N°1 – Solo Exhibition by Artist Jeremy Burns
February 19 @ 10:00 am - March 2 @ 5:00 pmFree
A collection of abstract drawings and paintings.
N°1 is the London based artist Jeremy Burns’ first solo exhibition.
Drawing influence from Cubism and Futurism as well as electronic music artists such as Aphex Twin and Autechre, this exhibition of work produced between 2016-2019 charts the development in Burns’ style from sharper lines and opaque colour to a looser, more experimental approach.
Burns transports the viewer into abstract scenes in which angular shapes and shadows contrast with organic, textural marks, creating a sense of movement, space and ambiguity.
Rather than having any preconceived idea, he allows the process to determine the outcome. Responses from the making of haphazard marks leads to them being developed and connected until they pull together and unify into something beautiful.
Having an interest in portraiture, Burns initially studied Fine Art, before becoming disillusioned with the lack of instruction in drawing and painting. He opted to pursue a self-taught approach, becoming an accomplished portrait artist while developing his other passion – classical guitar. This lead him to Glasgow where he discovered electronic music. Burns notes:
“I was amazed by the complex networks of entangled melodies and drum patterns constantly interchanging in electronica. There are parallels with these kinds of visual and audible experiences, where something initially unclear, can emerge into structures then dissolve as we shift between marks, colours, harmonies or musical notes. It’s this interaction that is of particular interest, and the potential to see something different each time you look.”
You can see the first exhibition by Jeremy Burns at Cass Art in Angel from the 19th February to the 2nd of March 2019.
Private View: Thursday 21st of Feb, 6-8pm, at Cass Art, 66-67 Colebrooke Row, London, N1 8AB (All are welcome, no need to RSVP!)
