SUMMARY:Nina | Battersea Arts Centre
DESCRIPTION:“I’m a seagull. No\, that’s not right. I’m an actress.”\nA series of actresses audition to play Nina in The Seagull for a charismatic\, yet sinister director. His methods are unorthodox\, annihilating\, and very effective. \nIn a debut play from celebrated director Caroline Williams\, co-directed by award-\nwinning artist Deborah Pearson\, NINA questions why so many women are drawn to\nplay an actress who has everything taken away from her by men. And why do the men\nin Chekhov’s original play keep trying to turn the girls they fancy into dead seagulls? \nIn a post #MeToo era\, NINA is a meta theatrical fever dream on coercion\, power and the quest for creative expression. \n“One of the most insightful encounters I have had in a theatre.” Theatre Voices \n“If the opportunity presents itself to see Pearson’s work you must go immediately.” The Huffington Post

SUMMARY:The Abbey Art Centre as Postwar Refuge\, 1946–56
DESCRIPTION:Ben Uri is delighted to announce the upcoming exhibition\, The Abbey Art Centre as Postwar Refuge\, 1946–56\, marking the simultaneous publication of The Abbey Art Centre in postwar London 1946–1956\, eds.\, Jane Eckette\, Ian McLean and Sheridan Palmer (Routledge)\, this autumn. \nThe exhibition unfolds the remarkable story of the Abbey Art Centre\, a cosmopolitan art colony established at New Barnet in 1946 by charismatic artist\, gallerist and world art collector\, William Ohly (1883–1955). A crucible of creativity on London’s northern edge\, the Abbey was a postwar haven for stateless Jewish refugees\, as well as artists from Australia\, Britain and continental Europe. Ohly’s openness to outsiders extended to his dealings at the Berkeley Galleries in Mayfair\, which opened in late 1941 during the Blitz and where Abbey artists occasionally exhibited\, as well as Commonwealth artists and artists from Ohly’s own world art collection. The Abbey was an important seeding bed for cross-cultural and transnational modernism that proved pivotal to the careers of many artists\, as they navigated the seismic political and cultural shifts taking place in the postwar and postcolonial artistic landscape in Britain and beyond. \nFeaturing paintings\, sculpture\, drawings\, monotypes\, lithographs\, puppets and related photographs\, books and archival materials\, the exhibition includes artworks by Abbey residents Scottish painter Alan Davie\, English sculptor Peter King\, English painter Lilian Colbourn\, German émigré painters and printmakers Marcel Frishman\, Margret Kroch-Frishman and William Ohly\, Austrians Helen Grünwald and Angela Varga\, sculptors Inge King and Gudrun Krüger\, pioneering German animator Lotte Reiniger\, Ukrainian painter Stacha Halpern\, Australian constructivist Robert Klippel and painters James Cant and Mary Webb. Narrative sub-themes include the impact of African and Indigenous Australian art on emerging artists and socially conscious painter-printmakers working in London’s East End. The exhibition also features a small number of artists associated with the Berkeley Galleries including Nigerian modernist Ben Enwonwu\, German sculptor Fred Kormis and Prussian-born graphic artist Katerina Wilczynski\, as well as related photographs\, books and archival materials. \nA book launch and a related series of events will accompany the exhibition.

SUMMARY:Deep into the Sixties – David Kynaston in conversation with Samira Ahmed (In person)
DESCRIPTION:It’s the heart of the Sixties in Britain – the Beatles and the Stones vie at the top of the charts\, England win the World Cup\, and optimism and patriotism percolate through the streets. But this is not the full story of mid-Sixties Britain. Disaffection on the political left increasingly focuses on the escalating Vietnam War; and the ambitious hopes of Harold Wilson’s Labour government start to founder on the precarious state of the pound. It is a time of looking both backwards and forwards – sweeping reforms to secondary education\, huge swathes of urban redevelopment and the irresistible rise of a confident\, free-spending youth culture. Yet everyday life for many\, especially beyond the big cities\, bears a striking resemblance to decades earlier. \nLegendary historian\, David Kynaston\, discusses the latest instalment in his landmark Tales of a New Jerusalem series\, Deep Into the Sixties: Britain 1965–66\, which paints a richly nuanced picture of unrivalled detail\, revolutionising how we see post-war Britain and the so-called Swinging Sixties. He’ll be in conversation with journalist and broadcaster Samira Ahmed\, whose new BFI Film Classics book on the Beatles film A Hard Day’s Night similarly explores the shifting cultural landscape of 1960s Britain. \nDavid Kynaston has been a professional historian since 1973 and is the author of nineteen critically acclaimed books. His continuing history of postwar Britain\, Tales of a New Jerusalem\, has so far comprised Austerity Britain\, Family Britain\, Modernity Britain\, On the Cusp and A Northern Wind. He has also written several books on aspects of cricket history including the award-winning Arlott\, Swanton and the Soul of English Cricket (with Stephen Fay) and Richie Benaud’s Blue Suede Shoes (with Harry Ricketts). \nSamira Ahmed is a journalist\, writer and BBC broadcaster. She presents Front Row on BBC Radio 4\, Newswatch on BBC One\, and has made acclaimed documentaries including Art of Persia (BBC Four)\, Disgusted\, Mary Whitehouse\, and I Dressed Ziggy Stardust (BBC Radio 4). In 2020\, she was named Audio Presenter of the Year by the Broadcasting Press Guild. Her writing has appeared in The Guardian\, The Observer\, and New Humanist\, where she also writes a regular column. A Hard Day’s Night is her first book. \nOur events programme is presented in partnership with Hakluyt & Company\, the global strategic advisory firm for businesses and investors. \nBooks by both speakers will be available to buy at the event and online from our partner bookshop Hatchards. \nThis event will take place in person at The London Library. Doors (and the bar) will open at 6.30pm for a 7pm start. Please see our Event Access Guidelines before you arrive. \nLondon Library events are subject to Terms & Conditions

SUMMARY:The Hound of the Baskervilles | King’s Head Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary Sherlock Holmes tale\, first published 125 years ago\, comes to life in a wildly enjoyable\, fun-filled comedy mystery. \nWhen Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead in the grounds of Baskerville Hall\, his family estate on Dartmoor\, with a look of terror carved on his face and the paw prints of a gigantic hound beside him\, the great detective Sherlock Holmes is summoned from Baker Street.
