SUMMARY:Nina | Battersea Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:“I’m a seagull. No\, that’s not right. I’m an actress.”\nA series of actresses audition to play Nina in The Seagull for a charismatic\, yet sinister director. His methods are unorthodox\, annihilating\, and very effective. \nIn a debut play from celebrated director Caroline Williams\, co-directed by award-\nwinning artist Deborah Pearson\, NINA questions why so many women are drawn to\nplay an actress who has everything taken away from her by men. And why do the men\nin Chekhov’s original play keep trying to turn the girls they fancy into dead seagulls? \nIn a post #MeToo era\, NINA is a meta theatrical fever dream on coercion\, power and the quest for creative expression. \n“One of the most insightful encounters I have had in a theatre.” Theatre Voices \n“If the opportunity presents itself to see Pearson’s work you must go immediately.” The Huffington Post

SUMMARY:The Abbey Art Centre as Postwar Refuge\, 1946–56
DESCRIPTION:Ben Uri is delighted to announce the upcoming exhibition\, The Abbey Art Centre as Postwar Refuge\, 1946–56\, marking the simultaneous publication of The Abbey Art Centre in postwar London 1946–1956\, eds.\, Jane Eckette\, Ian McLean and Sheridan Palmer (Routledge)\, this autumn. \nThe exhibition unfolds the remarkable story of the Abbey Art Centre\, a cosmopolitan art colony established at New Barnet in 1946 by charismatic artist\, gallerist and world art collector\, William Ohly (1883–1955). A crucible of creativity on London’s northern edge\, the Abbey was a postwar haven for stateless Jewish refugees\, as well as artists from Australia\, Britain and continental Europe. Ohly’s openness to outsiders extended to his dealings at the Berkeley Galleries in Mayfair\, which opened in late 1941 during the Blitz and where Abbey artists occasionally exhibited\, as well as Commonwealth artists and artists from Ohly’s own world art collection. The Abbey was an important seeding bed for cross-cultural and transnational modernism that proved pivotal to the careers of many artists\, as they navigated the seismic political and cultural shifts taking place in the postwar and postcolonial artistic landscape in Britain and beyond. \nFeaturing paintings\, sculpture\, drawings\, monotypes\, lithographs\, puppets and related photographs\, books and archival materials\, the exhibition includes artworks by Abbey residents Scottish painter Alan Davie\, English sculptor Peter King\, English painter Lilian Colbourn\, German émigré painters and printmakers Marcel Frishman\, Margret Kroch-Frishman and William Ohly\, Austrians Helen Grünwald and Angela Varga\, sculptors Inge King and Gudrun Krüger\, pioneering German animator Lotte Reiniger\, Ukrainian painter Stacha Halpern\, Australian constructivist Robert Klippel and painters James Cant and Mary Webb. Narrative sub-themes include the impact of African and Indigenous Australian art on emerging artists and socially conscious painter-printmakers working in London’s East End. The exhibition also features a small number of artists associated with the Berkeley Galleries including Nigerian modernist Ben Enwonwu\, German sculptor Fred Kormis and Prussian-born graphic artist Katerina Wilczynski\, as well as related photographs\, books and archival materials. \nA book launch and a related series of events will accompany the exhibition.

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions | Steve Mason: In Conversation and Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Scottish singer-songwriter and Beta Band founder Steve Mason joins The Long Play Sessions to discuss his long-awaited memoir\, Failure Is Always an Option – a candid\, hilarious and deeply personal account of one of British music’s most fascinating and uncompromising careers.\n\n\n\nFrom the Beta Band’s genre-defying rise in the late 1990s to sold-out tours with Radiohead\, critical acclaim and spectacular self-sabotage\, Steve reflects on the highs\, lows and chaos of a life lived entirely on his own terms. Blending sharp wit with remarkable honesty\, he explores youth culture\, creativity\, addiction\, failure\, success and redemption\, setting the record straight—or\, as he puts it\, “straight-ish.”\n\n\n\nCelebrated by contemporaries including Oasis\, Primal Scream\, The Chemical Brothers\, The Verve and Radiohead\, the Beta Band became one of Britain’s most influential cult bands\, renowned for their fearless experimentation and unforgettable live performances. Following their acclaimed reunion and sold-out return to the stage\, Steve now looks back on the extraordinary story behind the music in what promises to be an unforgettable evening.\n\n\n\nThe event includes an in-depth conversation with Steve and acclaimed author and journalist Travis Elborough\, an audience Q&A\, and a book signing\, with copies of Failure Is Always an Option available to purchase on the night. \n\nWhether you’re a lifelong Beta Band fan or simply love great stories from the world of music\, this is a rare opportunity to hear from one of Britain’s most original and enigmatic artists.

DESCRIPTION:scenecollapser x Shadow World Presents:\n\n\n\nTHEA GRANT\n\n\nLast seen with Jenny Hval across the UK and EU in 2025\, this is a new era of deeply evocative conceptual sound design; heart wrenching\, abstract composition overflowing with yearning and romanticism. Unmissable.\n\n\n\nREALITY\n\n\nBuilding on nearly three decades of activity within countercultural creative spaces in punk\, metal and avant-garde\, REALITY explores constructivist philosophies\, transcendent experiences and a sprawling collection of creative touch points. Heavy and emotional.\n\n\n\nRIEKO\n\n\nRitualistic experimental pop from Japanese-American multidisciplinary artist\, musician\, and co-founder of Diasporas Now. Echoing\, incantation-like vocals over electronic and club rhythms; drawing on Japanese folk lullabies\, heavy metal\, and rave culture alike.\n\n\n\nREMOTE VIEWING\n\n\nNoise-rock\, hardcore\, post-rock\, shoegaze from folks from Abjure\, Palehorse\, Million Dead\, and Sly & The Family Drone. Heavy riffs\, with hearty nods to Art of Burning Water\, Knut and Curl Up And Die.\n\n\n\n3D JESUS\n\n\nPost-rock with well-considered free improvisations\, that recall the expansive experimentalism of Constellation Records‘ more raucous moments\, and the raw intimacy and post-folk of Pygmy Lush. SUMMARY:The Hound of the Baskervilles | King’s Head Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary Sherlock Holmes tale\, first published 125 years ago\, comes to life in a wildly enjoyable\, fun-filled comedy mystery. \nWhen Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead in the grounds of Baskerville Hall\, his family estate on Dartmoor\, with a look of terror carved on his face and the paw prints of a gigantic hound beside him\, the great detective Sherlock Holmes is summoned from Baker Street. Three super-talented West Country actors – Ezra Clarke\, Robert Carden and Gabe Willem – play fourteen roles between them in this ultra-high-energy comedy. Produced and directed by award-winning director Steven Clarke\, this production is suitable for ages 8+ \n‘A brilliant\, funny show\, with a great cast\, playful direction and hundreds of jokes.’ — Gareth Edwards\, veteran BBC/Channel 4 comedy producer.
