London Flower Business
Introduction
The Floral industry began in England approximately in the late 1800s. Floriculture in those days remained confined to the landscape of vast estates possessed by the aristocrats of England. However in the current scenario the floral industry is a booming, dynamic and global industry that has grown rapidly in the last few decades. What was just US$3 billion in 1992 went on to an amazing US$100 billion approximately by 2003. The floral business functions by the mutual cooperation of the growers, whole sellers and the retailers. The present trend however is to reduce the gap between the growers and the retailers by removing the so called whole sellers so as to increase the availability of flowers at a cheaper price.
Packaging and Transportation of Flowers
Different flowers have different requirements and they are packed accordingly. Some flowers are directly packed into boxes and this helps to pack large amount of flowers in small space like an airplane hold. On the other hand, more exotic variety of flowers which cannot stay out of water for long periods are transported either in their individual water containers or put together in buckets of water. As this increases the transportation prices, the flowers too come at a pretty price. These flowers are then either taken to nurseries from where they are directly sent to consumers through mail order or taken to packing companies where they are graded, bunched and then put on sale. Though many flowers are grown in UK, a large part of the available flowers in the country are imported from other countries.
