LONDON FESTIVAL OF ARCHITECTURE // The Building Site // Lithuanian Films about Nature

This weekend you will be able to get to know three young and very talented documentary film makers from Lithuania and Lithuanian legendary film maker JONAS MEKAS. Their short films and trailers will be shown at The Building Site / London Festival of Architecture pavilion, built as a tiny Lithuanian forest in front of St. Paul’s Cathedral at the London Festival of Architecture. The movies will be possible to watch during the opening hours of the pavilion.

ANCIENT WOODS (Sengirė / The Ancient Woods), by Mindaugas Survila, 2017
The documentary poem “The Ancient woods” focuses on the inhabitants of an old growth forest – birds, animals as well as elderly people living nearby. The film will guide its viewer through the dense woods, wolf holes, up to an eagles’ nest, down to the underwater forest, sunk thousands of years ago and back to the man’s home. In the cottage the time is “human”: days and hours seem to be on pause. Yet is it easy for a man to obey the flow of the nature, undividable into hours and minutes? Or does the growing old become his essence? The film gently erases the line separating the human and natural lives, interweaving them into a single poetic story. Its style and narrative bring it close to a fantasy tale.

The Building Site is an urban intervention and design installation at the London Festival of Architecture. It questions the changing ownership of public space in London and invites to reflect on the impact of rapid urbanization on local communities and natural ecosystems. The installation occupies a significant piece of public space to create a new ‘building site’—a signature mark for London in transition. However, fenced off with construction site hoarding, The Building Site provides an unexpected forest-like experience inside.

We invite you to visit this hidden experimental garden in the heart of London and connect with the power of nature. Each weekend, The Building Site will host poetry readings, music performances, video screening, and debates. During these events, visitors will have a chance to explore the diverse and unique interpretations of human relation to nature.
