SUMMARY:Breaking Ground – A Regenerative Approach exhibition
DESCRIPTION:How does architecture respond to our climate and ecological emergencies? How does the urban design respond to women’s safety and community cohesiveness? \n\n\n\nGbolade Design Studio is celebrating 5years of practice\, and ‘Breaking Ground’ is set up as a provocation to the public. We are living with the consequences of an extractive design and construction system. How must we now act to become responsible and inclusive stewards of our future. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition explores five key themes using the practices’ projects which adopt sustainable and regenerative approaches to respond to some of these pressing issues in society. Themes include; city-shaping\, retrofit\, net-zero homes\, community-building\, and innovation in construction. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition itself has been designed to be as sustainable and regenerative as possible\, with recyclable boards being used and an after-exhibition reuse plan. The practice has chosen to work with local businesses and suppliers\, including printers\, plant suppliers\, and catering companies. \n\n\n\nThe venue\, The Africa Centre\, was selected due to its close proximity to Southwark Station\, with the practice encouraging all visitors to use public transport\, rather than driving\, wherever possible. \n\n\n\nThe exhibition has been designed with hopes to inspire the next generation of built environment specialists to challenge ideas of what a regenerative future might be. To this end\, Gbolade Design Studio have arranged school tours with local primary schools.

SUMMARY:Supermodels Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In the eerie setting of a building site awaiting refurbishment\, multidisciplinary design and architecture studio Piercy&Company presents a performance of animated models of their buildings and projects – reconnecting our digital and physical worlds through a childlike sense of wonder and delight as their amazing models spring into life. \nResonating with the mysterious allure of miniature objects with lives of their own – think doll’s houses\, cuckoo clocks and model railways – Supermodels employs mechanical automata\, projection mapping\, scent and lighting to create a new\, more engaging way of communicating architectural concepts. \nExploring exciting new possibilities for an age-old form of architectural communication\, Supermodels distils the studio’s 20 years of research into the sensory and haptic dimensions of architecture. Each model encapsulates the essence of Piercy&Company‘s design approach to building typologies spanning from commercial developments to churches. \nThe models were handmade by Piercy&Company’s architecture team to explore and test experiential aspects of architecture\, including the spatial\, the tectonic and the tactile. \n  \nDates \nFriday 25 November until Sunday 11 December \n  \nOpening Hours \n12pm-7pm Monday to Friday \n12pm-5pm Saturday and Sunday \nor by appointment supermodels@piercyandco.com \n  \n  \nAddress \nJahn Court\, Regent Quarter \n34 York Way (entrance of York Way) \nLondon \nN1 9AB

SUMMARY:Mind The ‘Green Gap’: Houseplant Hideout Opens In East London To Combat Nature Deficit
DESCRIPTION:Thejoyofplants.co.uk today announces the opening of a ‘Houseplant Hideout’ in East London’s urban jungle\, Shoreditch’s BoxPark. Designed to banish autumn blues for the 48% of Brits who say they are dreading winter this year and to help bring nature into homes and home office spaces these cold seasons\, the Houseplant Hideout is ultimately designed to transport consumers to a biophilic wonderland of Zen. \nWith half (52%) confessing that nature is the top thing they’ve missed during the lockdown in recent research commissioned by Thejoyofplants.co.uk\, the houseplant experts have set about bringing a rich\, rejuvenating biophilic dreamworld to the heart of the concrete jungle. By placing over 300 houseplants into a handcrafted 10m installation\, with rotating chairs\, soft lighting and a mindfulness audio meditation crafted by plant spirit expert Holly Worton\, the Houseplant Hideout is set to transport visitors to another world. \nOpen to the public from the 7th of October at 10 am\, ‘Houseplant Hideout’ invites individuals to get lost – Alice in Wonderland style – in a lush green forest bathing immersion where the magical power of houseplants stimulates every sense. Upon stepping inside this tranquil oasis\, visitors will be transported into an interactive biophilic wonderland complete with a six-metre vertical kaleidoscope to be fully engulfed in nature and give them a magical moment for the gram. With terrariums portals to peek through from the outside to a lush moss flooring\, this event is designed to show how easy it is to bring the natural landscape into the interior landscape – just in time for winter. \nThejoyofplants.co.uk has collaborated with award-winning designer and architect DaeWha Kang to create the hideout – a monolithic landmark bringing biophilic principles to life with a unique space for people to retreat\, reflect and recharge – as part of their successful Thanks Plants campaign. With the safe space of our homes overtaken by work and more than ever\, we need quietude\, shelter\, and moments of beauty and tranquillity brought back into our home working spaces to avoid a nature deficit. \nRenowned botanist James Wong has carefully curated the houseplants inside\, selecting varieties for their wellbeing and biophilic benefits\, such as Strelitzia Nicolai’s that help take in CO2 and harmful toxins and release oxygen to plants and terrariums that help boost concentration whilst working from our home offices. \nPlant spirit expert Holly Worton has crafted a special plant meditation visitors can try out during their time in the installation and also listen at home to relax\, or on their lunch break via a link supplied on their visit. Talking to plants has long been proven to help them grow\, but Holly takes this one step further. Creating a meditation that reinforces our connection to plants by assisting consumers to get into a relaxed state helps us reach states of consciousness that allow for communication beyond humans. \nOpen to the public for free from 7th October to 9th October 2021 located at The Green in BOXPARK Shoreditch. Consumers will be allowed to book an individual session lasting 10 or 15 minutes here. The hideout is also designed with passers-by and houseplant enthusiasts in mind who can still enjoy the installation by peeking through the numerous portals and spotting our hand-made terrariums by James Wong\, discover magical houseplant scenes and capture inspiration and photography of this shrine to the wonder of houseplants.

SUMMARY:
Brutal Beauty: A Video Tour of the Czech and Slovak Embassies in London + live Q&A
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a tour of one of the prime examples of Brutalist architecture in London\, discover what’s hiding behind the facade of the Czech and Slovak Embassies. \nOwen Hatherley\, architecture critic and author of Landscapes of Communism: A History through Buildings\, will guide you through the recently refurbished London Czech Embassy from its spectacular roof terrace with iconic water towers to the original cinema in the basement\, exploring also the original interior of the Slovak Embassy where raw concrete is juxtaposed with artistic and decorative elements. \nDesigned by the leading Czech architects Jan Šrámek\, Jan Bočan and Karel Štěpánský\, in collaboration with the architect of the Royal Festival Hall\, Robert Mathew\, it marked a significant redevelopment in the Notting Hill Gate area in the late ‘60s. \nLooking back to pre-war Czech Modernism and post-war architecture\, Owen Hatherley will discuss its influence in Britain while exploring the obtuse angles and concrete details of the building designed in accordance with the prevailing architectural trends and representing the best of Brutalist architecture. \nOrganised by the Czech Centre London in collaboration with the Czech and Slovak Embassies in London and the London Festival of Architecture. \nTo receive a reminder and ZOOM link for the discussion\, book via Eventbrite:\nhttps://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/brutal-beauty-a-video-tour-of-the-czech-and-slovak-embassies-in-london-tickets-151604780981

SUMMARY:Terra Nexus
DESCRIPTION:Terra Nexus is an immersive experience featuring 25 artists produced by Proposition Studios. First opening at our former site in Peckham in October 2020\, the exhibition has now been reconstructed\, expanded and developed with 3 new installations and a new navigation around a multi-sensory labyrinthine of interconnected artist worlds. Sitting in the heart of 150 artist studios overlooking the Thames\, Terra Nexus presents interwoven immersive environments which reflect on the human relationship with the biosphere set against the backdrop of an ancient metropolis that is reawakening into a new post lockdown reality. \nSpringing from the foundational idea that we need to shift away from a narrative of human dominion and independence in order to protect the biosphere\, Terra Nexus installations explore the necessity of living soil; the perpetual migration of species; the cascading threat of impending extinctions; ways to reconnect with nature; conflict arising from depleted resources; the future of cities and how humans will live within them. From the perspectives of insects and animals\, through the eyes of scientists\, artificial intelligence\, plant life\, ancient cultures and conflicting contemporary viewpoints; Terra Nexus is a wormhole of ideas. \nWarping sensory experiences\, excavating\, weaving between co-existing timelines and suggesting alternative histories; this is the first of a series of immersive projects by Proposition Studios asking the viewer to raise their own questions about THE HUMAN AS PART OF ECOLOGY and what that means today and for future generations. \nIn preparation for this project\, the exhibiting artists took part in an intensive research residency\, visiting sites where human intervention has dramatically increased biodiversity while providing for human needs. Inspired by these projects of experts working to regenerate the biosphere and address global food problems; installations directly reference cutting edge science\, biodiverse agriculture and environmental activism.

SUMMARY:Art Deco in Baker Street Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:– A Study in Modern(e) Style and Elementary Elegance –From a block of flats boasting the largest rooftop garden in Europe to a towering head office offering passersby a guiding light\, ‘Art Deco in Baker Street’ explores how one of London’s most widely known streets has managed to strike an interesting balance between traditional and modern architecture. While following along the traces of bygone bazaars and lost cinemas\, the game is truly going to be afoot and visitors will not only be discovering how department stores and corporations have infused Jazz Age flair into their shop fittings and office facilities\, but also\, as if channeling the nefarious world of Sherlock Holmes himself\, be hearing tales about a mysterious ‘Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde’-style case of double identity\, a bold and brash bank heist (semi) gone wrong as well as a delightfully unconventional school for women detectives.

We can no longer think of distinct spaces for work\, play\, domesticity\, and rest. We are living in a 24/7 culture. Industrialisation brought with it the eight-hour shift and the radical separation between the home and the office or factory\, between rest and work\, night and day. Post-industrialisation collapses work back into the home and takes it further into the bedroom and into the bed itself. Networked electronic technologies have removed any limit to what can be done in bed. Millions of dispersed beds are taking over from concentrated office buildings. The boudoir is defeating the tower. This lecture explores the new role of the bed as the epicentre of labour\, post-labour and love in the age of social media \nAbout the Speaker\nBeatriz Colomina is the Howard Crosby Butler Professor of the History of Architecture at Princeton University and a 2018–2019 fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. She writes and curates on questions of design\, art\, sexuality and media. Her books include Sexuality and Space (Princeton Architectural Press\, 1992)\, Privacy and Publicity: Modern Architecture as Mass Media (MIT Press\, 1994)\, Domesticity at War (MIT Press\, 2007)\, The Century of the Bed (Verlag fur Moderne Kunst\, 2015)\, Manifesto Architecture: The Ghost of Mies (Sternberg\, 2014)\, Clip/Stamp/Fold: The Radical Architecture of Little Magazines 196X–197X (Actar\, 2010)\, Are We Human? Notes on an Archaeology of Design (Lars Muller\, 2016). She has curated a number of exhibitions including Clip/Stamp/Fold (2006)\, Playboy Architecture (2012) and Radical Pedagogies (2014). In 2016 she was co-curator of the third Istanbul Design Biennial. Her latest book is X-Ray Architecture (Lars Muller\, 2019). \nAbout the Lecture Series\nThis series supports outstanding scholarship in the history of architecture and allied fields\, building on the work of Professor Robin Evans (1944-1993). It encourages scholars working on the relationship between the spatial and social domains in architectural drawing\, construction and beyond. Evans’ work interrogated the spaces that existed between drawing and building\, geometry and architecture\, teasing out the points of translation often overlooked. From his early work on prison design and domestic spaces\, through to his later work on architectural geometry\, Evans sought to articulate the multiple points at which the human imagination could influence architectural form. His first book\, The Fabrication of Virtue\, analysed the way that spatial layouts provided opportunities for social reform via their interference with morality\, privacy and class. In The Projective Cast: Architecture and its Three Geometries\, Evans traced the origins of the humanist tradition to understand how human form influenced architectural drawing and construction\, focusing on aesthetic dimensions in the production of architectural space. This series will provide opportunities for the creation and/or dissemination of work by scholars working on similar questions of space\, temporality\, and architecture. In particular\, it supports work that breaks the boundaries of traditional disciplines to think though these complex networks involved in the space between human imagination and architectural production.

SUMMARY:Sharon Drew – Immersion
DESCRIPTION:Sharon Drew has been invited to exhibit her abstract paintings at William Road Gallery. By recreating the sensation of light\, colour\, rhythm and movement Drew finds in landscape\, her work brings a visceral element to the gallery setting. \nThis new series includes large-scale paintings and captures the essence of visits to urban and coastal shorelines. Building up opaque and translucent layers with repetitive and rhythmic gestures she emulates the constant fluctuations of nature. \nIn contrast to the measured and calculated methods of the architects whose practice houses the gallery\, Drew’s works result from a process of only just controlling the paint\, of letting the material lead the way. The desire is to be spontaneous and completely in the moment\, and to share this sense of immersion with the viewer. \n  \nMondays-Fridays

SUMMARY:The British Mosque: An Architectural and Social History
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a presentation of Shahed Saleem latest book\, the first overview of Muslim architecture in Britain from the earliest examples in the late 19th century\, to mosques being built today. \n \nThe analysis focuses on the way in which the mosque as a new cultural and architectural form has become embedded into the existing urban fabric of Britain’s towns and cities\, and how this new building type has then impacted its urban landscape\, socially\, culturally and architecturally. As an architect\, researcher and lecturer living and working in East London\, Saleem focuses on community architecture and places of worship. Not content with lumping in a couple of minarets and being done with it\, Saleem believes we can use mosque architecture to merge elements of British and Muslim identity\, so he’s been speaking to and making harmonious designs that connect with both Muslim communities and their surroundings. He says: “We do have to generate our own architectural language which reflects our European Muslim identity.” \nWe are thankful to the Barakat Trust and The Pakistan Society for their support. This even is part of the core porgramme of the London Festival of Architecture. \n \nGeneral Admission – £10\, Asia House Members – 50% off\, Concessions £8\, Students – FREE
