SUMMARY:International Translation Day Editorial Slam with English PEN (In person)
DESCRIPTION:This participatory event\, in partnership with English PEN\, sees two editors take part in an ‘editorial slam’. Based on the ‘translation slam’ model\, it explores the collaborative acts of writing\, translating and editing by asking Sceptre Editorial Director Ansa Khan and Robina Pelham Burn to edit the same passage of text\, translated from the Arabic\, a language in which neither of them read. \nDuring the event\, they will see each other’s edits for the first time\, and with the text’s translator\, Nashwa Nasreldin\, who will chair the conversation\, discuss their choices and the rationales behind them. The audience\, including translators and fellow editors\, will have the chance to discuss their edits\, exploring the particular challenges and opportunities of editing work in translation; how to edit well when a text is deeply rooted in cultural\, linguistic\, or geographical specificity; and what editors must hold onto and what they must give up. \nInternational Translation Day (ITD) is celebrated annually on 30 September with a programme of events and workshops from English PEN\, taking place throughout September online and in person in London and Norwich. \nEnglish PEN is one of the world’s oldest human rights organisations\, championing the freedom to write and read. They are the founding centre of PEN International\, a worldwide writers’ association with 130 centres in more than 90 countries. With the support of their members – a community of readers\, writers\, and activists – they protect freedom of expression whenever it is under attack\, support writers facing persecution around the world\, and celebrate contemporary international writing with literary prizes\, grants\, events and an online magazine https://pentransmissions.com/ \nThis event will take place in person in the New Room at The London Library. Please see our Event Access Guidelines before you arrive. Doors (and the bar) will open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start.

SUMMARY:History Has No Safe Word | Cockpit Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Professor Nathan Zangari is fading away.\nOnce voted the sexiest professor on BBC2’s Open University\, his highly celebrated archeo-linguistics paper on “Graffiti\, Women and the Walls of Pompeii” is now but a distant memory.\nNow\, he can’t sleep\, he can’t get published\, and… he can’t get laid.\nAt the sleep-study clinic that he’s enrolled at\, they observe him talking in his sleep\, seemingly an intermediary for a long-forgotten Pompeian girl. \nWhen overambitious student\, Callie\, offers to capture his mumblings\, they both find themselves sucked into the very real lives of those on the edge of destruction\, some 2000 years ago. \n“… masterful stagecraft … immersive and engaging throughout… a highly accomplished piece of writing and performance… a visceral portrayal of life in Pompeii on the eve of the infamous Vesuvian eruption in 79 CE. \nBrown clearly knows his history\, and the way he brings Pompeii to life is nothing short of astonishing. There is a gripping action scene in the second half that had my wife reaching out her arms to intervene\, so immersed was she in the story. \nIf historical drama is your thing\, you’re in for a treat.”  Fringe Review\, 2026. \n  \nGet your tickets HERE

SUMMARY:Fire Fire | Arcola Theatre
DESCRIPTION:Today\, Eddie is holding a memorial for his brother at a park near their council estate. Today is also the day Paige decides to close the road to this countryside sanctuary in a protest about climate action. \n\nNaturally\, when the pair meet\, sparks fly\, insults are traded in a fiery exchange\, and they expect never to see each other again. \nBut they do. Again. And again. And again. \nUntil they feel there’s no choice but to join forces and take drastic action together. \nFire Fire is an exciting\, moving drama about people taking big risks to protest\, people who love to hate them\, and how some people discover they have more in common than they think.

SUMMARY:Bury Me Before You Marry Me
DESCRIPTION:In some parts of Asia\, there is a belief:\nwhen a young man dies unmarried\, his parents will find him a bride and hold a ghost wedding to accompany him in death. \nSometimes\, the bride is a corpse.\nSometimes\, the woman being buried is still alive. \nOne day\, a British man named Jason discovers that his Chinese girlfriend has been involved in a ghost marriage… \n___________________________________________________________________ \nThis is a dark comedy. An immersive interactive theatre experience. \nThe audience does not simply watch the story. They become part of it.\nYou will interact with the characters\, and at key moments\, you will make crucial decisions on their behalf.\nEvery choice will completely change the direction of the story. As a result\, each performance leads to a different ending and different fates for the characters. \nThis is a ritual that requires your participation.\nThe ending is yours to decide. \nProduced and presented by Susu Productions \nGet your tickets HERE
