, partner and solo acrobatics\, swinging trapeze\, straps\, Teeterboard\, hair hanging\, Tight Wire\, Clowning and hoop-diving! \nHow long is the show? \nThe show is 60 minutes. However\, the gates will open 45 mins before the show\, allowing you some time to come early\, grab a drink and some candy floss\, and get acquainted with our shiny new Big Top. \nWho is it for? \nThe show is suitable for all ages. We’ll have space to park buggies and scooters\, and we will have accessible seating available. So all are welcome under our big top\, grandparents come to wiggle your hips\, kids come and see what you shouldn’t try at home\, and everyone who has been shut inside for the past 18 months\, come and have some fun with us! \nWhere is it? \nWe have landed in Leyton Jubilee Park in our circus big top tent. DESCRIPTION:Stand up comedy\, which is just a short walk from Hammersmith tube station and the Apollo. The Grove bar and restaurant is an award-winning restaurant\, which is often visited by celebrities\, such as: Alan Sugar\, Adrian Charles\, Bill Bailey and Olly Murs. \nComedy night starts at 8 and finishes at 9pm. Show features up and coming comedians on the London scene. This is so we can keep track of who has come in and out each show.
